I know it's said to never hid under an overpass, but I've always thought that if you get up in between the girders like these people, there would be a pocket of air where you could be safe from the high winds. Something similar to how pickup trucks have a pocket of air in the truck bed with the tailgate up where the high winds flow over it. Somebody needs to create a model of an overpass and put it in a wind tunnel to test if that is happening or not.

If you notice every single person injured where vehicles that got destroyed was out in the open. And oh look, look what's lying exactly where "experts" and sheep (morons) tell you to go during a tornado...a rolled over truck! Lying directly in a ditch where they tell you to lie down in..🤔🤔🤔🙄

I went to HS with Margie in the early 80s. She was such a beautiful and sweet girl!

And up until May 3rd, 1999 the public thought hiding under an overpass was a good idea for shelter not realizing that this was an F2 tornado and were lucky to survive even that whereas the May 3rd tornado was an F5 tornado with almost no chance of survival.

I’m a bridge inspector. We build our bridges to withstand tornadoes, but make no promises for anyone sheltering inside. These people were lucky that this bridge was of a certain design. On many bridges the little hollow area that they hid in does not exist. Instead it’s solid concrete. The bridge is going to stay right where it is, but anyone not firmly anchored to it is getting blown away. No DOT inspected bridge has ever been destroyed by a tornado. However, a few monsters like the 2013 Moore tornado damaged overpasses and rendered the structure unsafe until repairs were implemented. The best way to avoid this situation is to pay attention to the weather forecast and have a plan. Nowadays they can predict potential tornadic storms several days ahead of time. If it’s one of those humid, windy days where the weatherman has been warming about big storms, I make sure that I’m *not* out inspecting bridges after 12pm. Instead I’m chilling in my basement, or doing paperwork at my office, which is an old government building that has a fallout shelter.
