The lyrics Neil wrote to this song were inspired in part by Geddy Lee's mother's stories of surviving being imprisoned in a concentration camp during the Holocaust. Both of Geddy's parents were imprisoned in concentration camps, where they had met and fell in love. Miraculously, they both survived and eventually found one another again after the liberation. They married in 1946 at a displaced person camp and then moved to Canada to start a new life. Geddy Lee dedicates a whole chapter in his memoir, 'My Effin' Life', to his parents' survival story. Sadly, Geddy Lee's father died when Geddy was only 12 years old. His mother passed away a few years ago, just a few days before her 96th birthday.
"Red Sector A" is a song by Rush that provides a first-person account of a nameless protagonist living in an unspecified prison camp setting. "Red Sector A" first appeared on the band's 1984 album Grace Under Pressure. Lyricist Neil Peart has stated that the detailed imagery in the song intentionally evokes concentration camps of the Holocaust. Peart has stated that while Nazi concentration camps of World War II were his primary lyrical motivation, he decided to abstract the lyrics so as to apply to the experiences of atrocity of any similar prison camp scenario. It also has to do with singer/bassist Geddy Lee's remembrance of his mother's accounts of the Holocaust, which she survived.
This song was inspired by Geddy's mothers story of surviving the Holocaust. Geddy's parents met in a concentration camp. Alex Lifeson's parents are Serbian and his father spent time in a work camp during the war. Unfortunately Geddy's father passed when Geddy was 12. Powerful song. Landmark song, then, now, and forever. Regardless of how accurately you interpreted the lyrics, they grabbed you and made you think. That's what counts. Keep that Rush coming! ❤🇨🇦🔥🤯
Rush...always about civil rights, human rights, egalitarianism, social equality, dignity, humanity. The "Witch Hunt" is along the same lines...you should check that one out, and follow along with the lyrics when/if you do.

Specifically about the Holocaust and Jewish prisoners. Geddy's parents were Holocaust survivors and Neil wrote this in their honor.
