Avoid Juvenile Needle Foliage and Stimulate Backbudding on Juniper Bonsai

Very clear and concise explanation thanks Jelle. I have always found junipers and pines a mystery and have killed several with poor handling. I am going to try again as the results that you show are very good and seem achievable with a little care.
Hi Andrew, keep in mind: Open substrate. Lots of sun, and -especially in summer- lots of water. I see many people killing juniper by underwatering for fear of rootrot whatever that might be.
Thanks for the video, Jelle. I'm new to bonsai and definitely new to junipers. Here in Panama, it's difficult to obtain many of the species that are "good" for bonsai. I recently acquired a Parsonii juniper. I've heard a lot of conflicting information about them as bonsai trees, so I'd like to know your opinion on the matter.

@@GrowingBonsai I do not believe it is a scale type. But it is so small, that analysis might change next summer, once it gets a full season of growth. Until then, I'm just leaving it in the sun.

Small suggestion.
When you say that one should definitely not pinch the tips you should also explain why that is not good. By pinching all the growth, you stop the tree from growing, so it stalls. As a result, you can easily lose a few months... you obviously know this, but novice bonsai lovers usually don't.
The goal in any intervention is to keep the growth in the tree

Good video, this idea of cutting the juvenile foliage is wrongly wide spread.
The emergence of juvenile foliage is the answer to an energy imbalance problem. The tree produces this type of foliage, because it is more cost-effective from an energy point of view, the needles maximize the photosynthetic surface, with low biomass and nitrogen investment by the plant. The tree wants to spend as little energy as possible to produce foliage that allows it to recover energy in the short term. It is often the possible response, in weakened/stressed plants or in plants where foliage has been drastically reduced (imposed and abrupt energy reduction).
the way is to prevent the stress response from being triggered, keeping the plants healthy, being judicious and keeping the percentage of foliage pruned in each season low.
If the tree has already triggered the juvenile response, the most correct thing to do is to NOT CUT the juvenile foliage, (don't stress the organism anymore), and let the tree recover the energy invested and be patient. Correct any health issues and remove small amounts of juvenile foliage in the coming seasons by letting the tree build up its energy levels, until the plant understands that it can go back to investing in mature, scale-like foliage.
The best way to deal with juvenile foliage is prevention.

I cringe whenever I hear of someone pinching junipers 😬. Junipers are definitely my favorite. Great video Jelle!
I have seen some great examples of pinched junipers though. But it is really maintenance for more developed specimens of looser foliage type species what I can tell that benefit. Need to study this a bit more :)
Oh thank God, just got a juniper, it's not my first, but saw the needles and thought I'd done something wrong, lack of water, or too much light, haven't feed it yet as we are in winter, but Australia is still a harsh environment so started to see one small branch of needles and kinda panicked. I now believe it's a good sign at I can now handle. But as a novice, any advice if obviously appreciated.
:D It ic a bit of a stressy situation, starting out and all that seems off is added concern. I do hope my videos help people understand that most bonsai mysteries are not that secret after all :)

Nice videos you should try the standard shimpaku if you can get ahold of it it's a darker bluer green
I have had them, and still have the odd other juniper species / varieties. I have however the aim to only grow ittoigawa. I like the fresh green look :)

Good tip! But I time most of my work on the tree, rather than the calender, which is why I go into what a plant should look like. But maybe I should include "during the growing season"

Hey Jai, Thank you for the nice compliment. I have been taking lots of workshops with well known masters. Next to that, I am in an international bonsai school from Nippon Bonsai association and the Dusseldorf bonsai school. And now that I have started giving workshops myself I am noticing I learn even more from teaching!
Thanks! The first bonsai I styled was a procumbens nana. It's my experiment and abuse tree 😆 I've got some media x blaauw J. chinesis that I've wired but not severely reduced yet. Really nice tight foliage too, but not such a nice colour
Yes, That is what I was thinking. Junipers are the first tree that people get -and kill- when starting bonsai!

Hi Brandon, going to have to be honest.. I do not know the species/variety and online I cannot see enough. Looks like a needle-type juniper that makes quite tight foliage by itself. I see no reason why it would not be suitable!

Hi Xavier, Did you check out the cuttings video? I have not found an ideal time. Normally in later winter, early spring I go through all cuttings of the previous year and pot the rooted ones up individualle. THe healthy, unrooted ones I pop back in a "shared pot" and leave them along for another year. I take cuttings when I prune my junipers, in any season. I have not observed a pattern where I have low succes in one season over an other.

I have a prickly type juniper that was given to me for Christmas last year. The soil is not right for it as I have learned from your wonderful videos. Should I repot now to help the tree, which is okay for now, or wait until fall? Also, I live in the hot desert. I can not leave the tree in the sun all day during the summer, do I only leave it in the sun during the morning hours then bring it to shade? What fertilizer do you recommend? Thank you!
In a hot and dry climate I would not repot in summer. Also, be carefull choosing substrate. In some climates you do need very water retensive substrate!
