People from Pittsburgh are notoriously friendly. I've been there a few times and It's really refreshing coming from eastern PA where everyone is cold and rude. Pittsburghers are very personable and easy to become friends with.

Always wanted to visit Pittsburgh. Yes I agree, the people in NEPA suck and are rude hahaha.
Some are friendly, but some are just like everywhere else. Some have an attitude of me and mine and the stillers and blank everyone else.
I’ve been to both Philly and Pittsburgh and as a Baltimore Ravens fan I’ll take Pittsburgh over any day….
Friendly? Compared to who? I spent a week there, and MAYBE 5 people said hello. NOBODY wished us "Happy Holidays," "Merry Christmas," or "Happy New Year." Not one person. They all walk around with angry looks, and there is a bad road rage problem. 😒
2012 moved from calif to pittsburgh, my house was $27,000, yes 27,000, love the hills, woods, creek, wildlife, i live near the OHIO RIVER, kayaking, hiking, camping, fishing, jet ski, boating etc.. Winter is not that bad, ppl are nice, 5pm rush hour traffic is not that bad
What part of Cali. I live in northern LA county, just moved to Ventura, but I would like to leave in the future due to cost of living.

I have visited Pittsburgh many times and intend to retire there some day in the future. The people of Pittsburgh are some of the sweetest people I have ever met. Helpful as well.

My whole family has grown up in Pittsburgh, but during my life we’ve had to move to a small town in pa and I hate it, Pittsburgh has the best schools in PA and has so many memories and has beautiful places and amazing people.

I’m in the Tuscany apartments in Mt. Lebanon, close to downtown but not in town .under $950 a month includes all utilities accept power but the heat is gas so it’s included . Garage parking . Awesome neighborhood

I loved the summers; green pouring out of every crevice, lazy humid days that are somehow peaceful. Winters are gray and long enough that to forget what summer is like. I searched for stepping stones to make it through but, oh, was May glorious when it arrived!

Pittsburgh is, in many ways an internal city. If you're an internal person (artistic, scientific, analytical, reflective) the gray skys won't bother you. They, actually, facilitate internalization. If you're an external person, i.e. if sunshine is important to you, you may not feel comfortable there. Pittsburgh will, definitely, get your brain working.

I'm originally from Seattle and the gray skies never bothered me.
But at some point we have lived in the top most part of New Mexico and Southeast Idaho and now North Carolina.... And they have to say even visiting Seattle seems so gloomy and I didn't realize how much I loved the sun until I was in States that had sun.
I love love love a good cloudy day. I just can't imagine having as many as people keep saying there are. It looks like it's comparable to Seattle except it's been said there is more and that's one thing I'm a little afraid of.
One of the things to remember about our infrastructure is that initially the water-edges were owned by the coal/steel/rail industry, so roads weren't as robust (people had to walk/take inclines) to work...then when cars came about, the roads and parking were atrocious so, in the 70's they made a huge push to getting cars off the roads with the trolleys, then Port Authority had to take it over. There were actually plans to "straighten out" some of the infrastructure (Wabash Bridge), but they failed due to not aligning with the city skyline plans.
It's a catch-22, you have to destroy some of the historical parts in order to resolve some of the infrastructure parts, and being a city that values it's history (Heinz History Museum being proof of this), we choose to be inconvenienced, vs. destroy what makes us special...just look at the Mon Warf parking area.

Lots of good food and restaurants here. I will say, if you're looking for a safe area where you have everything you need around you, Aspinwall is a great place to be, Plus, you don't have the higher wage tax.

Everybody complains about their weather! I've only moved here about 1.3 years ago and experienced a very mild winter (from what everyone was saying) and I find the whole year a bit better than where left (MI). Perhaps with general warming, this will continue.
I find several huge PROS are the general friendliness relative to East Coast or major competitive cities in the Midwest, all the innovative breweries, restaurants and food/beer festivals to meet people, and then the walkability factor is quite high because the city is small-ish. Street parking is very easy everywhere but downtown. There are surprising museums like the Warhol, the Bike Museum (I just visited today!), the Children's, the Heinz History, the Carnegie and other small, grassroots galleries. It's also a very progressive city (a CON for some) accepting everyone as-they-are. I can even dress down for the symphony and no one bats an eye or tsks-tsks me out. It's a very photogenic, historic, colorful city from downtown to every hilltop.
Some of the CONS I'd add are the air quality (because some smog and construction dust tends to get stuck in the valleys), the hills can be tough to walk (as well as a regular challenge), and restaurants tend to stop serving by about 8:30pm; bars by 10p or 11. The upside of that last is drivers aren't as drunk and maybe people aren't as overweight. In fact, another PRO is there are so many young people here and they work out religiously outdoors running, walking, cycling, kayaking, etc. I am so inspired to get on the bike a lot because of them! Oh, and then the food trucks and many restaurants are so innovative!
It's a colorful, exciting, vibrant, tech-savvy city near enough to DC, Philly and NYC. It's a great place for stay-cations! And it's affordable!
Agree and I say it all the time, winters here are nothing like they used to be. When people hear Pittsburgh and think of bad winners, they must’ve been around for quite some time to actually experienced really bad winters in the 70s and 80s like myself.

Healthcare may be good. But the health insurance options are not. Two health insurance companies own all the hospitals. So that means you sometimes have to drive farther away to get to a hospital owned by your insurance company even though there may be a hospital waiting to help you right down the road that you can't use.
I live about an hour and a half away from Pittsburgh (Morgantown, WV). I'm an actor and there are no acting opportunities in WV so I make the commute about once or twice a week for work. I'm gonna go ahead and make the move this summer but you should make a video talking about acting in pittsburgh. The acting agencies, shows & productions that have been shot there, benefits of acting in a smaller market like PGH instead of a large market like LA, etc...
Pittsburgh is a good midsized city. City looks more like Providence than a former industrial town. Another thing I can say is that their inner city didn't become plagued by high crime and poverty unlike their rust belt brethren (Cleveland, Buffalo, and Detroit).

Pittsburgh looks more like Providence??? Are you talking about Providence RI? are you OK? Pittsburgh is smack dab in rust belt central. It looks exactly like an old rust belt town. Decay, dirty, gray, dreary. As the other person said take a ride through the Mon Valley - it’s post apocalyptic no exaggeration. Urban and suburban blight, towns are trying to scrape together funds to demolish all the abandoned and decaying buildings and homes. To people that have lived in the Pittsburgh area all their lives, it’s all fine and dandy. I was one of them but I luckily moved away 20 years ago and now when I go back to visit I can see it through another lens. Young people in general should steer clear of moving there.
@@fuqoff8583 I disagree. The downtown gave me Providence vibes. The neighborhoods surrounding downtown are being revived. The city overall has a per capita income of $42,000, median household income of $63,000, and poverty rate of 19%. Plus, everything downstream from Homestead is suburbs. I was giving my take on Pittsburgh as a city, not the region overall.
Your video is great, high quality. My personal opinion about Pittsburgh- mixed feelings. My biggest surprise- a lot of religion (at least in suburbs). Church is important part of life. Nomads/transplants watching this- live in the city if you can. Suburban population tends to hang out with their own friends/family. Making a connection with the locals takes effort (read- cliques). Locals tend to stay after college or leave and come back because of family/friends. Find other transplants. Activities- do your research, it is out there, and videos like these help.
I'm right on board with you! The city is old and is always going to be old. The inner city is obviously where it's at. The suburbs are 99.9% family-friendly or oriented.

I am thinking of heading out to the Midwest or Pittsburgh, PA soon. I am not sure if you define yourself as a Midwestern City or not. I just got out of living in Jacksonville, FL for two years and I hated it. How easy is it to get around Pittsburgh, PA by Public Transportation? I may be without a Vehicle for a little bit.

If you check around my CZcams channel you'll see I do videos that talk about public transportation but that's only within Allegheny County. Primarily the city limits.
My wife and I grew up in Pittsburgh. That's why we chose to build and live in an adjacent county where taxes are considerably lower and neighboring houses are more than a few feet away. Several years ago I took my children for a look at the house where I grew up. Comments. "That was your yard?" "Where did you play?" "Where did grandpa have his garden."
I'd say if you like dynamic weather Pittsburgh's pretty good. Most rainy days in the spring and summer are only rainy for part of the day. Late fall does get pretty gray, but winter's been pretty snowy recently (commonly very gray with frequent temperature fluctuations). There are a lot of days with a very enjoyable mix of weather. I'd say the most common weather for the good parts of the year is partly cloudy, mostly cumulus clouds with plenty of sun so quite nice. Early Fall can get pretty dry also and has great colors. Spring is super vibrant but fairly rainy.
I’ll give Pittsburgh credit for one thing from what I’ve looked up I’m from NJ though, they don’t get as much snow as I thought not even close! 27 inches a year on average which is barely more then north Jersey and they get less rain then us. Their downfall is 160 sunny days a year, and definitely the bridges and tunnels that area should not be that bad with traffic….
Hi! I believe you mention relocating to be near cycling events in the city. It would be phenomenal if you did a video on neighborhoods that give you access to cycling routes. While likely a large undertaking...I think that would grab a lot of interest. So difficult to get a sense of that with Pittsburgh's varying geography. Thank you. Happy Holidays.
There are definitely different biking activities of course you know what slowed that down. Have to circle back around when the weather gets nice and see what the Burgh has.
Anywhere within a mile to one of the rivers is great to get on the trails. Once on the trail, it's pretty easy to connect from one to the next.
Grew up in PA until I was 8. Moved to LA. Laughed out loud when i saw the wood paneling. but i want to move back.

Have visited nearly a dozen times and adore just about everything about the city. The cons you list here don't scare me. But I'm concerned about air quality. Any thoughts on whether the region's air quality will continue to (very) gradually improve?
Thoughts…less factories, no more pollution than any other city.
The air quality, except where the steel mills are still open. Clairton and Braddock come to mind.
My husband has been approached from a job there and this is probably the 12th video I've seen.
An air pollution and the lack of sunlight are what scares me. Air pollution has been mentioned as worst in the US on every single video and you can look it up and find it. So while your comment comforts me a tiny bit I wonder how it can constantly be called the worst if it's not actually the worst. Respectfully of course I'm just thinking out loud...
My husband's annoyed because he really wants to take this job and I love so much about what's mentioned It's just the pollution, the lack of sun, the taxes and some of the infrastructure issue that is mentioned over and over that bothers me.
The one thing that would get me to overlook any of it is the friendliness of the people. I crave it but the pollution is what scares me more than anything.

I think in actuality you may find that they are some of the gruffest, most backward thinking, negative, ignorant and rude people you’ve met. The personalities, in general, seem to match the bleak, dreary grayness of the area.
I used to live in Brooklyn and thought that JFK was big, but PIA is massive also. ALOT of people park there and then go catch their flights.

I am on my way back to New York from Pittsburgh. I only spent the weekend there but I have enjoyed what I seen, it's very beautiful, far less crowded than NYC. I would like return at some point with the intent on meeting up with someone.

Good morning! Unfortunately realtors in Pittsburgh do not work with rentals. You would simply do a Google search online or search on Zillow.
Lived there for 35 years and my family is still there so I’ll always think of it as home. Mixed feelings about it:

Yes Pittsburgh isn’t diverse at all. For years it was the whitest city in America. The Asian and Hispanic populations are next to nothing and if you’ve heard about the study about Black women living in Pittsburgh, they would fare better in about 99% of other cities in America on every level. This is an issue.
Yeah, I noticed that bit about diversity too. Dude was like, "Yeah we're super culturally diverse" *lists about 4 white nationalities and a park named after Mexico that he specifies is not populated by hispanic people*

@@KrysPaxton San Francisco Bay Area, Washington DC/ Northern VA, Nashville. Pretty much anywhere but Pittsburgh, it’s just not a place you want to be as a 20 or 30 something. Unless you love the Pittsburgh Steelers and hanging out in bars talking about the Steelers.
Moving to Pittsburgh because I found a huge house for 129000…. Same house would be 400000 in middle TN… tired of being broke, I am use to Pitt, so yeah!!! BUT yes the driving there sucks

If you live in the inner city then you have this whole area of local businesses called The Strip it great.
Yep, I know it well. It’s going through a MAJOR revival or was pre-covid. Have to wait & see how it shakes out after Covid is gone.

Well that would depend on what of lifestyle or workplace you need to be close to.

@@AceLopez115212 is reserve Township, great area. So, now, it depends on your lifestyle. If you have a family you're raising you want to go north where there are neighborhoods. If you prefer the city life, you would go south.

300k range gets you pretty much nothing in North Jersey outside of NYC…. Getting all New Yorkers here housing is very low now, everything going over asking even fixer uppers…. To get something decent 200k or even less that’s incredible! Not like NJ doesn’t have traffic and high taxes to….. highest property tax in country or very close.

So, I know this video isn't the most recent anymore and maybe nobody's even watching the comments, but might as well try! I was wondering how folks figure how friendly the city is to someone with Type 1 diabetes? That's pretty much the only thing I can't seem to figure out online by myself.
Maybe contact a diabetes doctor & get in the Pittsburgh know about it. I’m not sure any city would be friendly/unfriendly. Isn’t it a diet relevant disease?
@@briansellspittsburgh It's not really to do with diet in my case, not anymore, anyway. Type 1 is pretty easy on restrictions if you've got a good handle on insulin intake. The thing that I'm wondering about is... I tend to be stupidly forgetful, and I once left my insulin injector behind at a restaurant and it took me forever to slog through the bureaucracy to get a replacement at a very, very large hospital. That's unlikely to happen again, but I wanna cover all my bases and find someone to ask about whether it'd be a big problem to get something like that sorted out if it's at a hospital other than my home one. So yeah, I'll probably reach out to an insider in the local health department! :)

Looking to relocate from State College. Pittsburgh has so much more to offer and more housing options than our small town. Love that I could get a renovated apartment or condo with a nice view for half the price of a dated 60’s shack in a boring neighborhood in State College.

I wouldn't say any one AREA floods. It depends on where the house is. We don't have much flooding problem. As far as O'hara being a "good area", depends on what? Walkability, schools, crime? I can say, it is a desirable area. Hope that helps! Are you planning on renting or purchasing when making the move?

Bloomfield seems to be pretty popular for younger students, elder students tend to like Southside, Shadyside, and Squirrel hill.

May be moving there for my wife she’s going to law school and this is one of her options as is a few other places that accepted her, thing is I’m a nurse so I can get a job anywhere, but I’m looking at it from the standpoint of she’s Mexican American and so my two boys are as well. You said cultural diversity, I’m from San Antonio so 55% or so is Hispanic here what can I expect from that standpoint.
So I don't know any stats and unfortunately I've never been to San Antonio but I feel we would have less cultural diversity then you are experiencing. I recently started doing business in Miami where the cultural diversity is pretty high. Compared to Miami, Pittsburgh has a low cultural diversity but, with a lot of people relocating in the Pittsburgh that's changing in the right direction versus staying status quo or becoming less diverse. Hopefully that helps.

I haven't been to Memphis but I've been to Nashville and Tennessee is super hot and muggy. Our summers are the crap shoot. Sometimes it rains all summer the last two summers have been hot and muggy. Mid 80s sometimes the low 90s.
It gets a little hotter here than Nashville. Plus its extremely humid. So far this summer, almost every day it has been 100+... even the nights are hot 🥵

Would you say Pittsburgh is a safe place to live? I see cheap houses but I'm afraid that it will be too dangerous to be there. Are there very dangerous areas? If so, what are they? Great video!
So I would say just like any city, there are places that are safer than other places of the city. It would be a reasonable assumption that where there's cheaper housing, there might be a higher crime rate. Plenty of online Avenues to explore this.
Think about it long and hard. Ask yourself why are the homes cheap. The answer is supply and demand, people generally aren’t beating down doors and getting into bidding wars to move to Pittsburgh.
Its funny they interviewed long time residents there and they all basically said they were sick of Pittsburgh.

The Pirates won the World Series in 1960, 1971, and 1979. Perhaps before that as well. You say Pittsburgh has a lot of cultural diversity, but European immigration from long ago isn't a very strong case at all.
The city itself is diverse due to the University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon among others coming to study and end up living here.
It's far more diverse than a lot of cities in the US lmao

You reference no earthquakes, yet you make no mention of mine subsidance throughout the city, also, freezing sub zero temps that cause water mains to burst, not to mention rock slides, and who knows what toxins persistent in the soil, old water infrastructure, it was so toxic you had to worry about the black water silt in your tap water.

Los Angeles is well-know for being car-centric in its design and policy decisions, but many cities, and nearly all suburbs, in the US and Canada are built more for cars than pedestrians or cyclists. The channels Not Just Bikes and City Beautiful have both done really good videos on this. I like that Pittsburgh has a density and walkability (and access to public transportation) that a lot of cities in the US do not.

I'd have to research it because I don't know much about it but, I get contacted through CZcams by a whole bunch of families with special-needs children, especially autism, about how great Pittsburgh schooling is. That info must just be out there.

I’m out on Collier County. Florida is horrible for special needs families. And legislation isn’t on the side of special needs - Florida law even says that hearing aid and audiology doesn’t need to be covered under medical insurance. It’s insane. But y’all have so much services in PA, NJ and MA! PA has always been on the top 5 list for autism.
Don't get too excited. Don't get fooled by videos about Pittsburgh, you drive 3 minutes outside of any main road in Pittsburgh and you're in Pennsyltucky. Where all the racist inbred backwoods chicken noodle soup eating hillbillies. They literally fight and die over their tiny zip codes with 300 people in them. Look up the Median Income of ANYONE living in PA. 90% of the state is WELL below poverty. Ever wonder why PA is such an old huge state but has like no one living in it? Pittsburgh has a tiny population, Philadelphia is crowded with junkies. Where do you think the gov't sends all those through work programs and halfway houses? CENTRAL PA. And you're right between it all, in Pittsburgh:) Enjoy the shithole, crazy steep mountains with bad drivers and walking through the ENTIRE city and all it's amenities in 3 days. Pittsburgh has trees, I mean lots of trees. Trees fall on cars, power lines, and houses.
There are steep hills that have never been developed for homes, business or industry.
The only thing on these hills are trees.
On a positive note, trees equal shade and beautified the area, especially in the Spring and the fall.

I live in Somerset Pa and live within 10 miles of both ski resorts and five State Parks are within 15 minutes. Left Pittsburgh five years ago and retired here in the mountains. We live in Somerset Borough, so a beautiful little quaint town. And it's so great 👍👍
