This sing never ceases to get me emotional. I was very close with my Zaida (may he rest in peace), a Holocaust survivor.
In case you weren't lyrically aware, this is a unique song, not just because of it's subject matter, but how it's lyrics were written.
Usually, it's only Neil Peart that writes the lyrics (may he rest in peace), but for this song, Geddy provided Neil with ideas and memories from his mother, also a Holocaust survivor.
Geddy is the only Jewish member of RUSH, and his real name is Gary Weinrib. He was nicknamed 'Geddy' because when he was a teenager, his friends/bandmates would come to his door and ask for Gary. His mother had a very thick Hungarian-Yiddish accent, and when Gary's friends asked for Gary, she'd turn around and call for him 'Geddy, your friends are here! Geddy?' So Gary's friends began calling him 'Geddy', and it stuck.
    Love your reviews, please continue!

This song never fails to bring a tear to my eye. It is unimaginable the things that previous generations endured at the hands of other human beings. The lyrics here are poignant, simple, but deeply meaningful. I can't help but feel a small sense of despair wondering if even when salvation is at the gates, there is something still to fear. One of their most powerful songs, in a multitude of powerful songs. Thanks for the reaction.

The seeds for the song were planted years ago in April 1945 when British and Canadian soldiers liberated the Nazi concentration camp Bergen-Belsen. Lee's mother, Manya (now Mary) Rubenstein, was among the survivors. (His father, Morris Weinrib, was liberated from the Dachau concentration camp a few weeks later.) The whole album "Grace Under Pressure," says Lee, who was born Gary Lee Weinrib, "is about being on the brink and having the courage and strength to survive."
Though "Red Sector A," like much of the album from which it comes, is set in a bleak, apocalyptic future, what Lee calls "the psychology" of the song comes directly from a story his mother told him about the day she was liberated.

I was originally so taken aback by the fact you were introducing her to the live version before the studio version.. b/c in most cases, the live version is soo different than the studio version of most songs. I was VERY impressed with RUSH's performance here b/c it was almost identical to the studio version.. but with enough differences to know for sure it was not just a dubbed live version. RUSH did a great job of replicating the original in a live setting. Speaks to their talent and their coordinated musical prowess. They are a very tight band.
    Peace

Absolutely stellar song from Rush to react to. I love all the comments talking about the lyrics, the story & how they're moved by them. I'm a long time Rush fan, but I've also always had major respect for them having the balls, the heart & the courage to create such a deep song about a subject so terrible & dark in human history.

    Hey KnR.
I've loved this song for decades. Rush is one of my all time favorite bands. I was never 'happy' with the video made for this song, and I think it could be done so much better today. If I were doing such a project, I would take scenes from the various Terminator movies and mix and match them to fit the lyrics.
I am so glad that Kel likes Rush. Someone that never grew up hearing all this, who appreciates what Rich and the rest of us all grew up loving.

This was my favorite song off the album, and this was the very first concert I paid for with my own money. Yes very heavy topic. The early 80’s were still Cold War and you never knew if you’d wake up to mushroom clouds everywhere. Yes very spooky, and then I find out Geddy Lee’s parents were holocaust survivors. This song really started to put things into perspective for a young teenage boy in those days. Awesome guys, glad you enjoyed it.

It is said that Neil wrote this after Geddy's mother told of her experiences in the Nazi concentration camps, where she spent most of her teen years, including her infamous Auschwitz(sp?) and where she met her future husband and Geddy's future father. They were separated when they were sent to different camps, and reunited after the camps were liberated. Then Geddy's aunt helped then immigrate to Toronto, as she was living in Ottawa.

One of their most underrated songs. Not that it’s not popular. Of course it is. But Tom Sawyer, Subdivisions, and others get all the “popular” love. This song is epic. The topic, and the fact that the lead singer’s mother was in a Nazi camp… just wow. Possibly Rush’s most impactful song. Wildly underrated.

My first Rush experience was With a live album named "a show of hands" which is losely based on this tour! Excellent album... mostly because they are among a few bands who are able to sound better live than in studio. Mainly since i think they can sound a little sterile? Here they just show well Connected they are and goes "of script".
Best moments? Subdivisions and Marathon :)

Their synthetic period is not my favorite, but their there were a lot of good songs during this time, and I especially love this song. I much prefer their RIO Concert footage, though - - probably because the fans really get them stoked.
I'm really enjoying watching Kel learn about Rush and watching Rich get reacquainted is fun, too!!

Great suggestions! And we appreciate the feedback on the quality of the mix because we have had a few problems with it but we haven’t heard any negative comments since we fixed it a few weeks ago. Please please please if you do hear one that is low or off balance in someway, please let us know in a private email to Richgafter@gmail.com.

I've seen several of your reaction videos now (all Rush so far), and I love watching Kel's reaction to their music. You keep saying that you like checking out new bands. I have a suggestion I think you will like. Check out the band Skillet. 3 songs I would recommend for starters are Legendary, Hero, or Feel Invincible. Enjoy!
