- Since Brian and Jason only use thermite when they grill these days, they had a whole bunch of extra propane tanks laying around. Really the only sensible way to dispose of them was to shoot them.

Propane doesn't smell, contrary to popular belief. The scent is added to the propane so people can tell if it's nearby, due to the fact that you can suffocate in it.

Mark Lipowsky Yep, in airsoft a lot of people make use of propane as an alternative to purpose made "green gas" which is just propane with a pleasant perfume added instead of whatever stank they put into standard propane (Sulfur n something?) and they also add a bit of silicone based lubricant. They then proceed to charge twice the amount per volume.

This is honestly one of the greatest CZcams channels that I have ever found. Brian and Jason have the perfect dynamic for this type of content and always work well with the "experts" brought on. The writing has the perfect amount of depth to make the episodes extremely interesting even if you think you know about the topic. This is not to mention the very professional filming and editing. I believe Mythbusters were able to explode a car gas tank with a tracer round but they had to shoot it from relatively far away. The tracer round takes time to fully ignite after it leaves the barrel.

veps2i They used an incendiary round. They are designed to set things on fire, whereas tracers are just so you can see your shots. Incendiaries are banned is a lot of states, and very hard to come by in most of the rest, so it's not surprising they didn't use them.
Just found the episode online and the bullets are phosphorus tipped and ignite via friction from air so i guess they are incendiary. You are right, I remembered the episode wrong although they call them tracer rounds repeatedly in the episode.

Oh it's not particularly difficult to get API ammo and the like, but it's very expensive. You're looking at like 45$ for 10 rounds. Local laws may apply but most places that would let you do what they did here wouldn't be too knotted about API rounds.
What if you shot the propane tank/ gas tank twice with like a second or something in between so that the first ruptures the tank and the second on ignites the propane?
So the Fire extinguisher flying when you shoot it seems plausible

Not only is it impressive because of how smart they have to be to make sure that's safe, but it also looks like the coolest job in the world. My dad used to teach SCUBA diving, and one time a person's tank fell over and the valve on top cracked. Immediately all the air rushed out and the tank went flying over the pool and embedded itself in a concrete wall. So yeah, explosive decompression is not a thing to be taken lightly.

I only ask because I was talking to a customer at the restaurant I work at and made that reference, keep in mind this dude is like maybe 10-15 years older than me and told me I was too young for the reference, I'm 19 and I watched that movie when I was around 10. Guess it just depends on how you're raised.

Most gun people know all the "science" stuff this guy said. its actually pretty basic. and he got his calibers wrong, he said 9mm is 30 caliber. 9mm is equivalent to 38 caliber. 30 caliber is equivalent to 7.62 millimeter. idk as a gun enthusiast, this bothered me deeply lol.
9mm can also accurately be called .355 or .357 as well, as that is the land diameter for 9mm luger/para/ x19 as well as .380 auto, .357 mag, .38 special, and .38 Super

ahem.... well, you see, tracer rounds keep their magnesium/aluminum composit source at the front of the round and ignite by friction cause by air resistance and need to travel a minimum distance to insure there's enough friction on the magnesium for ignition. The distance the round was fired in this episode was not far enough for the ignition process.
Even with there being enough distance traveled for the magnesium/aluminum composit to ignite, the propane still wouldn't have exploded in a blaze because the round is simply moving too quickly. The spark isn't in contact with the gas long enough to cause a flame.

also, Mythbusters did a pretty good take on this with shooting a gas tank on a car. they explain it in pretty good depth if you haven't seen it.
This was actually Hornady Vector ammo, the burning composition is at the back of the round, so you can see it. And you can see it burning from the moment it leaves the barrel.

When he shot the tracer round he was very close to the target. Mythbusters did this experiment but with gasoline, using tracers. The problem they discovered was, at first they were shooting the gas tank too close with the tracer rounds. When they backed up to further distances, the tracer had time to ignite on the back of the round, and had enough heat to set gasoline fumes on fire. Sucks that you didn't try from further back, but love your videos.
