      It's a small car, easy to drive and maintain - these are elements that appeal to a lot of women AND men that are not necessarily "sports car" people... maybe a spiritual replacement for the old VW Rabbit Cabriolet. That said, Miatas also appeal to hardcore sports car people, who tend to be mostly (but not always) guys given the capabilities of the car to hustle. I autocrossed and tracked an NA Miata extensively in the mid to late 1990s, and despite owning much more powerful and capable cars since I missed the simple pleasure of driving a slow car fast; I recently bought a NB1 as a "Sunday morning car" but find myself driving it as much as I drive my 997.2 Carrera S. It makes me happy! :)

    WE have had one for twenty years,got it for the wife,she drove it daily for 15 years,got her a new car and I inherited it.Had virtually no problems,have replaced the roof,radiator,and clutch slave cylinder, all the rest was general maintenance.Ever time i think about replacing it for a newer model,I get in it and go for a long quick drive go home park it and the urge to spend unnecessary amount of money goes.They really are a great little car.

      I bought my ‘99 Miata with 115,000 miles. Previous owner replaced the radiator. I replaced the brake discs and pads which were completely shot, and all the clutch hydraulics recently after the slave cylinder wore out. That was OEM if not completely original. I had a shop complete the slave clutch installation because one of the bolts was seized, but other than that all the work has been done by me, and I’m a total novice. Miatas are great platforms for learning to work on cars.

    I have a 2000 nb in Japan, 32,000km on the clock. 14 inch wheels. The steering is great ! It is not a high speed car, but that is not why I bought it. I whizz around the country lanes of central Honshu, just like I did in England years ago (not a roadster then though). People seem to worry a lot about which Miata to buy based on looks, but you don't look at the outside of it when you are driving, and the point of it is to drive it. And it drives much better with small wheels, max. 15 inch I would say.

I thought to myself I wish there was still a car like back in the day where you could pop the hood and lay eyes and in most cases hands on anything you needed to work on. Then I remembered my old Miata. Picked up a 2013 last month. I tell people it's the greatest go kart ever made. Not hard to find one with low miles and in good shape as many were weekend fun cars. What was hard was to find a manual but at 58 it doesn't matter that much to me anymore.

    One other advantage of the engine being more toward the rear. The heater warms your feet very nicely.
    I drive mine in Canada and in the spring and fall. I can still have the top down and drive around with the heater blowing (less than maximum no less) and stay nice and warm.
    Well, except for the top of my head. But, seriously, the heater on full blast nearly melts your running shoes.

I'm looking forward to getting it into daily driver shape. I've only driven it around a parking lot as I'm still working on it, but I can tell how much fun these cars are on a race track. The placement and feel of the controls is just great for spirited driving.

      I have a 2003 SE - - With the special wheels, special color ("strato blue mica" - - amazing), 6-speed, etc. I'll never sell it. As an aside, Mazda changed a few minor things for the 2nd half of the "Gen 2" Miatas. Yours and mine have things like a better center console for holding drinks. It made the 1999 model shown here even more "perfect."

    Bill have u driven the new Miata? They are gorgeous machines but I have never driven one. Now I had a 5spd protege and it was a hoot to drive so I get it. Mazda has the zoom zoom.

      I've driven it, it still drives like a Miata but the RF is more rigid with the top on it. Just think of the driving characteristics of a Miata but with a modern flavour to it.
      There isn't a lot of storage space compared to the NB by the way.

    This 1.8 NB MX5 is my favourite shape MX5 - BUT as I'm now over 70 years old, I own the NC with power retractable hard top, I still love all MX5s, but age requirements win in the end. I do like the ND soft top shape, but the RF model takes the MX5 away from the open top feeling.

    Opinions on a 99 nb with 45k original miles for 5k usd.. is it a good first sports car?? I live in an area with mostly straight roads and I'm worried it will be too slow for the straight roads and freeways.

    • @speedcanada1
      @speedcanada1 Před 4 lety +2

      If it really has no rust then it's likely a good buy. GREAT first sports car, but not the most fun for long high-speed highway runs. If you take back roads it's perfect.
