    The mind is a powerful thing and it can play tricks on you. I've golfed for 30 years, or so, and it's always been very easy for me to join a group of people, that I didn't know, and play alongside. Never felt apprehensive or intimidated no matter how good or bad they were. I've made a lot of friends that way. After about 10 years of playing, my friend asked me to play in a tournament, my very first, with him. I thought it would be fun. I was probably middle of the road, skill wise, when it came to the players that entered and felt excited to play. When I got up to that first tee, my nerves kicked in for some reason and I started sweating, profusely, and started to get tunnel vision. Even though it was summertime, I instantly got cold and clammy. It was so bad that I had a hard time just putting my tee into the ground and my ball on the tee. My body started to go numb and I thought I was going to pass out. I took a few steps back, took a few deep breathes, and then went to hit my tee shot. When I was standing over my ball, I was positive that I wasn't going to even make contact. It probably took me about a minute to finally swing but it felt like I was standing there for 20 minutes. I don't really remember playing the first 3 holes but after that I calmed down and things went well. I think my friend and I placed 7th out of 36 teams. It was almost as if someone had flipped my brains power switch OFF and everything shut down. I've never felt like that before, or after, that tournament.

      Yeah, it's crazy how it just happens - and I was totally unprepared for this time! I think I just suddenly found myself out of my usual comfort zone, started overthinking the situation and just lost my concentration. Certainly taught me to be better prepared for a gig like this. And to never play the bass again, lol!

    I'm primarily a bass player. I think guitarists and keyboard players if they're confused they can figure they're in G or what ever and just jam a bit. But when you play bass you really have to know the arrangement; that it is the pressure of it🤣. I'm glad you didn't freeze to death🤣. Thanks for the story! In the end all you can do is Rock On! 👍👍

      Yeah and what I found was that unlike a guitar, you can't just play a big chord with distortion and leave it ringing for 4 barres - you actually need to keep playing!

    Oh man, Dunsy! That was a rough gig for sure. I recall a few back in the day where everything just went wrong.
    Thanks for sharing this experience. 👍

    I'm the " Rab" referred to in the video, I don't remember it being as bad as Dunsy makes it out to be ( although I'm not going to argue from his perspective 🤣). He stepped up to the plate and helped us out at the time, miles from anywhere, and indeed " baltic" 🤣 . I think these experiences are referred to as " character building" 🤣

    • @DunsysGuitarWorld
      @DunsysGuitarWorld  Před rokem

      Most definitely "Character Building" - I now only travel to gigs while wearing thermal underwear just in case!

    I have a ' Worst Gig Experience ' ever too , and it was worse than The Excorcist and The Flu put together. Times ten . The next day no one in the band would speak to me , either at the hotel or on the plane back. It truly was a nightmare.

    Given my prowess in front of an audience I would class that as my best ever gig! 😂. It’s all relative, Dunsy. Great story.

    I used to play bass frequently. And that sounds like an absolutely nightmare of a gig. Especially after rehearsing. Then, forgetting everything right at the time of gigging. I have done that before myself, so I know how that can be a huge confidence killer. That's why I prefer to stick to guitar. It's what I do best. But there have been times I've forgotten stuff on guutar right before playing.

    Worst gig I ever did was a rough pub up in the South Wales valley... some young gentlemen freshly pumped up on their steroids came in claiming one and others girlfriends, and it promptly kicked off into a full scale bar brawl. Chairs being thrown, windows smashed, pint glasses flying,, the whole lot... Thankfully I had my stratocaster, which is pretty handy in a fight, although it did managed to pick up a few blood stains (not mine) and the neck came away from the socket. Didn't even get paid... Some guy did offer me a bump of cocaine off his front door key as an apology though.

    Always good to wake up with Dunsy … that sounds so wrong 🤣 What I mean is a new video from Dunsy’s Guitar World is a great way to start the day! I hope that’s clarified things. Anyway, always entertaining and even educational - I did not know the derivation of the term “bottle” until today … Mind you, it’s concerning that you’re still haunted by the memory of that gig - I do hope sharing your pain with the world has been therapeutic - could I suggest buying a used guitar from Japan might help take your mind off it? 👍

    • @DunsysGuitarWorld
      @DunsysGuitarWorld  Před rokem +1

      I remember the gig as a warning to take things a wee bit more seriously, lol! Not just "aye, this'll be fine". And Dave and I are still together - in a band - these days, so he doesn't think I'm rubbish (hopefully). Funny you should mention another guitar from Japan. I don't know how it happened but I got a message only yesterday from Zenmarket saying "Your item has reached out warehouse". Uh oh. You'll get a surprise when you see this one, likely in September. A rare modern(ish) Edwards recreation of a 70's Gibson, that really wasn't very good.

    You're not worth your salt if you haven't weathered at least a few gigs from Hell. Back when I was a drinker, I'd get the worst bouts of dehydration. More than once during a 3 set gig of around 12-15 songs per set, my arm muscles would tense up on me to the point where I could barely move my fingers. It friggin' sucked! Luckily I could play at being a quarter note Charlie and single note it for a few songs until the break. This usually happened during the first set. There's also something to be said for warming up as well.

    • @DunsysGuitarWorld
      @DunsysGuitarWorld  Před rokem +1

      There's a lot to be said for busting out some rock and roll moves to cover any playing inadequacies, a hand in the air is worth 2 poorly performing ones on the guitar, lol! Yeah, happens to us all at some point, but ya gotsta keep going, no point chucking it over one totally awful gig - I could have froze to death in a Ford Mondeo after that one, what a legacy to leave.
