. Guy on a buffalo, or two guys on a buffalo... Stephen and I head to Catalina Island in Southern California for a day of flying, $100 hamburgers, beautiful sites, and just a really cool excuse to commit aviation.
Stephen is time building in his Cessna 150, preparing to be a commercial pilot. Right now he's just a private pilot without instrument, but he's really close to achieving both as he works on his aviation career.
We start in Camarillo, CA at the Waypoint Cafe. I was hanging out there when his instructor saw me on my Instagram story. Then one thing lead to another, and we ended up going flying together.
It's always great to meet a new flying friend and head up. We went south past Point Magu and saw some traffic really close. They didn't have ADS-B on ForeFlight, so they were hard to see. But, it all worked out just fine.
Then we made our water crossing which is always something you need to be careful to consider for aviation safety. Flying over water can be hazardous if the correct preparations aren't made. But we had life preservers and got a bit higher.
Stephen told me about a recent shark encounter that someone had, where the shark bit their kayak and embedded its teeth. Pretty crazy!
Then we landed the airplane at Catalina Island in the traffic pattern. I did sterile cockpit so Stephen could concentrate. Let's just say his landing was... successful. We made it down in one piece ;D
This airport is quite challenging, being on top of the mountain, and on a slope. It means you get a lot of wind moving around, making for a very dynamic and active landing sequence. In all fairness, I just wanted to point out that it is a challenging place to land an airplane.
Catalina Island is a conservatory and kept very wild. There are even wild buffalo on the island. And yes, we did have a buffalo burger. And it was amazing.
After seeing the sights on the island, we took off and flew around the rest of the island, taking in the sights. With an airplane we can circumnavigate pretty easy. The water is bright blue, with big crashing waves. It's a really impressive flight.
I bet Stephen $10 that he couldn't see buffalo before me... and lost. We saw buffalo from the airplane! Very cool.
Later I said my debt was null and void if I could land the airplane really smoothly. But, I didn't. Even this CFI couldn't do it... Oh well.
Had a blast, and I hope you enjoyed it as well!

What makes your videos really appealing, and a real pleasure to watch, is that they don't profess to "know it all" but rather share truthfully and practically the joys and challenges of flying with an unscripted narration which is genuine and sincere. Thank you for your efforts and great videos. My adage is everyone can fly but everyone shouldn't fly. In your case you were born to fly.

Also as a commercial pilot who goes there all the time i can attest to the various wind shear that can occur at Catalina and make the landing "interesting." It's definitely a place where you have to have good go around judgement.

Great video! Been there once. Loved those buffalo burgers 🍔. A must flight if you are in so cal. Can’t wait to go back and tru the new runway. Also FYI was an OS is the navy and all navy vessels should be monitoring guard 121.5 so if you do have engine troubles in the channel and you see a navy ship (which you probably will because I feel like we were always cruising in there) I would head for them. You should be able to communicate with them on your way down. They are also required to have a rescue swimmer on board which would be nice if you go down in the water.

That second landing was fine. 😂. I came here specifically to see the multiple Guy on a Buffalo references…. So, on my first cross country last week, (in a Cessna 150!) we were going into a class D and they asked me to report a 5 mile right base… so, (because I watch you) I clarified… and was told to make a right base for a 5 mile final… which seemed nuts because that took me right over a University Campus… we did it. When we were fueling up, the local flight club guy said they do that so you get used to flying a long final in case they put you in line with the commercial or private jet traffic. To which my CFI asked, “how do they expect a 150 to stay out in front of a jet?”… 😂. The local guy said he’s asked them that and they just shrug. 🤷🏽

Since I am attempting to be the most prepared student ever when I begin my training, I have been practicing that in my car.... Aviation is neat in the fact that you end up in the cockpit with people you have just met. However, even when trying to make a good impression, you need to speak up when you don't like something the other person is doing in the cockpit. It's definitely uncomfortable but a lot less uncomfortable than having a pilot error accident.

What a cool adventure!!! Who would take a boat if you have a plane and love to fly!!! That controller “3 mile base” was misleading, I interpreted it as enter a 3 mile base as well, not 3 mile final... odd way to control. I think a enter left base for 3 mile final would of cleared it up.

I dunno man, I’m not sure if I’d feel comfy being 15-20 miles from land in that old 150 if I had a choice, that water’s cold. Why not fly over LAX airspace and then take the shorter crossing by Long Beach? And also why not be on flight following just in case of emergency? It’s free. Just seems like it would be much better ADM and risk management.

    • @culcune

I am not an aviator, but used to live in the San Fernando Valley; there is a LOT of air traffic if they were to do what you suggest. Lots of low-lying mountains, including just north of Camarillo. Lots of urban area all the way to Long Beach, where there is lots of air traffic from the several airports one would cross. Van Nuys and Burbank, Santa Monica, LAX, just to name a few. Just knowing the area, the risks are better just heading out to sea from this particular airport in my opinion, and like I said, that is just from common sense point of view, not as an aviator in any capacity.

@@culcune it’s actually a really common published route over LAX, I’ve done it several times. There’s actually several published VFR routes. Love this video! Been laughing my butt off about 'guy on a Buffalow . . ohhhhhh'
On a serious note, controller said "enter a 3 mile left base for 26" 24:01
I think I would have understood to continue my heading until 3 miles out to a point of the commencement of the turn to left base leg, made my turn and proceeded. But, who knows what I would have done because I don't have the visuals you guys did. And then there's the 'instructional' reprimand by Tower 24:51 with your sound of surprised disdain and concerned looks. Love that!
But could controller working Tower have been more clear? Still not sure what he meant as I sit here contemplating. I thought you made your turn 3 miles out and were following landing traffic ahead when, thus already covering 1.5 miles prior to the admonishment "That's not a 3 mile left base, that's a 1 and half mile left base by the way"
Would like to hear your thoughts again and perhaps see something more on this from you as a topic if you feel so inclined. : )
