I play pickup games often. All ages. Recently it so happened that the older guys were on a side and the young on a side. I thought we (old) would lose by a lot but we ended up winning by a lot. I think it was because we were too lazy to run a lot so we passed a lot and if the passing is going well it can really go in your favor. The young guys played forward too much and left their defense too thin.

But he's no George Best, he's not in Guinter Netzer's class, he's hardly Cruyff or Remsembrink - or Zico, or Maradona, or Michael Laudrup, Van Basten or Lionel Messi. not to take away from his footballing genius (cause he's having plenty of it), but... I would say lahm, ronaldinho, lampard and pirlo are a bit smarter than him. I'm talking purely about footballing IQ (understanding the game, instantly assessing dangers and scoring chances and countering / taking them, finding breaches in unbreachable defenses, and so on. Zidane, as great of a footballer as he is, often times has not known what to do with the ball when being put up against tough to break defenses like Juve's defense of the early to mid 2000s, whereas all others have never had difficulties in breaking up any defense. Ok, the exception might be philippe lahm because he's not been tasked with breaking up defenses very often due to his playing role on the pitch, but in all other circumstances he's been on par with the other 3. And there may have been other players that have been smarter than Zidane, I just can't come up with them at the moment. But if I'll do some research on the greatest footballers of the last 30 years I'm sure I'll find more. But dinho, lahm, pirlo, and frankie have always been "smarter", as you put it, than Zidane in my opinion)

Yes legends come and go. But I got this feeling that the legends of today will not be as missed and respected as the legends from the past. I think it has to do with my age. You look with different eyes when you are younger. It has more impact on you. By the years you get more experienced in live and thats makes you lose some enthusiasm about a game of football.
