    03.31.2019 | 4:00 PM | LONG BEACH - Firefighters extinguished an intense house fire and rescued several dogs in the process, Sunday evening.
    Authorities responded to multiple calls reporting a structure fire in the 1000 block of Nylic Court around 4:00 PM.
    Crews arriving on scene found heavy fire showing from the rear of a single-story home and initiated an aggressive fire attack.
    During their efforts to extinguish the blaze, crews freed a locked door allowing several trapped dogs to escape the fire.
    The dogs were later detained by good Samaritans.
    No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire is under investigation.

      I fucken hate that so much! Ive seen people pull out their phone and just start filming a person trapped inside a burning car.... Instead of helping. I wouldve helped but thankfully someone went to help the woman and it was at an intersection.
      I called 911 immediately and then started to film for documentation purposes.... Not for social media.

      But technically you are correct, they are cutting ventilation holes in the roof because the fire, heat, and gases are trapped in the attic. Those holes improve conditions so inside crews can work to extinguish the fire.

My mom's car got torched along with a bunch of belongings, some with sentimental value. There were cars parked about 50 ft away that melted. The guy that set it only got a few months in jail because he came forward and admitted he did it.

      @@mlambert1974 , when performed properly, and in concert with a simultaneous, interior, fire attack; allows excess heat and smoke to escape from an enclosed structure. This benefits any trapped occupants inside, as well as, the attack crew with visibility, and exposes interior crews from less heat, as it's ventilated much of the radiant heat out the enclosed space (the same heat that contributes to Backdrafts and Flashovers).
      However, rooftop ventilation, is becoming ever-increasingly, more- dangerous, because of the kind of lightweight materials they currently use in the construction of modern-day, roof truss systems.

      FreeMongooose what makes you think it’s not? You could see the ends of the truss right under the roof line.

    • @FreeMongooose
      @FreeMongooose Před 5 lety +3

      Richard Fernandez it’s an early 20th century bungalow, those are rafter tails that you can see under the eave line. They are conventionally framed homes, not lightweight. Another telltale sign of a conventional roof is the skip sheathing that you can see when they pull back the roofing of their vent hole. If this was a lightweight roof, it would be sheathed with OSB or plywood. Skip sheathing (boards laid across the rafters with gaps in between) is usually 1-by material and holds up better under fire conditions than plywood or OSB. This is a pretty strong roof to operate on.

      It allows heat and smoke out of the structure. This makes the environment inside a better work environment. Like taking the lid off of a hot pot.

      And also perhaps to prevent flashover and backdraft fire occuring (fire when without sufficient oxygen suddenly gets alot of oxygen and creates and explosion).

      What jcapen1 said. Only thing is, you have to coordinate with an interior attack team to get it right. If you don’t, you can and probably will just make things worse.
