Ok - another thought that has been in my brain for years now - at minute 55, as you discussed the "washing" power of baptism, it reminded me of my sacrament analogy that helps me conceptualize the power and necessity of the sacrament. Just as our bodies will start to stink after a few days of not washing it (even if we haven't done anything in particular to dirty it), our spirits are the same. If we do not take a spiritual shower - the sacrament - every week, our spirit starts to stink as well, even if we have not engaged in any particularly spiritually "dirty" activities. We need a regular cleansing in order to be presentable to our Father in Heaven, and Jesus provides the spiritual soap and water.

I had to be immersed four times at my baptism 😅. The first time, my hair came up; the second time, my toe; the third time, the big ruffle on the bottom of my dress; the fourth time, my Dad wrapped my dress around me and put me on the bottom of the font. My eight-year old self thought I was going to be drowned. But I have a funny story (especially to startle the primary kids when they reply “FOUR times, Sister Clay!?!?”) to tell and I know that it must be exact and because of the way that ordinance and I interacted, I am all in and have been since then for sure. 😁

I was Baptized when I was 19 and was confirmed the same day but I really didn’t receive the gift of Holy Ghost until a year later when I really had a chance to repent of previous sins. I am so grateful for a wise & loving Bishop and Stake President for helping me find my way back.

I am so grateful for your comments and way of explaining about baptism is for the sins to come. My daughter (6y/o) showed some concerns about the promises she'll be making at baptism, afraid that she won't be "perfect" at keeping them, and I used a handful of the explanations you used to help her understand repentance and baptism being for the sons to come at later in life, and it really helped. I was so grateful for those pearls you gave me to help her understand better. Thank you ☺️

    Good afternoon Beautiful Saints🥰
Let me begin by sharing my journey in the church. At the age of 18, I returned to the church. I never had heard of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Entering the building, I knew right away it was true, no one bore testimony to me except for the Holy Ghost, whom I later have come to know him. I don't remember missionary lessons, all I remembered, two young men in white shirts would come and visit our home. Later I was baptized, after that I never went to church after my baptism I was only nine years old I never went to church to begin with, I only remembered being baptized to some church, I remember the font it did have calves around the font, I can still remember the location after that no church. The funny thing is here I am in a church I had no idea what it was all about, immediately after sacrament I followed the Bishop to his office, I sat down in front of his desk, asking to be baptized 🥰, sad to find out I was already a member. I threw myself into a church I had no idea what the teachings were about, however, what I heard and felt was good enough for me.
I didn't know about Faith as I know it now.
As Elder Uchtdorf states in one of his talks, I went full throttle having the desire for others to hear about this Jewel I found that enriched my heart and soul. I was told about the Book of Mormon and without reading I knew it was true, I went straight to the Doctrine and Covenants and loved the scriptures I read. Elder Uchtdorf spoke about Faith, I have exercised faith all my life, and have also had to understand that with Faith comes accepting Heavenly Father's will.
Forgive others and seek forgiveness through repentance. REPENTANCE is a gift, Heavenly Father has given us the gift of Repentance when we make mistakes just as President Nelson has counseled us.
I love the Five suggestions he has offered us, we may have situations we need to resolve, and we need to clean up our Personal Temple within us to give our Spirit more Spiritual oxygen.
Without the Gospel, we are just feeding our Physical bodies to give us the energy to deal with the day. And just live day to day with no purpose in life, not knowing which direction to go. Now with the Gospel, I learn that our Spirit also needs spiritual nourishment, we start with prayer, and reading our scriptures keeps the spiritual light in our lives glowing on the path to our Heavenly Father because he's light is lit.
And because of the Gospel it came to the point that my mother became angry that I accepted the Gospel into my life, at the age of 19 years old my mother gave me 3 altimatums to leave the church, the 1st 2, I bore my testimony with all the tenderness I could muster as I had great respect for my mother, by the 3rd time she was holding a pitch fork aiming at me, she said me or the church, by this time I did not care what happened to me, since I wanted to return to Heavenly Father from the time I was 10 years old anyways from all the physical, mental, verbal abuse I endured. I kindly said , mom if Heavenly Father asked me to follow him, I would follow him, when I saw the pitch fork moving forward with speed I turned and said Heavenly Father please take my spirit I don't want to feel the spikes tear into me. Then I felt the blow and fell to the floor thinking I was dead, I then in my heart asked Heavenly Father to let me come back and tell my mother it's okay, when I came too what happened was she had hit me with the handle and she kicked me out of the house never to return. But with time I continued to contact my mom and tell her I loved her, because Heavenly Father required me to love her, be patient because he had something better for me, it was the Gospel.

But more importantly I saw the relevant application of the message he was teaching to our day and how we have the same mission of preaching repentance to pave the way towards the second coming of Christ. My father told me his baptism story. It would have been in 1918. His brother told him that you get held under the water long enough to drown. So he didn't want to be baptized. On that day he was to be baptized he ran outside and hid in bushes. His mother got the horse and buggy and went after him swinging around the horse whip. He did end up baptized but perhaps his heart wasn't in it. But he had a good heart through his life as long as I can remember.

At minute 33 you are discussing ways in which we are to "master" a lesser, or more direct, form of the law before we are entrusted with a greater form of the law, or a form of the law that allows for more individual freedom (e.g. the iron rod vs. the liahona). For a while now I have had a picture in my head of the spiritual instruction of small children before they turn 8. In my mind, it is like Heavenly Father has allowed us an 8 year grace period with which to learn how to master our mortal bodies before we are held accountable for the influences of our mortal bodies. If you think about it, the Lord provides opportunities with all things for a "practice" period. Even our mortal bodies are our bodies that will train us for our resurrected bodies. Just as our parents gave us a "lesser" car to practice on as we learned how to drive, we were then entrusted to a nicer car as we proved our ability to treat it with respect 😉. Does that make sense?

It’s a good way of looking at it. A fighter pilot cannot be licensed to fly a jet, if they can’t control a go kart. The gospel is the same way. If a person can’t keep the Ten Commandments, they’ll certainly won’t understand, be introduced to higher spiritual concepts, or obey any higher spiritual laws.

Jared, I love listening to you! Thank you for doing this! But I have a question. You taught us that when the words are in italics it means they aren't part of the original translation and in the long family line from Jesus to the Father, in Luke, "the son" is in italics so the original simply read "who was of". Could this mean that in places it skipped a generation or might have been not direct lineage but closely related? Like how in the Book of Mormon it'll say that when he wasn't the person's son but was tied to them another way? Sometimes I wish I had you here to confer with in person when I'm studying. Ugh!! 😄

The Trinity was present in the Baptism of Jesus, The Father, Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit!! Three persons in one God. The baptism represents obedience and humility, and it marks the beginning of the Christs ministry. John declared Jesus as the Son of God. Isaiah 42:1 Here is my servant, whom I uphold, my chosen one in whom I delight, I will put my Spirit on him, and he will bring justice to the nations. Remember, Jesus always existing from eternity, always divine, John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, (Jesus), and the Word was with God, and The Word was God. Jesus is God.

Excellent question, and I certainly don't want to cause any discomfort with this beautiful doctrine! "Con" as a prefix means "with," so the con-descension was Christ's willingness to come down (descend) to be with (con) us. As when the Lord says to Joseph Smith in Liberty Jail, "the Son of Man hath descended below them all," that's part of the condescension of Christ. I hope that helps!

  • @elizacragun4697
    @elizacragun4697 Před rokem

When we see only the cleansing symbolism in water, then it's more difficult to see why Jesus needed to be baptized--he was sinless! To me, the water symbolises mortality (human existence) itself and the suffering and Joy we experience as a result. Christ was willing to take these on right along with us, but he mastered his human emotion, and we must do likewise. But mastering doesn't mean becoming emotionless, it just means that we are in charge of our emotions, not the other way around. Water is also the source of life. It can also drown or destroy. It also can lift us up and move us forward (as in the case of a boat or ship). I don't think it's a coincidence that Jesus walks in water or that he can calm the stormy sea. His humanity is his super power! Also not a coincidence that John is wearing animal skins. It reminds of us the skins that Adam and Eve were given to wear when they left the Garden and it reminds us that our nature's have become animal and that we must sacrifice (master) the animal parts of ourselves.

I have never heard it called condescending. It has always been said, "decending" from heaven.
If you look up "condescension " in the dictionary it give the meaning as: speaking down about people. Being rude and or mean with your words. Jesus was never condescending to anyone. Right!!

You're definitely right about that! Jesus was never "condescending." The condescension of Christ is a different definition of the word.
