    Great idea, not so great finishing. You should open the tablet and do some cutting and soldering.
    Camera could be used as rear cam, and an usb adapter with a modified keybord or mouse or joystick could interact with steering controls

    Every car should just come with a detachable Samsung or Apple tablet for a headunit. They are light-years ahead of stock radios, they dual as a tablet on the go and their much cheaper than anything equivalent in aftermarket radios.

    So, I 'm considering doing something similar, but I have some questions about the software
    If you have music playing on your phone, how to you make it play on the tablet ?
    If you get a call on your phone, how does the audio get to the tablet and then to your car stereo ?
    Do you have an external microphone too somewhere ? And how does the audio from talking in the phone get back to your phone ?
    If you have music playing on your tablet and you get a call on your phone, does it mute itself ?
    No mechanical volume button ? Do you really use the tablet's volume push buttons ?
    Those are my most pressing problems with regards to my tablet installation, next is reversing cam install (I want HD cam and it has to automatically display video within 250ms of me putting it in reverse)

  • @4ndroid55

    How do you keep it charged?
    I have a similar setup and my charger is connected to the acc-port, but that means it only charges when the car is on. And i only have a 15-20 min commute to work, so i have 2 take it inside a few times each week to charge it.
    If i connect it to the constant 12v, i am afraid to kill the battery, and i loose the "turn screen on/off" functionality...

    • @jaimegsus
      @jaimegsus Před 7 lety

      The average battery has 5.000 to 8.000 mah running at 5 V, that means 40Wh of energy consumption per charge. Considering an average car battery is (72.000 mah at 12 V) you can get nearly 520 Wh considering a 60% discharge rate (you should never discharge 100 % a battery). Make your maths, with your car battery you could recharge almost 13 times your tablet before lowering your car battery under 40 %. If you ride your car once a week and considering an iPad whose battery life when hibernating can last over a week easey you wont have any problem at all.

    • @FedeHippo

    • @PhysicsAnonymous
      @PhysicsAnonymous  Před 7 lety

      +Michael Fisher the on board computer would be easy if your car has an obd2 interface, but given it's age, it probably doesn't. The HVAC system is a whole other can of worms. You could maybe do it with an Arduino and Bluetooth to the tablet

    good job man! I'm currently in the process of doing the same thing with the same tablet (galaxy s2 8"?) except I don't have all the fancy tools like you do. I have a dremel some ABS and a whole lot of sand paper to shape my body filler. oh and my car is a 98 honda civic. so I've got my work cut out for me (or so I wish) question though. are you willing to sell a pair of those snap in things? that would make my install a lot cleaner and easier. if so how much?

    • @PhysicsAnonymous
      @PhysicsAnonymous  Před 7 lety

      awesome dude! i ended up using quite a bit of sand paper and body filler on this one two. in fact the laser cutter was only used to mark out where i needed to cut. the plastic they used on that trim piece was fiber filled, so the laser didnt want to cut through it. those snap things took a few hours to make and was a pretty big pain in the butt. unfortunately i just dont have the time to make more. i considered buying something that used them and cut them out of there. maybe you can go down that path? post some pictures when its done, i would love to see it. if i end up with some free time i will try and help a fellow gingerbeard out ;)

    • @HellShock5150
      @HellShock5150 Před 7 lety

      Physics Anonymous well damn. yeah I've looked for that option but the only thing that would work is cutting a tablet case apart and it doesn't even snap in that well, or you have to put a ton of pressure on it to snap in which wouldn't work either. how about the wiring??

    • @PhysicsAnonymous
      @PhysicsAnonymous  Před 7 lety

      wiring was pretty basic so i didn't include much. i wired the usb charging power supply up to an accessory line in the center console so it only charges when the car is one, and the rest was basic car audio wiring.

      well he might jut decide to spend his money on this stuff rather than a 52 inch tv, SKY, season tickets to whatever team, alcohol, excess food, the latest phone, or upgrading his laptop every year. Personally I buy trainers from the local supermarket for £20 rather than £150 on Nike ones, Clothes from charity shops rather than brand name,, that give me spare money to buy the tools I want
