    Hey, I'm just watching your paradise video on my TV. You have this tripod chair, I see them at Menards. which is a local lumber/Home building supply store at least in the Midwest. The chairs sell for $8.00 a piece. If you buy 2 of them, you can take the fabric from the top of one and put it on the bottom of the second one and you will have a $16.00 chair that doesn't sink in the sand. Love your vids!

    Years late to watch this video. A friend and I went down this river from 231 down to somewhere. It was years ago, maybe around 2008. The water was higher then so we didn't have much issue in a canoe.
    About a month ago, a different friend and I went down the Conecuh from Hwy 29 down to Goshen. We had planned to go all the way down to Brantley but that part of the river was absolutly log-jammed, trees laid OVER the water in two places. Took us all day just to get to Goshen. Spent the night on the bank very unprepared and called for a ride in the morning. Was not the leisurely river trip I had hoped for but was a fun adventure nonetheless.

    • @TripSmith

    Hey Trip, I so very much appreciate your time making these videos. I watch you quite a bit. Wish I could paddle w u some day
    but I'm in Oregon. kinda far.
    I love your passion.
    I screwed up last week and wound up finally getting off the the river way after dark on a stretch I didn't know. Pushed thru a couple rapids trying to beat the sunset and got wet a couple times.
    Finally saw a couple kayaks on the bank about 9:30 pm
    so I pulled in there just above another substantial sounding rapid. Still 3 or so miles from my appointed ramp. After a climb I emerged next to the home of the kayak owners. They gave me a ride to my rig with my kayak. Great day, not so great night. But awesome people helped me to get home safely...
    I really didn't want to bother anyone. They said it was good that I did, as what was ahead should not be dealt w at night for sure, I agreed...
    Take good care my Man. Smiles

    When I first saw one of your vids come up in youtube I thought "Who the heck would watch an hour long video on some guy camping?" I began watching and couldn't stop! I've almost watched em all! It's awesome what you are doing, I love your videos. I've recently gotten into kayak fishing and really love being out on the water. Question tho: what is the black canister thing you have dangling off your pfd? Keep it up, you have a great attitude and it's fun to see.

    • @TripSmith
      @TripSmith  Pƙed 7 lety

      Yea, they are longer than your typical camping or outdoor video but they are also different which I'm happy to hear makes them bare able. So glad you enjoy the videos! Hope you get a chance to get Out There and enjoy some camping along with your fishing. That is a little camera holder, I had it on there but I've taken it off now as I never used it.

    Another great video! Good lord man I bet you don't work out this hard at the gym .We just did a 3 day trip on the Shanadoah river VA we went thru the same dragging boats for 2 of the days ....question I have been looking at Hammock tents for a while how do you think they work for a side sleeper ?

    • @TripSmith
      @TripSmith  Pƙed 7 lety

      Thanks John! Sounds like I need to film a little gym workout video, you might be surprised ;) At least you were out there. Dragging for 2 days is better than sitting at the office for 2 days lol Not sure what you mean exactly by hammock tents... But hammocks you can sleep on your side. I'm a side and back sleeper and have done both in the hammock. Hammocking can be a bit of a learning curve to get comfy but once you do, you will never look back!

    Question for you: I thoroughly enjoy all your videos, and I've learned so much. I'm trying to decide on wither to buy a URU bay (12 foot) or coast (16 ft). I'm opting toward the larger boat because I love camping gadgets and tend to bring a lot. Also, I may try floating in the San Juan Islands, although I primarily do rivers. Do you find that hour touring size boats are a hamper for floating rivers with whitewater or obstables requiring maneuverability? I'd love to have your thoughts.

    • @TripSmith
      @TripSmith  Pƙed 6 lety

      Are you talking about the ORU boats? I haven't tried one and don't know much about them. I'd be hesitant with them in whitewater though... I don't really like the thought of having to have float bags in the hull either personally... But if you wanted to go with them I'd say the coast then.

      +SailingandSuch when you set up camp, is it state land?

    • @TripSmith
      @TripSmith  Pƙed 8 lety

      +Jack Liszewski No, it's probably private land..... I know some of the people who owned the land I was paddling through but certainly not all of it. I don't worry to much, I just don't camp near homes/used property and always take all trash with me and try to leave little trace of me being there.

    We take this trip a lot and lots of others around the same area. Try beetle spins, Rebel Craw and shad raps. Rebel craws are hard to beat! We are very interested in going farther south. Elba is about as far south as we have been yet.

      Thanks for the tips Jamie! I'll see if I can get ahold of the rebel craw. You need to head down the the springs in the panhandle, pretty good stuff down there. Merritt's Mill Pond in Mariana is a great first trip and not to far.

    Have you ever thought of getting a sit on top kayak? It would be cool if you floated from hwy 2 down to the bay.

    • @TripSmith
      @TripSmith  Pƙed 8 lety

      +bp30656 I have thought about it, yes. I have owned some of them as well but for my intended use I find the sit inside better suited. One of my next videos (hopefully I'll film it this weekend) is on my opinion of sit on top vs sit inside. So be sure to check back next week for it. That would be really cool I agree. Its certainly on my list of trips to do. I know it would be an adventure for sure because there aren't many camp spots down closer to the bay and I could see myself having to string up the hammock in the trees or something.

    Awesome video Trip. Love the adventures. I been doing some day trips locally. I've been wanting to do some extended trips. How do you plan where your going to camp? Do you just hope for a good spot? I worry about being caught on the bank of private property. Any advice?

    • @TripSmith
      @TripSmith  Pƙed 8 lety

      +Joe McCranie Thanks Joe, glad you are enjoying them man. That's great you've been able to get out there, love hearing that. I dont, I just go with the flow and spot one whenever I can. I have learned where sandbars are depending on the shape and flow of the river so I can narrow down where a decent sand bar might be that could be good for camping. Google Earth/Maps can help you here.
      So I guess I have a general area in mind, but mostly I hope to make a certain distance in a given day and say "I'll camp in this area" and hopefully there will be something decent there.
      Well, in my area people are generally kind and I don't think they would mind if they were to find me, a lone kayaker quietly camping on the river bank. I stay away from any areas where a house may be or if it looks like someone's "hangout". Haven't had anyone even see me yet from the bank, just people passing by. And really I haven
      t never seen anyone else while I was camped on the river bank.
      I say go for it, just be sure it's not military land.

    Hey Trip! Henry here. I'm going up to lake george this weekend and planning to do some kayaking and fishing on a smaller lake and do some day trips. Really excited! What kind of gear do you where while your kayaking to stay dry and warm? Thanks a lot!
    Henry Schneider

    • @TripSmith
      @TripSmith  Pƙed 8 lety +1

      +Henry Schneider Sounds like a good weekend coming up Henry! As for colthing, my first rule is no cotton whatsoever. If that stuff gets wet it's thermal properties go out the window and it takes forever to dry. No good. If it's going to be really cold I'll layer up with a thin base layer or a polyester type long johns. Then on top of that I'll have a pair of synthetic pants and maybe a long sleeve fleece or just a looser fitting long sleeve shirt. Depending on the wind and temperature over that I may either wear my rain jacket or a warm fleece like vest. For the coldest time I'd have the long johns, pants, long sleeve shirt, long sleeve fleece and then the jacket or vest and jacket.
      I haven't needed gloves as my hands have stayed pretty warm paddling but I brought along some nice fleece fingerless gloves with the mitten piece that you can put in place if needed.
      A nice synthetic taboggin on your head and your good to go. Maybe a neck gaiter if it's really cold.
      Staying dry is pretty important in the cold which is a big reason I'm for a sit inside kayak. Sit on tops are hard to stay dry in.
      Good luck and have a blast my friend!

      What made you decide to wear life vest in 6" of water but not in the ocean? LOL
      Your vest looks similar to one I just purchased .. haven't used it yet, but feels snug, comfy and designed not to "bunch" around neck .. how do you like yours, and what equipment is clipped on it?

    • @TripSmith
      @TripSmith  Pƙed 8 lety +1

      Good question..... Well, I'm typically swimming in the ocean so if I go in then it's nothing special. Not everywhere was 6" and the water was moving. I have been in a few spots where if I went over the current combined with trees and rocks in the water could cause some issues. Imagine going down one of those small rapids, tipping over and hitting my head on a rock as I land in the pool at the bottom..... THose are my thoughts at least.

    Trip...great video...always enjoy...a dead gator?! did you see any live? I'm sure they must have been somewhere. I'm in Ohio and I think Gators would freak me out. Also wanted to comment on the trolling...I didn't catch anything for a few hours...you have to paddle slow to fish and loose a lot of time... gave up, let a Pop R top water drag behind the kayak 10 feet and caught a nice bass...couldn't believe when I quit trying to catch one I caught one...being topwater it doesn't get hung up unless your around downed trees. See you next trip...Trip!

    • @TripSmith
      @TripSmith  Pƙed 8 lety

      +J. Adam Witty Thanks Witty, much appreciated bud. Yea, it kind of spooked me as I was right up on it before I noticed it wasn't a log or a rock lol. I saw one alive (just it's tail sliding in the water as I rounded a bend) then on the sandbar the second night there were track and slide marks in the sand where one had been sunning. I don't worry about them to much..... Can't let them keep me inside.
      Oh cool! That would be fun to hook one while trolling I'll admit it. Tell you what, next trip I'll definitely be giving it a shot as I don't think that section of the river will be as riddled with trees... I'll have a few more videos popping up between now and my next trip (Sit-inside vs Sit-on-top kayaks and couple gear reviews) Maybe even the clothing theory one....

    Thought about either a bow or stern line (kayak length) for times such as your log crossing at the 14:00 minute mark ???? That way you won't let it get away from you. With a stern line you could catch the kayak if you overturned and had to swim after it :) :) :)

      @howardelzey2760 Pƙed 8 lety

      Yes it did. I think my hooks might be a little to large but it works great. I bought the zing-it line for this purpose and man that stuff is strong. As soon as I saw it I knew I had to make one. Last summer every time I went yakpacking my kayak turned into a mess with stuff all over it. Now I'm looking forward to just hanging my stuff up so I wont be knocking everything to the ground every time I bump the boat.
      It's interesting to watch your adventures on moving rivers which is a lot different then where I am at. I live on the land mass between the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean so every thing here is salt water and tidal. But there are huge areas of shore line where nobody lives so you can paddle all day and never see a house or road. I am amazed to see all the trees which are lying in the rivers you paddle.

      You betcha man! That's what I want to be, I want to get folks out enjoying. Age doesn't mean a thing, I remember being 17 11 years ago. Glad you enjoy the videos. Instagram? I'm still learning it but I have fun with my CZcams stuff and I have an interesting job that should create some good Instagram opportunities. Hopefully folks will enjoy that stuff too.

    Great videos man; Bear Grylls style but not too outrageous that they seem fake. I will say I prefer this and Choctawhatchee over the other camps though. I like the 100% wilderness style, kind of breaks the immersion when you see cities and stuff in the background on the other trips. Keep it up!

    • @TripSmith
      @TripSmith  Pƙed 8 lety +1

      +WOLFBOY Thanks Wolf! You know, I like your thinking. The cities and stuff in the background do kind of put the "wildernessness" off.... Well, good thing about the winter months is I won't be down at the beach around all stuff and mainly on rivers so you should be good for the next several videos ;) Thanks for the great comment.

    Had a friend drop me off 8 miles up this river nobody ever canoes or kayaks, luckily had my canoe not the kayak cause I lost count after getting out 60 times to walk! That was after the first 2 miles 😳 ended up walking 4 miles in some nasty stuff but the scenery was nice!

    good idea on you gear line, but i would get rid of the hooks and use small carabiners or your S hooks. Get about 7" of pvc that they will fit into. Then you can cap the ends and either fit the line inside also or wrap it around the outside. Those hooks are an accident waiting to happen, and the tangle a lot.

      @TripSmith  Pƙed 8 lety

      +Mike Carrington Yea, good suggestion on the hooks being dangerous. Sometime's I get aggravated with getting things are carabines and they tend to grab your stuff sometimes when you take things off of them. Would be a simple to attach whatever floats your boat.

    what type of damage did your rudder receive?

    • @TripSmith
      @TripSmith  Pƙed 8 lety

      It got caught on a tree limb somehow and bent just a little bit, but was easy to bend right back. Also, the rubber piece that it rested on broke and needed gluing back together. Nothing serious. But that is another reason that has me wanting to go to a yak with a drop down skeg vs a rudder....

    Hey Trip! Love the video! You should make an Instagram for all your adventures of like pictures of fish you caught and your camp and all that good stuff. Also you should try trolling while your kayaking but it might be hard on the river but would probably work on a lake or ocean. One question, do you ever get worried about your kayak getting dents Or scratched when you run aground or when your taking it through the woods? Thanks a lot trip! Excited for more videos.
    Thank you!

      +Henry Schneider Hey Henry! Instagram made! Check out SailingandSuch on there ;). Thanks for the suggestion. Trolling is a good idea, I'll have to give that a try. No, I don't really worry to much. Didn't pay much for the yaks, got them for a good deal on Craigslist and they are still looking and performing pretty good. Since what I've done so far isn't hurting them badly I don't see me changing to much any time soon. They are the plastic yaks not the fiberglass so they are tougher.

    noticed from some of your videos that you have wanted to eat some fish for dinner. If you wanted to you could take a small cast net with you to catch bait fish from the river you are in. Then you can bait them and cast them out. Usually that gives you a much better chance of catching something.

    • @badbannana1234
      @badbannana1234 Pƙed 8 lety

      to add to that, I plan on doing something similar to what you are doing with the 3 day trips on the river. Mainly for the fishing aspect for me. It's been fun watching your videos. keep up the good work.

    • @TripSmith
      @TripSmith  Pƙed 8 lety

      I'm pretty sure cast netting in fresh water in my area is illegal. I've tried my cast net in the saltwater with a little luck.... Still need to get better.

  • @BlaneysChannel

    I would bet anyone, anytime, whatever, that I could eat all the fish I wanted for dinner on a flow like that. The issue is to allot enough time. I would never consider doing more than 7 or 8 miles in a day if I wanted to catch and eat fish. You have to figure enough daylight in the evening to cook and set up camp also. By the way, your first bass was a keeper. Fish don't grow very large in smaller water. Cooked over an open fire that Bass would have been much better than canned seafood. Great video man. Keep that kayak wet.

    • @TripSmith
      @TripSmith  Pƙed 8 lety +1

      +Solo Roamin' I agree, you have to have the time to fish... If the water level would have been higher I believe I would have had plenty of time to fish as I had planned. Was it? For some reason I thought they had to be at least 12". I just looked and didn't see a size regulation for bass so I'm not sure. Guess I'll call my game warden buddy and ask him. Thanks for watching Solo, should be getting back out there soon.
