Is the level of getting hurt still the same? I could see somebody that comply getting smacked around a bit while in the other 2 situations, especially shooting someone, the injuries escalating.
If think it's a nice info to have if somebody can get it, what is the "getting hurt" in the statistics used? The % of light, serious, fatal injury or something along those lines could make us even better informed.

One big takeaway from the interview with Craig: if you choose to fight back, fight a 100%. If you choose to comply, do so a 100%. Going halfway might get you hurt.

My grandfather had pretty good advice for my dad that he passed to me. “If someone pulls a weapon and demands your stuff, pull your wallet out, throw it behind them, and run the opposite way. If they really want your shit, they’ll go after that instead of you.” And it worked for me two times when I was a teenager.
Good advice. Unfortunatelly, I dont think there is a formula that would work 100% of the time. I knew of a woman that wss getting her car robbed and she was shot and killed out of frustration because she threw the car keys behind the robber.
@@ignacioorozco9919 no doubt. Like I said it only worked twice and that’s cause I was on the street, and I had room to escape. The other two times, I was cornered and gave my stuff up and prayed the guy wouldn’t shoot.
@@mrblaque215 what a shitty situation to find yourself in. I have also been held at gunpoint a few times and I just did exactly as I was told. I did gave up all my stuff but I was lucky nothing else happened.

I live in Brazil so I dont know how it is in america, but in Brazil, if someone tries to rob you with a knife or a gun, almost 100% of the time the guy who is trying to rob you has at least one more guy waiting just in case, meaning resisting will almost always result in being jumped by at least one more guy so I would say resisting is always th riskier choice, although according to the numbers in this video it looks like it is somehow different in america

I was robbed working the night shift at a convenience store. Now that's a bit different, it's more impersonal than somebody robbing your wallet. They wanted the register, not my own stuff. But I also got this impression that they were trying to be focused and sharp. You know like they were trying to be professional. That actually felt good. The dude in charge kept his distance, told me to open the register, to step back while he pulled the whole tray out and handed it to the other guy across the counter. No crazy eyes or pistol-whipping or anything that'd make me think I'd get shot for no reason. And also no stupid openings that would make me think fighting was an option. Special case, I know. I know people who got beaten and tied to a radiator in the back, and I can only imagine how that must feel. But my robbery, that was easy.
Although the rate of injury may go from 25% to 18% in the comply vs fight back scenario, I wonder if the severity of injury changes as well.
If the 25% rate of injury is 90% a punch to the gut versus 18% rate of injury being 70% chance of being stabbed in the side, the calculus changes even further.
That was my first thought too. Would really like to see the stats on it.

i also want to know the numbers of reactions that lead to death vs comply that lead to death os the victim.
Really it should have ended with- Only fight if they look like they are going to attack you anyways or try to take you to another location.
There are not many other situations where it is a good idea to fight back especially since you are not likely to have hundreds of hours of training in this specific area and if there is more than 1 robber you are completely screwed.
This is the best self defense video I've ever seen, and your undercover friend is a good person. "Work at a soup kitchen if you're afraid of homeless people" as a therapist, that's the best advice. We can it exposure therapy. Also don't carry a gun if you're not well adjusted. 👏🏽
His name is Craig Douglas (nicknamed "Southnarc"), he's been featured a couple times on this channel but he is considered one of the "big names" in the industry. Specifically, his Extreme Close Quarter Concepts and Edged Weapons Overview courses are probably the best educational resources in the world on being able to draw a gun while fighting another human (who might also be trying to draw their gun, it's also where they do a car scenario based on the experience Craig described), and fighting and controlling someone who has a knife respectively. Guy has a wealth of knowledge and is an overall gem of a human being.

I’d just watched a video of some Somali guys invading The mayor’s office in Mogadishu. Those guys WHERE zombies. They’ve been shot many times and bled profusely, but continued to go ahead. Drugs turn normal people into zombies! Never forget that !
I lost my dad to an armed robbery when I was a year old. He chose to fight back and he lost. It wasn’t a knife, but a single 25 cal bullet to the temple.
Im with the opinion that for self defense, being in an armed society is tactically advantageous. But its strategically disadvantageous to be in that armed society. Im from a third world country where guns are illegal to own. Guns went underground (obviously) and only became the worry of gangs and police. Almost no one is risking their neck at the gallows for petty crime with small money. Civilians dont have to worry about guns used on them. So for low profile cases, its at most just knives or machetes. And that can be mitigated by a random plastic chair, or a table, or a plank. Its easy to understand that criminals just dont want to deal with all that. Thats why our robberies are in the form of snatch thefts instead of gunpoint robberies. As a civilian, I think better lose a handbag and only able to watch it go, than dying to a finger twitch by some robber high on adrenaline. Comparing stats on nationmaster it says that the murder rate per capita in the USA is 83% more than mine. Btw have I mentioned my country is a third world country?

@@4xdblack oh sure. Im from Malaysia. We have among the strictest gun laws. Civilians know that criminals most probably dont have guns, so we know we always have a chance. Cops know we civilians probably dont have guns so theyre not on edge 24/7. Still pigs whereever they are on earth, but they dont treat us like a threat. We dont have cases where people get shot for reaching for ID, or getting shot for talking on the phone. Im not against the American 2nd amendment. I enjoy what american gun culture bring to the world. Plus, theres no way to reverse it. But theres pros and cons in everything. The only good reason to have guns is as a way to threaten corrupt governments. No more no less. The cons of it is, then, everyone gets a gun, even if theyre scummy.

That was something that speaks volumes that I’ve never heard before and that makes sense beyond anything I’ve heard in "self defence" anything. If you’re being moved to a secondary crime scene it’s always going to be bad news.

My question about the 25% full compliance versus 18% committed resistance injury rates is whether there was a trend of severity of injury.
Like you get a 7% reduced injury rate but do you increase your likelihood of that injury being potentially fatal?
Basically are armed robbers who are resisted more likely to escalate to lethal force than those that are complied with?
That statistic is pretty useless on it's own. There are far too many unknown factors.
Were they crying and making a fuzz? Complying but being too slow? Mouthing off? Did the robber have a bias against them? Does age factor in? Race? Were they handing over things of high enough perceived value? What motivated the robber into the situation in the first place? Etc, etc, and so on and so on.
A "gangsta" who wants to rob the preppy kid who took the wrong street home from school is very different from the meth-head with withdrawals who is desperate for $50 for their next fix.

Yeah, I was honestly kinda upset with the statistic being brought up the way it was. Not only was the type of injury way too vague, it also didn’t mention death at all, despite the fact that that is the ONLY real statistic of consequence here. This paints an entirely misleading picture imo.
@@Buphido I wouldn't say that's the only real statistic of consequence given how many points there are on the spectrum of head and spinal injuries between "harmless" and "dead", many of which are still a far far far far worse quality of life

I’m a police officer that has been in martial arts since I was about 14. I’ve always been attracted to it all. Sport and self defense. However the self defense has always been way more appealing. This video was wildly entertaining to watch. The statistics and real life encounters was great.
As a police officer. What have you seen as more affected with defense on criminals in different situations?
I am glad to hear that an officer actually trains... often times it is very insulting to a well trained, well intentioned citizen like me to be treated like A child by a man who i could kill 3 ways in 3 seconds... not saying that I have that intention... but police must stop acting like the "real man" to people who have suffered things that would break the officer and cease talking down to people who who make short work of them in either sport or warfare.
I have heard lots of stories of people in Brazil getting killed by fighting back in a robbery. I was robbed by 3 guys with foot long butcher knives and I raised my hands and let them rob me and walked away. Robbers usually have 2 or 3 guys.
You can tell you spent a lot of time working with wrestlers, I was really impressed watching the ultimate self defense challenge I didn't know your grappling skills were that good 😊

You have NO control of other people's actions. In my youth I experienced two situations on each side of the spectrum. 1. My father and I were robbed at knife point by 4 guys, when in a bus. The guys put 3 knives around his neck. He gave up his ring, and that was the end of it. 2. Two guys followed a young guy on the bus I was in. One took the students' gold necklace, and the other waved a gun around threatening everyone. They got off the bus, which was not moving due to a traffic jam; the one with the gun walked by my window, which was slightly opened, and they shot the victim who was sttanding. There was no reason for that. Luckily, the bullet hit him on the shoulder blade... again, no control
the victim that was shot, can you remember if they were looking at the robbers?

My dad told me some of his fight stories including 1 where he was getting mugged. But he grew up a black man in the 70s n 80s and had school fights, bar fights, tried to get into boxing. When he was getting mugged, from behind, he fought back by being smart, slick, and aggressive. He told me this happened after my parents divorced and we were supposed to come visit that weekend. He won that altercation without injury, but it was also a knife, not a gun.

The BJS study referenced is a little more nuanced than what red polo guy quoted. The study separates armed robberies into muggings (surprise attack) and confrontational robberies (threat issued). Victims who found back against confrontational robbers armed w/ handguns were more likely to get injured than if they didn't fight back. I don't want people to get the false idea that they are less likely to get hurt if they fight back against someone with a gun.
Had a tweaker in a circle K parking lot, straddling a bicycle, tell me he was going to pull out his knife if I didnt give him my money. As soon as he said that I gave him 100% palm in the nose. He stumbled,tripped over his bike and just stared at me. A kid standing at the Redbox saw the knockdown and started yelling ooooohhh! worst robber ever and personal highlight reel moment 😂

the fighting against knife in a friendly sparring usually is very different to real life scenario tho. In sparring , when you are "attacker" you know, that this "knife" is literally useless, so there is no need to really fight for it or to build your whole strategy around it.
In real life that knife is life and death question for both parties, last thing to lose, last thing to give up. Unless they don`t really want to use it, which is also a case in some scenarios.
I love the message of becoming better adjusted as a critical part of self defense.

I have been subbed to ASP for a long time, never missing a video. Recently this year I started watching H2H. Glad you and John got connected.
You guys have made me want to make a career of it and help spread the awareness to more people. It’s a new idea and I haven’t much background in it but give me a few years… my community needs an indoor shooting range and I think a firearms school, shooting range, and a gym/grappling gym all in one facility would be a pretty sweet option for people who really want to commit to being prepared for self defense encounters.
Cool to see you making a video about this. I remember taking krav maga back in the day and they would always say to just give them your wallet if they want that but the gun/knife defenses were only for if you felt like they were going to kill you anyway.
I couldn't help but always think "okay but how do I know??"

Frankly, even if you don't have the kind of life experiences like these guys do, you still will have lots of experience with people. So, trust your gut. It's pretty much the single best piece of self-defence advice there is.
@@jamielondon6436 There's a book by Gavin de Becker called the Gift of Fear that says more or less this: In a time of extreme stress, your fear instinct will cause your subconscious mind to assess and formulate a plan of action faster than your conscious mind can process it. He says just let that instinct guide you; don't overthink it or try to second-guess it, worry whether you're "overreacting" or being rude, etc.
@jamielondon6436 I agree on that. Just wanted to remind you on the movement to a secondary crime scene. That's what I heard a lot and at that point I would say compliance is not your best bet.

For me, I say if it looks like the guy wants to kill you or send you to the hospital, fight him.
If he just wants your stuff, give it to him.
They ‘ve tried to rob me several times and I believe that the best thing you can do for self defense is train “ANYTHING” that keeps you outside of fishy places and focused.
1st time; at the entrance of an arcade. Tried to rob my phone, but they desisted ( I guess there were a lot of witnesses and they idiots. I complied with that one…but still got to keep my stuff.
2nd time; on my way to college through a “shortcut”, 2 18 yo gipsy kids tried to rob me while their “big 30yo brothers checked up on them”… one got his hand inside my pocket and tried to take my phone out.
Grabbed his hand and managed to distract him until someone from a nearby built threatened to call the cops and they let me go un harmed and with all my stuff.
3rd time; A bunch of bastards decided to rob me and a guy I had met in a bar( he clearly had some nasty business with them), They got him to go outside and tried to convince me of going, I was having a drink, so I gave it to the guy that was trying to get me outside while I asked for another 2 drinks… he rushed the drink and tried to push me outside, to which I handed him the next one, and the the next, (we talk about a tube glass of whiskey), after the 3 cups in 10 seconds, he decided to leave 😂 and I stayed safe for the night.
4th time; I was in a bar with a friend and a guy tried to touch me and kiss me. I pushed him away and contours to drink my beer… next thing I remember Is waking up in my bed. Called my friend and he confirmed that everything was ok, he had taken me home, but clearly I had been drugged with mean intentions.
5th time; 5 big ass bastards surrounded me and asked “ what time is it” and took my phone ( another reason to have a watch); but it was so old that they gave it back ( they almost give me some money as they left 😂.
Form all those situations, ALL could have been avoided if I would have not been in those places.
There are bad people everywhere, but it is best to keep yourself as far from them as you can.
That's I pretty much always say, the two main thing to learn in self-defence are :
1°) Avoid notoriously fishy places if you don't have serious business here, especially late, and if you have no real choice, don't carry anything of valor, or avoid looking like a walking cash-machine, or avoid doing stupid things, like wearing a shirt of the wrong team at the wrong place (I'm french, here you should NEVER wear a Paris Saint-Germain football/soccer team shirt if you go to Marseille, it can get you in real trouble).
2°) The first thing you should train in self-defence is being able to sprint at full speed for about one or two minutes... agressors are usually lazy, they don't expect or want things to get difficult for them, if you manage to escape and run away, it's unlikely that they'll run after you for more than a minute or two, especially if it makes them stepping out of their safety zone.
Bonus 3°) Never respond to some nobody calling you just sitting there in the street, waiting for who knows what (especially if they are a bunch of nobodies)... especially if you're not somewhere familiar, if they want to know what's the time, a cigarette or a dime, they won't need you anyway, and as it is said in this video, and it's a very important thing, NEVER follow someone fishy into another "quieter" place, even if you already know you're being in an agression, once you're in the spider's web, you're dead, it's better to get a couple of punches and kicks in plain sight, if it happens, than taking the risk of much worse where nobody can see, hear or help you... as I mentioned earlier, most agressors are lazy... and cowards, most of the time they won't insist if things don't turn the way they wanted, they want an easy job, if they feel like you can give them quite a hard time, they most likely won't insist.

I've been robbed several times (late night pizza shop life) complied once fought twice.. I only regret the complied. They went on to hurt elderly people with their next robbery.

Back in like 2019 I got robbed at gunpoint by 3 dudes in a pickup truck in broad daylight, in front of an elementary school. Long story short I gave them the backpack I was wearing which luckily didn't have much in it. Afterwards when word spread about it some of my friends/people I knew would say things like "nah i wouldn't have given them anything" or "see this is why you need a gun". A sentiment I also see in the comments and just in general online.
I think one thing people dont realize is how fast these situations unfold, and how often the cards are stacked against you. Even with the power of hindsight that let me pick up on some of the cues before the robbery, there wasn't much I could do to avoid that. They were in a truck, I was on foot in the suburbs with no immediate escape routes. They had 3 dudes with guns, so even if I was armed the chances are I lose that exchange. And once they actually decided to pull up, it was like less than a 5 second ordeal to give them my stuff before they were gone.

Really good video, great content - Always good to hear professionals giving their opinion based on experience. By the way, that doesn't mean that every professional will have worthwhile things to say FOR YOU, your own circumstances as a civilian are different in terms of training and probably in terms of potential risk.
As to the difficult question of Comply vs Resist. For years I've taught that 'Everything is situational' by which I mean that every situation is unique and you should have as much training in different scenarios as possible, but even then reality is nothing like practice for 99.9% of people and attacks. However I do TOTALLY agree with the warning about second location - on that one the evidence clearly shows that complying with an attacker's 'request' to go somewhere else is NOT NOT NOT something that is a good idea to go along with.
Secondly, I say that whatever you do, irrespective of the outcome, you are doing the best you can in the moment and you should respect yourself for that. And assuming you survive (irrespective of any trauma or injuries you may suffer) then you did the right thing and you should congratulate yourself move on (and yes, I know that's one of those glib things that's easy to say but damn difficult to do).
As they used to say in 'Hill Street Blues' - "Be careful out there". :)
I really like the idea of putting effort into being more socially adjusted. Too many people are trying to become living weapons before developing themselves as people so they know how to properly apply that power.

I think the internet has saved a lot of young men from being stabbed or shot. What I mean by this is that I'm barely old enough to remember the time before online access was prevalent and people would watch movies of action heroes saying smug lines when they had a gun to their head. Then they would judo flip the bad guy on his face and catch their weapon. Of course in real life it's not so smooth but the 15 year old me would probably have felt confident about going against a knife because that's what I saw in the movies and at a certain age you feel immortal.

Adding to the wait your turn thing, I know a friend who was held at knifepoint (dont want to disclose details but it was not a robbery) and had their attacker sit on them. Their attacker set down the knife for a second, as soon as they did that they flipped their attacker over and beat the shit out of them before running out of the house. If they fully complied I'm not sure if they'd still be alive. Likewise if they fought right away well... knowing them theyd be alive but with a few more scars on their body. So yeah be smart
