Great show. Isaac Trotter very impressed with your work today. Me and you are reading the same book and focused on the same chapters.
Last year was very predictable. And just as I knew how last year would unfold, I feel pretty confident about this year being another fun year. I’m excited for Jon. But he does have his work cut out for him.
My hope for Jon is he can be ACC coach of the year, and maybe even NCAA coach of the year given all the roster turnover. But to do that, you have to beat the best coaches of the best programs, not fall victim to them like last year. Now onto the roster.
Last year Jon had to get another bonafide big man to be a legitimate title contender. You can’t win without having at least 2 bigs on your roster.
However, if Jon wants to be a title contender this year he has to get an elite SG. Even if the collateral damage would be losing Caleb Foster.
The good news with the NCAA rule change (you have to put your name into the portal by May 1st) is that Jon likely wouldn’t lose Foster given that the pursuit to land any new elite guard will take time to unravel. So by the time guys get to re-evaluate their new role it will likely be after May 1st.
Why do I say Jon could lose Foster? Simply put, because I think Proctor has more potential/value, but Caleb will have all season to showcase his abilities.
In my opinion and as currently constructed, Jon is likely to play Foster at PG and move Proctor to SG. Which I think could really benefit Tyrese just as it did Roach. But if you land a guy like Johnell Davis, you move Proctor back to the PG, Davis to SG and Foster comes off the bench. It’s simply about best personnel and fit.
Look, Jon has shown no interest in players like Johnell Davis so I don’t expect Jon is going to hunt for an elite guard. Some people are going to argue he wouldn’t have let Roach go, but Roach was always physically limited (which we saw as the season finished) and despite being a great player (I love Roach), had Jon only started 2 guards McCain would have replaced Roach unless Jon wanted Roach to run the point.
So here we are! In the position we are night now…. Unless this guy becomes available in the portal. This year is going to be determined largely by one question.
Is Tyrese Proctor or Caleb Foster an NBA player??? We thought Proctor was that guy last year but he wasn’t. He cannot realistically expect an NBA coach or franchise to invest in him if he can’t dominate around the rim. Forget about just attacking the rim, you have to be a disrupter at the rim if you’re not an elite perimeter scorer.
My biggest concern for a guy like Tyrese Proctor is the same concern I’ve seen from him since he came to Duke. Deep down he’s scared. It was noticeable his freshman year and did any of you guys see his eyes/face before the NCST Elite 8 game??? He looked ABSOLUTELY TERRIFIED pre-tip off.
With that said, I have full faith Jon will untap his talent and that kid is oozing with it. But Tyrese doesn’t have to be scared. He should be challenging himself on his weaknesses DAILY. Putting in the extensive work will prepare you for most situations in life.
The only disagreement I have with Isaac is in regard to Koby Brea. Duke doesn’t necessarily need him. Will I complain if Jon lands him??? Of course not. But he’s Darren Harris 2.0. Same build, same style of play, just with more experience. You need a guy that will put pressure at the rim AND the 3PT line not just one of the 2.
This is also how you help get the most out of guys like Maluach who makes his entire living and pads the stat sheet on 2nd chance points. Attack the rim and he can help clean it up or give you a lob threat.
I also don’t necessarily agree Brea is an automatic starter. Brea only started 4 games at Dayton. What makes you think he comes to Duke and starts???? I get he dealt with injuries last year, but what you aren’t understanding are the implications of Brea starting.
First it means Duke is playing smaller which I personally do not think is the best lineup. 2nd it means that you are starting Brea at the 3 over Isaiah Evans.
Evans is a guy who has NBA range, can post you up at 3 if he wanted to. He does not care if your hand is in his face or if your body is pressed up against his. He will hit big time shots in big time moments. He is also probably Jon’s best player at attacking the rim. And he sboots 84% from the FT line.
What did you say yourself Isaac? Jon needs a guy that can attack the rim. What did I just tell you in my feedback???? Jon needs both from a guard. Pressure at the rim and the perimeter. Evans does both and is Duke’s best iso option from ANYWHERE.
And what’s funny is in my starting 5 Evans comes off the bench to replace Flagg or for Flagg to rotate up to the 4. (Ngongba, Malauch, Flagg, Proctor, Foster).
And if you conclude that I am correct, Brea shouldn’t start over Evans, then even in your own starting 5 which I’m guessing becomes updated to Malauch, Flagg, Evans, Foster/Proctor you would have to make the decision to bench either Foster or Proctor to start Brea.
Great stuff either way Isaac. Look forward to seeing you again. I’ll break down Duke’s best roster and why if it presents itself.

If only Filipowski and McCain could have stayed one more year to take up two of the three remaining open slots.....smh(what could have been). But when you're looking at being a first-round draft pick in the NBA, you can't pass that up. And I'm sure Coach Scheyer will pull another miracle and sign one or two more veterans like Gillis and Brown to round out the roster. I still can't believe he got those two! Just when it looked like Duke was going to have an AWESOME STARTING FIVE, and a short bench, like adding hot water to your oatmeal for breakfast, in comes instant offense.
