The Nikon Z9 mirrorless camera is Nikon's current flagship and it captures amazing video with an even more amazing AF tracking system. The Nikon D5 on the other hand is one of Nikon's top DSLR's that was ever produced and it records video but how well does it stack up with the current competition from Nikon when recording side by side. Let us find out.
We all know Nikon was behind DSLR video because of AF when capturing video in 2016. In this video I tell you why this was a bad thing at the time but a great thing for Nikon in 2024 and it helped Nikon WAKE UP and shake up the industry buying RED CINEMA.

Very cool video auto=tracking between the Nikno D5 and the Z9 cameras. The D5 seem to be still a great camera for images and some videos. Great video Vahagn.

Great content, as always. I’d be intrigued to know why the image quality and look one gets from some of the old DSLRs is SO damn good. Were the sensors better? Different? Or something else outside the sensor itself, in the electronics supporting the sensor? I thought the D5 colour rendition and dynamic range were actually better than the Z9 in the clips you showed us!

There some really good deals out there. Specially on used lenses. If yo have extra cash laying around its a buyers market.

What bag do you use for the z9? I'm struggling to find a bag that isn't huge but can still take the Z9.
I use a THINK TANK backpack, Its an older one but it does the trick, its in allot of my wedding on location videos on this channel.

The D5 has better skin tones as well as also a truer white point for the brain areas. Assuming all the settings are the same like you said yes the focus might not be quite as good as the nine but looking at it on a calibrated monitor I like the D5 more. Plus when you shoot at 1.4 versus 2.8 it’s a big difference and a heavier toll on the auto focus to get it right. I honestly think the D5 is pulling way above this weight class as a video camera here in this video. Put a 1.4 on the Z9 and put a 1.4 on the D5 and you’ll see is not that much better. This is where the canon flagships and their auto focus and Sony flagship and they’re auto focus is simply dead on from an auto focus perspective.
That D5 has amazing AWB man. I was amazed. No more green tint out of the box.
Its quite clear that the D5 isnt as capable as the Z8/Z9 when it comes to filming. This is also filmed at 1080, and the z8/z9 can do 8k. And also, the N-log capabilities of the z8/z9 just add another dimension when it comes to color grading! Yeah the D5 is actually doing very well, and it might be even better if run on manual focus since the AF isnt able to handle detection as well.

The Z9 color rendering seems richer. The 105 1.4 is still a honey dripper lens and works well on my Z9. The firmware updates on the Z9 keep improving the camera with more to come no doubt. Thanks Vahagn!
