@@YKSGuy It is a must for the Ford. Without the low entry point the front would be useless and far to high off the ground to reach into. The truck to too oversized. • @dannyDrives_Renewable_Electric

A smart man once said "You don't create the new system by obsessing on the current system." Rivian should blow the Ford away because it was "blank sheet" designed to be electric, while Ford did little more than they did with the Focus Electric compliance car - take the gas motor out of a "real" truck and stick in an electric one. Unfortunately, the first thing Rivian did with their blank sheet was draw a picture of a gas truck on it! I wish some company would design an electric truck letting the form follow function - it probably wouldn't look like any other truck ever. Great comparison, guys!

  • @christophersiano969

I'd like to see something like "This Truck Guy" head-to-head. The suburban guy who commutes, shuttles the kids to sports, needs to pack for family camping, and the Home Depot run. The sportsman who wants to carry the gear and access places for camping, fishing, and hunting. The Handyman who needs to haul material, do chores around the house and the vacation property. Etc. How do these trucks meet the needs of people who need trucks?
Couple other things I've not seen. Those unique headlights on the Rivian - how well do they actually work? How well do the lights work in the fog? I'm especially curious as you can't turn off the headlights and run just fog lights on the Rivian like just about every other vehicle. I do that often when the fog is really thick as the headlights are just too dazzling. The bed with the under storage - how robust is it? If you had a load of wood chips or pea stone would it suck to get clean?
How does the Lightning stack up in those?
While I like the Ford's front truck for access, how well does it work when it comes to holding stuff? With the Rivian, I can load up tents, chairs, roll tables, bags of clothes, and pack and pack and pack until the lid won't come down. How easy is it to do that in the Ford? Any chance of whacking your head on the bottom of the Ford's grill? I actually did that once on my '96 Ram when I was doing some engine work.
Gear tunnel is an odd shape. When packing, how easy is it to use that space? What kind of cooler fits that you can access from the rear seats? You need room for the lid to open. Soft coolers would be a pain as the access isn't such to operate a zipper.
You guys are in MA. How do you travel to like Cape Cod or the White Mountains? There are no fast chargers in either place that I can see. Unless you overnight with a level 2 available, how do you do it? For example, if you wanted to go to Pittsburg, NH from Worcester, MA to go snowmobiling, the only option seems to be a stop at St Johnsbury, VT for over 2 hours. And that doesn't even include towing the sleds on a trailer. The only Fast Charger north of Manchester is in Lebanon which isn't exactly along the way to anything but Vermont. On the Cape, there is a charger in Barnstable which is rather out of the way if you are spending a week out in P-town or down in the Falmouth area?

I would like to see a winter series when you get snow. Supposedly, Rivian has an advantage in traction. Does it really make any difference or is it just a tire test. Keep up the great job!

Great job, guys! But, you missed a very BIG feature that Jim Farley highlighted in F150. Lightning, with its 240 volt outlet, can charge a stranded Tesla (or Rivian). It isn’t practical for a Rivian to charge any other EV at only 120 volts.

Good head to head. Load, shocks, leveling would have been good additions.

If loading up the back with camping gear, you take the spare tyre out and put it back on top of your gear..
Fill the tyre spot with camping supplies.. :)

Price, range, charging speed and battery chemistry comparisons are important. As far as I'm concerned Ford has nailed it. I am a functional person. Vehicle to home in a black out, on site power, being able to charge another EV. Functionality is king for me.

Be good to know how long those outlets will provide power for both individually and as group at the same time. Would not be good to drain power and wait age's for recharge.

Ford wins easily as a usable pickup. Full size pickups are much more comfortable/relaxing on trips as well in my opinion- like comparing a Tacoma with a Tundra. I feel confined in the Tacoma. Our Tundra great for family trips- dumbs.. Toyota really dropped the ball as we transition . Ford did well, as a former early Rivian reservation cancel, who is now waiting for a CT. If I knew the CT would take much longer I would definitely order the lightning. 240v outlet is huge, as well as full size bed. I race motocross and am expecting an electric Stark Varg in December, plugging in 240v for charge at the track awesome as the moto community transitions as well.

So- having 240v is great, but how much can you use and still have enough battery to make it home? What's the towing capacity? What's the range? Critical issues not covered.

Off-road clearance would be fun to see. It looks like the Ford's plastic bumper limits quite a bit, so I'm curious if aftermarket solutions would allow it to hang with the Rivian.

There's no question round two goes to the lightning for several reasons. Most important how easy it is to put things into the trunk. Second the Rivian doesn't have any 120 volt outlets in the truck just a 12 volt outlet. where the lightning has 4 120 volt recepticals and USB a & c.

I've kind of grown out of my Truck phase. The first thing I do is put a camper or cover on the back to protect what I'm hauling.. and the Model Y did that for me. The only thing interesting now is the battery to grid.. or simply the ability to run things in the house from the battery pack during a power outage. I have a Cybertruck RWD on order, but that could be cancelled simply because they don't want to make it.. I may be okay with that. Autonomous delivery trucks in the future may make the need for a Full size truck go away.. and just be a pain to park and take up space.. and a pain to keep charged.

You do know you can upgrade the Cybertruck to two motors right? That's what I did. It's not a bad idea to go ~50 miles further and convert it to an all-wheel drive for $10k extra.

How about you take both of these into Boston and find a parking spot. That could be hilarious. Or do the classic attempt to drive around and park your car in harvard yard.

I would like to see an A to B timed challenge that includes recharging (maybe 1000 km). Also, I would like to see an off-road challenge, here I think the Rivian is aimed at, Ford seems more an on-road truck, but need the challenge to confirm.
