I didn’t have too many problems with Happy Gilmore, but there were times where I wasn’t too proud of Adam Sandler’s character, and also how I shared the same feelings with Ebert, for how he was truly sickened by how Subway sandwich shops (that movie felt like it was sponsored by that restaurant) kept appearing in various parts of the film. Despite all of that, it’s still a joyous achievement for Bob Barker to get a lot of praise and recognition, by his TPIR fans, just because of that one scene with Sandler, and his few famous lines, in it.
You aren’t kidding about the Subway placements. As a kid and teen whenever I would watch it, I’d get strong cravings for Subway. Which in the 90’s wasn’t a bad sandwich and you def got moneys worth but that’s besides the point I know.
Props to Gene for predicting Sandler's actual acting potential. Obviously, I can see them not having fun with such a dumb/funny movie, but Roger didn't get the Subway placement was so blatant it wraps back around to being funny.
I love "The Late Shift". I've watched it MANY times, most recently was last week. It's one of those movies that's always on HBO because they created it, just like "And the Band Played On", which I've also watched many times as well.
i only seen it once way back then and i recall i liked it well enough but i dont really remember it now. the only thing i do really remember is that there is a scene where Lettermen is in his backyard throwing baseballs at an archery target, and apparently for some reason it REALLY irritated the real Letterman and for a VERY long time afterwards he would make comments about it on his show.
I am in-between Roger and Gene on The Late Shift. On one hand, the drama of snatching Carson's spot was intriguing. Yet on the other hand, you don't really learn how Leno and Jay tick. My guess is, the fear of possible libel suits from either man kept this film from penetrating it's subjects.
I knew they weren't going to like Happy Gilmore but I laughed just as hard as when I first saw it when Happy just turns and blasts Bob in the face. Bob winning the fight defies expectations which is the basis of all comedy. Happy Gilmore is a classic. 10:29 I really liked Rogers defense of Chris Farley
I would have been interested to hear what both of these guys thought of Uncut Gems. Gene saw potential in Sandler and I think that film would have intrigued him.

With The Late Shift, I kept being distracted by the makeup required to give the actor Jay Leno's chin. Please, the movie Man of a Thousand Faces was more believable and they didn't even TRY to make the makeups look like how Lon Chaney did them!! Beyond that, I suppose it's okay, but I already know they took liberties, mostly because Jay's former agent Helen Kushnick tried to sue their a___ses off for misrepresenting her. I have never liked Adam Sandler's movies - they're all kinda stupid, IMO. Happy Gilmore's only real claim to fame and interest is Bob Barker knocking Happy's block off. Although nowadays, we might even prefer the reverse....
I have never understood the reverence that people have for caddy shack. Hideously overrated movie. Happy Gilmore is funnier in every single way and it’s not even a debate.

Never saw caddyshack, and this is very jaded since I haven’t seen it, but the clips I’ve seen made me feel like it’s a “classic” movie I probably wouldn’t get into. Wonder how thick the nostalgia glasses are for some with that movie. I grew up with Happy Gilmore, and honestly like it less and less everytime I watch, but the nostalgia is strong for me so I still get a smile from it here and there.
Braveheart sucked. I walked out of the theatre. It was predictable Hollywood farce with music that dictated how you were supposed to feel (and I didn't know the history at the time).
Gene's mention of The Larry Sander's Show is nice. Watch it if you haven't. Best tv comedy made to date even after 30 years.

Ebert lived long enough to see Punch-Drunk Love, which was the first time Adam Sandler did a "real movie". Gave it 4.5/5 stars.
