    1. Live life for awhile
    2. Don't watch or listen to anything creative...alot of times it seeps into your work unconsciously and u don't realize it til later
    3. Minimalism...if u can't do it at the most basic level with the most basic equipment...u can't really do it
    4. Don't rush...have a plan
    5. Be flexible with the vision...alot times artists don't want to get rid of some songs on projects because artists think everything is great because they created it...not always true...other songs might flow better with the overall theme

As an unknown artist who lives my life every day out of passion for music, this video was extremely inspiring, motivating, and reassuring. Many of these clips I’ve seen before, but in the context of this video, the commentary, the insight, everything about this 30 minute piece is a work of art in it of itself. Always appreciative of this channel and these videos, but for the current time in my life this video spoke volumes to me. Especially the Frank Ocean part, being in an artistic bubble, especially when you center your life around your passion, is so important & crucial to the process. That’s how the best work gets done and how timeless art is made. At least for my artistry, that’s the aspect I relate the most to. Also, I wasn’t familiar with Junot Diaz before this but everything he said was golden. I need to go do some research on his work! But seeing these great artists I look up to in so many ways have the same thoughts and mindsets as myself, an unknown artist, is very reassuring. Just have to stay on the path day by day.

As a training actor, and new writer, I’m currently in the long process of finding a daily routine where my best work comes through. I am beginning to understand, however, that I am a lot more distracted than I thought I was. Even just 10 minutes of shallow, useless, happy brain chemical spiking scrolling on my phone can kill my passion for the following hour. I need to feel genuinely good, at a soul level. I’m beginning to include activities on the daily that help with this, but with that, I’m also worried that it takes away from my time spent working on my creative endeavours. Your journaling prompt about that has fully opened my eyes to that thought that was kinda floating in my head. People like to talk about finding balance in life, but I’ve realised now that ‘balance’ as a creative is wayyyy different.
Thank you for this great video

  • @rudeesade

Where I really struggle is an all or nothing approach to my creative work. It completely consumes me when I get started, to the point where daily life outside of what I'm creating is an intrusion almost. Which means I take long periods away to deal with like...being a person. Which means my output is inconsistent. I'm trying to figure out how to balance this without losing the thrill that I love most. Starting in on a canvas or a blank sheet and waking up like, three days later with something gorgeous. No answers, all questions. So far.

thank you so much for this! As a visual artist I can relate to the feelings of isolation and strained relationships due to the time I need to dedicate to my work. It is a real need, which I'm learning to accept, instead of looking at it as being selfish. Time & freedom are so important for the creative practice. Finding your own way of doing things is also a complex process, sometimes the time you need to create something can be completely "inconvenient" and against the rushed world we live in. I'm learning that it is important to let myself be guided by the natural timing of my creative practice.

Thank you for your content. I recently found you through my recommended at a time in my life where I have stepped onto the other side of the unknown. I'm still gaining footing and my eyes are still adjusting to my more authentic expression. I think one of the main takeaways from this video is to begin! Without comparison. Without permission from anyone else but myself. I've been working towards my goals in unknown and known ways; I've positioned my days to where I can invest in my dreams - no longer working for the system that undervalues me and views me as replaceable. I'm taking risks and those who have known me for a while are questioning my decisions but I know that my soul knows where to go (an affirmation I've began saying for a couple of years now). I'm getting into a routine now and realizing that self-discipline is going to get me where I want to be. The days where I don't want to, where I'd rather not, have proven to be the days that make it count. Making sacrifices like quitting smoking to be more clear and focused, no longer suppressing my creativity and excitement for my passions. No longer giving a fuck who perceives me because I know my heart.... I went on a tangent but it's all relevant. I think the biggest proud moment is choosing myself and I will continue to do so no matter the circumstances. To anyone struggling and on the fence.. choose you! Your future self is waiting for you :)

From my experience of this video, it seems to be raising up the moments we spend creatively to a higher importance than the others we spend living traditionally. I find myself disagreeing with that idea. Being present and experiencing life is just as important to the creative work as actually doing the work. It’s in those moments that we form our own opinions, learn about ourselves, and figure out what we want to say. Personally, I will be creating work until I cant anymore, and there I’ve formed a real patience in my approach because of that.

OK this got me thinking. I think I agree with what you've said too. One of the things I want to balance a bit more about my videos is making sure I'm not superficially lifting the creative process as 'special' or something exclusive. That idea around being present in life is so important, and something that, as you say, is super necessary to actually feed the work anyway. Thanks for adding your piece here, and taking the time.

In my case , it takes alot of planning . I’ve recorded music for so many years that I can write exactly what I want but its the concept behind the music for me . The story or idea I want to tell then I can make the music . I’m currently working on a project and thats how its been. I want a great body of work that I can look back at and be still proud of it .

with me, i have so little free time outside of my 9-5 to pursue my creative projects, i will often remind myself every time i’m tempted to waste time doing something that won’t get me closer to my dreams. and i operate on a day by day basis, i try to do a little bit everyday so by the end of the week i feel better about other things that aren’t centred around me. it’s hard to balance but that’s the one way i’ve found that’s worked for me. excellent video by the way 👏

    @TARRAN_ Před 7 měsíci +3

I've taken a much more intuitive approach to my music and creative output in the last 6 months.
For about two years I became so deeply involved and attached to my fantasy world - especially my ego, which overran my personal priorities, life and relationships.
This period created some of my most expressive work ( which was actually my debut release and album ), I honestly didnt give a fuck about anyones opinion and also what I was saying - truly fearless.
But fast forward to now, im trying to find that balance again between all my worlds and becoming fearless again ( removing ego this time ). I've completely shifted my creative outlook and world, many hours of inner-work has been done and many more will be done.
Everyday, every second I still think about how my next project will sound, feel and look - also the new perspectives and identity ive grown into and how that will look... this will never leave.
I get extremely impatient sometimes, especially during this 'down-time' but I will choose to trust this process and I know im yet to create my most personal, expressive AND complete work.
Gotta always broaden our lens and remember the journey 🖤 give yourself grace and time to grow.

Wow so dope to read, glad this video resonated with your journey and thanks for sharing that. I hear you on the 'down time' being hard. It's always easier to stick in the groove and just look up and chase the next thing, so I feel that too. Thanks for sharing this again, and the goal of creating personal, expressive and complete work sounds like a massively valuable aim - I'm going to take that for my own self too.

@@creativemindsyoutube I'm so glad this also resonated with you too bro - there's absolutely ZERO time limit on creating truly valuable and personal work that connects to your identity and expression. We've gotta remember that 🖤
Thank you truly again for creating the content you do and being vulnerable with yourself and your audience - this video really created that space for me to even express how I've been feeling / the journey so far.
Excited for your journey and growth bro, thanks again.

The second question you posed was incredibly helpful to me. Over the past few months I've been pretty evenly split up my time with making music and playing melee online. While melee is undoubtedly a very therapeutic game for me and helps me reflect on myself, music does the same thing for me tenfold, and it's something that I'm going to make into my career someday. Thank you for the guidance! This is one of my fav new channels I've found

I comb the internet almost daily trying to find things to listen to while i work - to inspire me, to guide me, to share with others... I stumbled upon your page a few days ago, and recognize the thoughtfulness underneath your videos. As a creator myself (illustration) it's been two decades of feast and famine freelancing, and although I've read a lot and listened to many interviews from artist of all disciplines, the ones to whom you tilt a light do something that many of the videos seldom do, which is that it speaks to how long, and how tough, and how rewarding it can be to make work. But also, you remind us that we get old - all of us, and as artists and designers we need to factor this in too. I've been at this for 20 years -- i'll be 50 soon. Technology has changed the game and there are days when I struggle to keep up. Times are changing, and "time's a wasting" too, so I appreciate the reminders on how to stay the course. Again, thank you for the time and effort you put into your videos as well as all the thoughtful comments, and commenters on your page. This is much needed nowadays. Much love.

re: question 1. a life coach i worked with put it simply. choose 3 values (i.e. community, art, connection). now use those values as your compass to make your decisions in life. example: your invited to a party where some interesting people out of your industry are but you know you have to get up early for the gym. knowing that “connection”, one of your values, is present or can be created - you can rest assure that going to the party will bring you more longterm fulfillment than sticking to your gym schedule

I was struggling to finish a song with its music video I started 10 years ago, made a few burn out of it due to a lot of commitment into reaching the high level of standard I’ve set. I gave up twice and prioritized my regular job and sometimes fell into drug/escaping addiction. Then I remembered the initial spark of the song, the core intention behind, that was expressing gratitude to the people and country that welcomed my political refugee parent and allowed me to have a proper situation nowadays. I owed them that recognition into celebrating places and people from France in the music video. As I gave up , felt low or insecure, I just remember all the trust, time and energy these the people I’ve filmed that gave me, and it brings me back the energy and will to finish the project, not for me, but for them.

Right now my Approach with music is with the instrumentals obviously the instrumentals have the sound good to me to put vocals over them I know that sounds very vague but I'm just going to talk about the next thing but with the lyrics I realized the best thing I can do is just write about truthfully and what I'm thinking about and it doesn't always have to rhyme instead it's more just like me talking and then I'm just going to figure out how I'm going to put that on top of the instrumental with how I say it but also I realize I have a lot of ideas for artistic ideas for music but depending on what idea it is I might not go for it because it's not where my mentality is at at that time 100% because it'll be like there's another idea that I'm more likely to accomplish instead of that one and also I think it's because of my current situation with my life that it gets in the way of me feeling motivated to work on a specific idea because like I said it's depending on my mentality and what I'm dealing with with life and with people and what I'm thinking about

As an artist/singer-songwriter whose been singing and writing since a child and just falling in love with so many musical legends I.e. Lauryn Hill, India.Arie, Tracy chapman; I've only now consider myself to be an artist. I had this idea that the artist was something that I had to strive to become and that would be validated with the accolades and rewards but taking a step back, I now assert myself as an artist and one of value and this video helped me to realize that so I'm grateful for this. Thank you, truly.

I want to help others tap into their creativity my Main challenge right now is getting that isolation and complete silence and alone time that creatives need to create and bring to life their best work. My goal for 2024 is to move to a bigger house where I can have just that❤️😊
