I've tried Goofy on my surfboard but it doesn't feel right.

    Can we talk about the use of the rear arm in combination with your compressing and extending of the body. I notice when you are pumping you swing your rear arm up and slightly behind as you extend and then over the top and forward/down as you transition to compression, in almost a front crawl type motion. I've found this is quite an effective body dynamic for pumping on the surf skate as its quite an easy que for the rest of your body to follow, plus it also helps to make you keep your shoulders squarer to where you are going rather than trailing your rear shoulder behind. Its something I'm going to focus on more in the surf.

    Your video is really great and explains really well how to pump, why and where to do it on the wave. Brilliant. You say that we should better watch videos with riders surfing the same way / side. Unfortunately I am goofy while you are regular. Have you ever thought about having your videos mirrored (video editing option 😉) and providing a "goofy version"? That would be so much useful for goofy riders. Cheers!

    Please talk about when to stop pumping and when to do a maneuver. What do you see in the section that tells you to pump and when to stop pumping for speed? I see so many people pump themselves right off waves instead of cutting back to the pocket. I'm guilty of it too.

    • @JohnCarrFitness
      @JohnCarrFitness Před 4 lety

      Every wave is different, You usually pump for speed in these 2 scenarios. 1. You need to get around a section. 2. You need to generate speed. If you don't have to do either of those then its time to start attacking the lip.

  • @pierswoo76
    @pierswoo76 Před 4 lety +1

    Amazing content top notch advice bro, although I fail to see how those carver boards help with surfing, looks like a fun toy but surely if you cant get in the ocean due to being landlocked etc your better off spending your time keeping your fitness up by surf specific swim training in a pool ie head up front crawl so when you get back in the ocean at least your still somewhat surf fit?

    • @surfnshowreviews7777
      @surfnshowreviews7777  Před 4 lety +3

      Piers Woodford If you haven’t tried a Carver then you need too. Very similar movements in compressing and extending and it’s an excellent tool to sharpen your surfing. I agree with swimming and staying fit but swimming and other sports don’t help your surfing technique much.

  • @sebastianroyer3047
    @sebastianroyer3047 Před 3 lety +2

    Hey Noel thanks so much for these. I picked up a carver recently and have been really enjoying applying you and Nick Carroll’s surf training tips on it. After around 10 days of being pretty into it and going 10 mins at a time a few times a day my lower back gave out pretty fantastically. Is there a likely culprit in form that you’ve noticed leads to lower back issues with the carver training?

    • @surfnshowreviews7777
      @surfnshowreviews7777  Před 3 lety

      Sebastian Royer Never heard of anyone having this problem. Maybe going 10 minutes a day is too much for your body at first. I think going easy at first is best.... remember your using new muscles and to work them hard can cause soreness, cramping, tightness. I do light stretching before surfing or Surfskating so I don’t get sore or hurt too. Sorry to hear about your back.... get better quickly.

    Very nice explanation.
    When you are getting speed in frontside wave, do you go rail to rail? 4:25 minute.
    Because you do it with your skate after and in a footage of a flat sección, but you say that yo set your inside rail, in a non flat wave and it looks that you don’t go rail to rail, only compression and extension

    • @surfnshowreviews7777
      @surfnshowreviews7777  Před 4 lety +2

      Xabier xabi Mostly the inside rail surfing on a wave on your front side down the line. When you skate on a flat street it’s rail to rail. If you skate a cement bank it’s more like surfing a wave with mostly your inside rail and not your heel side rail on your front side. Skating a bank... when you go down your board is in a neutral state as gravity pulls you down.

  • @sheldonvideos
    @sheldonvideos Před 4 lety +2

    Hi Noel, whats going on with your weight distribution between front and back feet when you pump? I notice when come out of compression your back heel lifts. What happens in the moments before this, especially in the double pump bottom turn, are you driving off your back foot inside rail? (ie what weight distribution split between from front and back foot during extension at about 4:27 to 4:28 in this video).
    Also for viewers watching on chrome there is an extension tool called" mirror tube". Awesome for us goofy's to watch you surf right foot forward. Yew from Oz!

    Stoked to see you do a technique series Noel, been a fan of your board reviews and I can easily see you excelling in this area too! I have a question though, how do you get to the bottom of the wave from that athletic compression stance @4:40? Does that stance alone get you to the bottom or is there more to it such as subtle weight adjustments with toes, heels and rails? (Like a mini weight shift to outside rail?) Basically, what areas of the shortboard are you engaging in the wave to get it to go to the bottom from the high line once you're in that stance?

    If you'd allow me to share some humble feedback, I'd tell you that I'd be very happy to pay the USD 5 a month should the classes not require the carver equip. I understand its awesome to have but as of this moment I cant get my hands on one. What I mean is that you put 2 obstacles for me to get acess to the content 1- payment 2- equipment. And in the middle of the pandemic those are not prioritized for me to get around. Anyway I understand how awesome it is to be able to learn from you, I deeply admire your style and the way you articulate your speech. Much love brother.

      I understand these are hard times.... the Carver Surf Skate makes it easy to build new habits and I know they are expensive. You don't have to use one to apply what I am showing you in each tutorial... just do it when you go surfing. Most Surfers don't surf every day so the Carver Surf Skate enables them to work on it even if all they have is 5-10 minutes a day to practice. Subscribing to our Patreon for $5.00 is the only way it makes sense for my brother Aarron and I to give of our time and talents to make each episode. We both have full time jobs and family's so doing these extra tutorials on top of our Surfboard reviews takes a ton of our time..... not to mention answering all of the questions from our community. Surf n' Show requires full time hours now.... hopefully when this covid-19 crap is over things will turn around and you can afford to get a Carver and join us. Cheers

      Brett Weeks Yes it takes a bit... sometimes the board feels like it’s going to slide out without that Thruster Pivot fin. Hang there though... you get the hang of it and the speed and release in a Quad is addicting. Get a good set of Pivot Quads.

    Hey I’m curious, with such an extensive quiver, how do you even choose which board to bring out on a given day? I know every board has its own purpose but with the amount I’ve seen on the show, there’s got to be dozens. I’m a Florida surfer, so swell isn’t a common occurrence, so picking which board I want to use is often a difficult task.

    I feel like skating has messed up my foot placement while surfing. When I pop up I naturally place my feet too close together and I'm standing both feet on the back half of the board. It's like putting on the brakes. I have to really think about putting my front foot in the right spot while popping up cause it doesn't happen naturally. That's my biggest problem right now.

    • @surfnshowreviews7777
      @surfnshowreviews7777  Před 3 lety +1

      Stretch out your stance on your Carver. When your paddling on your surfboard make a effort to be way forward on your board so when you pop up you will be more centered or forward.

    Noel. I don't have a ton of time or the climate to get out on a board regularly. I don't want to spend allot of $$ upfront and just want to see if I can make it work with what I got. I have an old deck kicking around - it's about 40 inches. Do you think that would work if I just picked up the carver trucks and put them on that deck?

      @patrickdykmans7384 Před 4 lety +2

      I have a 34 inch sector 9 and a carver, i bought the trucks for the sector and the main thing i would tell you is the clearance between the wheels and deck. You need a bunch of spacers? between the truck and deck otherwise the wheel is going to bite it when you carve. Those extra inches might be an issue for how tight a turn you can pull, but imo its worth it to get the feeling. I for one can vouch for the impact it can have on your surfing, it opens your eyes on what you have to do on a wave at any given moment. It just clicks

    • @surfnshowreviews7777
      @surfnshowreviews7777  Před 4 lety +1

      @@patrickdykmans7384 I agree... it will be about the spacers needed to keep the trucks from rubbing. I believe you get the spacers needed to use the Carver C7 or CX Trucks when you buy them from Carver.

      @@surfnshowreviews7777 yes, you do get a couple, but for that long of a board you need to really dig those rails so a couple more will come handy. The ones you get Allan are a bit rubbery, and special size to the truck, so you might not be able to use the ones you have on your board, but you could improvise. Good luck!

      I stuck a YOW surfskate converter on an old longboard and cut the deck down a little bit, it works brilliantly. It’s definitely possible to convert an existing skateboard deck with the right trucks/converter, at the end of the day it’s just a piece of plywood.
