  • Russell's Reserve 10 Year got a slight label redesign, but is it all just on the surface? Hot on the heels of Russell's Reserve 10 year's win in our latest Flight Fight where we tested it blind against three other 10 year bourbons, it's time to see if the bottle that won (the old label) can compete against the a brand-new bottle (new label). The proof has remained the same at 90°.

agreed. more and more I'm letting my fresh bottles decant for a few months before i drink them. not in a decanter, but I break the seal on the cap, let some air in. alot of the sharpness disappears and even cheaper high proof sleepers step up a notch or two within a week+.

@@xxLIBERTYorDETHxxI’m relatively new to the bourbon game, but I totally agree. I have started doing that now too. My bottle of RR10 (new label) didn’t even taste good to me at all at first. A month later I went back and had a pour, and couldn’t believe how much different and better it tasted. That’s just one example, but I have noticed that over several different bottles.

We are big Russell’s fans here, so are always glad for reviews of all Turkey products. Thanks for your time on this one!

I used to drink and enjoy the old label Russell's Reserve quite often. When the newer label version came out, I didn't enjoy it as much and rarely buy it now. Good review!

Every batch of the same whiskey is going to be slightly different. It's impossible to perfectly replicate flavors from dozens of barrels. I've also noticed that if a bottle has been opened for over 6 months, it tends to drink sweeter and have a better mouthfeel. I think those are contributors. I don't think Russels 10 is getting worse. But this experiment points to other factors like the bottle being opened longer and batch specific iterations.

I feel partially responsible for this vid...very much enjoyed it! And agree with the outcome! Like I said previously, the new one is still an incredibly good bottle (neat or rocks) for the price.

There should be a date code lazered onto the glass near the bottom of each bottle

I feel like Turkey products have quite a bit of batch drift in general. I have had bottles of Russels 10 that were absolutely top tier and others that were just fine. Seen other channels do something similar with WT101. Great experiment regardless.

I am crediting David Jennings for this post. Jimmy and Eddie Russell dialed in the new still around April 2011, so anything with a bottle code of April 2021 (LL/JDxxxxxx) should be exclusively from the old still and anything with a code after April 2021 could contain distillate from the new still.

Label changed on Rare Breed also. Is it just a Campari/Wild Turkey thing, or is the juice in the bottle different along with the label? Would be interested on your opinion.

Can’t believe you’re doing a neck pour against the bottle that’s been open for a while. Drink that new bottle down a bit and let it sit for a couple months and then do this test again.

Why not drink both #LetsGetNutty #Nuttysquad russles 10 year is one of my favorites that not a lot of people know. I would add a little water to bring out something different from both.
Definitely an underrated bourbon a bit expensive but amazing i though the one on the right was a single barrel not a new label 🤔

When it’s opened up that much compared to the new label that had that had hardly any space, yeah duh. They didn’t really give the new label a fair shot.

I just last night, with great regret, dumped my first bottle of Russell's 10. The first glass was pretty good, but every glass thereafter I liked less, until I didn't like it a-tall. I like Wild Turkey 101, and the Russell's started out good, but apparently something in the Russell's profile just doesn't agree with my palate.

  • @ryanswihart1448
    @ryanswihart1448 Před 2 měsíci +1

Really feel like you guys gave the new bottle a really unfair shot. The older bottle has WAY more air time and the new bottle hardly at all. Are you guys just trying to push that older stuff is always better? Come on. This was NOT a fair stand off. I’ve had the new lable bottle for a few months the now at just a little more than half full (so way more space than yours) and it’s a FANTASTIC pour in every way. It opens up beautifully.
Feel like you guys fudged this one up.

They were blind so we didn’t know which one we were talking about and they were poured before we started filming and we let them sit in the glass even longer before doing our last sips. Not super scientific but the best experiment we could do with what we had.
