    I'm an industrial mechanic turned auto shop owner. That cocky in the relays is normal. There is a voltage spike when the contacts open and that is small amount compared to larger contactors. In a situation like that you need to get I to the control side of that relay and see if your coil (control) is energized and then take a voltage measurement across the contacts (output side) of relay.. When closeed (on) should be close to 0 volts and if your reading high voltage there is resistance in contacts.

    For relays you have to check the pitting on the contact pads, like you do on outdoor condensers.

    Relays wear out, s*it stains are not good, but relay contacts switching 120 VAC can be pitted up and still work fine the voltage is high enough to burn through any carbon. Now if the relays were switching low voltage it would be no bueno.

    Nice video, good learning experience. Wow. Pinhole leaks in the piping and fittings, failing mixing valve, old water damage corrosion on the connectors, bad expansion tank, burnt relays on the control board. this boiler has everything going wrong. If I lived there I would want that control board replaced before it fails in subfreezing weather on a weekend. Is it time to stop pouring money into that system and replace it, maybe with a lot of repiping? I wouldn't replace it without water analysis and recommended treatment added. Mike you are correct that the discolored relays are signs of wear. Who knows if they will last days or years like that.
    I had a Bryant 92% furnace. It's control board relay burnt up and the contacts unsoldered from the board because they got so hot. That POS furnace cost me a lot of money over its lifetime, two control boards, an inducer motor, a gas valve under warranty, and maybe a blower motor. I saved pennies on NG and spent dollars on repairs. Never again will I own a BDP product because that furnace was a PITA to do any routine PM at all. Not to mention that BDP wont sell parts to an owner.

    Those paper gaskets on the Honeywell mix valves always need another bit of torque a year or so after the install or they weep just enough to cause that.

    I concur where there's smoke there is fire
    It is showing signs of arching
    Also the draft motor sounds like she ain't feeling well.

  • @Chris_In_Texas
    @Chris_In_Texas Před 2 lety

    You found the magic smoke in the relay! I would assume the contacts are a bit carbonized as well. I am sure that relay has been on and off many many times. The internals of that boiler almost looks like a Navian! Those cables are in rough shape for sure. I am sure the resistance of those connectors are quite high, just like the relay. Its just a runaway cycle for sure, the worse it gets the higher the current, which then makes it worse and until something craps out (best case) or catches fire (worst case) until its fixed. Lots of holes in the copper and brass fittings, that need to be sorted out. My OCD was going insane in that room. You have to warn people with OCD that they need to look away and don't stare at the plumbing and electrical nightmare! 👍😁🤦‍♂

    When we installed those Honeywell mixing valves, we put isolation valves to change them. Because they always fail.

    • @daversj
      @daversj Před 2 lety

      With all that pitting on the domestic water side he might have a water quality issue. Bad water kills mixing valves quickly.

    I would still be suspicious of any relay exhibiting signs of arcing Enough carbon build up and or pitting of the contacts is a recipe for an off hours service call. Sounds like the manufacturer should beef up the current capacity of the relays imho

    Just my 2 cents you pay a lot more money for these high efficiency machines up front . Then they are more expensive to repair because parts cost more and the Techs. need more time with them . Are they worth it ? I guess only if the left stays in power and the cost of energy sky rocktes maybe . Then Mikey will be installing wood burning boilers . #FJB !
