One of my main complaints about Monroe live videos that don’t include Sandy are that the presenters often focus almost only on describing what we see without a lot of discussion about why the design is bad or good, or the trade offs of certain design choices.
I’m this video Carl was willing to go out on a limb and share his opinions on exactly those issues, and it was greatly appreciated. Makes for a great video.

@@MunroLive As a German engineer, I like this direct style. If someone made a bad decision, we can call it like that. The risk of engineers in the design process beeing to "polite" instead of fighting for the best solution, is that you end up with something like this Rivian seat. Important for all engineers to SAY and MEAN: "I (!) made a bad decision".
I do that by mysef loud and clear as a boss in front of my employees. Company culture of mistakes, learning and improving is very important to sustainable success for a company.

PERFECT! Comparing 1 vs the other, the articulation of what to say to laymen. Contrasting the WHY, a aspect can be good and what leads to bad. Average person doesn't need to know the outer thickness of material is 1.38mm with a .85mm backing on the inside and is a total of 8m of material.... what is discussed in this video shows great insight into what is relevant to the people watching and shows a plan and execution of the planning of this video. Carl rally did a great work in explaining, relevant aspects, and was clear concise and easy to follow. Really I care more about the vehicle efficiency, the durability of components, design execution in preventing future problems, etc., seats (for me) are just, hmmm that looks nice or hmm that feels nice, but after watching this video, I can say it was one of the best Munro videos is some time. To peak my interest in something I don't care much about, and leave me feeling better for watching the video..... Carl got a whole lot right, in this video. Fluff videos are a waste of time, videos without context are a waste of time, just saying "change it" without knowing what that means / involves is a waste of time, only stating person opinions is a waste of time... this video was non of that, and deserves a 10 out of 10.

Great review Carl. It is looking more and more like Rivian is just going to have to start from scratch with their next vehicle (after the R1S). That is not a terrible thing... that has pretty much been Tesla's approach. But Tesla has also been able to leverage mid-run changes to dramatically improve their vehicles as they go (especially on the 3 and Y). I am not sure Rivian can really do that. Maybe their next vehicle can be more flexible and they can do that, but it just seems like too much is amiss with the R1T/S to really ever make them profitably. Rivian is really cool, I want them to do well, but they really do seem to have a long way to come.

Being an engineer most of my career, it's the calendar that's the driving force for most decision making for a complex product. My guess is that Rivian spent a great amount of time/review cycles upfront coming up with the Rivian branding for the seat. Because of delays upfront, the rest of the process was rushed. The attitude was just get it done and we will fix it in the next production cycle. Unfortunately as Carl told us to change the design of the seat, tooling has to be scrapped to make the seat with a smaller part count. That expense can not be recovered. Thanks Carl for explaining the various trade-offs.
