FINALLY!!!!! I've been trying to get someone - ANYONE - to do a reaction to this song for the past 2 or 3 years and finally gave up. Thank you for finally doing this. Glad you enjoyed it! :)
You're absolutely right, Christian. This gorgeous song has been dropped down the memory hole. It reached #7 on Billboard but you never hear it on oldies stations or satellite radio, while songs that didn't get as high in the charts (e.g., "Make Me Smile" or "Wishing You Were Here") do get airplay. Why is that?
Well, you must not have come across Just Jammin'. He reacted to "both Colour My World" and "Ballet for a Girl in Buchannon" a year ago. Whenever I hear someone say they never hear so-and-so or such-and-such a song reacted to, I usually refer them to Just Jammin' because he usually has so keep that in mind in the future. Both he and Harri are proficient reactors who don't do the same old, same old. I like that both of them introduce me to music I've never heard. That's why I recently subscribed to Harri as well.
We slow-danced to Color My World at Victory Dances after football games when I was in high school. Nice selection, Brandon, and reaction, too, Harri. Tough hearing Terry Kath's voice all these years after his death. Chicago was never the same without him.
Yep, Austin, Texas, in the 70’s… that song was always the last song played at high school dances. Late in the evening we all knew it was coming and, once it started, the girls all screamed and scurried about, locating the dates for the last dance. Even guys who couldn’t dance a lick could dance to this song. You just embraced your girlfriend and rocked slowly from side to side.
So unique for them. No horns, even though it was written by James Pankow, their amazing trombone player. No guitar, but their killer guitarist got to sing lead. I, too, kind of wish it went on longer. It's just so beautiful. Frank Sinatra wanted to record it and asked Pankow to write another verse. He declined. Shows that Frank had good taste but maybe not much sense. The song is perfect as it is!
The story goes when James Pankow (the trombonist) finished writing this song in the middle of the night, he woke Walter Parazaider to play it on the flute. When Walter finished James asked if it was any good and Walter replied, "you just made me famous". And yes, this song was my wife's and mine first dance at our wedding reception.
Great story Pankow tells of writing the song: he woke up Walt the Flute player in the middle of the night to play the flute part. When asked if he thought it was any good he answered "it's going to make me famous" and it did.
So glad that you played the studio version, Harri. Live is fine, but this version is so perfect that it is the correct one to experience it initially. Great vocal, RIP😪
My favourite Chicago song. Nothing more beautiful than the piano intro with the drums keeping beat. Terry Kath' s beautiful vocals are so mesmerizing. Walter Parazaider plays a great memorable flute solo. This is from their second album Chicago from 1970. It quickly became one of the most popular songs for Weddings, Proms and University dances in the 70's. Great reaction Harri. Thanks Harri and Brandon. Loved it. Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦
This was the first song I danced with my husband, had it in our wedding, we are married for 47 years, it still brings a tear to my eye..thanks for playing
Yes, THANK YOU. My wife and I danced to this at our wedding. Sadly, 2 years ago I played this at her funeral - We had 37 years together so I'm blessed. Again Thank you.
This song fills my heart and transports me back to the time when I had my parents. It’s my uncle, it’s our gatherings, it’s a part of my life and became part of me without realizing it over so many years. Thank you Chicago. Thanks for appreciating so much of the beauty of this creation with me, with us.
This was my favorite slow dance song to ask a girl I liked at high school dances to dance. This was back in the mid 70's. I still think the music of the 70's is and will always be the best.
Beautiful piano to start this amazing song! Terry Kath's voice saturates the song SO soulfully! How about Walter Parazaider on the flute! One of the most beautiful ballads!!!
Chicago had three voices: Peter Cetera, played bass and sang high tenor ; Bobby Lamm, played keyboards and sang low tenor/baritone; and Terry Kath who played guitar and sang baritone. This was Terry's song. Bobby took over singing it after Terry's death, but it was not quite the same.
Not intended to be heard as a standalone song, it's just an excerpt from a Chicago song suite called "Ballet For A Girl In Buchannon" from their second album "Chicago" aka "Chicago II". The album was originally released in January 1970. I suggest you listen to the entire suite to appreciate it better. The go-to version is the original studio version from the album "Chicago II".
Actually it did get airplay as a single. But agree, it wasn't a real single. Harri is the 1st to react to what is probably Chicago's 1st big ballad. Overlooked. There's a good live version on CZcams, combined with Now More Than Ever, featuring Danny & Terry showing off their polished professional talent.
This is Terry Kath (RIP) doing the vocals, also one of the greatest and most underrated guitar players ever (look what Jimi Hendrix said about him)! His guitar solo on 25or624 is legendary. The song is part of a longer piece which included their hit Make Me Smile and several other songs. the song was used in a lot of weddings back in the day. :-)
Back in the day prom, wedding music! It was always felt that it was too short missing another verse. Really, one of my favorite ballads ever...simple, emotional, and timeless!!
The song was part of Ballet for a Girl in Buchannon suite off Chicago II. Live at Tanglewood 1970, is a great representation of such with the amazing Terry Kath very much at the fore. Highly recommended.
Colour my World and Make me Smile are both technically the same song. They are both cutouts from "Ballet For A Girl In Buchannon". AM radio was standard in cars back then which made AM radio king. AM had a time limit of 3 minutes but "Ballet" is 12 Minutes. The 14 minute Tanglewood version is the best as Terry , who sings lead in both parts, was on FIRE!!! Since it too has been cut here is a link - czcams.com/video/iFWdkBvxDoA/video.html
Another album my father had when it came out! I was so blessed to grow up with the best of the late 60’s and all of the 70’s playing in the house and car, and then as an 80’s teen. Doesn’t get any better than that ❤
Tons of Color My World themed proms that year and this is also part of the Ballet for a Girl in Buchannon ballad that became popular. It became a go-to "slow dance" song at high school proms, university dances and weddings during the 1970s. The song was initially released as the B-side to "Make Me Smile" in March 1970. It was re-released in June 1971 as the B-side to the re-release of "Beginnings"; this second single reached No. 7 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100. Chicago continues to perform the song, either on its own, or as part of the Ballet.
I can't believe it, but i actually walked out on this band and left the concert in the '80s after they came out on stage wearing neon jump suits. After hearing such natural songs as these, wearing plain clothes and just grooving together, not a trademark owned by some production company
I grew up with this great band from the 70's-80's. They were a rock & roll band with horns & blended elements of classical music, jazz, R&B, & pop music. They had a lot of great songs such as "Make Me Smile", "Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is?", "Beginnings", "Questions 67 & 68", "I'm A Man", "Where Do We Go From Here?", "Free", "Lowdown", "Saturday In The Park", "Make Me Smile", "Hard To Say I'm Sorry", "You're The Inspiration", "Will You Still Love Me?", "Look Away", "Feelin' Stronger Every Day", "Old Days" etc.
The Terry Kath years were the absolute best! He is the lead vocalist on this song and many Chicago songs. The reason this song is short is because it is just a small section of a longer suite entitled Ballet for a Girl in Buchanan, which also features Make Me Smile.
Hi Harri. This was on one of their first albums if I’m out wrong. Before Cetera replaced that singer. I don’t know the details of why though! I always loved Chicago no matter who was seen their instrumentals can’t be beat
A little correction. Peter Cetera once he joined was always considered the lead singer and Bass guitarist, and Terry Kath , who had a more soulful voice sang lead on some songs and was their great lead guitarist, who died from a self-inflicted gun accident. Robert Lamm also sang lead on some songs. Hopes this helps. 🙃👍
I use to play this song on my piano. Very easy to play. Just stay focused on the keyboard, don't rush through it and don't get distracted, and you'll be fine.
This was probably the most played Chicago song in the early seventies, at least in my memory. Played at every high school Prom, dance, and teen club. Along with Stairway To Heaven, the go to slow dance songs for the guys that were brave enough to ask a girl to dance. 😂 I never hear it anymore.
I remember when I was 9 years old, this was the theme song at my brother's wedding reception. It's so beautiful...Terry Kath was phenominal as both, a guitarist and singer.
The intro sounds like a piano student's finger exercise, but it sets the mood for the lyrics which are fantastic. Terry always put his entire heart and soul in every song he sang. Hendrix once called his guitar work fantastic.
This song was what I believed, as a little girl, love LOOKED like and FELT like and SHOULD BE. ( Didn't quite work out as I'd hoped) What a flash back! Thank you for this reaction ❤️
This was the fourth track of a seven movement suite titled "Ballet For A Girl In Buchannon". It appears on their eponymous unnumbered second album "Chicago", often colloquially called Chicago II. To truly appreciate it, you should listen to the entire suite, which begins with "Make Me Smile" and ends with its reprise "Now More Than Ever", both also sang by Terry Kath.
At 21 in 1976 I learned this song on piano (the ONLY song I learned) and sang it for my gf. Then it was sung by my sister as she played piano and my other sister played flute...at our wedding.
This song by Chicago was one that reached me a bit deeper than some of their other songs. The group 'Leonid and Friends' does a tribute to this song as well. It is also good. This is Terry Kath, the lead singer.
This is actually my very favorite Chicago song. Love the chord progression, and I learned to play it on the piano. Fantastic melody and taken to astral heights with the flute at the end.
I thank you for your critiques. It makes me want to listen to songs I have never heard, from bands I recognize! And, thanks too, you are easy on the eyes. 🤗
The vocals sound like the late guitarist,.Terry Kath. I just had a revelation. Without getting into too much detail, I had my first intimate encounter with a girl when i was 16 in early 1978. But also it's just so uplifting and if it doesn't make you want to get up and dance around the room by the end of it? There's definitely something wrong with you. 😀
Terry Kath who was their awesome lead guitar did the vocals on this one.
One of my hero’s. Such a talent. I’m 37 and I’ve never seen many people even my age who give Terry the props he deserves. What a 💎 gem he was.
And he died so young, he was an amazing guitarist.
Terry Kath was the best rock vocalist in the band. White Ray Charles as they called him
love his voice
Terry Kath was special, and Chicago was never the same after him.
FINALLY!!!!! I've been trying to get someone - ANYONE - to do a reaction to this song for the past 2 or 3 years and finally gave up. Thank you for finally doing this. Glad you enjoyed it! :)
Same!!!

@@danalyntuthill1538 Just Jammin' is terrific. (I was referring to AM & satellite radio.).
Terry Kath is singing this beautiful song!
I believe its Terry singing this one, sadly he passed too early.
We slow-danced to Color My World at Victory Dances after football games when I was in high school. Nice selection, Brandon, and reaction, too, Harri. Tough hearing Terry Kath's voice all these years after his death. Chicago was never the same without him.
You're so lucky. I had to deal with nineties songs it my school dances.
Definitely was a slow dancing song, great memories
Yep, Austin, Texas, in the 70’s… that song was always the last song played at high school dances. Late in the evening we all knew it was coming and, once it started, the girls all screamed and scurried about, locating the dates for the last dance.
Even guys who couldn’t dance a lick could dance to this song. You just embraced your girlfriend and rocked slowly from side to side.
A staple slow dance tune for sure.
What we used to call in Texas..."A belt buckle polisher." Dance real close and real slow.
Tell 'em, Peter! Regards from Austin, brother.
"Colour My World"is the perfect song for a bride walking down the aisle to join her groom at their wedding.
This is section 5 of the song
Ballet for a girl in Buchannon
Must listen to the whole side of the album
The story goes when James Pankow (the trombonist) finished writing this song in the middle of the night, he woke Walter Parazaider to play it on the flute. When Walter finished James asked if it was any good and Walter replied, "you just made me famous". And yes, this song was my wife's and mine first dance at our wedding reception.
"BABY WHAT A BIG SURPRISE" Is a Great tune...!
With a very tasteful short guitar solo by Terry Kath.
Our wedding dance song in 80
Terry Kath (R.I.P.) on vocals. He is also the guitarist in the band
Great story Pankow tells of writing the song: he woke up Walt the Flute player in the middle of the night to play the flute part. When asked if he thought it was any good he answered "it's going to make me famous" and it did.
Kath was not only a beast on the guitar, but had a strong, beautiful voice.
So glad that you played the studio version, Harri. Live is fine, but this version is so perfect that it is the correct one to experience it initially.
Great vocal, RIP😪
I think this is the PERFECT LOVE SONG! There’s literally not a single word that is over or understated.
My favourite Chicago song. Nothing more beautiful than the piano intro with the drums keeping beat.
Terry Kath' s beautiful vocals are so mesmerizing. Walter Parazaider plays a great memorable flute solo. This is from their second album Chicago from 1970.

One of their very best.
Yes, THANK YOU. My wife and I danced to this at our wedding. Sadly, 2 years ago I played this at her funeral - We had 37 years together so I'm blessed. Again Thank you.
💔♥️
This song fills my heart and transports me back to the time when I had my parents. Thanks for appreciating so much of the beauty of this creation with me, with us.
They played this at my HS Prom in 1977. It's so slow but I wish people would be hear this because it forces you to slow down. Just for a little while
Man I haven’t heard this in so long. Beautiful.
This was my favorite slow dance song to ask a girl I liked at high school dances to dance. This was back in the mid 70's. I still think the music of the 70's is and will always be the best.

I was listening to some of Harri’s old reactions and he actually did do the whole suite a year or so ago.
Seems like he doesn’t remember 😉
Actually it did get airplay as a single. But agree, it wasn't a real single. Harri is the 1st to react to what is probably Chicago's 1st big ballad. Overlooked. I think that this is one of my favourites by Chicago but all of their songs are excellent. Nice Brandon and Harri.
This has to be one of the most beautiful songs out there. Love it.💞

My favorite Chicago song . Thank Harri for reacting to this one
Color My World is one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard in my life.

This has always been my 2nd fav Chicago song after 25 or 6 to 4
Lots of weddings were blessed with this song as the first dance of the bride and groom.
His passionate words are so beautiful for someone special.
Such a beautiful song. It'd been so long since I'd heard it. Thank you.
I saw them twice in concert. This song was such a beautiful part of their show. This band was amazing live.
Best song Chicago ever recorded.
The Terry Kath years were the absolute best! He is the lead vocalist on this song and many Chicago songs. The reason this song is short is because it is just a small section of a longer suite entitled Ballet for a Girl in Buchanan, which also features Make Me Smile.

Beautiful ballad.
James Pankow wrote an incredibly beautiful song…
This has always been my favorite Chicago song
This was our wedding dance song! 50 yrs ago.
Always the last ‘slow song’ of the night at a youth centre dance from ‘72-‘77. 💕
I use to play this song on my piano. Very easy to play. Just stay focused on the keyboard, don't rush through it and don't get distracted, and you'll be fine.
Awesome choice Brandon. I love Terry Kath's rich vocals in this beauty. Great reaction Harri. 👍🙃🎁🎅🤶🎀☃️❄️🎄🤴🇬🇧🇨🇦🇺🇸
Finally someone reacted to this beautiful song... one of my absolute favs!
1976, this was the theme song for our Prom, it's a beautiful piece of music. I love Chicago!
Sung by the late great Terry Kath. Soulful, mature voice for a young guy in his early 20's.
Slow dance song in 9th grade! Every band had to know this and Crimson and Clover!❤
I’ve heard it too, and it was so beautiful, you could dedicate it to a special girl
Best slow dance ever and was the number one wedding dance in the early eighties
This was probably the most played Chicago song in the early seventies, at least in my memory. Played at every high school Prom, dance, and teen club. Along with Stairway To Heaven, the go to slow dance songs for the guys that were brave enough to ask a girl to dance. 😂 I never hear it anymore.
Of all their hits, my favorite Chicago song.
Great song. Originally part of “Ballet for a girl in Buchannon” from the second Chicago album. Awesome album
This song, dancing close with a great girl, searing a wonderful memoir into your head.
I remember when I was 9 years old, this was the theme song at my brother's wedding reception. It's so beautiful...Terry Kath was phenominal as both, a guitarist and singer.
This was played at my wedding for our first dance together. All these years later, I still love it!
Terry Kath and Peter Cetera took turns singing lead. I love both oftheir voices.
Don't forget Robert Lamm (Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is, Beginnings, etc.)!
One of the most beautiful love songs ever. ❤
Checkout Leonid & Friends cover of this one. Leonid added brass & strings. Amazing.
The intro sounds like a piano student's finger exercise, but it sets the mood for the lyrics which are fantastic. Terry always put his entire heart and soul in every song he sang. Hendrix once called his guitar work fantastic.
One of the best bands out there back in the day. Love this song!❤
The vocals of the Amazing Terry Kath.Gone too soon.
This is Terry Kath's song, terribly underrated
This song was what I believed, as a little girl, love LOOKED like and FELT like and SHOULD BE. ( Didn't quite work out as I'd hoped) What a flash back! Thank you for this reaction ❤️
This song still gives me goosebumps. ❤️❤️❤️🎶🎶🎶
The most standout tune that ate try sang lead vocals on. This was the wedding song of a friend of mine who passed away a few years back.😢
At 21 in 1976 I learned this song on piano (the ONLY song I learned) and sang it for my gf.
LOVE this song.! Chicago had so many hits in the 70's! Great band!
Absolutely. They are so underrated!
R I P Terry 😢 you’re a legend.
This is actually my very favorite Chicago song. Love the chord progression, and I learned to play it on the piano. Fantastic melody and taken to astral heights with the flute at the end.
This was my first dance with my husband on our wedding day! Our favorite song!
I thank you for your critiques. It makes me want to listen to songs I have never heard, from bands I recognize! And, thanks too, you are easy on the eyes. 🤗
Thank you for reacting to my very favourite Chicago song. Thank you Christian for requesting.
The vocals sound like the late guitarist,.Terry Kath. I just had a revelation. Without getting into too much detail, I had my first intimate encounter with a girl when i was 16 in early 1978. There was a radio playing an AM station of top 40 hits. Two songs I heard repeatedly during that day were this song and "With a Little Luck" by Paul McCartney and Wings. I have always associated those songs with that moment in my life. It wasn't until just now that I figured out why this song was played repeatedly in the spring of 1978 when it was released in 1970. So I imagine that this song,.being one of the better-known songs that Kath provided lead vocals on, probably made a bit of a resurgence as news of Kath's death spread in early 1978.
Played this flute solo a time or two when I was in high school.
Short, sweet and right to the point! Always loved this song!
Middle Part of "Ballet for a Girl in Buchanon" ( Make Me Smile)
A fantastic song by them. I can't remember now because you've done so many, something I wish people would react to more is the Chicago song, feeling stronger every day. From a musician standpoint it's totally a fantastic Arrangement and it's a total romp. But also it's just so uplifting and if it doesn't make you want to get up and dance around the room by the end of it? There's definitely something wrong with you. 😀
One of my absolute favourites...a beautiful song...short and sweet❤❤❤
Another simple but lovely Chicago song in the same vein as this one is "Song For You." I really think you would enjoy it.
One of my all time favorite songs!❤❤
My favorite Chicago song. Only thing it's never long enough! So beautiful and brings back many memories of dancing to it at school dances.
Love this ❤❤❤.
Every time I hear Terry playing guitar or singing I get so sad thinking of his senseless death.
I love playing this on piano. I play by note not ear and it was easy to learn
