Hi, my name is Professor Alex Silver!
Every Sunday, I release a new episode focusing on a unique character from the Pokemon anime. Each class focuses on the character's narrative arc, including all of their battles, storylines & character development. Still curious why the writers kept it as a Combuskin for so long despite how popular Blazekin is
I'm curious about a lot of things like that when it comes to Pokemon ha
I always assumed Torchic's evolution pattern mimicked May's own development. When a Torchic, May was new, inexperienced and struggling
He evolved into Combusken around the time she was getting confident and powerful in her own right.
Then evolved in Blaziken after making a mature and grown up decision, showing her own evolution as a person, ready to set out and take the world on herself.
My guess for a lot of Pokémon not evolving is there easier to draw/animate then there fully evolved form which are usually more complex and more to them. There is also the inherit cuteness factor that the smaller Pokémon bring and are more marketable and can make toys out of.
You will notice once the show moved I’m guessing to new animation techniques and probably went digital not having to draw/animate nearly as much as they did that ash’s team starting to fill out with more detailed Pokémon then the earlier season (bulbasaur pikachu butterfree squrtle charzard vs gligar dragonite greninja etc) earlier seasons did have evolutions of course but it usually was just one or maybe 2 of his Pokémon near the end of season and then didn’t use them again.
Combusken has a less aggressive design that fits better with may. Blaziken is also established as being a really strong pokemon with the last trainer to have used one being harrison who beat ash in johto so they didnt want to give such a powerhouse to may whos a less experienced trainer so they saved it until literal the last battle.
Combusken suits her more considering how May developpement was done
A blaziken would have been too much for her in the middle of her journey
I still remember seeing the Sceptile vs. Blaziken contest battle when it was still new, when the Diamond and Pearl series was just on the horizon. Crazy that was around 15 years ago, time flies by.

May's Blaziken is a legend in its own way if it were too shown up during its return w/May in XY evolving into Mega Blaziken!

Ironically one of the oddest battles in the anime is still a favorite of mine; the contest battle between Sceptile and Blaziken. I remember how weird it was when Brock, Max and Ash despite having seen dozens of contests by that point in the series were confused when Ash was losing points when Sceptile's attacks were being dodged by Blaziken 😂 Heck, not to mention it felt like 10 minutes passed before May even bothered giving her fried chicken a command in battle!
Haha that line from Ash was ridiculous. There was some very sketch writing in the Hoenn and Battle Frontier era
@@ProfessorAlexSilver Nah my favorite "Dumb-ash line" from that saga was when Charizard went for Seismic Toss on Brandon's Dusclops and Ash went "OH NO, I FORGOT!" when it came to Fighting moves not working on Ghost types HAHAHAHA

Blaziken: Serious & Powerful!
If Blaziken went mad w/too power too much then would've become barbarous & monstrous!

Mays Blaziken is insane. Powerful Pokémon and the battle against drew is legendary! Very impressed with its power!

I feel like May had a team that could have actually rivaled Ash's has she battled Ash in Sinnoh. Most of Ash's female companions usually have overall weak teams with one or two really strong Pokémon but as we see from her in Sinnoh May now has some real powerhouses on her team that are actually evolved. Also she actually had more than 6 Pokémon unlike some of his companions like Iris and Serena.
It was very definitely much more impressive than many other companions :)

The one way I'll keep on remember about May's Blaziken is its time when it had its battle in the finals against Ash's Sceptile which packed the heat between those 2!
That was one of Sceptile’s coolest fights 😎
As a kid I really never thought it would go past combusken but it really came through for may over and over again
Johto really lowered the expectations on Hoenn starters for me lol
I can imagine honestly the johto starters felt under developed in to story.
The battle between Blaziken and Sceptile has stuck with me my whole childhood. Especially since they shared the ribbon

Thanks a lot for doing this! You forgot to mention one thing. When it was a torchik it used to see may and beautifly train together and it thought that may didnt like him anymore it got sad/jealous.
I mentioned it very briefly near the start :)
Blaziken really showed how much May has grown. After seeing Harrison’s Blaziken beat Charizard, I hoped torchic would eventually show just as much promise, and I was so right. I just wish combusken had evolved sooner then right before May’s departure. I feel like many opponents combusken struggled with would have been significantly easier had it been in its final form. Maybe it could have won her the whole kanto grand festival. I also wish we could see what Blaziken has accomplished since achieving it much coveted final form.
Definitely fun to see them grow together :)
It would be neat if May returned and was shown to have her blaziken mega evolve, thus further showing their bond. Also, her rival Drew could possibly be someone new to cover.
I've been waiting years for that haha

I loved Mays Blaziken
It started from a weak Torchic to a badass and strong Blaziken. Blaziken also had cools moves like overheat or sky uppercut and even fire spin

See, even though Blaziken's my least favourite Hoenn starter, it still ranks highly among my favourites overall. Just goes to show how good Hoenn's starters were.

The hoenn starters are all amazing. Like my least favorite starter from Hoenn is Sceptille but its still top 10 overal
@@queensdaensa9413 Sceptile's my second favourite of the Hoenn starters but it's still pretty high up in terms of starters I like.

While I also would personally consider Blaziken to be my least favorite gen3 starter, I will fully admit that all 3 starters that generation were good overall, with none of them really being that bad in my eyes
One of the things I always liked about the whole torchic line was how it represented May's growth. Torchic at the beginning highlighted how May was an inexperienced and frantic trainer, with the evolution to combusken showing how May at this point is a confident and fully fledged trainer, and then the evolution to Blaziken symbolising May's independence from the group (specifically Ash) and her overall maturity as a trainer. It's honestly one of my favourite companion's first pokemon for this reason.

Blaziken is so op bc of speed boost that it doesn't need mega evolution instead mega evolution makes much more hard to beat it imo

You make amazing content every week and I look forward to you videos regardless of which character, but I particularly enjoy it when you make videos on characters from AG/DP such as Brock, Paul etc..since those two were my favorite series as a child. I especially love videos about May since she’s my favorite character. I can’t believe its been 13 years since she last appeared and like 10 for others like Paul and Dawn. Great video as always and thanks for helping me relive my childhood!!!

I just started to play Pokemon Emerald 2 days ago, and Torchic carried me through many battles, and I certainly has him torched Roselia easily. Got him to Combusken and he still rocking hard to carry my team. He's my favorite boy.

I've been bingeing this series of videos for a while now; gotta say I love them! It's nice to have some talk about stuff from the anime in this format.
I really enjoyed how much Blaziken and May grew with each other throughout the series; it made each moment that much more special.
That being said, I would've liked it to have evolved fully earlier in the series. Also, kinda strange how we never got a consistent appearance from a Swampert in this series. Eh, maybe Brendan could've filled that role.

Thanks!! I've always preferred the character arcs to the actual storylines in the series. Agree on Swampert. It's a bummer we didn't get better representation for it. Morrison had one, and we got to see a few characters of the day but nothing compared to Sceptile & Blaziken.

Everytime I see any of the Torchic line, I am only reminded of the Dorkly video. This video was great. I loved May's Blaziken. It was bad that they didn't show more of Blaziken in Sinnoh aside from the battle with Piplup.

Watching mays torchic in the show made me use one in my first play through in emerald and to this day blaziken is still one of my favorite pokemon

I liked that they finally split up the starters between the companions instead of giving Ash all three starters which made no sense!

May's Blaziken should've evolved sooner during Hoenn same goes for Ash's Sceptile that way those 2 would get more attention in their final forms!

Give May’s blaziken credit getting a tie with ash’s sceptile is real achievement type advantage aside this is big because sceptile did take damage speed form deoxys and went toe to toe with Brandon’s regirock

I do liked May's Blaziken because now that it have evolved into it's final form it can learn some powerful moves while training with May in her own Johto Journey like Thunder Punch, Blast Burn and High Jump Kick to it's disposal, If May found herself a Keystone and a Blazikenite then she can used it to Mega evolved her Blaziken during the Grand Festival Double Battle.
Thunder Punch would be an incredible addition. I hope to see it!

Hoenn and sinnoh are my entire childhood and I'm getting extremely emotional during those videos
I remember a Torchic defeated zizagoons in a video about how a Pokemon Nuzlocke was won in Pokemon Ruby. In that video two survivors remained, a Blazakin and a Swellow

My favorite pokemon of that Generation. Maybe if I rewatched it my opinion would change but Blaziken definitely was for me as a kid.
