- I recently released a video called "Why I Regret Buying a Ford Lightning" to my surprise, the video went viral. The video was watched so many times and had so many great comments it prompted a call from FORD. This video is a recap of the conversation with Ford and opens sharing of additional feedback and suggestions for change.

The cost. If I am ever going to buy an electric vehicle, the price has to be better. No one wants to go to a dealership and see $100k for a vehicle or tons of markups. At that rate, I personally will never buy one. Thank you for sharing your experience and story with this Lightning truck.
Thanks for the feedback. I agree sticker shock is real. I think they are coming out with some more affordable versions but they will not be as inexpensive as a gas car for the near future.
@@JettersGarage xlts were like in 60k range extendeds are 70 ish but yah thats high for 80% of people.
You can go to a Chevy or Nissan dealership TODAY and get a brand new 2023 EV for 25K or 28K in a Bolt or Leaf respectively.
Just because you can buy an EV for 90K doesn't mean you have to or that's how much you have to pay. There are a lot of EVs available under the average price of a new ICE vehicle.
@@wolfshanze5980 Exactly the problem isn't the price it's wants. They WANT way more than what their wallets allow.
Until price and range match gas vehicles no dice!
It is great that they reached out to you. Blaming old code and being new to making electric vehicles are very poor excuses for the problems with the truck. It either means nothing was ever tested in the real world, or they thought what you got was fine. Sending these trucks out to the public before they were ready for sale is a really bad show. Especially with a company that has been making cars for over 100 years. From all of the other videos I have seen about this truck, it was not designed or tested adequately. The Ford dealer in my area has a whole lot full of them with battery issues or waiting to be cleared for sale. It's not a good look for Ford and their owners.
Windows operating system is what it is today because Bill Gates released to the public prematurely, let the public fix the bugs for him. Sure saves a lot of time on research and development.
Very true. Design verification and system validation testing is essential during the product development process. It is very surprising they missed these issues and speaks to how Ford is being run these days.
Amen for them being proactive. You should charge them for this feedback.
Yeap, I was seriously considering a lightning... not touching it now. I love my F250 but It sounds like Ford is really screwing the pooch... That they have to contact a random you tuber for advice on what to do says everything... Hire some F ing professionals to make your car user friendly FFS.
You mean like covid vaccines lol i never got that either
Thanks Jet!! My Ford Lightning experience was very similar to yours. From the inability to get my Pro Charging station from Sunrun, to the horrific App that hasn't worked for 3 of the 5 months I've owned my Lightning, losing the $7500 tax credit because Ford raised the cost by $8500, and lastly, the lack of communication from Ford. All of which are simply unacceptable. Even with all of that, I absolutely love the truck, itself. It is phenomenal. Another funny (sad) thing was that Ford sent me a picture of my truck rolling off the line, telling me how excited I should be to finally have it delivered to my dealership... 4 months AFTER I took delivery. Really?? Ford?? Unacceptable.
You didn’t experience one failure. You got failures on several entirely different levels. It makes me wonder if the situation is more a “feature” of the buying experience than a series of “bugs”
Wow... So crazy how the process could be so inconsistent. Hope they iron out all the bugs.
* UPDATE * Now that I finally got my Pro Home Charger install properly by a licensed electrician, things are looking up. HOWEVER... the newest "glitch in the Matrix" is that the Pro Charger has an internal ambient temperature shut off "fault" set at 113degF. What this means for Southeastern TX where its routinely 105 this summer is that the charger faults every 30 minutes to cool down. It automatically fires back up, only to fault again. So, even when charging OVERNIGHT, I wake up with 16 to 18 "Something went wrong..." notifications. It charges the truck, but this is another unacceptable situation. Calls to Ford EV "expert" didn't result in any fix. After much research on my own, it sounds like a software update push would fix the issue. Ford "expert" said they knew nothing about it. HUMPH!
So sorry that has to be maddening.
The US Tax Payer does not need to give you $7,500 so you can buy a $80k-$110k Truck.
I love traveling, going long distances, until it's dark and more. My 2003 Ranger needs gas, which I can pick up in any small town along the way. It takes 5 minutes and I'm back on the road, doing what I love to do. I'm 70, unless they make an electric Ford Ranger that looks like what I have, and goes as far as I like to go, I'll stick with what I have.
Steve: I hope you have a choice!😊
Have an '02 Ranger. Agree💯%.
@@ramblerdave1339 I love my 02 ranger/4.0 litre but not as much as my 23 Bronco😁
Charging network: Make every dealership have a row of 24/7 charging stations. No need to buy new land to install them. The dealerships need to be willing to lose 5-20 parking spots (depending on location and size of dealership).
Thanks for the suggestion!; appreciate the feedback.
Except that it looks like Ford is fighting to detach from their dealers right now….. they created a new corporation to sell EVs direct to consumer.
Dealers close and lock their gates at night & on says they aren't opened. So not sure that would work well.
Ford has already required this. I'm not sure it's 24x7, that's a good recommendation.
If you look at the physical layout of most stealerships, that is a big ask.
I will NEVER BUY a vehicle that requires an app or any other data mining/tracking system. end of line.
Kudos to Ford for using your feedback to take the necessary steps to address these 'growing pains'
Considering the hefty price of these vehicles, operations and especially charging should be seamless and simple...
Thanks for the info. 👍
Sentry Mode. Utilize the camera system on the truck to record attempted break ins. Also get those cameras to work as a dash cam in case of accidents. Also make the battery percentage more accessible on the interior without having to turn the truck all the way on (know this used to be an issue but don't know if it's been remedied yet)
100% agree on all of these...
Milwaukee tools has a button in their batteries that immediately displays the charge. This seems like a no brainer.
Maybe look at some of the companies that are doing well with EVs and copy their features?? You'd think that would be a no brainer.
That is really awesome that they’ve reached out to you and are wanting feedback as they continue to learn. You’re not asking for anything unreasonable so hopefully they do take the feedback and make improvements.
I was encouraged that they want to open a dialogue. I think this can be a win for everyone.
It would be "awesome" if they didn't push lemons out of the door to begin wuth. No excuse for this kind of crap.
"wanting feedback" or doing "damage control" ? Rest assured this channel isn't the only one calling Ford about the problems - it's the complaint video going viral that got their attention.
It's not just the EV buying experience. It's a trend that is dominating the experience of many people who are trying to purchase an ice vehicle like the Bronco or Ranger as well.
Something has gone seriously wrong with Ford's entire process and it extends down to the sales floor of their franchises.
Also by not offering cars that people want. I would love a new modern Thunderbird for example and they just will not make cars for young single guys with some money anymore.
They are selling only glorified minivans for families, which are smaller and shrinking more than ever.
I want style and comfort, not a troop carrier for a bunch of Rugrats.
And my retired father would love a new town car or similar traditional luxury car.
And we've had to look at Kia's and Hyundai's "luxury" cars, which is a travesty for the US auto industry, which will go bankrupt with the next gas crisis, which always happen in cycles.
You think the company that's been making cars for over 100 years old be able to see trends and predict what's coming, everything goes out of style and SUVs are way past their peak.
Invent the new next big thing instead of always chasing GM for short-term gain instead of long-term sustainability.
@@Jack_Stafford Couldn't have said it better, every point you just made. Especially the part about how surprisingly incompetent Ford seems to be at every level nowadays after being such an accomplished veteran company. I was looking forward to a long future with Ford as my new personal preference for cars after getting my Focus hot hatch, which is super awesome. But I knew something was wrong when the line was discontinued right afterward
I'm interested in the Ford F150 lightning. To me Charging without the APP is a requirement. When I heard it required the App it was a major red flag in my mind. Don't think we need a button to start charging. If I plug in the charge port it should start charging. (Update Eric Roe in his reply said: I've never used the app to charge.)
I didn't understand that either.. if you plug in the lightning at home, do you have to go into the app and ask it to start charging? It doesn't just automatically start charging? My Bolt just starts charging automatically when I plug it in.
Government control of free movement. Just saying
I've never used the app to charge. I'm not sure what he's talking about. You plug in and the car starts to charge. I assume he's talking about delayed charging. Not sure.
@@ericroe Thanks for your reply. Its much better if you plug it in and it starts charging. So its good news for it to charge as you described.
Because they have total control over the car if they want. As someone else said, it's all about control.
Good for you. I put a post, yes, just a post about a mattress company and their trick they pulled on me years ago and they came after me. Legal threat, etc. I am glad Ford is listening and cares.
still driving the 1986 F150 that I bought new for $8600. No EV will ever run that long.
I am a Tesla owner, but the F 150 has been my dream truck. The cyber truck can kick rocks IMO. So glad to hear Ford is taking feedback from owners who are willing to tell the truth about their ownership experience. Thank you and your videos are great.
Why do you hate the planet? EVs are an environmental disaster.
Dude...just like wind turbines

@@yvetteveres8235 There's a sucker born every minute.
It's good they are taking suggestions but they are learning on their customers hard earned money! EVs are not ready for primetime. Some company needs to make a small format EV, two and four door. The smaller size will increase the range and smaller price will increase acceptance. But alas battery technology is not economical enough to do that. They need to sell high-end vehicles to make up for technological cost. Couple that with government mandates and a not very robust charging networks destin's EV buyer to major issues for years. Soon charging cost are going to be equal to fuel cost. They may be good for some families but not most!
I was at the signing table for a new ford lightning last week and backed out after going outside and watching your video.
I can bet Ford is happy a reasonable and intelligent guy went viral and are open to the opportunity to use your insights. Glad they are, that's smart of them. Good job!
Jet: Why do you prefer an EV rather than a gas engine? (I ask since many have different reasons for an EV.) For me, range anxiety would be a major concern on a long distance trip. I expect that it will be many years before this problem will be fixed. For me, practicality beats flair every time.
I personally prefer EV because it's much cheaper to operate than a gas engine. No oil changes, barely any maintenance at all. Range, for me, isn't an issue. I "fuel up" when I get home and park in my garage. On trips (depending on the EV) it's pretty simple to find charging stations. That is where Tesla is far and away better than any other company. I only go on a handful of trips a year though so the money saved using electricity rather than gas far outweighs range anxiety or taking longer to charge.
My boss has owned and drove a tesla for the past seven years.
He said he is only put fourteen hundred dollars into it
Norwegian perspective: I just realised it was time to let the VW Golf my parents bought in 2000 head out for greener pastures. EVs make up for the vast majority of new car sales here, new, pure ICE cars won't be sold here as of 2025, so... Clearly, for me, a new(er) ICE car was not the way forward. So I went for a VW ID.4 GTX instead. But even without that external motivation, the EV is just...so much smoother. It's sublime comfort and effortless torque. And with the charging network here, plus Tesla having opened up most of their chargers for everyone in Norway, range anxiety just isn't a thing.
So I'd say that for you, the charging network available to you is the big thing to look at, and not the EV itself.
thomas cunningham: no matter what tree huggers and bloggers claim, I do NOT see EVs becoming more practical in the near future. That is almost 8-10 years away. I do not want to sit around, struggling with ridiculous stuff like using a fecrissakes app to charge a truck. What kind of morons designed this thing? If the app doesn't connect, it's too hard to charge the truck. And then the truck might not charge at all. I have NO interest in wasting my hard earned money on an ovepriced battery on wheels.
@@largol33t1 My concern: Ford and GM are moving too fast in pushing EVs onto the public. Range anxiety in America will likely be a big problem for the next 15 years or more. I would prefer that manufacturers produce more standard-hybrid cars. I would consider a hybrid. I have no interest in an EV. I believe that most Americans have NO interest in EVs.
Strange, maybe things have changed at Ford. Years ago I had a Ford escape ( a gas SUV ) that went through 3 transmissions in 100,000 miles. Because the transmission case and transmission front pump were two metals that didn't habitate well together each time I was forced to buy a new front pump ( these are changed out during a transmission rebuild ) I called Ford Customer support at Ford HQ, I wrote letters, emails and left messages, all ignored. I'm not surprised you had your issues, Good luck! As for me after 35 years of Ford ownership I finally got it through my head that loyalty should go both ways and it wasn't so that escape was the last Ford I've owned.
I had an uncle and cousin whose experience with Ford was much the same.
One of the best things they can do is really implement Plug & Charge It is the simplest, most secure way for drivers to charge their electric vehicles. All drivers need to do is connect their EV's charging cable to the charge point, and the vehicle is immediately starts to charge - - with no additional user steps required.
But they want their money. Electricity isn't free just as gas isn't free.
@@partain2000 Who's talking about free? Plug & Charge just automatically bills to your credit card. The protocol just means you plug your car in the charger and it negotiates automatically with the account on the backend. Just like with Tesla Superchagers, it does it all automatically.
@@jeremythesmith If Tesla is doing it that way, why didn't everyone else do it that way? You would still have to have the credit card to use the charger. I think it would still be a problem to use the credit card because the chargers aren't working properly.
@@partain2000 I think you need to do more research.
That is so obvious it is embarrassing that someone needs to point it out to Ford. Most people are going to assume, I get home at the end of the day, plug in the charger, and in the morning the vehicle is ready to go. You know there have to be some WTH moments when owners find out that isn't the case.
I know this will sound simplistic but I would love to see the charger built in to the vehicle so that all we have too do is plug into a 240volt 50 amp Receptacle
The more and more I hear about EV’s the more and more I can justify gas prices. Originally I was intrigued by EV’s but then the headache stories started and most of all when it feels like the government starts pushing things (anything they push on us) I start to question the motives then I quickly lose interest unfortunately.
Trust but verify, ny internet friend.
It's a good mindset to have.
I've driven EV (cars) since 2017. No regrets. Though I can charge at home. If you can charge at home owning an EV is really trivial (aside from being more expensive).
"We're from the government and we're here to help."
@chris: legacy isn't good in ev's at all. I have a 2nd Tesla on order. Believe me, they are worth every penny in anyway

Good for you. That doesn’t mean we should all be forced to drive those hunks of shit.
Just found your channel. Thanks so much for the content.
I made a reservation on my F 150 Lightening June 30th, 2021 and have not been able to "order" a truck. The last email that Ford sent to me said that I could order in "early" summer. I currently own a 2022 Toyota RAV4 Prime that I purchased in February of 2022. This car is a plug in hybrid that travels about 40 miles on an electric charge. I like the car, but would LOVE an electric truck that works and is not a pain to operate. Your experience shows me that Ford does not have it figured out. The Toyota RAV4 Prime has been simple and easy to operate. We had an electrician put in a level two charger in the garage for under $500.- This was a licensed and bonded electrician, not a "friend of a friend."
Seems as if I am "lucky" to still be waiting for my F 150 Lightening as Ford must still figure out how to write the software for the Lightening. Thank you for the honest review. Most channels are just pumping the product and looking for kick backs from sponsors. I really do want an electric truck that works.
Thanks for the report. I do not own an EV, and I don't plan on getting one.
I'm glad Ford reached out, because they will need the feedback for good improvements.
I'm glad to touched on the Costco gas line when mentioning "you fill up and you're gone in 5 mins". 😂
Cause there is no way in hell you are filling up at Costco in 5 mins, not a f***'n chance! 😂
I can only speak from my experience with EVs. I bought a Tesla in Oct of 21. It has been the best experience I have ever had owning a car in my 25 years of driving. It is so simple. You get in the car and it is on, put it in drive and go. Want to pre heat the car, set a certain time for it to charge, leave for work the same time each day, the app will let you precondition the car for that departure time, the app just does it all and is awesome to use. Driven from Indiana to Florida twice and once to Colorado. Plug in your destination and it tells you when to stop and for how long. Sorry to say but some of the other EVs are great cars but it software and charging infrastructure that are holding them back. Tesla has it all figured out which is why I only considered them. I will let everyone else beta test other brands EVs. If you want a simple EV experience right now go Tesla. It is great that Ford is at least listening. Seems like they need to make sure the people who are making the decisions on their EVs should be forced to drive them to learn from their own experience instead of relying on feedback.
That part about people who are working on the vehicle also being users/owners is key. Things get fixed amazingly fast when it is THEIR problem.
Thank you so much for making the video outlining the problems you've been having with the Ford Pass App. I had to call Ford Customer Service a few days regarding the App as well for F150 lightning and I was transferred 3 different times before I was put the right Rep to talk to regarding my experience with the Ford Pass App. So frustrating using the app for phone as Key 😢😢. The Funny thing is Ford charge $2200.00 as part of a package on the F150 Lightning. Very Very SLOW and lacking a lot of features. Thanks again and I hope your second call goes well with Ford as well 👍👍
I bought a new 1986 Taurus from the showroom in December of 1985. The first year was a nightware, it was in the repair room numerous times. After the first year, it ran for 25+ years 350,000 miles one engine, 3 trannies. My father always told me when I was a teenager, never buy a car the first year it is made.
They're "learning" on your time after you spent $100k on your truck... Neat. Besides the things you mentioned, another thing they could do is sell it for what they advertised without the massive markups. There aren't a lot of people that can afford $90k+ for a truck.
Great video! Thanks for sharing this!!! Compliments to Ford for listening. 👍👍
I'm excited to see where this could go. I think it could be a win for everyone!
It's about time they listen to people's feedback, sometimes engineers don't think out of box to well. It took this kind of approach to make there products better. Until they get there act together, GM here I come!
good luck, GM is having all kinds of issues with their ICE vehicles. They too will have EV issues as they will be learning also
Yes. Also remember this is the unfolding future of the industry.. It's new technology n venture they've undertook. So there's always going to be a learning curve.
GM??!! LMAO, be serious for a moment. You think your experience with GM's electric vehicles will be better? They're further behind the 8 ball than Ford.
@@cwqrpportable I believe you.
While our tastes in vehicles are extremely different, we agree wholeheartedly on one thing: Things just need to work. No fuss, no complications or need for special knowledge. Just have things work.
FORD CEO: We are learning
ALSO FORD CEO: has no problem charging 100K for a truck that has poor software.
To have the best experience with this type of vehicle, I will wait 5 Years for guys like you going to the pain somewhere for anybody else. I don't believe that I will ever own an electric vehicle for many divers reasons anyway. Nice video.
Thanks for the comment and for watching. Appreciate the feedback.
I hope we can keep them. I don't think its should be one or the other. Just keep improving what we have available.
@T.A. Bright We will have gas powered car for the simple fact that that there are about 1.4 billions car. Do you think there are enough minerals on the earth to make batteries to replace them all. I don't think so.
I think it will go to Hydrogen next or they will create a new type of battery. We will have regular gas powered cars for a very long time.
Battery technology is already changing constantly for the better. Sadly there is so much negative propaganda pushed by the right that those folks are getting short changed on seeing where the future is going.
I wanted one really bad, but I kept getting the - you have to pay 20k over MSRP... 3 stealerships said the same thing...
Well I just picked up a 2023 Hyundai Ionic5 for 3750 below MSRP. So the deals are out there.
One of the key components to electrification of vehicles for me is that I do not want to have to adapt to the needs of my vehicle. I grew up in a culture where I never knew a moment that I wasn’t driving or riding in a motorized vehicle. As was noted in the video, you pull up to the gas station and within five minutes you’re filled up and you’re on your way. No need for me to adapt to the needs of my vehicle. It takes five minutes to fill it up. If I want something in the gas station store, I can choose to go in there and not lose a lot of time on a long distance trip. That is so far not the case when using an electric vehicle for long distance, travel. Yes, I realize there is a learning curve that comes along with the introduction of electric vehicles. Unfortunately, because of the interference of government, agencies and political expediency, we are not being allowed to have the amount of time necessary to incorporate the learning curve into the introduction of electric vehicles enmass.
Preach it!
Good video. Glad Iwatched. Solving problems takes EFFORT. Simple.
One of the best things about EVs is being able to remotely control the HVAC so you can warm/cool the cabin in the morning, control the charging start/stop and check on the charge state, and plan longer trips with charging stops that optimize charging with battery preconditioning for fast charging. They also need to move the charge port so they can use Tesla Superchargers that have short cables that don't reach the current location of the charge port.
I agree 1005 on the charge port, all manufacturers need to place the port on drivers side rear.
They have the departure time settings in the fordpass app but you have to set it for certain days and times. You can set it to warm and cool. I wish they included a pre-condition now button for when I know I'm leaving in 30 minutes and it can just start doing it instead of a set day and time each time
That's not at all exclusive to EVs... I have a Tucson Hybrid that does the exact same thing...
@@wolfshanze5980 I meant without running the engine/motor.
@Hiking Lang I'm still not sure that's EV exclusive... as a Hybrid has an electric motor and can do what you say (I can do all that from my phone app on my Hybrid)... well, short of plotting recharge stations because I don't need recharge stations for my Hybrid. 😉
Glad they got in touch with you. One of the few good things about viral videos. The issue with eclectic vehicles is they weigh way more than gas powered ones and the power grids can’t handle that much additional stress and here in California they have no new planed infrastructure to handle the extra load.
They don’t really weigh much more than a similar sized ICE. The Raptor F150 weighs MORE than the Lightning F150. A model S Tesla is only about 100lbs heavier than my Ford Taurus with a full tank of gas.
@@ronlaverdiere interesting. I’m just going by all the reading I’m done on it and industry videos. From what I see online the difference in those two trucks can be between 500 and 1500 lbs. at any rate, thanks for the heads up. I guess everything you see on the internet isn’t true 😂😂
Hello from northern Canada :) I'm a ford owner "diesel" not electric, Now the fill time like you said much longer and needing an app to fill, needs change & the time to fill & the cost of electricity keeps climbing it will be more cost out of your pocket, Now that being said I try to be green as I can as I live 100% off grid & we all know how often your grid goes down in Hot conditions & cold in our different climates, we already have shortage of grid power so that creates a problem for your travel plans, so if we cover all the wheat fields with panels then you go hungry, those are facts, Its really sad that we have politicians that think we can have all transportation 100% green in this world, Reality Not in the next 500 years, But very nice for you to be able to at least put your two cents worth and they listened :))
I’m waiting on delivery of my Lightning. One piece of feedback would be to improve their communication on the order/build/delivery process. A weekly email update stating exactly what happened to my truck that week and where it’s at if it’s already been shipped would go a long ways toward getting people to be more patient.
That is a piece I forgot about. I waited an extra month from when they said it would be delivered. Love it and thanks.
@@JettersGarage I'm in that boat now... Week 3 of shipped and the delivery date slips every other day. FedEx would be out of business if they did that.

That's great that Ford reached out to you. I have owned several of their vehicles and luckily never have had any problems. I hope they continue to do the right thing and strive to make reliable and hopefully "affordable" vehicles.

@@irfanhusein1445what do you like more about the Mache E than that of the model 3?
@@omarsub6125 the Mach E is quieter, less wind noise at 80 mph, rides better and feels more solidly built. @@irfanhusein1445 Ah okay. we have both the Model 3 and the model Y, and I prefer the Model Y. Model 3 is a great car, but the Model Y is just more suitable for me. Ride “quality” is also better on the model y compared to that of the model 3. But idk how it compares to a Mache E.
@@omarsub6125 already owning a model 3 I was actually inclined to my the model y as my next EV. I test drove both the model Y and the Mach E. The ride quality was similar, the Y was a little more spacious, the acceleration in the Y was somewhat better as well. However the Mach E seemed more well built. It eventually came down to interior and exterior styling and my wife and I both preferred the mach e. Sadly I only get to drive it when we are together😊
I’ve had a Mustang Mach-E for six months and have driven nearly 10K miles. I’ve had ZERO issues of any kind. I love it more today than when I bought it. I’ll probably never buy another gas powered car again.
I am a long time owner of different brands of pickup trucks. When I no longer tow a car trailer long distances, I look forward to trying out a Lightening. Right now I have a 2022 F150, and it is the best truck I've owned by far. In the mean time, thanks for being part of the solution, instead of part of the problem. As Red Green used to say: I'm pullin for you, we're all in this together.
My '22 Powerboost is by far the best trucked I've owned too.
Glad to see Ford reach out to you! I'm thinking of a Lightning or maybe the conventional gas truck, it will happen within 8 months. One of the biggest hurdles for me is corrupt stealerships and the crap they try to pull off! I went on a local dealership lot, Larry H Miller Draper Ford and couldn't believe the mark ups from MSRP! The stealerships make car buying a terrible expeience! I'm hoping the talks of Ford possibly selling direct to the consumer come true! Ford needs accountability from the dealers!
To be fair, the markup exists because 1 demand far exceeds supply, and 2) dealers make almost no profit on sale of a lighting or mach-e. That being said adding 10k+ markups is a bit much.
True, dealer lot vehicles get $added, but if you make a reservation, then find a dealer who will sell at MSRP (or lower, see Granger Ford, DesMoines, Iowa) that is the way to go (get an agreement in writing).
@@GhostlyGhille Demand doesn't exceed supply anymore. The Ford dealers by me are crawling with trucks. I remember during the pandemic thinking the dealership closed due to lack of anything on the lot but now the lot is full not one empty space.
@Zancrus My dealership isn't they could ship us 70 superduties 60 broncos and 20 expeditions and 20 explorers we'd sell em all in a week. What's slowing us isn't pricing it's the freaking interest, a 50k truck would've been about 615-650 payment in 2020-22, is now 750-790 with excellent credit 2,000 down and a relatively even trade/payoff. Throw that together with gas groceries and general bills being 2x what it was. It's night and day what the current administration has done to our economy. Trust me when I say no car salesman is enjoying the asinine prices and interest. It's much better to sell 15-20 cars at a reasonable price than it is to sell 5-8 in this current market.
#1 thing a EV owner needs is on the map where are chargers. And are the chargers you are headed for working, occupied and what speed. The one thing tesla has over all other brands. 2 way communications to the charge network
100% agree. Need more control from the dash.
I am writing from Spain. I am the owner of a Mustang Mach-E. I really like the car. One suggestion I can make to Ford is to change the way the charging limit is set through the app or in the car. They should remove the list of locations and simply ask each time I'm about to charge what the charging limit I want at that moment is, and that's it. Something simple that can be changed at any time without being tied to the charging location.
I like your experience with the truck and not the typical talking points about this truck and EV's in general.
I’d love to see some base model f150 lightnings available at msrp. I know pipe dream right…
We need on screen charging information while charging. I want to know kilowatts going to the pack. Also need more data while driving.
Great info on both of your videos! I too was going to put an order in for a Lightning but the wait was too long! I found a great deal on a F250, diesel 2022 in the fall of 2021. It was a special order and a basic model that the person defaulted on. I put a Leer topper custom painted, a CapPackSports compartment, and lined with a custom Bedrug. Beautiful truck but I am currently looking for a swap with a lightning “unhappy” customer, hint hint lol! Hopefully everything you mentioned in your videos will be corrected and the purchasing of one will no longer have a long wait.
Thanks for this video. I'm still debating my next purchase being Hybrid or EV. My concern is 5, 10 and 15 year cost of ownership, plus cost of my time and convenience vs the Hybrid. I would be willing to pay $2,000 per year not to have to plug and unplug , open the door set the charging , put the cord away.... everyday for the next 15 years. If I move. Oh, I need to hire an electrician again. Hey, could you put up pickle ball courts at your charging stations? I'm a bit more active than back-lit screen entertainments. Time is the greatest cost in my life. Technology is suppose to help with time not make it worse.
There are some great advantages to all electric if you stay within a 200 mile a day range. If you go over that you need to start planning for charging on outside charges. If you are towing or doing long distance you should be looking at a hybrid.
@@JettersGarage Yeah basically I travel 350 miles each way every other weekend eight months out of the year throwing in Atlatl competitions. My daily commute is about 3 times per week to store, hardware and that sort, no more than two miles from home. I don't have much short mileage but have lots of long trips. Last year I put 12,000 on my new Forester and 2,000 on my 07 Tribeca. 34 mpg all hi-way and 17 mpg all city in the old Tribecca. Toyota hybrid initial cost was too high when I ran the numbers for 5 and 10 year compared to the Forester. But I splurged for the extra 5 years more warranty so I could trade at high value in which the Forester still sets on top of used car value. In 3 years I could pop for a hybrid or EV if it can do 400 miles on a charge. I need room for camping gear. It is hard for me to give up the handling and ride of the Subbie. But Subbie is working with Toyota on their excellent hybrid system. Just hasn't come to the Forester yet. In trade Toyota gets Subbie's excellent all wheel system. Honda is out of it for now and Hyundai is still kicking butt. It's crazy times going into these first years of switching over to EVs!
It would be great to use the 360 camera system as a security system. Motion activated and send recorded video to thumb drive or portable USB drive so it could be easily transfered.
I like the idea. Good suggestion.
@@JettersGarage I like that idea as well. I own a new 3.5EB with 360 and this would be an awesome idea as well.
I can’t believe Ford didn’t already do that!
@@tscoff they will, but you will end up paying a subscription fee for it.
My wife and I both drive 2012 Chevrolet Volts and I can set up charging times from the dash. I am surprised that 11 years later Ford didn't have this.
I am a mopar guy personally. But I wish you good luck with your ForD - your gonna need it. JeeP wrangler 392 all the way.
Check out OCMotivators channel if you love Mopar.
And after all your efforts to contact customer service and get this sorted out, all you really needed to do is make a video go viral. If that’s what you had to do, then they have a lot of work to do with their customer service processes.
I have two Teslas and a 2011 F150 5.0L
For a first attempt at an electric truck, the Lightning is really good. Because Ford decided to go 'quick to market' there are some shortcomings to be expected. Take a look at Sandy Munro's teardown of the Lightning and you'll see what I mean. The imperfect customer experience with the first gen is also to be expected. The next generation Lightning is supposed to be a clean sheet EV. That will only make it better.
Ford needs to address how much it is going to cost to replace the battery and what the labor charge will be if it is out of warranty. I have heard that it will cost $35,000 just for the battery. Those costs should be on the Window Sticker and guaranteed throughout the life of the vehicle. I am a retired school teacher and my wife is a retired auto executive. We consider ourself middle class, but there is no way we could afford the price of the vehicle. The auto companies have left the middle class behind. That is a big mistake on their part.
STATS FOR NERDS.
- I want to know the voltage and current (in amps) that the vehicle is pulling during charge in the vehicle and on the app (I know they added watts last week).
- I want to see efficiency in Wh/mile, not miles/kWh. Make this representation configurable.
- More GOM features. Show the current battery precentage on the guage cluster at all times and estimated battery percentage at destination in the nav UI at all times. We shouldn't have to go digging for it.
- Want 24hr time on the dash/screen? Sure, but it will forget that setting and revert to 12Hr every time you shut the truck off. This is basic stuff that shouldn't happen.
Got my F150 Lightning 3 weeks ago and being a Tesla owner for a couple of years, the Ford software experience and functionality has been a disaster by comparison. I know it's nearly impossible for an old car company like Ford to adopt modern sotware release engineering and deployment, but they need to get their act together or they'll never catch up.
I had a feeling they’d be reaching out to you. Good job! It shows your video is getting traction, and you were very informative. Like I said in my last comment, that app is trash even for gas jobs (and my diesel haha). You never told me what you had cooking in the garage, by the way. Saw something that looked like it was a white classic - or something in primer.
Yes sir, I have a 64 Lincoln Continental that I'm doing a complete resto mod on. It's going to be amazing but a HUGE project.
@@JettersGarage i wouldn’t mind some vidyas about that sir!
@@JettersGarage also, if you’re interested, one of my professions is graphic, design, video editing, and pretty much anything to do with the web and coding… I’d be happy to put together a kick ass, intro and logo and help you get some merchandise going. Just tell your friends about me or give me a little plug or some thing no charge otherwise seems like it is going to be an awesome channel. Keep up the good work.
@@TonyLasagna what's a good email for you? Would love to see what you come up with.
Good video Jett. thanks for sharing. I’ve owned my 2023 Pro now for 7 months and I am approaching 13k miles. I’m starting to see there’s some creature comfort things that I would like them to address. Alow there to allow functionality (probably add it as a menu item within the feature section on the touchscreen) to disable the Frunk beeper and the rear back up beeper. I’ve seen a few comments online where people are going Rambo and removing speakers, removing wire, rerouting wires and soldering in solenoids- and all kinds of things. I really don’t want to dig into my brand new truck like that. Ford really needs to step up quickly and address this issue. Overall in the feature section of them dashboard menus, I would like to see more functionality for the owner to turn things on or if they decide to turn things off There are plethora of things that I just don’t want to use don’t need to use, but with the systems design today you’re forced to use them.
As an owner the thing I don’t like the most is the software updates make no sense. Some people are way ahead of others some way behind. I just want the newest software.
1. The maximum effective range of an excuse is zero meters!
2. If you buy a non-Tesla EV, you are asking for problems.
3. How do I charge my Tesla MY? I plug it in. Done. Seamless. Simple.
4. How does Tesla update its EVs and apps? OTA updates.
Good points, thanks for sharing!
Tesla ranked 19th in reliability in 21 and 22 , you can't say they don't have problems . I had a Model S , it was a cheap built POS.
Doing a tow/payload capacity demo and how it affects real world range would be a great video.
Well, a great video for people who are looking to buy a Lightning.. maybe not so good for Ford. ;)
Charging cable "if wanted" should be part of the order and come with the truck. 5 year old app "shame on ford" thx for sharing
I’d also allow the functionality of having the amp variation on the trucks dash.
Sometimes your house is using heavy power such as cold weather places that run electric heaters or hot places where the A/C had multiple units cooling multiple zones of a home and such and if the truck is pulling 80amps but your panel is rated at 200… that doesn’t leave a lot of wiggle room for anything else to be running in the background.
What bothers me a lot these days is that every expects you to have a smart phone and use it to run there product. For instance, my 2020 Escape no longer has a remote start on the key fob but you need to have a smart phone or ipad to use it. That also means to have internet connection. That does not work when you have no wifi.
Seems to me that they should make a stand alone solution. Like you stand a button on the dash.
Personally, I will be not going to an electric vechicle for many years until they and the goverment and power companies get their act together. I just don't think any other the companies have come up with a good alternative to the combustion engine.
Thanks for the taking the time to post and talk with Ford. Maybe eventually someone will get it right.
Just some thoughts from an old software developer and user of devices. 1) Why do you need a button or app to charge? Shouldn't you just plug it in and it does what it needs to do? 2) I agree with you about not wanting to have to pay the company to install you charging device at your home. The local electrical codes and associated permits are better handled by local electricians or contractors rather than someone who is probably not from the area. 3) I am not a fan of every item I use needing to put an app on my phone or computer to work. Items should work just fine standalone. If someone wants an app they can use, however, is someone doesn't want the app, it should not be required. Glad Ford got back with you and keep us posted on the progress. I hope this will result in a better Ford product and hope some of the other manufacturers are watching.
I agree with not wanting to use an app. That being said it is nice to have for checking on charging level and other features for the truck. That being said Less is definitely more.
I grew up loving Ford but over the last 20 years Ford in my opinion has abandoned the customer and ignored what we want and need. I don’t go to a Ford Dealership because of the bad customer service and lack of affordable options that can last and not break down. Plus the Ford Credit system has never approved me but Honda did and Honda has been very good to me. Not perfect but Honda takes care of me. I miss that in Ford. I still miss my compact Ranger that was affordable and easy to fix when time came on parts that ran their course but now I can’t afford any Ford and I hear constant complaints by people of engine, transmission and other failures. Many Ford and GM/Chevy users are now driving Honda, Toyota and Hyundai cars because they make them last and was affordable but majority of people buy used and pay off waiting because new cars are over priced and hard to work on now.
Recently received my LIghtning and Love it. The app not so much. I have had many problems. I agree any function they have the app do should also be on dash. That includes charge history. Great video.
Thanks for the follow up video on your experience with Ford. Glad they called and engaged with you on the issues you are having.
I about choked on my coffee when you quoted the rep saying that the problem with the app is "old code" What a piss poor excuse for bad planning.
Ford has developed the Co-pilot360 software for the dashboard screen featuring Rear view camera, Pre-Collision Assist, Lane-Keeping system and adaptive cruise control. I had the opportunity to play with Co-pilot360. I was impressed. And pairing mobile devices is the easiest and best I've seen from Ford.
My opinion on the missteps of the Ford Lightning EV --- Great product that Ford got to market pretty fast in competition with the other major car manufacturers. They completely dropped the ball on a software solution to manage charing. I don't think it's old code. I think it's very poorly written code that they put out there... Oops! And it should be an app available in the dashboard LCD screen, not requiring a smart phone. What if you don't own a smart phone... do you have to go out and buy one?
Henry Ford's wife (I think her name was Clara) drove an electric car that I think was made by GE. That car is on display at the Henry Ford museum. That in itself should have sent a message to Ford execs and designers. Make it easy and simple to use.
1. Chargers at dealers where only Fords can charge
2. 360 cameras should automatically come on when sensors detect objects
3. Charging speed info
Glad to hear Ford is working hard, I’m keeping my Lightning for the long run
My Brother in law has a Lightning and i drove it for a couple weeks, My 1 update i would like to see is a way to set a max charge of 90% to help save the battery. Currently you have to set it per location not a always charge 90% and then when you are doing Long distance drive you can then do a 100% override.
Great to know that Ford instead of doing proper R&D and having the infrastructure in place before the sell a product to the customer. Nope Ford goes give us the money now and will figure things out only after people complain. And the fix sounds like its years away if they havent figured out the app yet. But we will still sell these vehicles to the public.
Actual, real life Chemistry and Physics tell us that from production through consumption, gasoline is STILL the cleanest, most efficient way to power an automobile.
Great vid and kudos for being honest about your experience with Ford. I personally was two mouse clicks too slow for the initial release of the Lightning in Canada back in Nov 2021. Ford held my deposit for the following model year and next round of Canadian built units for 2022 only to discover when I attended my preferred dealership for a pre-sales meeting ( I was at top of the list for next round) that FORD had bumped the price up by $17,000 for an XLT trim level. (LIKE REALLY ?? - ONE YEAR LATER ? GOUGING MUCH ? ) Needless to say I found the $90k + price tag a little excessive for a pensioner even though I expected price to be somewhat more than a similarly equipped ICE version. Loved everything I was reading about the Lightning but had to settle for a Jeep Wrangler 4xe plug in hybrid. Actually pretty happy about that decision as I'm getting 50 kms of all electric range. Thousands of $$ cheaper and have the option of driving across country without long waits at a charger. So yes, no range anxiety at all. IMO, Electric SUVs and pickups will dominate North American market sales within next 10 years. People are slow to trust anything new but Evs and hybridEVs aren't exactly new anymore are they ?
Thanks for posting, I met a guy who deeply regrets buying his Ford! He said it’s the biggest piece of manure he has ever owned! Junk!
Thanks for the video! Are you able to just use the travel charger with the 240V adapter? This is what I use on my model Y
I too am glad Ford reached out to you and I’m considering an electric truck so this was very interesting and helpful
Its a good thing you explain how a gas vehicle works... nobody would have figured that out. Sarcasm aside, it's rare to see a company reach out for a change.
As an owner of the truck and owner of the FCSP. 1. Include all the details of the charging session on the vehicle (in near-real time). Having to wait till the end of the charging session is not great. 2. Also add realtime stats and notifications when the charger disconnects from the backend network. My charger disconnected from the backend and had I not opened the app and specifically accessed the charger I wouldn't have noticed. 3. if there's software updates don't show them as "warning/alerts" on the app once they are successfully applied and allow to "clear" the notification. It takes over 24hrs for that "warning" to clear. The update work.. great.. notify me.. and move on.. Don't leave a warning as if the update had failed. 4. Open up some of the APIs for this to allow a community to build around ease of accessing some of the data. Do it securely and roll it out slowly. I think that will help with improving the app. No I don't want some randomly developed app to be able to make changes to the vehicle (not yet) but at least to see my data.
This is the first video of yours that I've seen, but as someone who's retired from a 35 year career as a software developer, I get the instant impression that you are too.
You should get a consulting fee that is what they pay software validation department to do (do know how much they get paid).
Ford pulled the ultimate bait and switch with the F-150 Lightning! I reserved mine the Day THAT RESERVATIONS OPENED!! After waiting 18 months to finally configure my vehicle, only the two most expensive trims were available or I would have to wait another year. Then to top it off Ford wouldn’t protect the price in effect at the time of my reservation! It went up $19,000!! Screw them! I cancelled my reservation and couldn’t be happier that I did!
My brother in law's wife crashed their Tesla Model 3... it's been 4 months since and they still haven't gotten it back because they can't get parts.
Being an early adopter has numerous unanticipated costs.
Captain Ford dude . Nice . Everyone needs to own a Ford at lest once in their life.
I am very glad you ask your viewers for comments. I understand why you want a new app for EV but I have a 2022 F450 and like one app for both so please improve and cover all Fords. I would like to see more info in the vehicle when charging such as the rate, not just percentage of charge. I want all of my selections in one place, today you set charge times in the app and charge limit in the truck, that is crazy. I also need to know how you got retractable steps, I did not have that option when I ordered even though when I answered the survey I requested them as an option!
There are Ford dealerships in every single town and city, sometimes multiples. This is true even in Rural America, and outside the US. Dealerships and the factory need to collaborate and install chargers in every single dealership. Instant nationwide network. Number of chargers depends on volume of sales and population, with a minimum of 2. NO ONE else is doing this, and dealerships have lots of parking space, especially if they clean up the back lot. Have the chargers out front or just off to the side. It would show their dedication and commitment to the EV industry and set a standard for the network. You'd still have to pay for the energy you charge, but what a difference that would make!
My dish washer starts with a button wich also has a up to 12 hour delay avalible. So why not on a car/charger?
I’m a Tesla owner here. Would love a traditional pickup truck EV (not the cyber truck). If they want feedback on how things work, they should just rent a Tesla for a week. Look at the Tesla app and the functions and just copy it all. A button to start charging? Why so you need a button at all? On a Tesla you attach the charging cable and it starts charging or charges according to the schedule you have entered on the touch screen or the app.
Great content, thank you
I just added to my TSLA position after this video. Thanks
Definitely a real pain having to subscribe to 20 different company to charge anywhere instead of just taking credit/debit card to pay like gas station. Ultra stupid decision from charging network.
Any software they create for the electric vehicle. Allow from the beginning that people can repair their own stuff. Do not require all the ID syncing, proprietary enabling by only FORD dealerships, etc. Fully support the right-to-repair that we have always enjoyed.
Learning and improving with the customer’s time and money - way to go to break into the EV market. Go Ford Go
They probably need customer feedback to help fight the battles in their corporation. But the fact that they are reaching out for constructive criticism is a hopeful sign.
Hey man, i really enjoy see your vídeos about F 150 electric truck.
What i can say is this: You are a very lucky guy.
in my country we can only dream driving a f150, any kind of truck.
Therefore, my experience, is only see lots of vídeos about ford f150. My favorit is the tremor, but i don't know how it feels driving one.
congratilations for the job you have donne. best regards
Cold Canadian winters greatly reduce the efficiency of EVs.
Great job.
I just saw a video showing vehicles at charging stations. Next to and connected to the charging stations were huge industrial-type diesel generators creating the electricity needed to charge the vehicles.
