"When you believe the work before you is the single piece that will forever define you, it's difficult to let it go. The urge for perfection is overwhelming. It's too much. We are frozen, and sometimes end up convincing ourselves that discarding the entire work is the only way to move forward." 🖤

    Takeaways:
    1. The video is a book report and discussion of Rick Rubin's book, "The Creative Act."
    2. The video focuses on one of the central motifs of the book, which is how Rubin builds a creative project from start to finish.
    3. Rubin takes the creative Muse very seriously, approaching his search for ideas and inspiration as a relationship with this unseen force.
    4. Rick describes our own ideas and point of view as emerging from deep inside of us and the momentum or motivation to create as being akin to the cycles of the natural world.
    5. The video also mentions the importance of being willing to commit oneself to doing everything one can to be better than they are now.
    At time: 03:59
    1. Creatives can catch small fragments of ideas and use them to attract more inspiration.
    2. The creative process involves both a mysterious, unknowable side and practical, formal processes.
    3. Establishing good habits and routines can provide a structure that allows for more freedom in creative expression.
    4. Environment and routine are crucial factors in accessing inspiration.
    5. The initial stage of the creative process involves open exploration without deadlines or constraints.
    At time: 07:59
    1. The next phase of cultivating ideas involves experimentation and allowing the seeds to take root naturally.
    2. It is important to relinquish control and not manipulate the ideas, but rather nourish them.
    3. The artist's work is to collect seeds, plant them, water them with attention, and see if they take root.
    4. This approach involves being open, listening, and being neutral without forming opinions.
    5. The purpose of a seed may be to propel us in a completely new direction, and the work reveals itself as we go. The mindset of creation at this stage involves being open, unjudgmental, and curious.
    At time: 12:03
    1. The crafting phase is the third phase of a project, which occurs after the seed code has been cracked and the project has a clear sense of direction.
    2. During the crafting phase, the project takes on a more solid form, and the focus shifts to building and applying skills to make the ideas a reality.
    3. This phase can be the longest period of the project and involves spending a lot of time with the work at hand, testing ideas, and allowing the project to morph and develop.
    4. It is important to remain open to discovery during this process and keep the project flexible enough to shift around and incorporate new ideas.
    5. The final stage of the crafting phase involves exploring all available options and achieving the project's full expression before closing it out.
    At time: 16:26
    1. Rick suggests that having a project deadline during the completion phase can be helpful and may not hurt the project.
    2. Many artists struggle with finishing and delivering their work due to the overwhelming urge for perfection and fear of the work defining them forever.
    3. To overcome this, Rick suggests detaching from the work and developing a healthy level of disregard for it during the final stage.
    4. This period can also be a great moment to start looking beyond the project and building something new and exciting.
    5. Embracing the unknown can lead to a healthier experience in life, as breakthroughs may come in unexpected ways or through iteration.
    At time: 20:15
    1. Rick's phases offer a slow and non-linear movement from open idea-catching to closed completion.
    2. The process involves distilling ideas and communicating their true essence to the audience.
    3. The audience's interpretation of the piece is not contingent on the artist's intended interpretation.
    4. The best art allows both the artist and audience to have their own experience.
    5. The video encourages viewers to check out Rick's book and a free newsletter for further discussion and thanks the community for watching.

Im a painter and the process of continuing things not being extremely sentimental or attached with each single piece one creates is something I learned from a painter I admire, and I can say it is a beautiful mindset to adapt. Whenever I paint or draw even before I’m done with the piece my mind is already onto the next one, because I know I’m going to paint thousands and thousands more paintings the growth and process I experienced from doing said painting or piece is what I’m focused on not so much the finished product.

This might not be relevant, but when I read your story, I couldn't help but think of a podcast I listened to the other week, where one of the speakers is a painter/illustrator, and discusses this exact thing also. Maybe the podcast won't hit in the same way for you, or feel a bit random, but I'll link it anyway as it feels like the guy on there is aligning with exactly your point open.spotify.com/episode/6Qv4iWM5fj5QAQ6FKEKOme

These ideas describe the creative process beautifully. It's a delicate dance, a pas de deux (ha, fancy!) between the narrative mind and direct experience. This is where, it seems to me, we all can go. And there are gargoyles at the gate. The thing is, not going through the gate doesn't look too promising, either. Fortunately, there are allies in unexpected places. And ultimately I'm drawn to the notion that love wrote this play, so... Let's do this! (And thank you, Rick Rubin, for sharing your take on things.)

Hope some of Rick's concepts could be taken over, but if you like his work, and can't translate too much in this video, I'd still recommend the book, or at least, don't let the video make you think there won't be anything in there for you. There's a load in this book, and I've returned back to it plenty now, so yeah, would still recommend. Thanks for taking the time to comment and add your piece.
