  • This series is hard SF with incredible world building, an imaginative and believable future, and a compelling, uncontrived take on human conflict with both alien species and time itself.
    I could not put it down once I started, and I've recommended it to dozens of people.
    Definitely pick up The Three Body Problem by Cixin Liu if you haven’t already.

    • @squishy1706
      @squishy1706 Před 4 měsíci

      @roproart6529 it's been a while since I read it. The main character (and only real female protagonist) of the third book basically just stands around while all the male characters do everything and practically wait for her to catch up... it is a little hit or miss when it comes with 'passive Asian characters' a good chunk of characters are naturally Chinese or Asian so you do get the 'passive Asian ' characters, and one that basically rejects his job and sits around all day until he literally meets a women of his dreams, who is defined by "she was pretty" and does basically fuck all...
      That being said many Asian characters are not passive, some go kick LOTS of ass, and from memory one guy tries to fuck a blackhole? That bit was fucking weird...
      I would say there are some good characters but they are few and far between next to the cardboard crusaders. A villain from the first book is AMAZING tho.

    If you ever get a chance, look for "Chronicles of the Lensmen" by E. E. "Doc" Smith, it is hard Sci-fi/Fantasy with a storyline that I loved, and want everyone who likes science fiction to read.

    When the Dark Forest theory was explained in the second book, i hid under my bed.
    When they started to use cosmological
    constants as weapons in the third book, i lost my mind.

    Sophon having her katana and vaguely japanese getup is kinda weird, she only picks the look due to long term interaction with humans (since encountering humanity had HUGE social upheavals among the san-ti)
    So...why does she look like that put the gate?

    Meh, I started on that but lost interest. Was a while ago though so I don't really remember the plot. Let me think... There was a portrayal of the paranoia of the cultural revolution, the protagonist sent off to a labour camp before being forced into a military project years later.
    Some books do have bad starts and work out well though. Maybe I should give it another go. Maybe. But then I've tried Dune about 14 times and never got into it either.

      @maxsilva11 Před 5 měsíci

      Worth noting: you're describing the introductory section of the English translation, which is actually told as a flashback in the original Chinese edition. So, if you're struggling with that flashback stuff, maybe try starting from the present day plotline and then going back once you have context for where the story is going.

    Solaris is a really good sci-fi/philosophical story and despite the fact it has two chapters that go deep into hard pseudo scientific theories about the planet in question but its enkoyable other than that, also The Three Body Problem is unique but its not terribly interesting
