My Doc Says I Have a BIG BABY! Will I Need a C-Section? | Sarah Lavonne

  • If you've been watching my videos for awhile you have heard me say my key phrase over and over again related to big babies. If you haven't been told that your baby is big yet... just keep waiting! It is SO INCREDIBLY common that your doc/midwife (although it's more the OBGYNs) are telling pregnant women that they're concerned about the baby's size, or they are not sure if the baby will fit or even that you need a cesarean because the baby is too big... I'm back to answer this frequently asked question and explain where they're coming from, when you could schedule a c-section for a "big" baby, estimated fetal weights in general and what that means for your pregnancy.

Pregnant with #2 I am not concerned about this babies size. I am fully confident I can birth a large child.

Just a thought, but maybe care providers need to be more careful about the way they introduce this information to women, especially first time moms. Trying not to worry is easier said than done, and it’s possible that being scared the baby won’t fit is preventing some of those women to relax enough to labor efficiently. 🤔

Yes! Exactly! I’ve had 3 babies. My boys were large- 9lbs and 9lb9oz. My girl was a good deal smaller. I’m pregnant with my fourth (a boy) and I have a new doctor (not happy about that). The doctor who delivered my other 3 never said anything to me about it being an issue that my boys were big. I had them vaginally with ZERO issues. My new doctor, on my very first visit, made a huge deal about it and she had me feeling scared, even though my body has clearly already shown that it can deliver larger babies. It really bugged me- a lot. It seems she has a bigger issue with it than me. Of course, all that being said, it seems stuck in my mind, now. I like what Sarah said- and reiterated- You won’t know until you try! Scaring moms into interventions and/or c-sections is not okay.

I'm living proof that a vaginal delivery is possible for a big baby. Don't assume that because you're small that it isn't possible. I agree!! The only way to know is in delivery. I'm 5'4 (on a good day 🥴) and normally 116lbs. I birthed a 10lb, 12oz baby, in the posterior position at 39 weeks, 3 days and had a really smooth delivery, relatively speaking.

My doctor counted on that margin of error when the ultrasound told me my 3rd was 8lbs at 35 weeks. “If he comes early he’ll probably be around 8lbs, and you’ve had a big baby before so it’s ok” (my oldest was 10lb 3oz & my middle was 8lbs 10oz)
He came out 38+2 at 10lbs 15oz, vaginal birth, no epidural.

So good, 27 weeks and dealing with this! My midwives have handled this conversation in a way that has made me less anxious. Heading into the third trimester next week and have already been told this baby has a big head without any alarm around it. Plus, I was my mom's smallest baby (5 vaginal births) and the most difficult to get out so I'm just gonna stay calm and focus on pushing this big baby out. Thanks for sharing and loved hearing about Casa Adalia!

I’m so thankful to hear you say the only way to know is by trying! Because that’s the truth! I am very small framed and have refused third trimester ultrasounds with both of my pregnancies. My first son was 8 lbs 13 Oz and my second was 9 lbs 10 Oz. Both born vaginally though! And amazingly enough, I birthed my second on my hands and knees without any pain meds or anything! Both had shoulder dystocia but I only tore slightly with my second and needed a couple small stitches. With my first, I went in unprepared (homebirth turned hospital birth), ended up with an epidural, giving birth on my back, and the dr gave me an episiotomy even after I screamed that I’d rather tear than be cut. My healing time with my first was horrific and so drawn out. I couldn’t even sit down without wincing in pain for over a month. But our bodies are amazing because I was nervous the same would happen with my second. He did get a lil stuck (both my boys tried coming out with their hands up by their faces), but the OB I had was a fast thinking magician when it came to the shoulder dystocia and she made it seem so smooth. I truly think if I had a third trimester ultrasound, they would’ve tried to push for me to be induced or cesarean, especially with my second who came ten days past his “due date”, since they were already considering me “high risk” for a previous shoulder dystocia. Just craziness! Birth is magical though, and I’m so happy I went into both births trusting that my body was built to birth my babies. 🙌🏻

I was considered "too big" to fit before my mum was even in labour. She was forced into a c-section she didn't want. I weighed just over 5 pounds and was teeny tiny (as in the doctors freaked for a minute thinking I was a premie and they messed up the dates)... Definitely agree with "you don't know until you try"!!!

Sarah, I love, love, love your channel! As a UK doula I hear lots of mammas say they were told they were having a big baby! What is a big baby? Surely it’s subjective! I, and a few of my petit friends have had 10lb babies, no problem; but there are also mammas who have a ‘normal’ sized baby who has shoulder dystocia (the shoulder got caught) and needed intervention. Please don’t worry if you’re told your baby is big - unless you have bought a whole lot of newborn sized clothes! (Those wont last long!)

  • @emwyglad

This is exactly what I needed to hear. I’m 36 weeks. At my 34 week appt my OB told me I’m at risk for a c section because baby’s abdomen was measuring at the 75th percentile but he was a little over 5 pounds. She asked me how I felt about scheduling one and I said absolutely not. I left that appt very stressed and worried. This video made me feel so much better! I should add: I’ve done three glucose tests and passed them all. She also is making me check my blood sugar 4x a day and it never goes over 130. So 🤷🏻‍♀️

Sometimes its just genetics, both me and my husband's sides of the families have bigger babies, our babies have al been 9-10.5lbs except one he was tiny at 7lbs because I had HG the entire pregnancy and basically lost 50lbs and was so so sick but he is healthy and happy but still very skinny compared to his siblings but now he's very tall and long legged for his age. I am expecting my 6th baby and again told she's gonna be a big baby.

Haha, I would have LOVED to see this video before having my 4.5kg baby few weeks ago, I really got a bit scared when they did the measurements in the hospital (they were actually spot-on with their estimation). Fortunately (at least in retrospect) my own doctor did a measurment few days earlier and told me my baby had 3.5kg. So we had this huge deviation between the measurements and that's why they did not try to talk me into a c-section. I'm grateful for my all-natural waterbirth, it was an intense experience but I'd choose it always again over a c-section! And I'm actually happy that they only found out at the very end of the pregnancy (5cm dilated), otherwise I definitely would have had more worries!

i got mixed comments during my pregnancy with my 3 month old. Because i had high blood pressure i got told by one doctor that my baby would be growth restricted. then by another doctor that if i gained ANYTHING my baby would be too big and get stuck and die during birth (yes she said he would die, I was already stressed because baby was a threatened miscarriage and these 2 doctors scared the shit out of me) and then by my midwife that i could gain at most 25 pounds and be fine (after he was born i had only gained 3 pounds the rest was all him and the blood volume and water). He was 10 pounds at birth and i had absolutely no issues getting him out, i didn't even tear much.

She labored until I got stuck, they tried everything to get me out but ended up doing an emergency c-section that resulted in me being born without a heartbeat.

The doctor recommended a c section because it had been some time after my water broke and it looked like baby wasn’t going to come out. I was a bit sad because I did want to try to push but either way she was born on Dec 31st weighting at 9 pounds 1 oz! The doctor who did the c section told me after, “ Seeing the size of the baby and you being small, that baby was not going to come out of you, you needed some help and that is perfectly okay”! Our little one is almost 10 months and I recovered very well. I know all will turn out great for you mama! In my baby’s growth chart the line was above the average growth of baby so I had an idea he’d be a big baby however the midwives never mentioned it whatsoever. I was 5 days overdue and he was 9lb 13oz so nearly 10lbs! He got stuck in my birth canal for quite sometime but his heart rate was fine so we persevered and after 2 hours of pushing finally he arrived however afterwards I suffered with tears pretty badly. I tore through a muscle as well and I needed to get stitched up in theatre and had to get a spinal block. This prevented me from bonding with baby straight away which I hated. I lost a lot of blood as well and had to get transfusions. I might as well have had a c section as I had to go into theatre afterwards anyway and if I had the section I wouldn’t of tore and had a harder recovery.
Also my babies head was all bruised due to the fact he was stuck in there the poor soul :(
Apparently second babies are even bigger than the first!! So if second baby growth chart shows any sign of being above average I am asking for a c section right away.
Of course this is just my experience, I thought I had read about every single birth scenario and would be prepared for anything but nope! I was not prepared for the outcome I had.

Ok so my first 3 babies were 7lbs, 7lbs 9oz, and 7lbs 6 oz. My first two were both traumatic births. They got stuck! My first, I pushed 5.5 hours and had to transfer to the hospital where they used a vacuum. My second got stuck and was face up. I pushed 3.5 hours, again had to transfer to the hospital and ended up with a csection. My third I just skipped the birth center and had a successful vaginal birth.
I was just told at 29 weeks that this baby is around 4 lbs already and could be 11lbs at birth! Since I'm going back to the birth center, I'd rather not wait until birth to see if it fits🙄 So I'm really hoping they are wrong! If they suggest going to the hospital instead, I'm ok with it. Is funny how you just made this video I started following you a few months ago and I think you’re awesome. My due date is this Saturday (Dec.14) and my midwife recently told me that I’m having a big baby and I’m not going to lie is something that I kind of started overthinking being that I’m 4”11 feet tall and is my first baby. Now my question is should I get an epidural because I’m having a “big baby” ? I wanted to try to go natural just because I want to make sure I’m doing my best effort trying to push my baby out but now that I was told that she’s coming in bigger than 8lbs it changes everything. I’m just afraid of tearing and feeling every stitch afterwards or anything crazy happening. I’m not against epidurals, I actually seen your video about epidurals earlier today and I felt so much better about them. I have a big decision to make in a few days I just want to make sure I make the best decision. Thank you for your videos I hope you have a good Christmas Sarah! 🌸

I wouldn't stress too much, my first baby boy was always at the 95 perc and was born 3470gr. second baby girl between 12 and 20 per the whole pregnancy and born 3450gr. I was like 🤔😅 i was also worried but now i know!

My hubby said he was a big baby hhhhh 11 pounds. His mum birthed him vaginally without epidural. Champion.
Thanks so much for emphasising the importance of trusting the process, our bodies and those around us once we get there.
God be with me and other expecting mothers. We can only do and try our best🙏🏽🙌🏽

Hi Sarah!!! So I just had my baby on 12/05 & while I was pushing, I didn’t have so much strength so then the doctors asked me if I wanted help & they used I guess a vacuum? And now my baby has two big lumps on his head.. will they go away? Or is there something I can do to make them go away? Please answer 😭😭😭😭
