  • We're heading to Alleppey to stay on a houseboat for 3 days and 2 nights in India. This is our first overnight houseboat experience. Join us!
Alleppey, also known as Alappuzha, is a picturesque town in the southern Indian state of Kerala, famous for its serene backwaters, lush greenery, and traditional houseboats known as "kettuvallams." These houseboats offer a unique and immersive experience for tourists visiting Kerala.
Here's a breakdown of Alleppey houseboats:
Traditional Houseboats: Kettuvallams, or traditional houseboats, were originally used to transport goods through the intricate network of backwaters in Kerala. Over time, these boats were converted into luxurious floating accommodations for tourists. They are made from natural materials like bamboo, coir, and wood, and are crafted skillfully by local artisans.
Comfort and Luxury: Alleppey houseboats come in various sizes and levels of luxury, ranging from basic to luxurious. Most houseboats are equipped with modern amenities such as bedrooms, bathrooms, a kitchen, and even a deck area for lounging and dining. Some upscale houseboats also feature air conditioning, Jacuzzis, and onboard chefs to cater to the needs of discerning travelers.
Backwater Cruises: The main allure of Alleppey houseboats is the opportunity to cruise through the tranquil backwaters of Kerala. These backwaters comprise a network of interconnected canals, rivers, and lagoons lined with palm trees and lush greenery. Cruising on a houseboat allows visitors to immerse themselves in the natural beauty of Kerala while experiencing the unique way of life of the locals who reside along the waterways.
Cuisine: One of the highlights of staying on a houseboat is indulging in delicious Kerala cuisine. Most houseboats offer authentic Keralan meals prepared by skilled chefs using fresh local ingredients. Guests can savor a variety of seafood dishes, traditional curries, and other regional delicacies while enjoying the scenic views from the boat.
Sightseeing and Activities: In addition to cruising through the backwaters, Alleppey houseboat operators often offer sightseeing excursions to nearby attractions such as villages, temples, and bird sanctuaries. Guests can also engage in activities like fishing, bird watching, and canoeing to further enhance their experience.
Overall, staying on a houseboat in Alleppey offers a unique opportunity to explore the natural beauty and cultural heritage of Kerala while enjoying the comfort and luxury of floating accommodations. It's a memorable experience that attracts travelers from around the world.

We considered leaving after the first day, during the whole boat switch fiasco. We waited around 2 hours after we rushed to get everything packed up, that was the most frustrating part.
It could have definitely been managed better. But glad we decided to stay for the second night. After the kids went to sleep, we snuck upstairs for some Karaoke and made friends with a couple from Bangalore 😂

In india you need to mix things and eat. For chapati's you get a curry. For rice you get things like a curry/sambar/dal. For breakfast like Idly/dosa you get chutney. That white cake like thing is called idly and that white sauce like thing is called chutney, you need to dip Idly in chutney to get the flavour
Idly is a fermented rice cake, and chutney is made with coconut / penuts / lentels

      @@OurTinyAdventure
This is worlds lowest point, meaning below sea level 1-3 meters.
Agriculture is done by stopping water from the river by a barrier, you were walking through that barrier. rivers water level is above the Paddy plants so water want to be pumped out constantly.
These are rarest of the rare places cultivation is done using this method.
Dangers are : during flood, water level in river rise, so barrier cannot protect, then water push the barrier and water goes inside Paddy field and that full land cultivation is damaged and will most probably a total loss and houses inside the barrier will also face flood.

    • @rajuros
      @rajuros Před měsícem

No. I am talking about the paddy(rice) cultivation doing there is below water level. I meant the water level is higher than the cultivating field level. The water from the lake is blocked by the muddy wall which is man made.

The first boat, which has couple of open balcony in top, think kids, even adults might will enjoy that better than double Decker closed boat + high chance it be multi occupancy, due to that fact but i am only 10mins in video, lets wait and see how your 2nd boat experience go.
Indian driving may seem bonkers to western developed nations mindset, but trust me you will never see a pileup of cars in India (train of cars in accident), and even if there is a accident, its generally minor ones. As long as a Indian is driving, trust me you be very safe. Embrace the chaos, it may not seem like it, but its organised chaos.

Actually in India most people believe that harder bed is good for your body. Many people also tell that they got back pain after using soft beds. So you find hard bed in many places in India. Also you find some beds with coconut fiber, since kerala has plenty of coconuts, I believe the beds there mostly made with coconut fibre.
And in other parts of India we used to have only cotton beds before these popular brands came and introduced with synthetic materials which I think is not as good as the naturally made beds

Indian medicinal science which is called Aurveda is widely practiced in kerala, For these massages they use Aurvedic practices which is good for your skin and body. So many people who got some dislocations or some pains when untreatable by normal doctors and medicine go to kerala for treatment. So try it once.
Disclaimer: I am not from kerala, so I am not telling this to improve my buiseness or something. Just giving you some information.
Also if you compare the people all over the india, people in kerala have thick hair and they are fit. Which is another good sign that their food is healthy. But I dont like the taste of kerala food though...

My hometown is in alleppey, earlier, the houseboats were owned by locals now the big business has come in and spoiled it for everyone and now its all about money and greed with shady operators looking to make fast buck, tread carefully anywhere in India, its not like Thailand or Philippines, there is lack of professionalism in Kerala with regards to tourism, good you did not opt for massage, unlike Thailand, Kerala, never had the concept of massage except in Ayurveda and not in any form related to tourism.
check out the Himalayan range up north in state himachal pradehs and uttarakhand places like manali, kullu, leh ladakh which would be a unique experience unlike anywhere else in the world. good luck

Hi, Since the food you are having may be new, please do not hesitate to ask anyone around what each item is and how or in what combination they have to be eaten to get the right experience. Idli, the sponge item is to be had with coconut chutney (the creamy looking sauce) or Sambaar (curry), take a piece of Idli, dip in either and savour the taste.... All in all loving the family members enjoying Kerala, most people understand English but may not be able to communicate because of lesser grasping power proportional to your speed of conversing. When in doubt, speak slowly and use equivalent words if possible to get a good response. Also do use Google to find out a little more about each food item you have so that you can get to know the ingredients, and also about the place you are visiting. Stay safe and healthy all of you

There are a few things you could have checked
    1. First thing, nobody stays in a houseboat for more than a day. You get pretty bored after that unless there are a lot of activities. It is an experience combining an affordable stay.
    2. Houseboats generally donot have WIFI, since it is away from shore you could use your mobile data which is pretty cheap in India.
    3. It was unfortunate that you need to change your room. Did they cite any reason?

    • @OurTinyAdventure
      @OurTinyAdventure  Před měsícem +1

      Good points.
      1. Yes, a day is long enough. Glad we got to experience both boats. One to ourselves and one with other guests.
      2. We expected wi-fi because it was listed in the booking description and the crew said it was available. The second boat had it at the front while we were docked, but not when we were cruising.
      3. We were put on the wrong boat the first day. Unforutantely, there must have been a miscommunication the second day as the rooms were booked by other guests so we had to move to the boat we were supposed to be on originally.
      Thanks for watching! 🙏

3 days on the boat is too much. In fact a 5 hour cruise is quite good. If you have seen one coconut tree you have seen them all. Nothing to do in the night when the boat is anchored. It’s a tropical place so lot of insects and mosquitoes.

@@OurTinyAdventure Yeah there are always few bad apples every where . But in general
Kerala being famous international tourism spot people are well trained in handling situations. When you booked for 3 nights they should have been extra careful. As a non-resident Indian , I always keep calling them till
Last minute to ensure all is well and I am getting what I paid for.
