  • I was finally able to get my tuner to record an entire Severe Thunderstorm Warning from my apartment here in Evansville. Although this is not for where I am living, we share a cable company with the counties mentioned, so here it is, raw and unedited. Enjoy!

The EAS alerts used to scare the crap out of me as a kid. But they did the job.

Last time I saw the EAS in my town, they did the red screen thing at 0:27, but it was for an AMBER alert and it said tune to channel three. That was a while ago, though. Now, they don't even interrupt us for anything, like tornado warnings. Our old system used to interrupt with a blue screen, a high-pitched tone, and some guy announcing the warnings to us, and that was it. Also, our EAS tests should still be just like 0:27, but green.

We Kentuckians know that warning quite well. Thunderstorms and tornadoes are in this area all the time.

The old red screens for warnings. Probably the first EAS screen ever used along with the green screens for tests, mostly likely existed since the EAS was first implemented in 1994.

1997, actually. My cable provider used this EAS type until 2010, surprisingly.

They are a function of the character generator used with the eas encoder/decoder (which happens to be a sage endec) and it possibly dates back to early 1996 when the sage endec became available.

Yeah, the red screens were my first experience with the Emergency Alert System. Definitely wasn't calming at all as a kid. I would just be watching Cartoon Network, and then BAM! That red screen and the screeching, spine-chilling sound would appear instantly, along with the uncanny text font. I find most other forms of the Alert System to be more tame than this.

Especially the EAS tests. If you left your TV on past midnight on loud volume it was horrifying. Had to sleep with the lights on.

Bah. Northwest Oregon EAS alerts are only for Winter storm warnings(last December, 2008. 11" of snow), Severe thunderstorms, and child abductions. And always tests, too.

They used to show these screens for my area back in '03 and '04. But Chicago's now using the plain ol' gray sreen. Nothing all that special, but...it is the EAS.

We did use the red and green ones when Comcast was still Mediacom here. I do remember RCN used the Green Screen and the EASyplus Generators with a Banner Saying Message will exit automatically. Now we use the Calming Description for the Hard of hearing screen(Blue or Gray DASDEC Screens)

@computerman78654 It was Insight Communications back in 2008...I don't know if it's still there anymore (haven't been back in two years). But I've seen a lot of different cable companies who will use that same scroll. If you look at some of my other videos of EAS, you'll see the black screen one which is used across the nation.
