- I was tired of shaking my spray paint by hand like some peasant. I got a shaking mechanism off Amazon, added a motor and a timer module and now I'm living like a king. I just need to press a button and wait until my spray paint is perfectly mixed.

Obviously you spent more time designing and fabricating this shaker setup than the amount of time you would have spent shaking cans. And I like it. I think you also like doing such things more as a challenge that anything else. And there is nothing wrong with doing that either. I actually see me in such doings... Thumbs Up to your design efforts and never having non-properly shaken spray paint cans ever again!
Just a sanity heads up if you put your cans into warm/hot water for a few minutes before use you dont have to spend minutes shaking the cans just 15 seconds when warm and they are properly agitated unless its undercoat and it will need 30 seconds. Bonus is the warm paint and the warmed butane driving it will perform significantly better.

It looks like the electronics probly experience significant vibration, that could be an issue. The timer isn't built for that, so I expect cracked solder joints causing random shut downs or restarts.
My main takeaway from this is that i am going to build my own can shaker - seems fairly simple :)

I use a 10" x 3" PVC tube with a cap and a bolt chucked up in my drill. Drop the Spray can in and spin for 15sec each end of can. Work great.

3" Hole saw + something to wedge the can to one side. Works great, takes 3 seconds to load, and I always have it with me. That said, I want one of these.

I half expected the weight of the motor and the electronics just floating in the air to be a problem, but it seems to run fine. Nice job.
Yeah, it's slightly wobbly, but that won't cause any issues. And if we learned anything from last week's video, a bolt through the center of an assembly can do wonders for stability. The 1/4" bolt running through the middle effectively negates any real issues with the setup. Also, thanks!

I actually made one out of an old hedge trimmer about 10 years ago still use it to this day. I use a timer from an old toaster oven to control how long it shakes the can. it wasn't all that hard to make I sent pictures of it in action to one of those patent companies they told me it was not feasible to make and that it probably wouldn't sell anyhow looks like they were wrong or they stole my idea .

as an alternative to machinging the hex shaft, you could get a driver bit with a slimmer shaft. it would be 1/4" on the drive end, but the business end would be thinner.

how do you mean?
Attach a glass jar to it and put a bulb of garlic in the jar. If it's vigourous enough it will have the effect of peeling the garlic gloves. I do it by hand, but I've also wanted to make a electric gadget for the kitchen to do it. This would work. Overkill, but fun.

Nicely done! Kind of a conincidence. I left my pla 3d printed drill paint can shaker outside and the cold made the plastic brittle. So now I have to print another. Side note thank you for the information on the k1. You were spot on. I bought and replaced the original extruder and now she is a good one!
OH yeah? What extruder did you go with? I'm curious because it's working fine for me, but the print quality is pretty 'meh'.
@@RobertCowanDIY I went with the updated creality extruder. The one that is called the v3.0, as for quality I also upgraded the hot end to the microswiss and that has been very very nice! I am planning on starting to use my k1 as part of the small printer farm I have. If it works out I will buy a couple more of these.
@@Engineerd3dInteresting. I'm still not sure if I have the most recent one. I can't really find great details on the different versions. From what I've seen, it looks like mine has the most recent one. I'll have to check out the microswiss, I've heard good things but haven't seen a before/after comparison. Mine prints fine, but the quality is just meh. I've heard that gyroid infill is pretty necessary due to the flimsy connection of the hotend.
@@RobertCowanDIY for me out of 4 printers I have this one has the best overall quality. I tend to use thicker walls as the infill influences the outcome less that way.
@@Engineerd3dHUH, that hasn't been my experience. I get a lot of wobbling and such on the surface (VFAs?). I'll try thicker walls. What are your other 3 printers?

I always flip my spray cans upside down to shake. The assumption is they've been sitting right side up since they were filled, so all the solids have settled to the bottom.

ah nice, a lot of people seem to have those. I don't really have a big reciprocating saw though. Also, I wanted something I could set and then go prepare parts/tent for painting. this saves me literal minutes of time!

Nah, I'm on a big 3d printing kick right now it seems. Machining is fun, but for smaller projects like this, I just want to get it done and move on.

@@minskmadeWhat's your hate for it? I just had to run something on my CNC router the other day and man, 3d printing is easy mode. Going through the CAM process, swapping out tools, indicating the part, workholding, etc. 3d printing feels like cheating.

@@minskmadeTruth. BUT, it needs little intervention. I've learned to structure my projects around the 'wait time'. I always make sure I'm running a part overnight, or the first thing I do is start with printing something and THEN go clean up the shop and prepare for assembly or something. It's like cooking. While water is boiling, you cut up ingredients. While something is in the oven, you clean up the dishes. Use the downtime for something else and assume there will be downtime while stuff prints.

Hehe. In short, I just added a 1HP brushless motor and made it battery powered. More to come! I just need to finish it up and get the files up on printables.

None. After running for ~5-10 minutes, it's not really even above room temperature. It's a fairly stout motor and this really isn't much of a load for it. I think it was only drawing a few watts when running, so it won't ever eat enough power to get hot unless something is badly misaligned or bound. If there was a temperature rise, I would have used something other than PLA, as it would deform with the extra heat.
Nice solution. I do wonder if a soft start/stop would be feasable.
Since the motor has a planetary gearbox there is a bit of a mechanical soft-start since it's relatively low RPM. I know that's a BIT of a stretch, but I actually did consider a soft-start, but that would involve some sort of motor controller (or maybe just a big resistor?), and in the end it seemed to work just fine.

Nice. I have one I built 20 years ago from a copier. It’s over kill I could shake a car with it but the lesson I learned was shake the can like your arm would. Slowly. The short fast stroke you have will shake the straw out of the nozzle in the can. Slow yours down.
Huh, hasn't happened yet, but I'll keep an eye on it. Slowing it down is super easy, I just need to decrease the voltage of the power supply.
You should make a spring hook setup to retain the can. Tooless operation that way.

I just don’t shake the cans and have bad paint jobs. Very simple and quick. “Painters HATE this one weird trick!”
Ha. Almost every single time I've painted with spray cans I've wished I shook them longer. This will HOPEFULLY stop that habit.
@@RobertCowanDIY because my hatred of spray painting I started powder coating and cerakoting. Much more durable but of course a bit mkre of an involved process having to bake it. But I REALLY recommend looking into Cerakoting. You can do it at home, just like powder coating. The durability is insane, I use that for firearm parts mostly. Even on plastic but you can’t bake it as high of a temp. If you want an extremely durable finish, check it out.
Edit: You don’t even need a spray gun. I have used those Preval sprayers and gotten perfect results. Just thought I’d mention it.

Great idea but I'm just wondering if you could simplify the design by moving the motor forwards on to the main frame and mounting a new flywheel directly to the motor shaft.
I think that would cause more issues than it solves and your part count would still be the same. You'd still need some sort of mount for the motor, since it mounts on the face of the gearbox. Additionally, you'd end up over-constraining the assembly. The shaft would see the axial loads from the paint can shaking, which would be a problem for the bearings on the gearbox, they're not designed for that load. The bushings exist for that purpose. By using the key into the head of the bolt, it allows for some axial wobble and play around that axis, meaning those loads don't get transferred into the motor or gearbox. This was the simplest way I could come up with that wouldn't put all that strain on the motor's output shaft.
Interesting project. I wonder if a Velcro strap would hold the paint can to the machine, seems like extra work to screw and unscrew that hose clamp.
Yeah, I've tried a few different options. Reusable zip ties works great too. I have put quart cans in there just fine. Velcros strips would be fine, you'd maybe want a piece of foam around it to take up any extra slop. It does like being pretty tight.
@@RobertCowanDIY I was also thinking a bracket on top of the paint can lid would help secure things, but I suspect different cans have different heights, so it gets more complicated.

Just wondering why you didn't buy a hex to 6mm (guestimate?) coupler rather than turn down the hex shaft to round.
Wouldn't a lab roller mixer like they use for resins also do its job?
Fantastic project and I really want one. BUT, I'm not spending that much to shake a can. 😧
Truth, it did get a BIT out of hand, but making stuff is fun, so I justify it that way.
Now I want a fully 3D printed shaker that doesn't require and seatbelt tightening mechanism. Maybe a friction compliant mechanism to just insert depressing a button and delaying motivation for ~5 seconds
Ha. Way to over-engineer it! I'll leave that to one of the many YT channels that make something that only works for the video demonstration but looks great in a thumbnail.

I can only use one can of paint at a time. I'd probably just do a single can, use it and have another in there while I'm using the first.
Robert - that is a really cool functional project. I also liked the notches in the sides of the case to facilitate removing the display. Nice extra touch from an experienced designer 👍👍😎👍👍. Quick - question.... Did you need to print the case with supports on the internal cavity, or was the span small enough to bridge across the gap knowing the surface finish was going to be hidden?
No supports are necessary. You're right, the underside isn't visible and the geometry of the inside is 'optimized' for supportless bridging. That's why I did a long slot for the wiring rather than a circle (which would cause an issue with unsupported overhangs). Also, nice job catching the cutouts in the edges, that's exactly what they're for.

Did you end up finding the datasheet? I don't know if I'd be able to explain it better than that. Just google the model number and datasheet, it's easy to find.
yeah .. I've realized my wiring is correct but my application wasn't .. my motor (old battery drill gear-motor) has to high a start amp draw .. from what I understand it creates a voltage drop when, powering both load and relay from the same powersource, makes the relay drop offline .. so all I got was a click and a 4 deg movement on the motor .. then nothing ... was tearing my hair out until I came across a line in a forum entry that suggested the voltage drop .. not sure how to fix it yet .. either other motor (yours is an expensive unit in Canada) or maybe some sort of capacitor that stabilizes the input voltage OR two power sources .. works like a charm with my two desktop power sources btw .. anywho, thanks for the video ..
@@matsworld9386 Gotcha, mine was doing the same thing on a crappy power supply. A capacitor would most likely fix the issue. Best of luck!

Nice build and video! However I'm wondering if using a paint shaker would really offer better spray quality than just shaking by hand 🤔
Interested in seeing a short video comparing hand-shaken vs the machine and see the finished surface, then we can all learn something in the end!
I'm sure that already exists on CZcams? I've just noticed it tends to dry really fast and doesn't level out properly when you don't shake it well.
I am interested seen difference between not shaking and properly shaken. Let’s be honest we shake but for like 10sec. Even Robert said that in his video. I will check CZcams 100% certain there is comparison video.

Would the plastic actually break without the long bolts? In my experience PETG is terrible in high vibration situations. I've tried it for motorcycle parts too, it sucks. PLA works way better than people seem to think It surprises me too when I do a throw-away PLA prototype and it ends up lasting years and years of torture.
I don't think it would have an issue, we'll see though. It's along the layer lines (compressed WITH the layers), so it won't break there. It's also quite forgiving and just shakes a little bit. The camera is always going to make it look more violent and severe than in reality. I'll let you know if I have issues. But I tend to agree, PLA is far better than people give it credit for.
Neet way to mix paint. But it’s a bit complicated.
I use a heavy duty succion cup and a drill. I stick it below the can, not quite in the center, and spin the thing.
For piece of mind I put my drill on the hammer drill setting.
I’d hate to be the paint inside the can.

sixtyfiveford (great channel) made one of the drill ones - it's basically just a piece of ABS pipe and a bolt that you can chuck into the drill. I do question whether spinning the can actually mixes the paint though - I'd suspect the paint just all sits at the edge of the can and spins, rather than mixing.
@@gorak9000 I listen to the ball rolling before and after spinning. Actually, the vibration from the hammer drill function is stunning. Also, the slightly off axis sucking cup probably succeeds in spinning everything. I didn’t invent this, I saw a man do it in the 70’s in a workshop.

I really like the use of heat thread inserts here: no nuts to lose if you decide to remove the motor for more compact storage later and the PETG will probably keep the screw under a bit of tension so less likely to vibrate loose but with locktite it's just not going anywhere.
Also making the motor mount out of PETG along with the compliance in the coupling would along with better longevity of the plastic maybe give some dampening properties to the motor and the electronics box. Not sure if that's going to make any tangible difference in keeping all the solder joints or the brushes inside the motor intact but it's probably better than a full hard mount.
11:29 I think this is a very valuable feature, ergonomics are pretty important and the ability to adjust the screen so it's clearly legible without having to bow down or twist your head in weird angles is going to make this a lot more approachable to use. I guess after using it a couple of times all you need is to blindly press the start button and not look at the display but even for just aesthetics reasons I really like the decision to make it pivotable.
Hey thanks! Yeah, there are a lot of little details in there. The PETG motor mount does actually damp quite a bit compared to the PLA one. I think it should be just fine for using 5 minutes at a time.
Wonder if a grease gun clamp would be good as a quick release for paint can?

I tape a can or two to a long Sawzall blade and run it on the oscillating mode, shakes the living daylights out of a rattle can.

It's where it needs to be (according to the shaker), but decreasing the voltage a bit will slow it down. Since I'm using a bench power supply, it's easy to just dial down the voltage.

neodymium magnets would be a nice up grade no annoying clamp!
Hum. I wonder if the ball inside is ferrous? Would it end up catching and holding that in place?
I think most are steel, I've found a few glass balls in there when I was a kid.

A plumbers expansion plug and hunk of PVC turns any electric drill into a paint shaker in seconds, but this is still interesting.
MANY people have mentioned something similar. I still have my doubts about how properly that's really 'mixing' the paint versus just stirring it around. But if it works for your application, go for it!
That mini cutter is interesting. I see it being sold on aliexpress but not powered from DC, so I assume motor was replaced with something better.
Correct. The chop saw is from harbor freight, but it now has a 1KW brushless motor/controller and is powered from my Bosch tool batteries. I'll get to documenting the build some day!

When running, there seems to be a lot of wiggling of the motor and 3D printed bracket. Perhaps the 3D bracket should have had a 3rd arm to make it more rigid?
There's a bit of wiggle but it's not too bad. That mount is PETG which will hold up just fine with that wiggle. There's NO way you're gonna get a completely solid motor mount, even out of metal. Everything is going to flex because of the vibration from shaking the paint and the offset weight. I just used a filament that allows for flex, so the wiggling will be just fine.

Yeah, I need to find an alternative that allows for different sized containers (quart cans can fit in there).

I just give the can to my kids and tell them “I bet you’re not strong enough to shake this can for two whole minutes” then I have a shaken can in two minutes

Ha. I DID test it with faster motors, I didn't originally have that RPM on hand. I considered it, but at higher speeds the spray paint can is not properly constrained in the Z axis, so it will just self-eject when going too fast. I did consider re-engineering the cradle, but sanity got the better of me.

Probably. I'm surprised there wasn't an all-in-one solution out there. I initially went looking for something like this, but they only exist as commercial products and weren't really intended for a home workshop.

At close to $100 for all the parts, I guess I'll stick to the "natural motion" of my male hand to shake my spray cans. ;-)

You can literally just weld the tang end of a thick sawzall blade to a cheapo quick clamp. Spray paint goes into the clamp and the clamp goes into your sawzall. Follow me for more recipes.
Of course! You can also spray it into your mouth, swish it around and spit it at what you're trying to paint. There are levels here...

Well, between that and the 3d printers, I can just go inside... It gets pretty noisy. A lot of the time I have hearing protection on just to get rid of all the machine noise.
I'm sure you could really over engineer a quiet paint shaker but it probably wouldn't be worth the time or effort. Although now I kind of want you to.

Yeah, but you have to hold on to it. With this you can mount it to the bench and just set a timer. I like this way of doing it because I can setup my paint tent while it's mixing.

Do not try this at home; I routinely take my aerosol spray paint cans and put them in my heated ultrasonic cleaner. Heat and shake at the same time. I just take them out and shake them for 10 seconds or so and I'm ready to go.

No need for something like that around here just hand it to a local meth head .i seen a can shook so hard you could see ball dents from inside out i would never have believed it if i hadn't seen it with my own eyes

Utterly laughable! Why not ADD a Raspberry Pi to flash an LED while the timer runs?
I'm glad you found it funny! However, I don't think adding a Raspberry Pi would increase the functionality at all. The relay module already has an indication of how much time is left and you can clearly hear that it's shaking. What's practical and useful for one person might not be the same for someone else.
Not a good paint shaker at all, would not be mixed properly.
And why is that? It's moving up and down and side to side, just like the instructions say. The ball is also moving quite a bit, agitating the paint as well. It's kinda ideal.
Yes, I think the vast majority of the mixing is achieved by vertical motion, making horizontal motion unnecessary, but there is still some horizontal motion from this design. My only very slight concern is that it may be moving too fast to allow the liquid to utilise all the inertia, effectively shaking the can, while the liquid stays still.
VanSickle is horrible paint. Stick with the bog standard Rustoleum.
Really?! It's TOUGH and that's why I have it. It's what we used on Copperhead (our battlebot). It's the only thing that would actually hold up. Rustoleum wasn't cutting it.
