in the mid 70s i worked for an IH dealer as a mechainc and i got to service all the older farmalls when an H or an M landed in my bay with engine overhaul on the work order i asked. is this an in frame minor overhaul or a total overhaul.. the total overhaul included rebuilding the water pump and magneto or distributor. the dealership had a sun distributor machine. and i know how to use it. it made things so much faster to do a repair. nothing ticks me more than to see a complete overhaul and not check the distributor that might be worn out.. what my shop did is we had several distributors or magnetos already rebuilt and set in the parts bin. painted and ready to go . i got the job of rebuilding the cores when service work was light..i did trick them out and got a couple more hp out of the engine with better response as a result

You and Senior always provide such a good examples of how to get things done. The prep and thinking ahead. The attention to detail. The value and thrift of learning how to inspect and evaluate components for reuse and/or refurbishment rather than just throwing parts and money at a project. The incredible value of having and using the manuals and parts books. The thinking process necessary to determine safe shortcuts, if there are any. Those are just the high spots and don't address the specific subject matter, which are a who 'nother lesson if you need a tutorial on that subect.
You and Senior also provide great learning examples in general for people just starting out wrenching. You two remind me of my high school auto shop teacher, Mr. Winkler, who set me upon a good path for a career as a auto tech (including at a Ford dealership as you do) before I switched careers later in life (I'm in Senior's age group). I recognize each and every lesson you impart, small and large. So far I've been interested in every subject but even if one day I'm not, the vids are worth watching just to see things being done the right and proper way. In a word, you guys are inspirational! Sorry to gush here, but I've been getting slapped with these realizations lately and had to get them out.
Jeez, got a Craftsman tool kit in the 80's and it came with one of those screw starters. Never used it, since I did't know what it was. 40 years later, I cant' wait to try it out. Thanks Senior!
Too many of those screw starters went in the trash, most guys didn't know what it was or they used it as a screw tightener. It is a screw starter that is all it will handle. For your tool collection's sake do not lend it out it will most likely come back broken or it will not come back at all lol
There is also one made for Phillips head screws. Never did buy one BUT i have the same style one Senior is using. Mine is made by K-D. They are a life saver in many cases. There are also ones made like a screwdriver with a split blade and a collar that slides to tighten the blade in the slot or another style that has 2 fingers that grip the head of the screw. Lent that one out to another "mechanic" and it came back to me "never the same". Rather annoying because i had used it for YEARS. Lend it out once and it comes back all screwed up!

I used to work on mechanical items and was OCD like you two and thought I was the only one focusing on something other people would be like good enough, but you detail a few small things in the end the whole project looks better. I sure don't miss the busted knuckles and sore back, and really appreciate being able to sit back and watch someone else do it the way I would do it. Great job

I was working on my 1942 case (DI) tractor. Found the mag to be full of rust. I have a scrap farmall h out back. Took the distributor from it and the whole thing that your dad has on the counter I put on the DI. Fit right up. Funny that I just did the same thing to my distributor as your dad. I didnt do quite as good as your dad. I really enjoy the videos. Great job

After bingeing the D2-5J1113 series, and several assorted episodes, I happily watched the Squatch and Squatch Sr. efforts on the M. Wow!, fellows. Thoroughly enjoyed the work processes, the calm, compotent, agreed upon methods, the truly talented Mechanics, Machinists that they are and tho they may not realize it really good teachers as well.
As a guy who appreciates having the right tool for the job and a tool being used correctly. I enjoyed watching the specialty tools for whatever you came to, applied with familiarity knowledge to get a (Squatch/Squatch Sr.) approved result. The right and correct result, or do it again till it is.
Or you'll have a serious eye twitch, every time you see it...just don't let the "Walken" come out.

Hello; First let me say that I love your channel. You amaze me by how into detail you go. If you hate your day job so much why not work on other peoples tractors etc.? Anyway while watching the video with the flywheel why not remove the old one, flip it over and use that? I've seen it done many times and done it myself. Not on tractors but in other applications. Thanks again for the videos and keep them coming.

I still have a partial tube of Niehof distributor cam lube in my tool box. I haven't used hardly any since electronic ignition came around.

Hello Squatch253. I have an idea for you and I hope you like it. From all the parts that you have from the CAT D2, the bad and unusable ones, make a complete engine, and make a cutaway where we ca see all the parts, inside, outlined with paint. And you can turn it into a display piece.

I have learned by experience that painting is 90-95% prep.. It's a pain in the back side but the end result is worth it if you want it done right.

The rule of thumb for heat expansion with steel is approximately 0.001in of expansion for every 100 degrees F increase per inch of material
so a 2 inch piece of steel heated 100 degrees will go to about 2.002
or
a 7 inch piece of steel heated 300 degrees will expand to about 7.021
this is just an approximation/guideline

Actually a video on paint prep or rebuild cleaning is not a bad idea. Always interested in how other guys do that part. I just rebuilt the engine in my JD 1020 but like you didn't want to paint it and the whole tractor so I didn't.
The science of distributor assembly is falling by the wayside. I had a screw starter once upon a time. Haven't seen it in a few years. I fear it may have walked off.

Just wondering, is the ring gear directional? If a person were in a bind, (or cheap LOL) could the old gear have been removed and reinstalled the other way around on the good flywheel?.....Mike
It Isn't directional, and it is common for people to remove them and flip them around when the gear teeth get worn.
Just a follow up question: Can we find out if it fits?
will you machine a pilot shaft to center up the friction disc during the installation of the pressure plate?

Dang, now I will have to fix my hogged out frame rail slots on my Farmall 460 that I looked at yesterday wondering if I should just paint over them if anybody would notice. I would have to keep that Farmall 460 away from Squatch253.
I hope you can talk Squatch Senior out of putting that tractor killing Koyker loader back on the Super M. I had a Koyker Loader on the Farmall 460 and that is how the frame rail slots got hogged out. Do you want another one?

I have heard of using oven cleaner on the old paint to help clean and etch so primer and paint adhere better. I there any truth to this?

What would cause that flywheel to crack?
From what I understand it's caused by 'thermal cycling stress' (caused by rapid localised heating / cooling of a slipping clutch)
Heat. Hot spots from a slipping clutch or someone using the clutch pedal as a foot rest
Is that cracking a common problem? We have a 1945 H, wondering if that’s something to look at in the future
