- Over the last few months I’ve been spending a lot of time in the garden trying to get on top of things before summer. I show you the progress with the lawn, general clean up of the garden, and planting trees and flowers. I also build a compost out of cedar. If you’re a connoisseur of wood chipping then you’ll enjoy this video too.

I imagine the entire township is happy to have this beautiful home being restored. Keep it up.
Can't believe how large your yard actually is after all of the clean up and junk removal.
Yes. At first it all looked like just a lone abandoned house but now it's a mansion!
I know right!!
Hes got two kids, has a formerly abandoned home and huge garden. The next thing they should expect is a large, fluffy, bunny-like creature with an umbrella
That attic didn't even have any soot sprites though! The spirits might not be very active in that neighborhood.
Don't know what you talking about
Totoro!
@@SwissTanuki he is talking about a Japanese Animation movie lol。Totoro
@@JD-pp6ze his profile pick is literally totoro so most likely he is portraying him. He is trying to joke that he doesn’t now what the comment talking about.
The communal tree planting is the most wholesome thing ever.
Documenting this series feels almost like just as much work as doing up the house! Thank you for creating this, I really look forward to each episode (and dad jokes)!
Jaya, I know that this is backbreaking labor, but I would bet that every task you complete gives you an immense sense of satisfaction because it is, after all, your home. Hard to believe this is the same overgrown, broken down house you bought way back when. I watch every episode with excitement, eager to see how much has been accomplished on this gorgeous home. Keep the progress videos coming, and may your family STAY SAFE AND HEALTHY!
Thanks so much. Yes, I do get great satisfaction from it, also from seeing my family and friends enjoying it too.
I just found this channel two days ago, now I'm sad on I've run out of videos. Can't wait for the next one!
Keep up the good work!
The beauty in planting trees is that you're not doing it for yourself; you're passing them down to the generations that follow. It's wonderful that your friends went out and purchased your family that cherry tree, for the same reason.
With the right care, that maple will be *amazing* and you're children will picnic under them with their grandchildren.
Or it’ll be cut like a lot of the others trees and plants were in these videos.
I feel like I might be sad when the house is actually finished at this rate. Your videos are very relaxing to watch. Would you consider vlogging occasionally about the garden and Japanese life? kinda as you did in the video about Sado island? Anyway, thank you for sharing your journey with us. I feel like I'm living vicariously through you lol.
Yes, I think I'll try to do some videos like the Sado Island one, get out to other parts of Japan and film traditional houses, abandoned houses, renovation projects, rural life etc.
@@TokyoLlama Please. One can never have too much Japan. :)
this guys really out here playing animal crossing irl
My first thought lol it was like listening to myself planning my island
Ahh to be able to do all that irl... I could never
I was literally thinking - “oh but if you place that tree there, you may want to move it! Are you sure?” 😂 literally thought of animal crossing every time I saw him cutting down or planting a tree 😆
Lol I thought it as soon as I seen him in the garden at the beggining xD
I've literally been playing his videos in the background of me playing haha
Lol. I was going to write exactly this!
lol your wife's look of disappointment after "yuzuless" made me cackle
Sofia FP I laughed too.
15:13 if you missed it
Ha ha excellent 😂
dad jokes are strong with this one
that was the best part. peak comedy
imagine your kids in the future showing your grand kids this video of their grandpa and all of his hard work
One thing I love about these updates is "not everything is perfect". So many improvements or "how to" videos end up with a "perfect" result, and I love that this is a realistic showing of how you're addressing each situation... you know, like a person.
Please keep these coming, it's looking great so far!
Edit: Also wanted to say, you seem like a fun, positive dad, including your kids like you have in the project. Wish I'd had a dad like you. :-)
Thanks very much!
As satisfying as this was to watch you clean, rake, roll, drag, haul chop and clear out your yard I couldn't help but think, sometimes being a grown up sucks.
I actually really like this part of being an adult. You have control of how your yard/home look and function. You can have a produce garden for self sufficiency or spend tons of time managing a nice green lawn and flowerbeds. It’s super satisfying to see how much you’ve done at the end of the day. And by the end of the week or month, you have a completely different property that you have a deep connection with
@@xchemicalXladybugx true and having the children get involved, taking pride in their home too.
The garden looks great. The tree planting ceremony is so heartwarming to see. This is so wholesome.
Can't wait to see it all, especially when the cherry tree blooms....oh so beautiful. Can't wait, can't wait. I feel like a schoolgirl... lol.
Hi, please do show us a second round of the garden when all the flowers and trees bloom, specially the Sakura. This was a beautiful video.
Thanks, will do!
The sakura tree scene warms my heart, and it's really special because everyone's actually a part of it.
I can't wait to see this tree and this space grow, it will be splendid and I'm really glad you have made such memorable recordings for it.
Watching you pull the rusted bicycle out of the bushes gave me serious Spirited Away vibes... kept waiting for the River God to pop out and give you a magical acorn 😆
same here lol:)))
Lol....great movie
Ahhh, the rare Japanese bicycle palm tree in fruit, although I think you may have let that one over ripen 🇦🇺🦘😀
Ha ha, no worries, have planted some tyres ready for next season.
Planting the Cherry blossom tree made me so positively emotional...on my mother's 4th birthday, my grandparents decided to plant a wallnut tree. That tree gave amazing wallnuts and grew so large and beautiful. To me it created a bond because I felt like it is linked to my mother. Looking at it I would say: look, its 60 yrs old and look so healthy still! Just like my mother
You: "At this point it's Yuzu-less to us.."
Your partner: ಠ_ಠ
Hahahaha!
his partner is his wife
Just came here to find this comment 😂
But wow, the difference between how it looked outside to now is amazing. It really is true what they say about abandoned houses, they slowly die. You have blown new life to this house and made it a home again. Or at the very least it's well on it's way to become a home again, some more renovations left but still.
It's such a comfort to watch your videos, and see all the beauty and growth. Remembering how your property started out in complete disrepair, and then witnessing you nurture it all with love, hard work, and patience... It's especially uplifting during these stressful, chaotic times. Always looking forward to seeing your content. Keep up the wonderful work! This is the most yuzu-ful video I have seen all month.
Ha ha, very good! Thanks.
Watching you renovate this beautiful home is 100x better than watching those home reno shows on tv
I couldn't stop laughing after that pun, mostly cause the wife's expression immediately after it XD Will be nice to see how that sakura does.
That yuzu-less pun got me 😂 also love the matching check shirts! Amazing seeing the progress, always so happy when you upload another video 👍🏻
I was hoping you'd plant a sakura tree. Can't wait to see them next spring.
@MewSn0wk1tty it would only add to the whole asthetic.
I think it would look pretty with pink petals.
And it's only for one month every year.
He has managed to turn this whole house around, a few petals would be easy peasy lemon squeezy
Overrated.
He did, towards the end, they even had a planting ceremony for it and everything
I'm just happy when people give love to old buildings
"Huskvarna" just means "House -mill", it is a small swedish town where the factory was, they used to make almost everything, from fridges to rifles over here in Sweden.
The Q is just a remnant of before Sweden created a single written language (and people just wrote what words sounded like), because the factories in Huskvarna has been around since the year 1689.
Love that sort of history , tak.
I have a Huskvarna cast iron pan and sewing machine, and...
Thanks. And now they make robo-mowers!
The look your wife made at the “yuzuless” look!! Haha! But - your content is seriously so wholesome. Love it
The fact an old bicycle had evaded the various clean-up operations cracked me up ^^ Thanks for sharing your work, it's really inspiring!
No japanese style house is complete without a cherryblossom tree 😍
I think when you are able plant one on either side of the start of your driveway it would be a sicht to behold when they get big 😍
(Maby you can propegate the one you allready have, makes a nice memory) .
The jqpanese maple is a slow grower (atleast here is holland it is) we got one too and after 8 years it is now about 1,5 meters high 😅 (it was about 70 cm when we got it).
The "fresh" woodchips??
No prob.
We have done that too and it will decay on the soil eventually and it has worked well for us too.
The advantage is that the chips contain more moisture within so it will help keep the soil from drying out.
Also you can mulch closer to the stem for the same reason just keep it from "burrying" the stem.
It should help your newly planted plants.
Great job !
Looks fantastic!!
A few years and the garden will be spectacular! Would love to see it all when finished and matured. Labor of love to pass down to your children.
I can't tell you how big of a smile I had on my face watching this. The scene where you and your kids were planting trees as well as at the end when everyone had a picnic together brought back so many memories of doing the same with my dad and inviting friends and family over in the summer to all sit and enjoy each others company in the garden.
Thank you so much you have no idea how much this video made my day :)
Thanks for your lovely comment. It's one of the main joys of having a garden.
i feel like a certain someone will look at these videos again in 30 years and cry like a baby.
You, sir, are a very blessed and fortunate man! You have a beautiful house, a beautiful garden, a beautiful family, and you are making all of this happen by the sweat of your own brow (with a little help, of course!). Some people toil all day in a 3-piece suit in an office cubical, but what you are doing is what I call a successful life. A rare example of how hard work truly pays off!
I bet the neighbors are probably slightly annoyed by all the noise from the renovations but glad to see all the junks cleared. Kudos to you for all th ou se determine hard works, your house is looking good.
From the first video of you that CZcams recommend me already 1 year every time new video was uploaded I'm very excited your house seem like a boy who growing up in every video
Thanks!
Those cylinders look like the old chimney tops my mum uses as flower pots also
they kind of remind me of old cigarette outside ashtrays lol though idk why those would be there
yes, definetly a great find!
they can also be used as pedestals for urns or other concrete structures
To be honest, they look more like water drainage pipes. In the US at least, we call them culverts, but most of our small ones like that size are made out of corrugated galvanized steel. Since these aggragate ones likely have no seals, they wouldn't hold pressure, but okay for gravity drain use. It's possible Tokyo Llama might find some in use under the road at the edge of his yard, and these were merely cut-offs from the ends of longer pipes that the old farmer couldn't bear to throw away.
Seeing you planting with your son (in matching flannels 😭😭) is seriously so heartwarming. My fondest memories as a child was helping mom with the garden.
It’s the orange seat on the trousers that made me laugh. Around here hunters wear orange so they’re not shot. You’ve very well defined an area not to shoot.
The yard and garden are looking so beautiful. When the plants mature and flower it will be breathtaking! The tree planting ceremony lifted my heart. So nice to see everyone join in. I look forward to the next installment. You are definitely not “the unskilled laborer”. Loved the expression on Mrs]

Awesome... this house series is epic!
something about the hard work of renovating your own property that youre raising a family in seems so satisfying
I jumped for joy every time you put out another video. I love it so much! Thank you for updating us each time.

Watch out, someone will mistake you for a Canajun!
I thought it was so loving of your friends and family to give you a cherry tree and be a part of the planting ceremony. That is such a wonderful gift because of the beauty it will add to your garden. You are doing a great job in clean up landscaping .You have accomplished a lot in a relatively short period of time. Looking forward to your next video to see what you've done in renovation.✌
It's been fascinating to see how far the place has come from the first few videos. I admire your youthful persistence and energy taking on such a draining but rewarding task that you and your family will appreciate the results of for the rest of your lives. Thanks for sharing the ups and downs of your journey with us all, and continued luck and much happiness to you and your family.
PS: You must be the fastest lawn mower I've ever seen (21:50 ish)
Regarding the "controversy" over using wood chips as mulch....don't worry about it too much.
Chips of wood, buried in the garden, would have the effect of "locking in" the nitrogen in the soil...basically, all the soil's nitrogen would be bound up in the process of breaking down the wood chips.
BUT. Your wood chips are mostly on the surface. This means that they will:
A. Help keep moisture in the soil
B. Help keep the soil from compacting when you walk thru the planting bed.
C. Break down slowly from underneath.
D. Inhibit weed seedlings, but *planted* herbs and such will be fine, as they already have full root systems.
Just (for the most part) avoid stirring alot of chips into planting holes.
A year to sleep; a year to creep; a year to leap. (plantings) Love what you are creating!
I was literally just thinking about yall the other day and wondering how everything is going, and then you update! What wonderful progress yall are making, cant wait to see the house!
My family always gives trees for big life stuff like getting married or buying a house. It's a great way to bring people together. The house and garden progression is amazing!
beauty, jokes, family, productivity - this video has it all. Absolutely mesmerizing to watch. And so much better than doing any oft the work myself.
Need the wife out there on a lawn chair while your doing the landscaping enjoying the fruits of your labor! LOL!
Love it. I'd really like to do something similar with my wife when we return to Japan from NZ. Our local area is just up up from you guys in Ibaraki and there are many older houses like this crying out for a bit of attention.
Thanks, yes there are lots around, especially when you get slightly off the beaten track. Good luck with it!
My family used to live in this house with a huge yard and land. Mum and Dad planted corn, sweet potatoes, and other green leafy veggies. We had chickens, ducks, and goats to take care. Seeing that huuuuge green yard made me miss those good ol' days, even if the upkeep was such a pain. ^_^
Also, kudos for that Dad joke. It is not yuzu-less.
I've been looking for a step through bicycle like that in Canada for awhile. And someone on the other side of the world just tossed it away as trash behind a palm years ago 😵 Awesome improvement with the home and yard. I've been following along for a year now. Keep up the great work
I cant wait to see the finished house renovation😍😍
If we haven't died of old age. ;-)
@@xcalibertrekker6693 🤣
I believe those giant concrete tubes are an old fashion type of tile connector. It's the tile farmers burry in fields to promote even drainage.
Looks like someone answered this question. I had noticed in the "how we bought abandoned house" video at about the 25 minute mark i saw a lot of them on the side of the fields along the irrigation. It kind of makes sense that they were on a property that was sub divided from a farm plot.
FYI: regarding the use of fresh wood mulch around plants is that the decomposition process reduces the nitrogen level in the upper layers of soil, which plants need. If using fresh wood chips or straw, be sure to use a fertilizer that supplies extra nitrogen which can offset the nitrogen from the soil.
"Yuzu-less for us" I've laughted so hard on this one :D Your garden is looking more and more beautiful with each month, I'm sure you won't regret planting that Japanese maple either. :)
It's so nice seeing progress, especially in a yard. Something about plants and gardens taking shape seems to just take all the stress away.
Also, now that the scaffolding is down, I can't wait to see some close ups of the refinished woodwork.
You've turned a broken down unlivable building in to a lovely and thriving home! I can't wait to see the progress on the house, if its anything like the yard & garden it will be lovely!
The gift of a cherry blossum tree is so wonderful.
Just stumbled upon your channel this morning and have been binge watching on and off throughout the day, what a perfect way to spend a Sunday! I grew up on a farm in the Upper Midwest United States, and I’ve worked construction building houses. Now I make furniture and I’ve especially enjoyed seeing the traditional house framing and the carpenters at work. Always a joy seeing how what I do is done by others in other countries. Keep up the good work, it’s looking great!

Hi Jaya, I promise that I want to congratulate you and your family for having a nice house that will make a beautiful family home. Thank you for showing us day by day the restoration of your house and teaching us through your videos, the customs of the Japanese people. I have seen all your videos since yesterday and I loved every space in the house. I am a lover of the culture of Japan and its people. I hope someday to know that beautiful country and with the dream of living there. Of course with my 53 years sometimes it becomes difficult but not impossible. It only remains for me to congratulate you again and follow you on this beautiful adventure.

Love the video's... A quick rule of thumb on all tree's is they should be spaced as far apart as the mature specimen will grow, With Semi-Dwarf fruit trees about 5-meters apart so they are not competing with one another for soil, water, or nutrients. Also the Chery tree your friends planted needs to have the burlap cutaway, or the root ball will be come bound and the tree die.
What a transformation you've achieved since the start of the project! Well done. Look forward to the house update.
Thank you!
I can't even begin to imagine the hard graft, forbearance and careful thought that's gone into the house and the garden. Hats off to you sir! But when do we get to see the chickens?
Good question. I'm thinking of an alternative location for the coop.
@@TokyoLlama i think near the compost will be perfect
I use fresh wood chips around my garden for 50 years. My grandmother used it in her garden also. Her thinking was as the chips turn and break down they feed the plants. In the act of breaking down heat is emitted keeping the roots of the plants warm thru winter.
You just can’t SMOTHER a plants with heaps of unseasoned bark chips, that’s what the fuss is about.

Greetings from Sydney. My wife is Japanese so I have spent a lot of time in Japan. I enjoy watching your videos. They accurately reflect what being in Japan is really like and they make me miss it.
It is great to see what you are doing to that wonderful house. Your commentary is great: it has a good balance between speaking what can usefully be said and letting the picture do the rest. Your whole approach seems to me to be highly respectful of the Japanese cultural setting while bringing some of the best thinking from Australia. You try things and are very honest about what works out as planned and what doesn't. You are steadily getting better at putting the videos together too.
You have earned our respect and admiration.

What my grand used to do with wood shavings! If you save the wood coming from the chopper and dry it and save used kitchen grease with left over candle stubs. My grand would make small balls to start her wood burning! She would allow the chips of wood to dry, then melting the wax and adding the kitchen grease to form golf size balls, all in the shed of course! As well show would use loose chips in small paper bags with twigs,. She always worked to use everything to its smallest amount! All the ask was used throughout the garden also!
