    Ford has an impressive portfolio of vehicles currently on offer. The lightning is one of the most thought out entries in the segment. It’s amazing how they were able to take an existing platform and modify it to work as a bev and get similar results to a clean sheet design. It would be cool to see a raptor version of the lighting down the road. Something tells it me it’s already in the works.

      Actually the platform, the frame, suspension, power electronics, battery, and drive units make up an all new skateboard. The cab interior uses mostly the ICE version components, Bed and doors may be identical, but fenders and hood are different. Cab??? Essentially it _Looks_ like an adapted F-150, but the functional part of the vehicle is all new. This is obviously an intentional choice to aid in converting existing pickup drivers to try going EV.

    Just very impressed that Ford is not only going pretty hard into EVs, and did a pretty good job w/ the MachE,
    but that they REALLY nailed everything about the F150 Lightning- which they had to, for their marquee product, it HAD to please all their customers... but they also didn't just make an "acceptable" EV conversion of the F150, they hit it out of the ballpark in terms of both an EV and a supremely functional work truck with all the great useful AND unique features, including that MegaFrunk and ProPower V2G/H full integration w/ home charger. They kept all the ICE F150 cues and features to please existing customers, and leveraged (I believe) nearly the same ICE body & bed pretty much for easy mass production, but were able to do the unique EV features like mega frunk. Just extremely well done.
    Only miss: they didn't immediately gear up for HUGE production runs! Need to make tons of them!

    The F150 lightning gives me so many Nokia vibes. Like Nokia, Ford has tons of experience and has great execution. They also got the “first mover advantage”. However, like Nokia, they lack the software know how, the EV know how, and thus it’s clear it’s basically an old truck design into which they shoved in an EV power train, and that EV power train is using 10 year old tech (it has slow charging speed, equivalent to what was available in EVs 10 years ago). Like Apple, who completely rethought the smartphone, Tesla (and others) have the opportunity to rethink how EV trucks should be built - and clearly the CyberTruck is a significant departure from classic trucks - but out of necessity to improve aerodynamics, reduce weight, increase space for batteries and take advantage of EV structure for improved clearance.
    Many said iphone had no chance. All those Nokia and blackberry people were laughing at no keys. For the first 3-5 years many had doubts. Today, nothing except iPhone clones (I’m looking at you android) have any chance in the market. Granted, a few still use flip phones and some use blackberries, but it is negligible market share. Once CyberTrucks and other trucks that are clean slate EV design get some market traction it would be clear to everyone (including legacy automakers) that EV truck design is a better product - and is needed to make EV trucks a reality. Too back Ford/GM/etc did not realize it - they could have had a more significant advantage- but they were skeptical EV trucks would have any demand and no balls to make something different that actually takes advantage and optimizes for EV trucks. Kinda like the “Kodak moment” which invented the digital camera yet fell behind due to their addiction to film. Legacy will see a lot of market erosion due to them sticking with classic truck design and those who would not make the shift early enough, would suffer significant financial impact - maybe not in the next 3 years but very likely in 5-10 years. Going to be interesting to see if legacy makes the adjustment early enough

    Slippery front end? It has all the aerodynamics of a house brick. I get that Ford has tried to keep their traditional buyers given the F150 is their major cash cow but a little more attention to wind resistance could have made a good vehicle into a great one as well as increasing the range.
    It would have been a slight risk but there are still many who would never consider buying a brick with a lid so a little styling would have been a good thing. Definitely good value for money.

    The thing that stuns me continually is that they keep missing the opportunity to have DC points. I.e. a standardized tool connector that has adaptors for DeWalt, Milwaukee and more for whatever tools you have. All of a sudden you go from 80% or less efficiency to over 95% efficiency.
    Same in the back. Work with the tool manufacturers to provide DC air compressors etc. with a standardized plug.
    Then we can get rid of all of the insane chargers and all of the massive waste converting from DC to AC to DC again.

      There’s a large difference. Their controllers are fed DC.

      Ie these motors go from AC to DC at max 94% efficiency and most under 85% (if battery powered it charges the battery, if direct like a heat pump it just creates a 384vdc bus). Then DC to AC at about 94% efficiency.
      You get back 15% on average instantly by deleting the AC to DC conversion.

    Sounds like a perfect vehicle for a local contractor towing a trailer of equipment around a city. The truck charges all the batteries of the battery powered tools and recharges it self overnight at the shop. Expended tool batteries plug right into the truck. Even if the range is only 100 miles with all the extra drains, it means the daily route to sites means no more gas station visits or giant charging tables in the shop.

    • @darpompie4354
      @darpompie4354 Před rokem

      You are exactly right. All these so called truck experts say how bad EV's are at towing when the exact opposite is true. These things tow like a champ. What they are bad at is towing range, not towing. BUT.... Most contractors, don't travel over 100 miles a day and you start up with a full tank every morning. Then you have the lockable frunk where you can leave your plugged in tools and chargers so that everything is ready to go the next day.
      If you use your truck for a lot of long range towing, then for you, EV's are not ready yet. Check back in about 5 years and maybe? but for the rest of us, this truck will revolutionize your job site. Now all they have to do is get the price down because the current pricing is out to lunch.

If you notice Jordan's knees are up when he's sitting and you don't have much thigh support. This is the compromise. If you sit in the back of a truck without the flat floor (my 2014 Sierra is like this), your feet will be lower, more thigh support, but you have a tunnel bump and you lose the flat floor. If you tow or haul heavy or are rural or travel for moderate or far distances or go off road into the backwoos, buy a gasoline or diesel powderd truck. AND, the money you save on that purchase will buy a LOT of liquid fuel.

    Fighter pilot designers have found buttons and knobs are important over touchscreens.
    Hopefully this will come back in cars also.
    There are design aesthetics that work no matter how it is powered, as designers learn this you’ll have better designs that don’t try to be weird because it’s a new power plant. People will love the design no matter.

      Agreed. Everyone says things like "more crap to break", but in nearly 40 years the only "button" I've had break is a turn stalk, one time, after 400k miles it was worn out.
      Buttons with tactile feedback for any common item are a safety addition. No need to look at it, you can feel what needs to be changed to do it.

    I'm not a fan of the Cybertruck, but I do like the F150 and the Maverick. I reckon Tesla should have taken the X's frame and built a simple pickup like the Maverick on it. Call it a El camino copy if you like ;-)
    They would capitalise on the dev already spent on the X. The Maverick market is well established and from what I have read, it is still undeserved by other manufactures.

    • @DanielZajic

      Interesting thought, but Elon has said several times that the Model X is like a Faberge egg. The CT will be made at 10-50x the volume, support 2-3x the loads, use a structural pack, etc. We'll see if Elon learned his lesson. I bet he did.

    • @DaveTimperley
      @DaveTimperley Před rokem +1

      @@DanielZajic I see several probs with the cybertruck.
      It's too big. It's bigger then the F150 and that is why the Ford is a niche product most places outside the US. I think Tesla knows that because all international orders have been returned. I also think that is why it was delayed and spec'ed with all wheel steering. It probably had the turning circle of a super tanker.
      Basically everything is powered, so no power no nothing. I'm talking about the automatic door opening here .
      If you are anywhere but an urban area, and for any reason you lose power, your truck will become a semi permanent landscape fixture.
      They are probably going to fix the visibility issues with lots of cameras which means no power, no visibility..
      The thing I hate the most about the design is the sharp angles all over the place. Guaranteed that there are going to be injuries incurred.and the thing won't even be moving.
      The cyber truck is fundamentally urban
      Its design philosophy is to be cool. Not useful. Much like the new GM Hummer.
      This thing is this thing is the antithesis of the maverick which is small and useful

    Sue has a great eye for customer-facing features. Munro's business is analyzing and optimizing fabrication and assembly efficiencies, things that really matter to OEMs. Panel gaps, weld spacing, and efficient sealant application have little value to the people actually buying these vehicles. For the general audience Munro Live now attracts this channel needs *More Sue* !
    We are starting to see more analog (or analog-looking) controls included in EVs, especially at the higher end of the market. People like knobs and buttons. Using a touch screen for the PRNDL or to adjust ventilation louvers has lost its novelty and feels like a gimmick.
    I like Lucid's approach where most features have traditional tactile user inputs that can also be done on the screen. This makes the vehicle very approachable, without the steep learning curve of some EVs, but still gives highly detailed controls (seat bolster firmness, massage settings, hold/coast) through screen inputs.

Tesla Cybertruck will have them- how hard can it be to design it in when starting with a new platform?

    It is always interesting when Americans are talking about EVs. Especially for me since I have lived in the USA for 15 years, and now I have been in the EV capital of the world Norway. When it comes to trucks. Most trucks in the USA are personal vehicles, not working trucks. So going EV will for most users NOT be a problem. But maybe some think their manlyhood is in danger?? Most people can live with an EV. I have had no problem going on trips, driving in the snow, or going on road trips abroad.

    • @nycLPplayer
      @nycLPplayer Před rokem +3

      Maybe for some but for many they own trucks for versatility and then occasional "real truck stuff" not just a bag of potting soil from Home Depot. The issue is though the EV trucks can do these things well but the range isn't even close to being there yet. If you need to pull a boat to a lake within 50miles (100mile round trip) you are set. If you want tow your track car to a distant race track upstate you could run into some serious issues unless you can factor in recharge times. Best answer might be to own the EV but keep a 2nd cheap diesel tow hog if you have distance needs.

    • @ardenthebibliophile
      @ardenthebibliophile Před rokem +3

      It's definitely about image and in many cases "manliness". In more generic cases it's that people tend to overestimate the edge cases of work; how often they need a truck bed or large amounts of storage.
      Also, there truly are a lot of independent contractors that work out of a truck.

    • @ardenthebibliophile
      @ardenthebibliophile Před rokem +1

      @@nycLPplayer I agree EVs are not suited for towing yet. I also think that towing is more of an edge case; many many people do not tow at all. Even those with trucks, many do not tow.
      I think we see more overlap with prospective EV owners and those that tow right now because EVs are so expensive. You gotta have money to own one and those with money tend to also have toys to tow

      @@nycLPplayer uhhh maybe 30 yesrs ago but today MOST people buying trucks literally just want a big car that they can occassionally throw dirty stuff in the back. Hell, a ton of people just want the fashion of owning a truck and mod it so it can never haul anything. Every single soccer truck mom and truck lowrider or wacky stance truck owner and the vast majority of weekend warriors could go EV tomorrow and it would be an improvement for them. The number of people who ACTUALLY NEED to haul or tow with thier personal truck is miniscule compared to total truck sales. And I say actually need because there are a TON of truck owners who tow around a trailer simply because a truck is actually completely the wrong type of vehicle for them and they should own a van or even a minivan. The number of times Ive seen giant ass trucks towing huge trailers just to pick up an handful of 2x4s at Lowes is staggering. Stuff that even a small minivan would easily haul. Thats the REAL problem with truck ownership in the US, most people who own trucks or even SUVs shouldnt, because what they actually need is a minivan, but Americans decided that trucks R kool and minivans R lame. So here we are.

    The more I see the Lightning, the more I want one. If only they would get rid of that knob on the screen and wish the screen was horizontal. People can complain that it has a limited towing capacity with range but they forget this is still only and F-150 truck. If someone wants range with towing, then they'd get an F-250 or above.
    Ford did a great job with this EV truck and while yes, they will be able to reduce manufacturing costs for it, I doubt the price point will come down for consumers.
    Just looked up this truck and that bed liner coating is an option and not included with the truck. And so are those floor mats. Add up all the extras and this trim will easily reach $100,000. I'm so disappointed.
