Instead of thinking I am decluttering my whole house, I think about one drawer, one cabinet, one closet at a time.

It took four months of being focused to get the clutter under control. I'm not a minimalist, but I am no longer embarrassed. My home is ready for friends and family any day because the mess is gone.

One of my mistakes is decluttering and then leaving the pile in plain sight. Then little eyes see it and protest! So I recommend black garbage bags or cardboard boxes. And then move it into your vehicle so it goes to it’s next home more fluidly! Funny how if you never mention it how sometimes they never ask for that item again! But the threat of goodwill makes them want them LOL

Lol I remember those days! I used to hide toys in the garage and then pull them out 6 months later - brand new toy!! Lol orrrr if they barely played with it then I knew it was buh-bye to goodwill 😎😂👏🏻♥️

Yes, you need to change your spending/shopping habits or else you will be decluttering once again! I've decluttered before I moved in 2014 but have decluttered several more times since then. The more you declutter the more you want to get rid of and have a simpler life. It's kind of like a high.

Those empty spaces are a sense of freedom!!! Been on my minimalist journey 2 years.... Love that feeling of having empty clean spaces!!!That is motivation within itself!! We realize that life can go on without those items.
    All great info!! Thank you.

I still keep items for my fantasy self, or the what ifs, and also the “if I loose 5lbs, need to put all these items in a box and choose a date to decluttered these. Lesley England x

Our entire house is 600 sq feet and so I was able to do my initial declutter in about 5 days. From there, I halted the flow of items into my home, which made a huge difference! I then have moved more slowly and focused on organizing what I owned and making sure everything had a home. I am now 4 years in and each weekend I pick 1 area of my home (1 drawer, 1 closet, one rack, one tub) and review what is in it and remove anything I am not using. For me, this is just maintenance....
Edited to add: I am a minimalist and have very little furniture/storage, so that makes the process easier.

I’m doing this because I’m embarrassed at everything I have collected over the years. We are renting this house, so we will move eventually. I don’t want a huge amount of useless stuff to move. It’s easier to clean, now. I’m still working on my garage. I’m out of school in two weeks, so I’ll have more time to dedicate to finishing.

To go along with the having a plan, I think one of the other mistakes people make (myself included at first) is not knowing your preferred style. It isn't going to be 'one size fits all' and knowing what your taste is. I mean neutrals or colorful, streamlimed or cozy, classic or trendy.

I strongly suggest decluttering within your own home before offering things to others in the family; grandma's doily, grandpa's unused tools,, and so on. Otherwise it can easily become rolling clutter.. yes, things left your home, but lots came back in as the whole family began decluttering!

Start with your stuff. Hubs has the smallest bedroom in the house to himself for his junk. It drove me insane, but I got my junk, kids stuff, and shared stuff under control. Now, I don't mind the messy room upstairs or the stuff in the entertainment center. Starting with my stuff built my skills and confidence. A few of the precious extras are stored in a tote in the basement to make Hubs happy, but I found peace without tossing any of his stuff.

    • @inashamsia
      @inashamsia Před 3 lety

Agreed. Give hubby his own space to stuff his stuff and if you find his stuff around the house you will know where to place them, at the same time he knows where to find them. My husband has his half of the closet, his tools, and his studio, but the rest of the house is open season 😂

I'm on the same note. My husband is a hoarder for sentimental items. He just can't let go. We have a room and attic full of his stuff. He did join me slowly to declutter a bunch of items in the house. Now, I'm convincing him to do the same in attic, he is not as rigid, it will take time to get to a empty attic state.

Or try to declutter a bit at a time and only keep what you will look through or refer back to. Buy nice photo albums or picture boxes to keep them in to enjoy pictures properly.
I'm in the process of decluttering three boxes of my kids drawings so I've bought folders and only keeping a section from each age so I or they can look at them. Better then three boxes stuffed in my loft never to be looked at again.

@@FancyThatwithCandice you apparently did not or cannot read the comment; never was it stated that YOU had bad neighbors. I stated that MY neighbors are ones I would never want to borrow from [as they are criminals and proud of it]. And as for being so presumptuous as to have others -- family and friends -- be available to meet your needs at your convenience and their inconvenience of being your personal supply house, then you are the one who is very rude. Asking to borrow a crockpot is NOT an emergency where you would rush over to ask a serious favor to save your child's life to drive to the E.R. instead of wait for an ambulance. Remember the wise line: Polonius counsels his son Laertes before he embarks on his visit to Paris. He says, “Neither a borrower nor a lender be; for loan oft loses both itself and friend.”
