- 4.9.19 | by Adam Balhetchet | The video shows the trailer on fire prior to the arrival of firefighters, water on the fire, checking for small pockets of fire, two civilians who tried extinguishing the fire with a fire extinguisher, police on the scene, and firetrucks leaving. It happened around 8 am Tuesday, at 86th St & Fort Hamilton Parkway, in the Bay Ridge section of Brooklyn.

I am a professional Firefighter in Germany since 12years and work as Firefighter & platoon leader, what i`ve seen here is Nothing but just ludicrous. One unit (2 Firefighters) professionally equipped with SCBA to prevent cancer, using a rapid attack hose with an AFF foam would have done the Job as we use to do in Germany in less than 5mins., without even destroying the trailers surface. Absolutely wrong aproach, to many FF inside the danger Zone, carrying a bunch of useless Tools for that kind of incident and so on.....Leader shouldn`t be that close, specially staying in the smoke, here we go...Cancer again!!! To much to just write done what all went wron on that Mission......Sometimes it feels, they are still living in Hollywood and need to seek for attention. Anyways…..
Respect to our Brothers in the US for their service, but they would have 75% less death rate if they would change their tactics and way they work….
As a professional firefighter for over thirty years, both in the UK and Australia, I have to agree with your comments. Well said.
As a firefighter in the US for 11 years the fatality rate deals with many things not just tactics and SCBA usage. You should be careful when making blanket statements. as for my department this would not have gone this way either. we use SCBA on just about every fire and one engine would most likely handle it. As for pulling the deck it depends on the situation whether we would have or not.
first of all, I have a lot of respect for your job! I live in Belgium were the fire brigade is also quite professional. I'm not a firefighter but I agree with you that this looks not right.. In MY opinion, european firefighters are better trained, equipped, and would have extinguished this within 5 minutes. so yeah.... thanks for saving our lives!
all dutch firefighters would agree....good comment.
Dominik Manni Groetsch Finally real firefighter’s commenting respectfully instead of internet chiefs. This is quality comments!
trailer fire, let's get our priorities stright: first equipment to grab will be approximately 437 ceiling hooks, halligan tools and some hammers.
But where are the chainsaws...? No " venting "...?
don't forget the little hand water hose. should have grapped a water pistol instead.
Doc Daneeka Each person on a truck company is assigned to a number of tooks he/she needs to equip upon arriving to a scene. It's all department policy, not something the firefighters decide themselves.
WTF they took that hole thing apart 😂😂😂
In Holland and other European countries this would be a one engine job. 2 attack lines fed directly from the tank containing 1,500 of 2,500 liters of water. 2 masked up fire fighters killing the fire and the other ones staying out of harms way and sorting out water supply in case of.
This is the perfect example of why firefighters die young. The authorities provide breathing apparatus sets yet they fail to use them. Guys.. I was a full time fireman for 31 years and our crews always wore BA here in the UK. Nearly all my old colleagues who couldn’t be bothered to wear a set are dead, mainly from various cancers.
Especially burning tires. Extremely toxic. Where was the captain who should have corrected this failure while this was going on?
Vehicle fires are just as, if not more toxic then structure fires!!! Wear you BA's fellas if not for you for your families.
Bubba John Then let them. Their own decision to make.
Totally agree. It's a shame to see professional firefighters in one of the worlds biggest cities not wearing their protective gear properly! We have so much nice gear to use but instead we are standing like a bunch of morons IN the smoke.. In Sweden we have come so much further with this matter, hope to see improvement in the US soon...
Is this normal in America? Shocking procedures, should have BA on before anywhere near the risk area!!
Your department has outfitted you with the very best PPE possible. I have been on the job for 21 years and here it’s a big “No No” to not wear the proper PPE depending on the situation. There are numerous men with bottles but the person on the nozzle has nothing but bunker gear? The carcinogens he inhaled is just reckless! Lung problems are imminent in your future if this is the FDNY’s protocol. Just want fellow firefighters to be safe!
Nobody gives a fuck about how long you've been on the job. Other departments will operate they way the operate.
Don't talk shit Bill, they are clowns.
Ever hear of uphill and upwind in your 21 years on “the job”?
That’s what happens when the brakes on your trailer don’t release and you drive around anyway 😂🤯
You can see the skid marks on the right side which were caused by the brake drums locked up, then overheating. When they get hot enough, the tires catch fire like these did. Cop should have cited him for 'driving while stupid!!'
The best experience is when you hear the sirens in the background. You know they are coming !
You hope they are ! And not going else where.
In new york it still can take a while since the traffic is insane.
I'm confused, an engine company could have easily handled this alarm. 5 firefighters from a truck company taking ceiling hooks, entry tools while just standing around instead of pulling a hose line. WTF.
Additional manpower. What if it was a garbage truck fire and they had to cut the rear open? Happened in my district.
FDNY also has to take into account for neighboring exposures. A call to 911 comes in with a vehicle on fire. FDNY doesn’t know if the materials inside the truck are hazardous, if people are trapped, if a second vehicle caught fire, or a business next to the vehicle. They have the resources to send a heavy response. And the firefighters grab their hooks like it’s second nature. They rather stand FAST with their gear and equipment rather than trying to hunt down their tools if the fire all of a sudden gets out of control.
exactly
and the one FF with the handling doesn't have an SCBA....
"hey this isnt completely broken yet!... pass me that saw!"
Wood deck trailer with fire below. It needed to be opened up for access. Cant crawl under
Lol
"You called 911 right?"
"No buddy, you want to call, call."
Top quality footage ! Thanks for posting!
thank you
I cant believe how good your camera works. Clearest I've ever seen

@@LoudlabsNYC wow
I wonder if the cops gave the truck driver a ticket for parking in front of a hydrant! 😉
Randy of Locksley meter maid did after fdny left the scene ! Rat bastards !
Thank you loud for the upload.
Thank you NYFD firefighters for all that you do.
We Love you.
Atlanta Ga.
As a firefighter myself I completely understand that you're prepared to risk a lot if it really matters, but for what? The trailer wasn't even loaded with anything, the worst case scenario here would have been a tire blowing up or some trash catching fire, so why not take the time and play it safe?
Even a fully involved car fire usually doesn't require more than one engine, one hose and two FFs wearing BA.
Guys, please don't put your health on the line if it's not even worth it!
Truck driver probably dragged that trailer with locked wheels for miles before it caught fire.
Clouldve also had a flat and not known. I've seen it before.
He’d have felt the tugging on that if that was the and need to hand his licence back in
I would guess an overheated hub bearing
WOW!!!! guy putting out the fire doesn't have an air pak on but 4-6 guys behind him does
Yup, noticed it as well.....WC claim fodder
mander64. None of them are wearing breathing apparatus. Yes they are carrying them but none actually using them. I write from the UK and if this was here in Britain they would be forced to wear BA by the O.I.C. These guys on the film will one day have a date with an oncologist!
Bubba John Nice. Restricting people from doing what they want. It's just a bit smoke, not like you are inside a closed room with it.
@@lukasahs6064 You have no idea what your talking about! Car fires are extremely toxic! Most departments now require you to full wash down and clean your gear and hoses after every fire.
The 1st firefighter to lightly spray fire with small extinguisher, was pre treating the fire. Lol
I asked myself if a FDNY FF just tried to put out a tire fire with a bona fide water gun. Had to been an officer telling him to go do it as a gag and he had to listen cause officer.
Is it the all rookie crew?
Hose man should have his SCBA on to avoid those toxic gases from the tires.
So the FDNY still runs by the old “real men dont use a SCBA”? 10 guys there packed out and the second on scene wearing no packs is the ones stretching for attack...
I like the city bus waiting for them to put it out and move the truck rather than detour around the block
Brakes hanging up, super heating the linings and drums start to glow. Wheel seals now fail and bearing lube leaks out on hot drum and poof. Seen a few wheel fires in my career of being a mechanic.
see the dual deep black drag marks, they drug that set of duals awhile. guess they do not teach touching the hubs of your trailer after you stop.
*Excellent work colleagues!!!! Greetings from Firefighters in Russia!!!!*
Have a look at the job... see what you’re dealing with, quickly determine the right tool for the job... in this case put some water on the fire at the earliest opportunity. No need to be lofting all that kit to the side of some tyres which are on fire.
Love how the truck Co came off with air packs and the Engine guys didn’t. A little ass backwards there..
Apparently clean breathing air is overrated..
R G It is since compressed air is more difficult to breath than normal air.
MintTablett nonsense. It whould be an overpressure mask and so evn lighter to breath.
MintTablett Seriously, if you can’t breathe using your BA then you have no business being a firefighter especially if you have issues when you’re not tired and under stress. I can hardly tell a difference if any at all. The cool air from the bottle is also a lot nicer then outside air. You must be really out of shape or have never worn an SCBA before. I highly doubt that you are a firefighter especially after reading all of your other comments with different excuses to defend these guys. It's obvious you have no clue what you are talking about.
FDNY still have awesome staffing levels. In Toronto Canada, you would have had only 3 firefighters working here (2 from the Engine and one from the Ladder), not including the 2 Officers.
3 FF' 2 officers and 2 drivers in a way is a lot here in my department yes it volunteer we run most bad calls with about that much.
In Holland this would be a one truck alarm. Driver/pumpoperator, truck commander and in some cases 2 fire fighters. Masked up and with 2 attack lines fed directly from the truck carrying 1,500 to 2,500 liters of water and it's job done in no time. A check with a heat sensitive camera to make sure and it's back to the station ready for the next alarm.I still can't figure out though why a fire like this needs a ladder.
Buen trabajo ! Felicitaciones !
They can be glad, I'm not their boss...
Well, "chief", tell us how to do it!
That which the fire didn't destroy, the firemen did.
Simple fire nothing difficult. Even a beginner fireman could do it.
0000008 01 facts they had two trucks and like ten guys for that?!
@@Gabriel.A.A The call likely came in as a truck trailer on fire. That could be anything from an empty flatbed to a 40ft curtain sider. People tend not to be very specific when making emergency calls.
You guys, that ladder truck carried a few objects that the situation needed and the engine truck did not have, that’s why that ladder truck showed up.
NYC Fire engines looks so sick and huge :-D
I like how the truck guys had air packs on and the engine guys didnt and the officer didnt have his jacket even button up but had the radio though
GIve some rookies something to do let them practice!
These firefighters define the word “thorough”. Impressive to say the least!
If a trailer was attached to my hundred thousand dollar dump truck and caught fire I think I'd release the trailer and drive away from it.
John, he tried to unhook the trailer but the smoke and heat got to him.
too smokey and too hot, not worth getting cancer over a stupid truck that's insured
What actually started the fire and kept it going? Also, what are the six foot poles each had, and what do they do?
Well, anything from a discarded cigarette or cigar to overheated brakes could have been the origin.
The poles are called Pike poles and are normally used for pulling ceilings at a fire to ‘open up’ and extinguish pockets of fire hidden in the ceilings and walls.
They come in many various sizes as there are many ceilings of varying sizes. Over the years there may be ceilings added to the ceilings above, making the task that much harder.
The poles actually have many uses though as illustrated in this video.

I knew when I asked, I would find out! I really appreciate the depth of your reply. It's so interesting! Thanks, Richard.
Never released his trailer brakes I would imagine
How does that happen?
Nice great work
Why destroy the deck? Makes absolutely no sense.
Cary Huff to check for fire extension
Das muss mir mal einer erklären...warum stehn da 5 (!) Mann mit Brecht-Werkzeug??
How many fireman to put out a trailer fire? 😂
flykj factssss, there were like ten guys and two trucks. They only needed 5 guys at most
FDNY protocol for dispatching to a vehicle fire is to send one engine and one ladder.
@CHSims Maybe DFNY should revise their protocol. In Europe this is a one engine fire. No point at all in sending a ladder/aerial platform as well.
@@charlesmallo Oh God, yes...let's hear how Europe does it. Europe knows about firefighting, yep.
@@charlesmallo Ever consider Europe and New York are two TOTALLY DIFFERENT places? Fuck off
So I have 2 questions. 1: Why is a ladder truck being deployed to something like this? 2: Why do they send 2 crews at all? I mean, I'm not a firefighter, but this looks like a little over the top for a burning trailer?
This is New York so of course it's over the top but I do think they have a reason. From my understanding (this may be wrong but makes sense) is they respond the engine and truck in case there is someone trapped in the vehicle (I know this wasn't a vehicle but it probably just went out as a generic vehicle fire). Another reason could be for more tools so more ways to gain access to the car. Also probably because they just have a ton of units and can afford to send more than what is probably needed just in case it is something worse.
Most other departments in the US will respond only one engine with three or four firefighters on board, this is definitely not the norm.
Because it is better to have them and not need them than need them and not have them.
Gonna Have to agree with you on that one. I know my Officer would have issue with that. Be Safe out there.
No BA. Oncologists here we come 😥
ok
Did that trailer's driver really have to stop right next to a fire hydrant?
Are they even trained? Wtf are they doing.
Daan I take it you don’t know anything about firefighting do you?
@@JTaylor-pr6rf I take it neither do you.
Go join the department, dumbass and find out.
I can just imagine that dudes boss, "God dammit mother fucker Joe, this is the 4th truck this year that you've driven around that caught fire!".
Trailer brakes locked and trailer drags down road until tires burn.
Pack up brothers, not worth your life.
That's why the streets never get fixed
Why didn’t he disconnect the trailer?
are the breathing air bottles directly connected to the lungs ? ;-)first car at 2.22 on the spot, first serious extinguishing only after 4 minutes, that took too long.a lot of firemen are leaning on a stick, that is really useless.
one well-equipped fire truck with well-trained personnel had the job done in a matter of minutes.
That was a good on call reaction they got there quick status.
Good job they had 18,000 pike poles with them. Why does the city of New York bother buying SCBA sets for their firefighters, they never use them, why bother carrying that weight around for no reason? Nice to see they still managed to get some vertical ventilation holes cut.....
I'm not American, but I'm very proud of this country.
Dont be these firefighters are fucking stupid with this example not wearing SCBA this why they get cancer and money goes to waste becuase they think real men dont need to wear it
Trailer breaks were rubbing and caused friction, and WOOSH it went
Ben Meyer are you a truck driver?? Brakes dont just rub to start a fire. He probably didnt release his trailer brakes or a bad hub bearing got overheated due to lack of hub oil.
Do you think they got it after 6000 of water?
as a truckdriver, why the hell does he not disconnect and pullforward? Whats the truck to burn too?
He said he tried but it was too hot to go near.
Polovoy has a Destiny logo on his hat. Guardians are everywhere
They can buff that out...
4:44 destiny logo on back of helmet
Why did the driver not decouple the trailer !
why did so few firefighters come?
Much respect for the men and women fire fighters
"It might explode". There's always somebody at every fire yelling about it exploding. It doesn't work like that. Explosions occur in rare circumstances. Not when an empty trailer's tires are on fire
Someone's been watching too much TV.
Ok but the truck driver was there from the beginning the fire fighters took time to get there !
Why they send Tower Ladder on such a simple fire???
Car fires will automatically get one engine and one truck. The truck is the nearest regardless if it's an aerial or tower ladder.

Extra guys. The idea is to have extra guys you don't need instead of needing extra guys you don't have.
Hot brakes?
I never understand why people don’t immediately unhook when they realize the trailer is on fire, before it gets bad, that truck is worth a lot more than the trailer..
Extremely surprised that these FDNY guys aren’t wearing their BA’s.. First mistake ever I’ve seen them due ..
FDNY ....slow motion ?
Wow shes burning good catch.
Is that Rodney Dangerfield in the yellow reflective shirt?
brakes probably locked up
Good still photo at 5:04
They could easily put out the fire themself right?
Bad slack adjusters probably heated the brakes and spread to wheel seals oil then got the tire and it was all kinds lite by then.
In Europe, trucks need to have fire fire extinguishers on board. Im not a firefighter yet (about to become one), but to me it looks kind of wrong when 50% of the firement are holding useless tools (those sticks with hooks at the tip) and not even protect themself from breating in smoke. I have seen german firefighters taking out completely burning cars in half the time these guys needed just to take of some burning tires.
A lot of weird, excessive and unnecessary safety protocols here.. yet they just suck those smokes like it was a morning fog
Why didn't the truck driver have an extinguisher
what's an extinguisher gonna do , that first firefighter had an extinguisher too, it didn't even make a dent in that fire, there comes a certain point where it's out of your hands
good thing is theres a fire hydrant that could have been turned on
Great to see the FFs with the entry tools but a handling might have been a little more useful???
That's it mate walk to put out the fire,it was obvious they needed a hose from the start.Man it seems to be a norm in the US walk.
Seems like somebody forgot to release his trailer brakes.
FF Lin doing all the work! Ha... Nice job!
pyrocap b-136 firefighting foam in a 2- 2.5 gal water can would have put it out
Quietest dam firefighters I have ever seen did they have a fallout back at station and now not talking to each other.
Desy Moynes what is there to talk about? No grab assing
No wonder they all die of cancer, they initially tried to put it out with a water can WTF and then they finally got a hose out, imagine that & then no respiratory protection.
My god horrendous display as firefighters. I can comment as I am a firefighter and was shocked at what I just viewed
I love the smell of burning rubber in the morning !
Truck guys packed up...engines not so much.....
U.S firefighters looks like skaters with those big jackets
How many firefighters for just a trailer fire??? Isn't it too much??
No scba. How’s cancer feel
Okay, so the roles are reversed here I guess, all the guys off the truck had SCBA on, and all the guys off the Engine didn't lol.
Who else think cal fire , LA county fire deparment and ventura county fire deparment are the best put there
No breathing apparatus let's all breath in the chemicals thats why you have your B.A to don it any way good job guys we support you all 💯 % stay safe
Guess who completed their first day of fire training today
the Department send a ladder to fire from empty Trailer... WHY??? 7 Fighters standing and looking without any Activity... WHY??? One Firefighter had the Fire Hose on his Shoulder more than 10 Meters away from the Fire... WHY???
Trucks and engine always get called out for MVC/ fires. Auto dispatched. Even for a fender bender, you’ll get a truck comp(ladder trucks) them boys have more extrication equipment
That PW can ain’t gonna put out a tire fire!
Brakes locked up on the highway causing his tires to heat up and catch fire before he could get to a stop.
