CRAZY PT Cruiser (Stall, No-Start, No Comm)

  • This 2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser Turbo left the customer stranded and got towed to a local shop.
    The shop found some wiring damage, replaced a crank sensor, and the car ran ok...until the customer came to pick it up. He didn't make it out of the parking lot before stalling out xD
    Let's diagnose this weird start-stall issue and give the shop an estimate for repairs.

    I've seen this issue before and it took me some time to trace it down. One thing I learned is that the Cruiser will set communication codes if scanned while not running. To the point I found that power was intermittent to the computer. This would cause the car to run ruff, buck, and yes stall out. The dash lights would send confusing signals and when scanned, the codes were inconsistent never showing the same ones. Took a step back and went to the basics of checking powers and grounds to the computer. In the end it turned out to be a poor connection at the ASD fuse. As it turns out most of the power that runs this little vehicle goes through this fuse. It didn't blow but did show signs of excessive heat. Replaced the fuse and I was cruising in my automobile once again.

    • @jamesatkinson6480
      @jamesatkinson6480 Před rokem +1

      Probably something that was overlooked in diagnosis was not just the signals (data packs, waveforms to and from sensors), but 'ripple' on the supply feed in reference to ground, and when there is strange behaviour, check what that shows with another trace, or scope..

    • @windward2818
      @windward2818 Před rokem +1

      A fuse can show signs of over-temp when the fuse connections get oxidized to the point of increasing contact resistance. Which intern, increased heat which increases resistance and so on until the plastic housing starts to melt. If you catch this in time and clean the fuse mating contacts with Deoxit D100, and clean the new fuse contacts, with emery cloth and then Deoxit D100, insert the fuse, then remove and reinsert to wipe the contacts, you can drop the contact resistance down to the point where you can get some extended life out of it.
      However, if we step back and want to study the problem in more detail, a relevant test before swapping the fuse or cleaning the contacts would be to monitor the voltage across the fuse and fuse contacts while under load to understand the magnitude of the voltage drop.

    Hey Ivan😊🙋‍♂️, loved this video buddy. The ending was sad when you revealed the owner junked this PT Cruiser. Being I am a fan of the HHR's, I have a soft spot for the PT Cruisers as well. The one in your video is especially becoming more rare. Just like you said, 2.4L Turbo with a stick. And what makes that particular Cruiser even more rare, is the factory stereo. It has a CD Player and a tape deck. How cool is that lol. I hope it didn't get crushed though, hopefully somebody will save it. The Cruiser you worked on in this video would give my automatic HHR SS a run for it's money. Would be a heck of a good race. He would probably get me off the line but I would catch him at top end. Keep the videos coming, I enjoy watching during my morning coffee. Cheers buddy!

    Old Chrysler tech here. On some of the older jeeps 98 or so if the five volt reference to the map/tps and a few other sensors got shorted to ground it would cause the pcm to not communicate and it would result in a no start no communication. Unplug each sensor that shares that same 5 volt circuit untill comms come back. I think other Chryslers used the same controller and might be prone to that issue. I have an 03 PT/GT with a five speed. Drive it daily. Still runs.

  • @CrudeOilisOrganicYouKnow

    I've done a few of them PT's that had issues like this, and most of the time, it was something wrong in the ASD circuit. Burned but not blown fuse on one. Bad connection to or bad ASD relay on a couple of others. Something in that circuit was drawing more power than the circuit was rated for. And my sister had a 06 with a bad PCM. But it got junked shortly after sending it to the dealer for a 2nd opinion.

    I don't know, while it certainly could be the PCM I would want to examine the repairs before blaming the computer. Junking the car seems kinda harsh, it looked pretty clean. On the other hand, it is a PT. But if it is the PCM then was the wiring issues not really the problem? Just doesn't seem quite satisfying. Thank you for posting the video still interesting to see.

    In Australia, there are several PT Cruisers travelling about, but wonder what Chrysler and its distributors did with warranty, and coming up with easily identifiable faults, for keeping them going. When they were introduced, the body shape represented a 'retrograde step' in design, harking back to the days of the 'Airflow' and introduction of hydraulic brakes.. (The 1930's and 1940's). In the 1960's, the fashionable design concept (in Valiants) was to keep a lower centre of gravity.. As for the electrical issues, and some experience repairing electronics, I would look inside the engine computer and check down to component level, but the customer has called it junk, and decided to 'cut his losses' in time and money spent on the vehicle...

    Tipm ig feed . Pmc seems to always set a crank position sensor coad if it loses a power source. And It seems like when the crank sensor fails there's never a code for it . I think it has something to do with cranking voltage doesn't let the pcm see that the crank sensor is dead .

    Now I will sat this watching the video and you have just checked fuel pressure. I have had ignition switches go bad on older vehicles and cause this problem but it wouldn't be causing this issue on a newer car like this. First I would think immobilizer the pcm. Entirely possible to be pcm but the odds of the pcm going bad right after wiring damage from mice are low but and there's a big but here, if the wrong wires touched while the wires were damaged could it have caused the pcm to start failing. I would say it shouldn't cause the pcm to fail but could it have the answer would be yes. And with what I see I think it may have. Now for my favorite part, to see if it is in fact the pcm. Back to the video.

    Previous shop replaced cam and crank sensors. So I start scoping. And just when I was about to get both captures for cam/crank I get a crank no start. Constant. I don't blame the customer for junking it, my dad bought one back in the day and it was a nightmare for the entire life of the vehicle with the ONLY good quality being that it was good on fuel. It was in the garage being repaired more than it was actually on the road with one electrical gremlin after another. The final gremlin was that if you plugged in the rear O2 sensor it would blow the fuse for the transmission and refuse to start so it drove for the last few months with no downstream O2 till it was finally wrecked and put out of its misery. Lol

    • @averyalexander2303
      @averyalexander2303 Před rokem

      That's very strange that plugging in the o2 sensor blew a fuse unless the sensor was internally shorted. Either way it's stupid to design something in a way that a non critical part failing makes the whole thing unusable, but that isn't exclusive to Chrysler products. Years ago my Honda kept blowing the alternator fuse. When I finally figured out that the problem was a shorted EVAP solenoid, I was pissed that Honda put some nonessential emissions device on the same circuit as the alternator. Crap like that belongs on its own circuit or with something nonessential like the radio so it won't leave you stranded if it fails!

    I would have sparyed freeze spray at the engine computer and see if would stay running that way. If it did then I would take a heat gun to it and see if it stalls out. I do this a lot to jet ski computers.

    Junk it. Yeah baby. My son's next door had a PT Cruiser that my son could have if he could fix it we ultimately found the TIPM was bad. The neighbor ultimately junked it too.

  • @dbrandon4528
    @dbrandon4528 Před rokem

    OEM parts ONLY on these. The skim module is bad and or the key could have failed. Needs a PCM. Rey common. (Did the timing belt skip a tooth?)

    I dunno, Ivan.....are you sure you don't want to buy it as a cheap toy? I realize you're probably not a huge fan of the PT, but with a turbo and 5 speed, might be fun to play around with....
