The Key to Wingers in Football Manager

- I’ve made a tactic video about wing-backs and forwards, but what about the most exciting players on the field. The players on Football Manager that can change a game with one long galavanting run through or around the opposition. The tactical equivalent of a spark plug. The winger. How can you get goals and productivity from the often isolated, touch-line hugging FM mainstay, and when do you need to switch that role up to do so. Also, what attributes go into this decision and what should you be looking for.
My plan is to eventually make a catalog about every position where you can reference it, then keep it updated every year or two so you always have an understanding of how and where players end up positionally. Wingers can score bags of goals on FM21, so this is a good time to make it. On my twitch save tactic, I have also been experimenting with them heavily, so it is a great time to do a FOOTBALL MANAGER DEEP DIVE WOOOO.
Much Love,
The Zealand

I like the positional breakdowns, but what I'd really like to see is a series on effective partnerships. BWM & MEZ, TM & P, ...... etc
AF and P is overpowered. BBM and BWM is excellent too
@@thetownenders7930 but a bbm and a bwm requires an attacking midfielder to work effectively
@@philaaaron If you're working with a 3 man midfield, sure. any 2 man midfield like in a 5 2 3 or 4 4 2, those work brilliantly
@@philaaaron I currently use it with one. But I've used it without one and had success
@@philaaaron BBM and BWM work for good defensive stability, and can work very well,
I always have one Winger score 20+ and Assist 10+ and my other winger has a combined G+A of like 5
I usually have one getting 10-15+ goals and about 8-ish assists and the other wing getting more assists than goals, somehow. On FM18 I had Sanchez on the right and Martial on the left, one season Martial was top goalscorer and Sanchez top assist maker, next season the reverse.
Me too, I was playing Bilbao and Inaki was going absolutely Ham with like 25 goals while Muniain had the lowest average Rating in my entire team
My Leeds United save had Helder Costa banging in 21 goals and 11 assists while Jack Harrison had 6 goals and 3 assists lmao
My wingers do shit piss all
I had one season on a currently 12 year long save where both main wingers had 15+ on both goals and assists. The next season with their roles not changing at all and they got 10 goal contributions combined
Yeah so I just put my goalless AML on Winger - Attack after watching this.
No lie, he scored in 14 minutes. Thanks, Z ❤❤
Hey man thanks for all the tips. Only started playing fm again last month after a 4 year hiatus and your vids have really helped. Playing direct football with your near post corner routine has helped me take Kidderminster harriers from vanarama north to 10th in league 2 after 3 season. Plenty more for me to learn so keep the videos coming!!
The question (and thing I've found I've had to do) is 'wrong foot' winger roles: so right-footed inside forwards on the right. Right footed wingers (on support) on the left. That type of thing.
I also try to let them gain the trait cut inside from left/right and then you can play them as wide playmaker, raumdeuter etc with the benefits of an inside forward
*laughs in nicolas pepé*
In my sassuolo save, my striker wasn't scoring a lot of goals at the first 10 games of the season. Then, i move him to left wing ( inside foward, atack ). Result: 34 goals in 37 games, won the golden boot and is market value is 78 million ( at the start of the season was 33 )
Maybe it's because I'm the generation that grew with Guardiola's Barça and the Spanish golden generation. But to me 9s are just facilitators for the winger cool kids.
It's literally that. 1 centre forward on support
I do other way round because I just can't get my wingers to score no matter what I do, but I sure can get them to pass to my striker
Inverted winger is my favorite role for this position. I've always liked the idea of my wingers cutting inside, but inside forwards never worked well for me. I feel like they act too much like strikers on a wide position, especially on attack. So i've used "regular" wingers on FM for many years, until the developers added the inverted version to the game. They do exactly what i want: they act like normal wingers, but they cut inside, finding passes for my striker and my AM while also leaving space for the full backs to overlap, but they're not afraid of getting forward and crossing when needed. I'm currently using a 4-2-3-1 with two IWs on support and both of them get a lot of goals themselves and especially assists to my striker.
Zealand: "Get goals from wingers."

Interested to try this now…getting beckham vibes 😍🤤
I love when a Zealand video confirms something I figured out on my own. The initial vision for my current tactic was to have a left-footed winger-support on the left and a left-footed inside forward-attack on the right. Crosses and width from the LW and RB, goals from the RW and ST, right?
It didn't quite work out like that, so I ended up switching to W-a on the left and IW-s on the right. The inverted winger disorganizes defenses carrying the ball diagonally, and the winger gets into goalscoring positions and actually puts balls into the net (and not into the side netting, looking at you, FM19 wingers).
Season after season in my save, my right winger (playing Winger on Attack) has perennially been the highest average rating on my team, and it's not close. It's nice when a video comes out that validates a tactical decision that I've been advocating for in FM21. I've been trying to tell people that wingers playing Winger on Attack get into those goal scoring positions in front of the net.
My Wingers are quite potent any ways but seeing the difference more clearly of IW and IF on players playing opposite wings to their preferred feet, has given me some better ideas for when i need certain wingers to play the opposite side to my preference. Thanks 👍🏻
Zamudios passing decisions, and the players passing decisions in general are driving me crazy.
Great video as always! Taught me a lot of things I didn't know yet!
Adama Traore is my favorite of the wingers I've used. He can't shoot or pass, but he's the fastest on the field, too strong to push off the ball and high flair. He'll tear up defenses by himself and score 1v1 despite having terrible shooting attributes. Absolute beast
when i watch your content about fm, only then I realize how little I know about this game,..awesome work,..and passion for game,..nice man,.you are best conecent creator about fm
The irony is that my wingers are the only ones scoring lmao

I once went on 8 game streak with only defender scoring from setpieces and a couple from midfielders later on with bayer leverkusen in 1st season and i still won a lot bcz we comceded like 2 goas in tha period against likes of dortmund and bayern (had a really tough starting schedule)

@@schneeraizor7020 same. My AF has 6.5 avg rating because he just distracting the central defenders while my 2 IW assisting each other
@@schneeraizor7020 same. I had a striker who is a really good poacher. After few months, teams have figured out and just play a DM in front of their CBs and my striker became useless. Moved him to the wing now where he plays as inside forward. I think the AI is really good against strikers this year
"No I'm not" had me rolling. Good one Reece.
analysis of specific roles/duties are very educational type of video! im looking forward for my favourite: THE PLAYMAKERS !!!!
Looking forwards to this!!
my duo at frankfurt was Filip Kostic and Victor Tsygankov the scored both around 15-20goals for three seasons, and got around 10-15 assists. Just amazing
Wingers are usually can score goals and this video proves it and very helpful.
Great video Z!
90% of my goals come from my inside forwards with the wing backs essentially playing as wingers and getting loads of assists. Maybe I need to watch the one about strikers.
Inverted wingers I find the best option if you have that rare wide player with acceleration of 19/20 it seems to make the most of speed attributes
Nailed it (the intro)
I have managed to get 12+ goals out of my WM-A (same-ish setup as shown here, just with a WM instead of a CM) this season. Much better than my opposite winger position, who often plays bad (but sometimes score a few in a game).
4;40 I went for the exact opposite - Fullback on defend. My winger has way more space to move around with and off the ball. The ball will be passed into the space that is free, winger will run and get it, cross from wide or pass into the box. Mind that I mean that in a 4-2-3-1. There is no second striker so both wingers have a lot of room to go wherever and the AMC on support is always nearby to offer a passing option if they're about to lose the ball.
I've had a right footed IW on the right work but that was mainly due to him being top 3 players in the league
Can we have a video of combinations? I'm a bit new and not sure what to set for partnerships in the midfield, or Wingers/FullBack role combinations etc
Great video btw
Took me a 5 month later rewatch to implement this with narrow wingers but heck it works well
I'm playing a 4-2-3-1 with an inverted winger on the right with an attacking mentality. On the left is an inside forward on support (this a Knap tactic) who's goals, assists and average rating is disappointing regardless of the quality of the player I use there.
14:50 I noticed there's a video clip showing an example on how certain role works. What i want to ask is, is that a game skin or does it already exist from the game? Because i don't have that feature in my FM20.
Hi Zealand, do you have any tips on how to develop goalkeepers? Mine just seem to lose potential and have minimal attribute growth.
Did you already tried Trequartista?
That's the only role that do what i want when i'm in positional play in attack when I have a right winger, right footed, with a right full back "attacking".
On the other roles, they keep bumping in eatch other. Trequartista role will put your winger closer to your striker, leaving the wide for you full-back.
I have both wingers on support with an inverted wing back on attack on the left and a full back on support on the right. I then have a mezzala on the left and box to box midfielder on the right of my central midfield both on support. I play as Newells in Argentina and I'm almost invincible.
Hmmm.. would you reccomend the winger have to be on the correct foot for this to work? Or it does not matter.
Tonight, 30/06/21 i learn how to make a 4123 work, thanks big Z
7:33 no GK on the bench!? you're a madman Zealand
My winger is one of my top goal scorers every season. I set him up on the right in a 442 on the same side as a DLF and he constantly gets into the box.
Zamudio is the "FOOTBALL IS LIFE" guy from Ted Lasso :)
I prefer them to be inside forwards and have my backs doing the overlaps.... my inside forwards are often those who makes the difference.... maybe because I often play with only one striker in a 4-2-3-1 scheme.
Same here. I play a 4-2-3-1 and have my inside forwards wide so they would pick the ball up and move in field. Ended up creating a load of goals and assists and had one of my wingers get 19 goals, 27 assists in a season
What I learned here about inverted wingers may save my second tier Icelandic side.
I play this formation but with 5 at the back instead of a dm. I like to switch the offset striker and winger to the other flank now and then to keep it fresh. I always underlap and over lap on the side with the winger and overlap on the opposite side.
I also have my offset striker on stay wider and pretty much always a false nine maybe a trequista (i know i most likely spelt that wrong lol) to fill some of that empty space on the wing
My wingers are my only scorers Zealand!!!
The best output ive gotten from the wings is playing a playmaker there... the one other legendary player I've had there hugged the line and still got 25-30 goals a season but with a natural 20 in crossing got so many assists...
I'm the complete opposite, I play inside forwards on support, tell them to stay wide, play extremely wide, and use inverted full backs and mezzalas.
where can I get that nice tactic? nice videos btw!
not to brag but i have a kickass tatic of choosing tall wingers with decent heading (or one of the two at least) and crossing from one winger to the other that is inside the box, gets me a pretty good amount of goals always, either from heading or rebounds
Wait a second Zealand, what do you precisely by the assertion that "Inside Forwards DO NOT have the 'stay wider' instruction"?
In FM21, which is what I'm playing primarily, you can give IFs the instruction of "stay wider" under role instructions.
I believe it simply effects initial starting positions for the IF, however, and doesn't influence their propensity to drift inside and look for space.
Have you tried the stay wider instruction on the IF before? How do you like it compared to "Sit More Narrow" and no instructions (regarding starting width) whatsoever?
I'm referring to the player role instructions, not team width instructions.
Cheers!
pretty sure he just means its off by default
on my bilbao save where i won la liga in the second and third season, my wingers (as my worst rated players) have been unreal, truly average players in jon morcillo and juan artola, plahinh them as actual wingers further back on attack does bits as often artola will cross for a morcillo tap in and the other way round
This is how Pep Guardiola unlocked Raheem Sterling’s full potential
He could win more medals than Michael Phelps if he was at the olympics
How about inverted wingers on support? With a number 10 and without?
I can't seem to get anything out of my inside forward on attack in FM23. He either goes to the byline and loses the ball or he runs at an impossible angle towards the goalkeeper trying to thread it through the eye of a needle. Do a video on getting the best out of your IF(A) (especially in a wide 433), what you do against teams who want to park the bus all game, keeping in mind defensive stability for your configurations.
Rayane Bounida: remember the name 🔥
ive seen a few youtubers rock the two striker 1 winger formation, whats up with that?
my 4-4-2 narrow diamond laughs at this entire video
How do I stop having a waterlogged pitch
My wingbacks always end up with a lot of assist and a few goals never had any luck with wingers scoring not even inside forward or inverted wingers
I always play with one Winger and one Inverted Winger or Inside Forward and both score more than 20 goals each season
I can agree with wingers scoring double digit goals. My dundalk winger has scored 23 while my striker has scored 20
Hello. Can i use this informations in FM20 as well?
@Zealand Hi. Short question please. Let's say I'm looking to use IFs, should I look to buy players with the same preferred foot as the side they are playing on - left side-left foot - or opposite foot - left side-right foot (as I would use for an IW)?
You could do both but usually I do opposite foot to side
@@tmlarkynado7604 Thank you for advise!

Struggling for efficiency with my wingers, is it still a standard practice to play a winger on support with the wing/full back on attack and vice versa on the other side on a for example 4231 or 4141
It's still viable, but easy to exploit defensively.

Why am I watching this after I had 3 wingers score double digits last season
My wingers always end up scoring 10-25 goals a season.. Its strange though I normally have wingers who are poor at heading but score more headers than they scould. Like Dan James scoring 10 headers a year bizare
I’ve managed to get Vinicius Junior and David Neres both to 20+ Goals and 10+ Assist in the premier league this season

Advanced Playmaker, Inverted Winger or Inside Forward with great vision + Raumdeuter in a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 is so damn lethal, OOF.
This is how you do not do SEOs .
Someone recommended me this channel for FM and when I searched on you tube, I am getting some video recommendations about New Zealand's right winger party (Labour party).
You would ideally want youtube bombard you auto suggestions of your channel
Inside forward, that’s all you need
Sooo i have a question for all thr FM vets out there,is there some specific thing that I need to do to get less injuries, cause for the past 2 years (in game) i just keep getting injuries at key spots in my team and its really hindering the squad ability to performe in games, (i know it doesn't relate to the topic of the vid but I just need a lil help)
You're probably using a high intensity tactic like gegenpressing
Couple that with not rotating some players and there you go they get injured
the best wing role is Raumdeuter. Convince me otherwise.
at one of my saves, i had this 4-3-3 Wide with 3 AP (1 mid, 2 Wide).
TL ; DR bad experiment
I play with RM & LM on winger roles so video doesn’t fully apply to me but it’s Z, say no more!!
I wish I had the brainwaves that Zealand has in his head, this knowledge is 🤯
Never really had an issue with wingers scoring. My wingers virtually always end up scoring at least 10 or 20+ no matter the role they are in.
IMO if your wingers will score just like your attacker has to do not with their roles, but the movement and mentality of the rest of the team.
hi there folks
It called "halfspace", Zea. Its Guardiola invention.
It's not his invention at all.
My problem is that I've made a Wolves save and my winger (of Course) is Adama Traore, and you guys know how he is. And everytime I see my highlights, Adama always has the ball and runs past everyone. The problem is that, he has no finishing and shoots it wide , he scores sometimes yes, but mainly fails. All I want is to use Adama as a crossing/passing machine, cause my striker is always alone in the box when adama runs past everyone, but he doesnt cross or pass, and that irritates me, cause I added the instruction to (cross more Often) but adama doesnt do nothing. I can have 20/30+ goals every season if adama just sweats it to my striker like in FIFA, but he is a ball hog player who wants to do it all Alone.
Somente help.
basically it's Adama style, it reflects the way he plays in real life, the only thing that you could do is to sell him and replace with someone appropriate

I think it's on fm. In previous iterations wingers NEVER square the ball for the most open of tap-ins. Now they started to do this but not near enough, considering big chunk of modern game goals are tap-ins getting served from the wider areas
@@user-jp3hc4ux4e I tried that too bro, I even made my team instructions to "early crosses" just to try it but it wasnt working. Im experimenting with new táctics and instructions just to see the results but yeah, maybe adama is not that type. I sell him or adapt him more as a finisher winger
