  • The World Championship of Patina is one of the three contests held annually as part of the London Super Trunk Show, an extravaganza for aficionados and fanatics of leather dress shoes. This prestigious competition showcases the creative side of shoemaking called "patina," where skilled artists who specialize in creating unique shoe finishes using only leather dyes, creams, and waxes compete with one another to transform an undyed pair of shoes into extraordinary, one-of-a-kind works of art.
    Each of the three finalists are given just five hours for the task. They explore a range of techniques, from blending colors to layering shades, all while creatively pushing the boundaries of their craft.
    Following the completion of their work, a panel of judges carefully evaluates each pair of shoes, assessing both the visual beauty and technical execution of the finish, before, ultimately, selecting one winner to be crowned the World Champion of Patina.
    The World Championship of Patina brings together the finest patina artists from around the world, challenging them to showcase their skills and push their creative boundaries as they transform a pair of ordinary shoes into a truly remarkable masterpieces. It is an event that celebrates the art form, elevates the craft, and honors the ingenuity and passion of these talented artisans.
    This year's finalists in the 2023 World Championship of Patina were Alberto Suastez from the United States and Rod Baudry and Philippe Yang from France. In what was a tough and close competition, Philippe Yang took the gold, being declared 2023 World Champion in Patina.

    Production quality is off the chart. And kudos to you Kirby for not needing to be in every frame and letting the subject speak for itself. Very classy.

    Philippe did an incredible job at shaping the shoe with non-other than his patina craft. Congrats to him.

    My choice too, slightly unbalanced in the dark shade, but natural patina is hardly balanced anyway, and it's a time-limit contest. Next is Rodolphe's, followed by Alberto. Anyway, great video and very interesting contest.

    Green is my favorite color, I would love a patina like the first place winner but slightly darker.

    Thank you. Very interesting. I would have appreciated a few close-ups of the other contenders as well, if not short interviews with the other competitors. Still, thank you. 😊

      I've read that Alberto does do some patina work for The Shoe Snob's shoes, and other American makers I guess. Philip's company has an interesting product, unfinished shoes and one gets to choose the patina they want. Rodolphe's has a design-your-own. These guys are all good.

    What does your company logo, a pretty canon, have to do with you and your company?
    I would have imagined something like a loom or a button or needle..you know, relating to your industry. Its not like you sell ammo...
    Could you do a video talking to your logo - its meaning and it's contribution?
    Thanks Kirbs

      I’m not sure that I understand your comment. Especially in light of the fact that:
      1. Kirby’s first hire when he started his business was a black woman
      2. Kirby’s longtime tailor is an Indian-American gentleman and;
      3. Kirby is married to a Mexican woman
      Again, if you can elaborate on your comment to enhance my understanding, that would be very helpful.
