I have been in love with Cocteau Twins since 1986 when a girl on my bus took her headphones off and put them on my ears. I thought I was in heaven, lol. Oomingmak with and without vocals is one of my favorites as well as Bluebeard. HOLV is a bit commercial but still a great song.

this is one of those songs you HAVE to listen to at least a few times in a row before you die.. makes you feel nostalgia, bitter sweet meloncholic feelings, a longing for a past you didnt really have or are viewing thru rose tinted glasses.. it brings many good and many bad feelings to the surface when you listen to this song a few times late late at night... makes you evaluate your life and the decisions you made and the experiences youve had..

Honestly - this is such a great description. I couldn’t quite put it into words. It kinda knocked the breath out of my lungs when I heard this song the other day. It knew me. Familiar. I was born in 1991. So although I would not have remembered when this song came out - but the emotional tie I have to this song is indescribable. Lol like what is happening!!??

HOLV is in my top 10 albums from the 90's, and possibly in my top 10 of all time. Takes me back to the days of lava lamps and chilling with my girlfriend and buddies in a cloud of smoke, in the early hours of the morning. Good times, less complicated. Try the album called Treasure. It's the best of Cocteau Twins, in my opinion. She sings in an invented tongue, more chacateristical from their early work. Very climatic and full of sound textures. A lyrical athmosphere that will drive you into a dreamlike landscape.

He even listened to the album Treasure by CT while he was getting ready for his marriage and he described it as the most romantic sound he had ever heard. The Cocteau Twins' singer, Liz Fraser, gave one of the most spectacular and idiosyncratic vocal performances I've ever heard on a cover version of Tim Buckley's "Song to the siren" by This Mortal Coil. The music on the track is very minimal indeed but it's all about the voice. Highly recommended. Also, I note that you've reacted to a lot of Genesis/Gabriel songs but don't appear to have done Gabriel's "Game without frontiers", which was a top 10 hit in the UK in 1980.

Cocteau Twins are not about lyrics, but asmophere and a very creative way of displaying a mystique. I highly recommend listening to The Moon And The Melodies (colaboration with Harold Budd), Blue Bell Knoll, Victorialand, Treasure and the Love's Easy Tears EP. Also after Blue Bell Knoll they started having a more mainstream approach to their sound, which is not a bad thing, but it takes away a lot of their magic

Totally agree, especially for "Love's Easy Tears" EP which is just great. Same for "Echoes in a Shallow Bay" EP. So interesting and experimental. Actually, "Garlands" is the only album I find inferior, sounds a bit cold and boring and Elizabeth's voice is not as great as in the next albums. I feel very surprised that so many people recommend it.

@@cuckoofan Yeah Love's Easy Tears is easily my favorite record from them. It just has these chord progressions and production that makes it sound from outer space. Garlands is their darkwave aproach. I love it as well, but it's definitely not dream pop lol

@@tokenofdevotion I guess it would be very difficult for me to choose a favorite piece amongst what they've done, everything (except "Garlands) sounds brilliant and moving to me. I just love "HoLV", but "Victorialand" is so special, and "Blue Bell Knoll" definitely impresses me vocally. Some EPs, as I said already, are just as great as some albums, and there are some songs on other EPs, or unreleased tracks like "the High Monkey-Monk" which are incredible pieces of work. Cocteau Twins was a unique band and I really miss them!

Just about everything on 4AD is really good especially if you like goth/shoe-gaze. There's a great compilation album called "Lonely as an Eyesore," to introduce you to some of the best 4AD bands like: Cocteau Twins, Xymox, and my favorite goth band Dead Can Dance. There are several epic movies that feature the voice of Lisa Gerrard, who sings for DCD.

This is part of a subgenre called "shoegaze". If you liked this one, try a few from Slowdive. Sugar from the Pill from their newer album is good, as well as Alison from Souvlaki. Also My Bloody Valentine's song Only Shallow is another classic shoegaze tune.

Most people remember Rehab, but songs like Back to Black and Valerie are 100x better and more interesting. Not sure how and why everyone keeps digging up this album and song. Songs like Lazy Calm, Pandora (for Cindy) and Serpentskirt are way more interesting and representative of the genre (IMO).

Love this song. Glad you picked it (though they are one of those bands whose music I only enjoy in small doses.) The music is just there to support the singer's (Elizabeth Fraser) voice which is the lead instrument. Read up on her approach to writing songs. She uses a lot of nonsense and non-words simply because they fit the song/melody. And she intentionally sings it in such a way that you really can't understand what she's singing. :-)
Big props for mentioning Blue Nile - I've got their Walk Across the Rooftops album in my permanent collection.
Here's a suggestion - Thomas Dolby - The Flat Earth. I'm sure you've heard of him and his commercial hits, but his deeper cuts are much better than any of those IMHO.
Lastly, there is/was a record label named 4AD - check out their earlier catalog. I believe they produced this group as well, or had some overlap with the artists but they've got some really interesting obscure/experimental bands. This Mortal Coil and Wolfgang Press being my favorites among them.
    Thanks, JP!
