Year 1973: this song shows what "pushing the boundaries" means.
And can I point out how cool the cover is?
Greatest album. Greatest cover of all time.
The cover girl is Amanda Lear
God I love Roxy Music. Every era, every album. Please continue this journey.
I love the Eno years the best
Just a word to thank you, Justin. You may be the only one who does great analysis, respects the songs by not interrupting them, but also the only one to be so eclectic. Who else does reactions to Kraftwerk, Van der Graaf or Greenslade ? You are the best. And I like watching reaction channels. I see a few others who are interesting, but you are the best.
Totally agree! Eclectic, insightful and humorous. On one of his videos posted on a VdGG FB group a commenter called him "a very bright genuine young man." Perfect description! The only reactor I check everyday.
@@markmaxwell1013 Same for me. He makes me discover new and old bands.
Appreciate that Chris :) Thank you
👍
An interesting, if rather dark track this. The brooding, long, intro that exudes tension, but you just know something else's coming. Then it bursts into a slow, almost dirty rock groove, with some crackin' guitar work. And that ending, the false fade out, before it reprises. Musically, it's clever stuff. And all the while BF narrates, almost whispering in that lilting style, on life, decadence, and his blow up girlfriend. This is fantastic stuff.
This is also my favourite Roxy Music song. It almost foretells the dark, atmospheric post-punk music of the early to mid-80s.
There is a great performance of this on their live album Viva!, a really great live album you should checkout. Isn't it interesting the number of rock songs about sex dolls? The line "My breath is inside you" has always struck me as a brilliant piece of writing. What a great image!
Yes it is so much better Live, Wetton and the guys are Great on that version !!!
You should check out eno’s debut album “Here Come The Warm Jets”
And Before and After Sciences, and Another Green World, and Taking Tiger Mountain By Strategy.
Ferry's lyrics are perfect. He knows how to paint a picture. I've heard of people describing what he does as painting a song and I agree. These are probably my favourite lyrics he's written. I agree that you feel content with the instrumentals provided for the first part of the song. You're already put in this specific mood and then they just shred it to pieces. When its done you almost don't know what to do with yourself.
You know that he was a painter, right? He's described songwriting as very much like painting. (I don't see it, but cool, he's a brilliant songwriter.)
Have I ever told you how much I love the fact that you don’t pause?
Well thank you:) I like to hear a complete song before talking about it, doesn't quite make sense to me otherwise lol!
Their first 5 albums are fantastic.
The building towards the payoff is so incredibly done, Ferrys vocal delivery portrays the desperation of the songs character descending into the isolation of loneliness and obsession and yearning for the most precious of emotions being love. The second part of this track well its just incredibly free formed and sonically beautiful
Yes, this is Roxy when they were still in their arty/somewhat experimental stage. The song structure is brave and the guitar is probably Manzanera's best. Eno's presence remained for a while after he left the band but his loss robbed the band of their strangeness. Good one.
Not enough room in RM for 2 Brians/Bryans.
I was one of those who recommended you react to this song, and your reaction didn't disappoint me. "But you blew my mind" is such a great moment in Rock for me. 'Editions of You' is another one from this album that I love. Thanks for the video.
Ty for recommending it! :D
Great you are getting into Roxy Music - I saw them on their first UK tour in 1972 - they were superb live.
The first two albums by Roxy Music are classics, sensational, and very influencial. And will blow your mind like this Dream Home…
Their album Country Life is the one closest to my heart. Great album cover too (Can related). But my favorite Ferry song is Windswept from his solo album. Their first album is also super.
To me Country Life was their high point when everything came together my favorite Roxy album and yeah the cover.
Hi JP. Dave from London. 1973 was a Pretty Good Year for albums, and that's an understatement. Topographic Oceans, Selling England, Piano Man, Aladdin Sane, Innervisions, Passion Play, Let's Get It On, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, Band on the Run, Quadrophenia... and two Roxy Music albums, this one and Stranded. Magical song, probably just pipped by Bogus Man as my fave from FYP. Some really interesting background sounds, courtesy of Eno, as you say, including the phasing in the reprise which was popular in the late 60s (as on Itchycoo Park by the Small Faces and Rainbow Chaser by the original Nirvana)
A great decade for albums also!
@@Katehowe3010 Consider it done! Maybe Dark Side of the Moon, Countdown to Ecstasy, and Berlin too!
I have seen this song performed three times Live. I live in Canada, America was late to the party when it came to Roxy music
Creepy and outlandish... I love it! No one like them before or after. Still one of my all time favorite musical acts.
Roxy are one of those bands that are fundamental. If I’m invited to go and play with a band, Roxy are one of about 5 artists that if they don’t know them, it’s probably not worth playing with them.
Precisely.
Sad I missed this so long ago. Great reaction. Remember when this was , early 1970's. Was anyone else writing songs about inflatable dolls. And so a generation was born.
What a song, any contemporary band would be proud of it and it's nearly 50 years old.. There are some great live performances on the tube including Apollo 2001 and hall of fame induction. Great stuff JP!
Hard drop.. Love Roxy Music great reaction Justin, thanks a lot.. Cheers
To me the last verse was like the punch line to it all followed by that great guitar solo. "I blew up your body - but you blew my mind."💥
A classic. Cheers from the UK.
"I'll keep you til death sighs". Ever heard of a puncture repair kit Bryan?
'Grey Lagoons' is my favorite track on this album, for sentimental reasons...
Gorgeous
ooh u played it...made my day...
AWESOME. And freaky which is why I love it. The fade out and return, wow; 49 years ago!
Great reaction JP. Look forward to you doing more Roxy Music and Bryan Ferry. Strangely enough, Eno once stated that his favorite is the next album, Stranded, the one after he left. The somber and melancholy vibe is also throughout the Manifesto album (their disco album)
I love this - but also read that Eno thought the 3rd was the most fully realized, and I always thought the 3rd was an almost perfect record.
@@edwardmeradith2419 Could be. All of their music establishes their role as the seminal art rock/new wave band. I really like JP's reaction to Mother of Pearl. I don't expect any other music reactor to have the same...uh, open-mindedness, insightfulness,...er, wealth and taste?!?...to react to Roxy Music as well.
Sparks, Roxy, bands that I've been listening to for 50 years or more. It makes me so glad that you young people are enjoying them now as I have for all these years
Great. I've noticed there are not many Roxy reactions on YT. Not many could handle explaining it like you do!
Your reaction at the moment of reveal was hilarious.
"Deluxe and delightful..." Lovelovelove this track. Along with DO THE STRAND, I played the egg-suckin' grooves off this track on radio in the mid-to-late 70s.
One of their best!
I saw Roxy Music on their first ever tour in England and everyone was blown away how good they were - fantastic band.
Live? Yes of course: Viva Roxy Music!!! One of the ultimate live albums of all times. Includes in every dreamhome a heartache and many more songs performed at their peak! You’re gonna love it…
As the late John Peel observed, "where did (this) come from" - of early Roxy generally, meaning their sheer originality
perfectly dissected I dig your veiw
Thank you budda :)
"....But you blew my mind". This is my all time favorite Roxy track.
For Your Pleasure is their best album. It's also Ferry's favorite.
My favorite also. Sheer genius.
Someone's finally getting around to Roxy Music. Hurrah! "Dream Home" pairs well with both Eno's "Baby's on Fire", and Van Der Graaf's "The Last Frame".
Loved your non verbal reaction, especially when the guitars and drums kicked in. My favourite Roxy track, too from first listening as a 15 year old. Never bothered reading lyrics as sung so clearly, but had always assumed. ‘.......death’s eyes’ relating to the changes in appearance at or near death.
The best, most diverse selections in ALL reaction-dom. Eno processing others through his synths? My sound fidelity is somewhat lacking, but it sounds that way to me. I know it was part of his/their methodology. The others commenting here are spot on. Nobody else does this, or so well! Cheers, mate. 👍😘🎶🎤🎹🎸🔥💖
The whole album is reaction worthy!
I have always enjoyed the late 70's/early 80's melodic Roxy Music. It was time I explored the earlier stuff.
Absolutely. The first two albums are their best!
I LOVE this song, and have never understood why. I think it's the build and the brooding. Plus the band and Ferry sound so great here.
Well that was fun.
Not a fan, but this is outstanding. Dark and decadent, stripping bare the layers of material prosperity to reveal the true horror of loneliness with surgical precision. Years ahead of its time.
Not a fan??? WTF??
@@SKYSAW59 I think he must fancies himself a writer...;)
My favorite Roxy track! Pretty unique in their catalogue.
The FYP album has quite a few surprises. Interested in seeing your reactions to Strictly Confidential, The Bogus Man, and the title track.
I love this song, a great concept beautifully executed. You are right, it's fantastic live, listen to the version on Viva! Roxy Music.
My all time fave Roxy track. .Seen them and Bowie many times
Its a good one! How were they live?
Amazing and everyone engaged not filming on mobile phones. Good old days
Excellent analysis as always. Really enjoy your channel. Please consider doing a full album listen of their album "Siren". I love Roxy and it's my favorite. It starts with "Love is the Drug" and doesn't let up. Many different moods and the songs blend into one another and the sequence of songs is near perfection. It would be one of my "Desert Island" albums if I could only take a few albums to listen to for the rest of my life. It's amazing! On a totally unrelated note. When can we expect the remaining tracks from David Bowie's "Ziggy Stardust" album? The remaining songs are all classics and it's been awhile since the last one. :)
Such a great 2nd album!
This is live on Viva! Roxy Music album… and it is simply stunning¡
The live version is awesome
One of my favorite bands and tracks. Lots of live versions of this song on YT from every era of their career. I personally like the Live at the Apollo DVD version. And of course the OGWT . Also check out the VIVA ROXY live audio only version.
If you like their more unconventional atmospheric songs check out songs like “A Song For Europe” or “The Bogus Man”. Their mid 70s live album ‘Viva’ is a fantastic time capsule capture of their live set and includes a great version of this song
Was very fortunate to have seen them about '75 @ the Paladium in Hollywood. Smaller than most venues in L.A. Ferry just killed it. 😁
Consider me jealous lol!
We need an updated version of this for those new "real dolls"!
It’s a great live song, when it goes LOUD. I’ve seen Bryan perform it a handful of times, and it’s always great.
So much great stuff from the 70's; it's almost endless. Check out the Roxy album Siren. My favs are Sentimental Fool and Just Another High.
They were phenomenal live. Saw them with everyone but Eno on Manifesto Tour. Fifteen feet from Bryan. Amazing.
That’s a bucket list event achieved!
I got a very early VdGG "haunted castle" vibe at first also. Could simply be about how empty success can feel sometimes. So many celebrities get caught up in addiction for example.
BTW FYI SW still seems to be down in the US.
Stay the best Justin! :-)
.
This is an incredible song, foreshadowing the New Wave. The subject matter is unforgettable. You won’t be able to avert your “gaze”.
I love Roxy Music.
Listen to Editions of You.
So unique, Ferry was such a great lyricist. I do like the later material and his solo work too, but I really miss his inventiveness and unique inspired ideas of this period, his later work is so minimal and simplistic compared to this. Ferry packs so much into this song, and the clean but warm upfront vocals sound very confessional, like he's right next to you. The break and then into the soloing is thrillingly genius, one of Manzanera's best and Paul Thompson is maniacal on the drums, never ceases to give me goosebumps.
Great choice for Roxy
This would be a great soundtrack for something: this song, Be My Girl/Sally, Are Friends Electric, Fake Plastic Trees, Plastic Age by the Buggles. We're surrounded by plastic. It infuses our lives, gives us convenience, haunts our dreams. When you watch a film like Blade Runner, one of the things that is so compelling about that future is the absence of plastic. It's apocalyptic, but it feels authentic. Reminds me of Peter Gabriel's Lay Your Hands on Me too - "plastic flowers on the window sill, no more miracles, loaves and fishes, been so busy with the washing of the dishes".
Thank you! I was just going to suggest Mother Of Pearl when you mentioned it being blocked. 8 ^ {
Here you are 🙂 czcams.com/video/9IydotyUrho/video.html
Always been my favourite track on For Your Pleasure. They did do some brilliant stuff post-Eno… try Amazona from Stranded: you won’t be disappointed 👍
I have the t shirt for that album. Love it. Maybe do Stronger through the years. Beautiful Roxy song. You’d really dig it if you haven’t already.
I like this. Especially creepy in mind hunter on netflix. They played this with a scene that had the btk killer. Hard to believe this is the same band that put out Avalon.
I subscribed because you did this song.
Thank you so much Lefty :)
@@JustJP - I still remember when my older brother brought home that first Roxy album. Blew my mind.
Roxy Music.. GOAT.
Saw Ferry preform this live in the 80’s blew everyone away. LOL
If you liked this check out “sentimental fool” off the Siren album.
Richard Hamilton was a pop artist who Bryan Ferry was influenced be (may have studied with him?) - Hamilton’s theme was how empty materialism was becoming (his subjects were kitchen appliances, moms in heels etc) - this lyric is still a favorite of mine.
Justin,
I really enjoy your channel. Your little beginnings crack me up. The variety of music that you rate is great, as I've been turned in to music unfamiliar to me. I however a huge fan of Roxy/Bryan Ferry.
As for a track that has a similar vibe is Sentimental Fool, from the 5th Roxy record, Siren. Same record with Love is the drug. Bryan Ferry's vocals are pure butter. It will take you on a ride. Promise.
You might want to check out his solo work. It's vast. Hard to pick a starting point. Let's Stick together is pretty cool as there are new tracks and a few reworked Roxy songs. The production is fantastic for the mid 70's. Sea Breezes is outstanding. Really a great vibe. The whole record is fun.
He does a lot of great covers and even a full album of Bob Dylan covers.
As for live stuff, good suggestions on this thread. One missing is a fairly recent solo Bluray Live Lyon. It promoted his Olympia record. Live those tracks come alive. He has top notch musicians behind him on this and the production is perfection. In Every Dream Home... Great here.
A song live that far outshines the album version is My Only Love. The 2001 Apollo Roxy reunion performance is great. Also the 1982 Avalon tour is captured well , Heart Still Beating ( Live).
Appreciate that Michael!
I'd love to see a reaction to 2HB, it's one of my favourite songs of theirs
The live version of this song on the album Viva! is great. But Viva! also has what I think is the best thing they ever released: their live version of If There Is Something. Also stellar live versions of Out Of The Blue, and Both Ends Burning.
IIRC the first part is the last track of Side 1 of the vinyl album and the second part is the first track of Side 2.
Yes! Phil Manzanera!
And out of the blue love came rushing in
Saw them do it live in 1972
"Amazona" also is extremely good, not quite so "substantial" but a great composition & arrangements, with similarly good guitar work and BF's vocal virtuosity
My favorite track from the album is the title track, with voice over at the end from Judi Dench!
lyrically the best roxy song absolutely
Sleaziest track ever. Try the title track of For Your Pleasure next...or The Bogus Man. Both mesmerising 👍
The 60's are really over by then. Lyrically brilliant.
Most underrated drummer?? Paul Thompson, the man is a beast!
ferry in this song, reminds me of lou reed and maybe jim morrison, on some of their tracks, soul, misery and wistfullness, yet emotive.
This is a great trance type song , but the content is about his purchase of a blow up sex doll for company , relating to the fact that the surrounds di nothing to Help his heartache. Bryan’s Vocals are totally unique, there has never been anyone who sounds like him and the original band were all incredible musicians. Reminds me of my high school days in Paisley. Scotland.
There's a lot of art in this. I believe the Brians (Ferry and Eno) were partly inspired by the work "Just what is it that makes today's homes so different, so appealing?" by Richard Hamilton (the first work of pop art).
one day could we have "song for Europe" ? surely an early power ballad
When I first listened to this track and "Strictly Confidential" (from the same album), I thought to myself "What is this???", I hated it. I only knew Roxy Music by their radio-friendly tracks like "More Than This". Then I kept on keeping on, and I've been a fan ever since
Primordial ooze.. Totally.
Jello Biafra does a really interesting cover of this song. It's worth hunting down!
See live recording from early 70s on 'Old Grey Whistle Test'.
