  • Blue Eye Samurai is an amazing masterpiece, one of Netflix's newest shows that absolutely stunned me when I first saw it. Beautiful, exciting, and just generally great all around. But what stood out to me was that the villain of the show is one of the best I've seen in recent memory.
Abijah Fowler is an amazing character, a pure evil SOB who still manages to have a little depth to him. A perfect case study in how enthralling a pure evil villain can be.

Abijah is what I’d call Capitalist Frollo

      Make her despicable &
      mizu look good but
      I ended up liking Fowler
      & Disliking mizu.

Abijah is my favorite character in the whole thing. Also helps that Kenneth Branagh is a favorite actor of mine, the mans done a lot of Shakespeare and classic actor training so seeing him in this was a very pleasant surprise

Who would've thought that hair changing from bleache blond to ginger could make a man turn so evil

I love the sheer arrogance of offering to do a favor for God. Such a great scene.

That is the most subtle irish accent I have ever heard. Holy crap, I wouldn't have heard it if you hadn't mentioned coming from Ireland

It comes out more when I'm speaking to other Irish people. Or it's really obvious whenever I say certain words like 'Dublin.'

While I agree it would be interesting if Fowler turned out to be Mizu's dad, I unfortunately get the feeling the show is going a different direction with it. I honestly wouldn't be surprised in the slightest if they pulled a twist where it turns out none of the four men was her father, or even that it was her mother who was white instead.

I feel like there is some validity to the argument that sometimes pure evil villains can end up boring, zelda skyward sword has both girhahim and demise who are both pure evil villains yet one is remembered fondly while the other is only remembered for his impact on the lore, granted I feel like this was from an older era were people weren't really trying to create captivating villains as much since as long as they can fill the role of big evil obstacle in the way they were good enough(though there are still modern movies and games were the villain just kinda feels like an afterthought because the story needed an antagonist but they didn't have any good ideas for one)
Basically a pure evil villain typically needs to either be entertaining in an over the top way or threatening for them to work

I have never had an issue with a villain being evil for the sake of it. Oh sure a sad backstory might make you pity them. Sympathize even. But ultimately, what they do from that backstory determines who they’ll become. There’s always a choice to not give into that darkness. But they choose it anyway. Often because it gives them power, charisma, ambition.
Some are just born rotten. It happens. They can have everything and still turn out bitter, desiring more.
In the end, the villain serves as an obstacle for the main character to overcome. A hurdle that forces them to change, to get stronger, to become wiser. There’s nothing wrong with that.
Villains like Joker and Sidious are beyond any redeeming qualities but people still love them because they’re pure evil.
