- To get the best video out of your Nikon Z8 and Z9, here are some settings to update right away. Nikon Z8 and Z9 is now the best hybrid camera at it's price range. It can film in Nikon Raw and Prores Raw. It has one of the best autofocus and stabilization. Best part? The color in the nikon is one of my favorite ever. Nikon color in there photos was already at the top and now it's been transferred to it's video.

Great video. Right to the point and the perfect jump start for new Z8 and Z9 users. Just picked up the Z8 myself as I look for a hybrid camera to pivot to from my BMPCs. Looking forward to the auto-focus of course, internal stabilization, increased resolution, and ability to take high-res stills. Hopefully the low light performance can hold its own.

Just picked up the z8 this week. Your tips are great, the audio one mega, be filming an interview so that was super useful. To get the Max image quality move the selector over Nraw then press tone mapping it gives you a wider color space option. Really need Apple to make an 8k HDR screen next. Exciting time for Nikon buying RED. Super impressed with the Z8, fantastic video, stunning photos. Kick ass hybrid camera

That’s the great thing about it z8. It’s the best photo camera overall ever and then it’s also one of the best video camera ever. Definitely have fun with it.

One thing about working with N-Log in Premiere is, if you’re not going to use a transform LUT that’s designed for N-Log then you need to override the media color space on each clip to Rec. 2020. This ensures you will get correct colors on a Rec. 709 timeline. From there you can apply your curves and contrast. Thanks again for the video!
Thank you so much for sharing the tip to change it to red 2020. That’s crazy how premiere doesn’t do that automatically. I’m sure they’ll eventually have to fix that right.
I think eventually they’ll add into the “Auto Detect Log Color Space” selections, of course that will still be something you have to turn on but at least it won’t be per clip. I usually use a transform LUT on an adjustment layer which is easiest for me.

It's worth mentioning that selecting DX also gets rid of the dark corners if you have a nice APS-C (DX) lens that you want to use.

Very helpful, thank you so much! This is probably a very silly question, but in which mode do you recommend shooting film. With my photography I am doing everything manual
I recommend shooting in manual mode also. Every other mode is automatic mode, very similar to photography. So when you’re not in manual mode and you pan your camera from shaded area to bright, it automatically adjust the setting and you see it changing. This is ok for parties and videos that not as important to be perfect. You don’t want to see it changing setting.

Great video Myong! Extremely helpful and very well explained. Does the image quality gets affected while recording the video in DX crop mode at 4k 60fps on Z8? I'm planning to buy a 16mm lens and using it like a 24mm in crop mod for some wide angle shots. Your views and suggestions would be helpful. Thank you!
Visually it won’t get affected. Technically it’s using less sensor so it’s less quality then full frame but it’s shown in CZcams and iPad and those screens can’t see the difference. I even use a smaller sensor, micro43, but video quality is amazing.

Thanks for the video. I'm using the 12bit SDR but I was wondering if N-log or HLG is any better.
What are you using the SDR for? My guess is that when transmitting video from camera to anything, standard h264 or h265 colored is good. Nlog is only so you can color it after in post and HLG is only great is going straight to HDR TVs.

What settings are best for auto focus for video when using a gimbal?
For Gimble, you definitely want your nikon to be in its full time auto focus mode on full screen. I have never missed a spot with my nikon in focusing while using my gimbal. If you stand still and try auto focus, there are times where it will try to focus on something that you don’t want, but I can be understood, especially when there’s a lot of things in the background. While you’re on a gamble and you move, your camera catches on what you are trying to focus then it finds its mark

I have Z6 II I didn't start taking video with it but I'm little bit afraid about the focusing problem that people always talking about also there's no N-log for nikon z6 II so do you recommend anything about settings? Also I've been thinking to move to sony again but I really love Nikon and I don't really know what should I do with 35mm Z and 85mm Z, Thank you in advance !
Nikon Z6’s and Z7’s have blog only if you use an external recorder like Atomos V. If you’re not that can’t use log. If you’re not 100 percent comfortable with editing log then you should avoid it. I film in natural most of the time for my video gigs. I also have the nikon z6 and even though it’s one of the better focus system I ever experienced it’s still not perfect so you have to be ready to tap to focus or have backup incase it starts to focus on something you don’t want it to.

Question, I have shoot video with my z8 in low light and event if I didn't have any lines on my camera screen, it turn out that the full image is filled with paralle black lines. Any idea why?
If you film in ballrooms like for wedding or events, there LED cheap lights to light decorate the place. Those LED flickers! You have to bring your shutter to only 60 if you’re filming in 24fps and 120 shutter if you’re filming in 60fps. This will stop the flicker of those likes and not have those lines. Hope you understood this. Good luck!
@@CameraToFreedom that wasn't the case but, as it was the first time I shoot video with an hybrid I found out the rule I didn't know: time=2*fps. I did this and the problem was fixed.

So I have watched a few of your videos on the Z9 and I have followed some of the setting changes and they have helped . I do have a question on the video settings , So for some reason when I shoot in pro rs or anything that saves as a .mov file the files will only play audio on my computer not that big of a deal since I like to shoot in 4K raw. My question is the camera saves 2 files : one .nev and one .mpeg , Is there a way to set it up to only save the .nev
Hey Tony, thank you so much for writing to me on the comment section since it does help with my video. So this is an easy answer and sorry I didn’t tell you at the email. Nikon has to save the AP video when you’re shooting in raw video so that he can replay in your camera, ironically, our nikon cannot replay raw videos on that tiny screen. It also serves as proxy video so when you previewing the video on your computer, you can edit using that smaller video file and when you export it, it will export using the raw video file.

Can you cover the color settings for video in the Z8? I use the 8k and the colors are not right when played back.
What color profile are you using in your camera? What editing program are you using? Do you mean playback in your camera or playback when you transfer the files into your computer. There’s a lot of things we have to know for understanding the problem.
@@CameraToFreedom Do you mean rgb or adobe? If so i use rgb. It is when i play them back on my PC. I am finding I need to edit the video through an editing software to get the right colors. I was thinking i should get better color right from the card.
I am also finding it depends on which video player I use. The color is darker on VLC.
When using focus peaking...once it is at the focus you want....how do you remove the color so you can see the image again?
Put the focus pic in your quick menu where the I button is. Find your focus, then going to the i menu then turn it off. Personally, I just get used to it and if you start feeling comfortable, then you could just not even use it personally have an external monitor during most of my video shoots and I used the monitor focus so that my screen on the camera doesn’t have to. Now that you mentioned it, I was filming at Coachella all day yesterday and I didn’t think twice about it, but I just realize that my focus will turn on for its will go away when it finds this Mark. But it would be amazing if our nikon did that on purpose so I’m actually going to look more into it.

All cameras at this level should be able to have the mic input be selectable between mic level and line level audio. My Fuji X-S10 and other Fujis have this. Why don't they all do it for the best possible audio?

What you said should make sense and I wish that’s how it was but if you have a VR lens, you don’t get to use the in body VR. However, the electronic VR works no matter what, but that’s only for tripod style mode where you don’t move at all. Electronic VR, if you try to move with it like panning, then it distort the video, so be sure to use electronic VR for tripod mode.

While I have have many Nikkor lenses with VR, I have moved to mirrorless (Z8, Z6ii) along with investment in Z lenses s and most of them do not have a VR knob on the lens; I assume that the in body VR will take over. So maybe it's more applicable to F lenses that maybe placed on a mirrorless camera with the FTZ adaptor.@@CameraToFreedom

Hi Myong, hope you are doing well, I have been trying to do video with my Nikons lol, but there is one thing I don't understand and wanted to see if you could please help. I have mines in AF-F in video mode and my question is, do I have to leave the AF-ON button pressed at all times or does it focus and track the eyes/head of the subject by itself without me having to leave the AF-ON button pressed at all times. I'm loset, lol...I press that button to focus as UI do when I take photos but I lose focus so I have tried leaving the AF-ON button pressed but I still lose the subject, I'm not super sure what I am doing wrong lol.... If you could please help, I would really appreciate it, thank you.
I need to make a video on video focus! Thanks for reminding me. O you don’t have to press down the AF-ON button. Once you hit record it will auto focus automatically. I leave mine on AF-f especially when I’m on my gimbal and I need my nikon to do all the focusing. It does an amazing job!

Thanks for this video. Great advices. Some questions if you can. I was always into photography, now trying to get some videos. Had d750, d850, +24/70, 70/200... but since came out last may, the z8, and waiting almost 8 months for the 400 2.8 z lens, great pictures and quality. Sorry my ignorance but trying to record, after 7 seconds, stops. If i try n raw or pro res raw does'nt evet let me record not even a second... have a 128 gb sd card, can be that?
Yes, it’s because of your 128 GB SD card. You need fast cards and 514 GB SD cards minimum. When I shoot in raw with my other cameras I use terabyte cards and terabyte SSD drives. Like I mentioned, you want to use them for high budget projects and you’re willing to spend thousands of dollars on cards and external drives to be constantly backing them up. If you are shooting for your small business or for your CZcams page, then you want to stick to just 4K non-raw video files. There is no way of getting around the massive video size that raw video produces. Some cameras like the Hollywood level, cameras will fill up a terabyte a few seconds. I also had the D7 50 and bunch of DSLR’s in the past and you will absolutely love any of the Z cameras. To me the Nikon Z8 and Zen nine is the best camera you can get right now. Sony does have a $6000 camera that’s pretty amazing that shoots in global shutter but you got a love nikon for being the best photo camera and now can shoot raw video. Sony mirror cameras cannot shoot raw videos.
Like the audio tips and will look into them for my Z8. I do have to say the video though does look like it was focusing on the wrong part of you or were using a low f-stop. What did you use to record this and if the Z8/Z9 did you use snap bridge to make sure you were focused on the eye prior to pressing record because the non swiveling screen? And yes I know YT does compression but just pointing it out. The audio is great btw

New mirrorless cameras have that curtain shutter brotha (shield) like my Sony A7IV however many don't recommend using it. If you do a search, many fail in just a few months. It can easily fail in the long run. Kudos to Nikon tho for fighting Red in terms of internal RAW recording. BMs RAW is not real RAW, that's why they can record internally.

@@CameraToFreedom Yeah was excited to have the feature on camera as well but it's a common issue not really meant to use for changing lenses LOL! Yes, if you search BRAW is not real raw, ProRes RAW is real raw. NRAW is real raw, not BRAW lol. No I don't use blackmagic, never owned one. I'm rocking the Sony FX3 and Z CAM S6 and F6-Pro. Miss you too man!

Hmm once you turn the auto off then you should be able to manually set your iso. Make sure you’re in Manual mode on your dial.

But N-Raw have color space limitation to Rec.2020 which is very sad. I love Nikon Z8 but i might wait for Nikon to release next Generation.

Sony have Slog3 Log profile & S.Gamut3.cine Color Gamut.
Panasonic have V-Log Profile & V-Gamut Color.
Canon have Clog2 profile & Canon Wide gamut.
All of those companies have their own gamut color space which is far wider than Rec.2020.
I think for neutural colorgrading, Nikon Z8 Rec.2020 is enough, but for heavy Colorgrading I think it will be a problem.

Honestly, if you cst in resolve the nlog to vgamut / vlog and export to rec709 g2.4 the colors are very good. Colorscience of Nikon is pro level, i just think their log curve needs some work (highlight recovery is tricky) and i would love to see a less digital image.
Rec2020 has a wider color gamut than rec709. It's good
raw does not have a color gamut, you need to research it more more asking questions. it's just meta data, and even still rec2020 is more than enough for 12bit linear raw. I bet your monitor does not even come close to that😢

That’s the craziest camera news ever! Nikon bought red Eggs I wonder if anything is going to change. I wonder if nikon is going to be more lenient and let other companies create raw, but I doubt it since they could still make more money by keeping it strict, but maybe they are into morals instead of money but that sentence sounds ridiculous for big corporate companies. Either way, I think that they are going to grow as a team instead of as rivals can you imagine a red camera that can take photos or even a Nikon cinema camera! Such an amazing and interesting event

It’s happening. This camera has that power to keep up with likes of Red Komodo, Canon C70. It’ll be popular with its smaller size for more mobile shots while still getting 8k raw videos.
This shouldn't surprise you Canon 5D mark II cameras were even used on pretty high production music videos. A million dollars isn't what it used to be and I imagine many music videos can hit that mark pretty quickly nowadays.
8 bit is great for you? That makes you sound clueless. I’m not even happy with 10. 12 bit minimal. You have a Komodo and thats 16 bit. Why would you even talk about eight bit? if anything stear your followers away from that.
