    Born & raised in Pittsburgh in the 80’s and 90’s. Lived in NYC the past 25 years. Anyone who experience Pittsburgh during the 80’s and 90’s after the steel mills left and after Westinghouse left will tell you how depressed and violent that city became. The fact that it’s so segregated in terms of resources makes in worse. They literally destroyed the Black epicenters of The Hill, Homewood, Wilkinsburg, East Liberty, North Side, McKeesport, and others during the 70’s and Pittsburgh’s Black community has not been able to recover. It’s not the community’s fault when the city usurps these resources to serve the white communities. The result of this is what lead to this report. I’ve heard it’s gotten better but still not good. Yes racism is everywhere but it’s systematic in Pittsburgh. The whites there are struggling so it’s 10x worse for Blacks. Racism is amplified when whites are poor too.

    I'm not black but I grew up in the NYC area and then moved to Pittsburgh as an adult (it's a long story). One thing I noticed very quickly is that there is no real middle class black community in Pittsburgh. In NY it's common to meet educated and successful black folks living in diverse and prosperous neighborhoods or suburbs, whereas in Pittsburgh the black community is largely segregated from opportunity and confined to poor inner city areas with bad schools. It's a damn shame, the terrible and underfunded Pittsburgh Public School system means the kids have little chance at a future even if they're smart and work hard. The city needs to work on providing quality education to give people a way to lift themselves up

    • @danawashington8754
      @danawashington8754 Před 4 lety +1

      @@BLACTACULAR you are completely correct in this case. The issue of the current DA is such that it would have been a moot point if we had gotten out to participate in the local government election that kept him in office. We MUST learn to fully recognize our own ability to affect change. The fact is that national change begins at the local level. We traditionally don't come out to vote in the midterm elections but will be here in the next presidential election. Mistakenly, we think that electing a president is how we get things done. Local magistrates decide cases concerning issues that involve evictions, child support arrests, truancy charges, etc. But if you ask the average Black person in the Burgh who they voted for to be their magistrate; they will probably say that they just voted the straight ticket. As a poll worker who has done this voluntarily off and on since the tender age of 18, I obviously don't know how people voted but know what questions they asked me about how to vote straight ticket...the problem with that issue is the candidate you may want to elect will not get your vote if not endorsed by the party of your choice-you have to take the time to actually choose the candidate. The state recently approved the purchase of new voting machines for the entire state and Allegheny County chose a vendor against the advice of qualified voting experts. County officials have said they were not aware of the contradiction of the recommendations of the experts to choose the machine that would leave a paper trail instead of the one they ultimately purchased. I have yet to go through the training for the new machine but am anxious to see it in action. I say all that really to just say that things are not going to get better until they learn how to affect change and the power they have. The power is in our dollar and our vote. We must begin to purposefully use both by using strategies to ensure that our presence is known by the powers to be...this must be done by unity and solidarity. Everyone knows that a house divided against itself cannot stand; in other words ; united we stand and divided we fall...we are in a fallen state of affairs in the good old Burgh. I have to stop this posting on the issue and get back in touch with the community organizations that empower people to do what is going to get it turned around and never stop fighting for not just a "seat at the table " but a new table for the first time since the 70s.

    As far as Pittsburgh goes, Neely Fuller said "keep those people moving". My great grandparents ran from the south to settle up north in Pittsburgh. Most black folks who came to pgh settled in the hill district, while others settled on the northside. Redlining ensured that black folks remained relegated to those areas. Now, after all these years, their great grandchildren are moving back down south only to start all over again.

While I'm not in poverty, majority of the black community here is. I do believe Gentrification has a lot to do that. Let's not compare other cities like Johnstown to Pittsburgh because with the amount of resources we have here, a greater number of our black community should be thriving. Education and career advancement is definitely not offered to us as a whole on the same scale.

    I was born and raised in Pittsburgh, had children, lived in the projects, went to school and received an associate's degree and got a job. Did well and always had to train a white person for the advancement position I could not qualify to get. Eventually, I moved to Atlanta over 20 years ago and seeing the difference, I have been saying for years, that if you want to succeed, you have to move from Pittsburgh. While in Atlanta, I completed my batcher's degree and for a short while moved back to Pittsburgh. When I returned, I found that the situation had worsened because all of the neighborhoods that were once traditional black communities, had been gentrified and now not even I could afford to live there because the rent in those places was $1,500 to $2,200. Most black families, let alone a single person makes enough to afford to live there. Then, the social life was stripped away as the only decent club was shut down. There are several of dive bars, but they also do things there that most people don't want to be around. I moved back to Atlanta as soon as I could because it was clear that things had gotten worse for blacks in Pittsburgh. Not only is it the worse because of jobs and housing, it is also an extremely racist city. I'm from Pittsburgh and have always hated the unfairness and treatment of the black community. One final thing to note, on St Patrick's Day, several downtown streets are closed so that the white community can drink in the streets and get pissy drunk. That would NEVER happen for a beloved black holiday.

      So white people looking out for their own group of people and helping their group of people succeed over others is racist, but if black people do that it's not. That sounds hypocritical to me. I bet if you saw the same thing that happened to you in Pittsburgh, happening to white people in Atlanta you wouldn't be complaining. What you really want to see is the white community be destroyed for your own benefit right?

At one time it was a Black Mecca. We had Black owned businesses, Corner stores, Barbershops, Restaurants Supermarkets and Movie theaters. The Irish, Jews, Italians, Polish and of course the UNIVERSITY OF PITTSBURGH gentrified the whole area. Pittsburgh is the Mississippi of the North and the City Government is proud and active when looking down on Blacks. From what I can see, and tell, Blacks in Pittsburgh still have very little political power, and very little economic power. BUT, it is not just Pittsburgh, but I argue, all of SW Pa. I grew up in Atlanta, and was stunned when I moved to Pa., for undergrad, at the plight of Blacks in Pa.

Came back to Pittsburgh in 2009. Left for Harrisburg, PA about 6 months ago because I wanted a better environment for my boys. Central PA is so much better. True Harrisburg's Black community is kinda isolated within a see of Amish and PA Dutch. But that's ok. People of color have more of a sense of community here and there does not seem to be nearly as much antagonism between the police here and people of color. So glad I left!

      I absolutely agree with you. I'm originally from Upstate Rochester NY. I moved to Pittsburgh because of family and noticed that it looked too old fashion to me, the food wasn't good, the schools aren't great, and you can't get anywhere in life being in Pittsburgh. I'm into fashion designer, acting, and dancing so I knew Pittsburgh definitely wasn't the place for me. So I moved to Weirton WV, while still going to college in Pittsburgh. Then later moved to Harrisburg PA received my Associates in Sciene. Then went to Hacc for Dental schooling. I would definitely say Harrisburg is very diverse and the people are friendly. The only cities in PA that are diverse is Philly, Harrisburg, and Lancaster honestly. Harrisburg may be small but it reminds me of how it was with me living in NY. Plus the food is good out here. I like how you brought up the Amish people because I see them all the time at the Broad Street Market. I also, work in the Jewish Community, so I always see Jewish people. But whenever I'm out & about I love seeing different people from different backgrounds. I done seen Hispanic, Jamaican, Amish, Jewish, African, Indian and etc. It makes me truly happy, especially since I didn't see much diversity in Pittsburgh.

      Malanie Jones You don’t see much diversity in Pittsburgh? I’m sorry you feel that way, but I have to respectably disagree. No shade, but I would recommend a history book on immigration to Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh is incredibly diverse, in different ethnicities like Polish, Irish, Italian, Jewish, Ukrainian, Greek and other different cultures from different countries and religions. All these different cultures greatly influenced the city, food, and culture of Pittsburgh. They, white people of different ethnicities living there, may look alike, and aren’t often first generation immigrants now but there’s definitely a huge amount of diversity and various cultures you can see. Plus, I’m sure there is immigration today from places like the Caribbean or India. Last year, there was a bunch of tourists from those places, I saw.

      I think it’s a nice place to live, and I say this with the view of someone who has lived somewhere else. Everyone’s gonna have their preferences on what’s an ideal place to live for them, but there’s a certain level of pride of being from or just loving Pittsburgh.
      If you’re a history fan, lots of really cool history. Not all good, not all bad, but all very interesting, and long. So many diverse cultures influenced the city.
      Weather wise - it snows. It’s the North so I’m always like 🙄 what did you expect??? When people are surprised. But that’s definitely a reason people move away.
      Big fans of sports. BIG FANS lol. Football, baseball, hockey. You might not care about it, but you have to support yinz teams
      Lots of good places to eat. Eatin’ Park, Primanti Brothers, etc.
      There’s a lot of nature around you, in the city and around the area. Erie. Lots of museums and parks. Also, Kennywood. While, Schools kind of suck, in the city. I’m pretty sure roads are an issue, but it does have one of the best public transportation systems. Now, is race gonna be an issue? There may be some bad apples but overall I have to say it’s not that bad. I don’t think you’ll have any issues with finding a job cause of race. Ex: There was a gay couple that moved in and no one cared. If you’re hipster and hate Pittsburgh as it is, people may say something about gentrification. Which, sadly, is something that has happened. I only know with certainty it happened in one community - the Polish in South Side.
      My advice, just be respectful. On the heritage and history. Go in with an open mind if you do move there. I think it’s a good city without the woke craziness of places like LA, but I would like different policies and politicians.
      Lastly, go and look out on the city of bridges. It’s really beautiful.
      Has it’s problems, but it has its beauty too.

    I am also from Pittsburgh! I Left here 4 times and the only reason I keep coming back, is because my 2 older daughter’s keep coming back here! I plan on leaving very soon, my youngest daughter and I, are out of here... It is depressing, people are very miserable and there are not a lot of black owned businesses here. People from other countries, come here for schooling”Colleges “, but that is about all Pittsburgh has to offer... The only programs we have for the kids, is after school, boys and girls clubs, the restaurants here are not welcoming at all, housing is far outside of the city, this time, there is no coming back for me, I cannot bring my daughter up in this hell hole

    My plan is to move out of this city because I tire of this wacky ass weather and it will be nice to see other landscapes and yes, you will have to deal with racist people no matter where you go on this Earth but I don't think Pittsburgh is the worst place. It's just a place, a location.

    • @falasha1825
      @falasha1825 Před 4 lety +3

      Pittsburgh is absolutely on a whole different level;otherwise, a comparison wouldn't be doable. I'm a native of Pittsburgh, and can say this; if it were not for my mom being ill, I'd run for the hills so far I wouldn't care where the end result was, as long as it's not Pittsburgh! Great example, at one of Pittsburgh's larger employers, Usps located on its North side, eight Africa-American women employees in good standing, at least half being degreed up, put in for supervisor positions. None were given the courtesy of a reply, which is a reply in and of itself. All white males, as in ALL, landed those supervisory positions and most of them didn't have any post-secondary education. One of those black women had broken an historic USPS automation record. So, it had nothing to do with performance(for her it really WAS about her performance if you know what I mean).This, my friend, is a typical day in the life of a black person living in Pittsburgh, and though other cities have their problems, Pittsburgh just keeps screaming Go Steelers! and acts like,." We tolerate the blacks. What's the problem?" My soul and spirit ache to get out of Hell's slippery slope called Pittsburgh.

    This city is horrible. My friend moved here from Texas and he absolutely hates it. It is very segregated still in 2022. The housing is very old and rent is skyhigh. The roads are horrible, jobs are scarce, people are rude and clickish, jealous and hateful. Life here has been hard and it's shows, whites here are racist. The city does nothing for POC. It functions around white people. All the activities and festivals are for whites. The black communities are surrounded by rich white communities whose homes have been past down from generation to generation. You can literally go from a rich white community and turn the corner and boom ur in a low income community that's underdeveloped and full of blacks who are struggling. The people here are stuck in their ways and not very open minded. If you're black you will be working with alot of whites in management who are most likely racist. It's hard to live in a city where people's spirits are broken and there's very little hope. It can be very depressing. It is a good place to go to school but afterwards I would highly suggest moving to a bigger city with more opportunities. I was born here raised down south and moved back to take care of family. I am planning to relocate cuz THIS AIN'T IT. PERIOD

      Whatever city you find a blessing to look up to YHWH Holy God through Jesus Christ. Everyone needs an angel for protection, just stay away from the garbage so your angel doesnt bail out on you asking for a new assignment. By wisdom you can buy land or a house down south and fix it up with money you earned up north. Smart people buy a house down south to retire to but the southern wages, no thanks. If you have to endure racism at least get something out of it, savings. The standard of living has been falling for the past 15 years for everybody, our skills need to be better, longer hours, not buying new stuff. Dont seek after money or free programs, seek after wisdom. Stop giving money to the church and help the poor, it just might be you. Southern colleges are like candy stores for blacks. Northern colleges are warped out from Asians beating out the whites. No one is flicking their bic to light your candle up north. Down south they offer classes in it. Imo. Lets say would you work twice as hard for twice the pay? Up north. Or work twice the hours but slower for half the pay down south, with 2 people waiting to take your place.
