I send you a drawing about a girl with a flower on her hair and u made it into a painting!!! u replied to my email saying " increase your wealth by investing in things that bring value , as an immigrant this country is kind to those who work hard". I was honestly homeless at the time and i was so happy u responded and actually saw my artwork🙂🙂

And it was a real pleasure listening to you guys. One of the things that really made me think was your comment on "nobody is really self-taught"... because I always tell other people that I am self-teaching myself, because I can´t afford going to art-school, when actually I´m learning so so much from guys like you, Andrew, Mark Carder with his amazing information that he provides on drawmixpaint, and many many others... Well, thank you for sharing your views and your knowledge and thanks for making me a bit more aware of my own role in this whole thing.

These two individuals are, in my humble opinion, masters in the fine art world today - although, slightly different styles. And, it is a sign of a true master when one is not afraid to express/share their feelings towards their fellow artists. I can't say who is better but what I can say is: their works are very inspiring! I am just learning from these two (and others) to help me define my own and unique style. THANK YOU.

Cesar has a remarkable world view. Tremendous drive and insight. His recognition of history, respect for craftsmanship and appreciation of the modern aesthetic is unique. Quite an amazing opportunity for someone like me to learn from someone of that caliber through videos and the modern conduits. Imagine being able to learn from the old masters in this way. What an age we live in

Hello Andrew. It is me again, I just wanted to tell you that after I watched this video a few times I realized that you and Cesar had taught me many new things. Not only about art and painting, but about life things too. I was listening to this video while I was painting and all my fears that I had ( like " I can't do this, it is too hard" ) disappeared and they also inspired me very much. Thank you again and I hope that you'll read this coment.

Over the years as a musician, either teaching or working on new things, I figured out that if we pay attention, we learn at least as much from ourselves as we do from anyone else. That's one reason teaching is good, it forces us to analyze our working methods, our technique, and "Oh, THAT'S why I do things that way...." some natural thing that any painter or musician does. In music, you have to slow it down to teach others. In doing this we either validate our methods, or correct mistakes we didn't even know we were committing. And in music, sometimes overthinking is the enemy. The whole thing is learning to let it flow, let it blast out of us, a more unfettered freedom because we've mastered these different aspects. Not that anyone ever really masters it all. Having said that, if you don't make mistakes in life or work, you aren't stretching enough.

Whoa. I ALSO was scrolling Instagram and came across the Peterson painting WHILE listening to 12 Rules for Life. It was surreal. How funny that you had the same experience, Andrew! I agree that Peterson’s core message is so valuable and I don’t care much about the politics- he’s not a political figure he’s a psych professor! And I went to school for psychology. Anyway, I applaud your bravery for getting into something controversial right out the gate- you might get some hate for it but to me it shows that you two are genuine and not just sycophants to your followers.

Thanks so much Andrew and Cesar! I'm a contemporary visual arts PhD Student in Australia and often find the focus on networking and other expectations from academic staff, like research article submissions to A+ journals, take up the time I'd spend creating and learning to hone my new profession via increasing my technical skills (not just discussing philosophies or the skills of other artists in relation to my own art practice). These expectations from supervisors are often in-part a requirement of the pursuit of a PhD, proving your worth to the institution as a contributing academic, and are more important than the art that comes out of it. As I think about it, I think that it is an inherent reflection of Western Society and perhaps even a symptom of middle-lower class challenges in getting an education. Especially for those in pursuit of a meaningful profession as part of living a valuable meaningful life. I often think of postponing the PhD and just working more. Such a complicated topic! Great discussion, it is great to get new perspectives. Can't wait to see more.

"Where did that idea come from?" Such a simple but amazing question to ask Andrew! When these ideas hit us, they are both puzzling and humbling at the same time. A truly creative Idea has this power to not just steer our actions in that moment, but the power to steer our lives! And where do they come from, huh?! Thank you for your dialogue about 'authentic' vs 'original' - all so true! :)

Here’s another coincidence for me personally, I’m a kiwi, born in Christchurch, I’ve followed both yourself and Cesar in particular of all the artists on line. When I saw your painting of the Milford Sound, obviously I recognised it straight away, and it was so stunning it made my jaw drop, as I’ve been to those places on the West Coast of the South Island and nothing I’ve seen in terms of photographs and paintings has ever approached what you managed to achieve in representing what it’s like to actually be there. I’ve been struggling with completing a portrait of my partner and Cesars work and words has been so inspirational, and I’m a psychologist and a big fan of Jordan Peterson too. What you guys achieve in art in cutting through the BS, that is so prevalent in art, I see parallels In what Jordan’s saying in terms of the damage some of the “wokeness” is doing to society as a whole and particularly in the University’s at the moment. Thank you

Thank you for the great podcast! Two of my favorite artists I follow. Even though you mentioned young artists I am a young artist in that I started painting in my 50's. I follow you and several other artists on UTube and the one thing in common is that you all paint beautiful paintings like the masters. Actually you are Masters. I am having my first solo show next month and am very nervous. Just a small local show but a big deal to me. I never painted or did anything artistic in my youth so it feels strange to call myself an artist as a former accountant!!

That is so true what Andrew said regarding this creativity we have, comes from the Creator! His signature is everywhere! As Job 38:4-5 the Word of the Lord tells us, "Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? Declare it if you have understanding?' The very breath in our bodies belongs to the LORD and He can take it back whenever He wants. He is beyond & bigger then the planets, and the sun and all else, and so small that IF you respond to His Voice comes to abided in your heart.
Love both of these very experience Artists and their honesty; God bless you both!
When Cesar made the comment on Peterson's comment, 'Fix your room," I remember this doctor friend, that when I walk into his immaculate office in his home, everything was in its place & super clean! I comment on his clean place and he took me to the back office where he really worked at. It was piled with so much paperwork and so messy!. He pointed to the open space that was immaculate and said, 'This is of a working mind!' And then pointed to his messy desk and said, " This is of a Genius!' We laughed about this!
I enjoyed all your videos. Heard a quote, 'different strokes for different folks' and 'beauty is in the eye of the beholder!' So as Artists they are all different and that is what makes you all sooo unique!~ Well, most Artists..

With near 6 decades brush in hand before canvas I contiinue to learn, so @ 36: min. in the conversation with Carlos I truly appreciated your comment about "those' artists who hold the high card of Master painter. In my experiences I've met & known several who intimidated & tossed me into doubts about my own ability...all the how to do & not to do's, what to paint, etc. This created such confusion, discouragement, worst of all suppression in my attempts to be original, authentically & my own compass. It is only now, having given up what others consider good, great & salable that I'm able to break those chains freeing my spirit to soar in work...as Cesar commented about being connected to. Once the top selling artist for corporate galleries, I'm now retired in Mexico, not selling but painting my own masterpieces I find a home in. I think it's giving up caring what others think that one embraces the courage to safely want; for me this means refinement, excellence & truth.
This whole conversation with Cesar, I found so valuable, especially for one younger in search of their promise before critics & so-called experts put braces on their imagination & brains. Thanks for this. I'm in total agreement with both of your insights.

  • @lizday8140

So many points Cesar made reflected my own experiences and thoughts.
One of the things you both hit on about us "not even knowing what we're up to, because that's art," resonated with me and followed the idea that I had once, when I was destitute and homeless, sleeping on the street, everyone who saw me wanted to know why I was there. "What are your goals?" "What are you going to do ?" "Do you have a plan?"
I didn't know! Things snowballed and I had no idea why I was there and what I would do to get out of it. When I though of the possible answers, I told myself, "If I don't know what I'm doing, neither do my enemies." And that...sounded right. It made sense to me. It was like what I read on a friend's Facebook wall..."God, why are you taking me through troubled waters? and He replied, "Because your enemies can't swim."
And, Cesar, I appreciated the points about doing the most expedient things for the moment, at that moment. If you are hungry, eat. If you need to pay rent, make the money. If you are sick, get help...so you can then continue to make the art that you love. To that, I say", I will try. I will do my best!"
It was a pleasure to listen to the podcast. Thank you for hosting such an interesting and uplifting discussion!

I heard the late great Terrence Mckenna talk recently, who originally trained as an art historian, and was reminded of it by your discussion of the two seemingly opposing movements within art, which could be described as 'originality' and 'traditionalism', and he described two fundamental behaviours of Nature as being novelty, and the conservation of that novelty. When Cesar spoke about how what is claimed to be originality is not really, but rather a very defined adherence to that which is already established, it strikes me that it unknowingly embodies both these traits, of both novelty, but also of conservation of that novelty, which then becomes traditionalism. This trend is very obvious in the political movements of today also, those that used to be anti-establishment are now very much pro establishment. It strikes me that these tendencies that we see across various domains point to something deep within the nature of Nature itself, a tension between both novelty and the conservation of that novelty, usually seen as conflicting rather than complementary.
The point made here about authenticity was a great one.
Thoughtful people, thoughful conversation, very interesting to hear.

    Guys,
Just watched the best interview ever. My two favourite CZcams artists talking together about their journey, their experiences and inspirations. I am a forty two year old Scottish truck driver who is studying an Art degree through distance learning in order to change career, I have always drawn as a hobby and have now decided to use this talent to make a living and I owe you guys so much because your channels have tutored me and made me develop as an artist as I identify so much with what you are saying. I naturally steer towards a representative or realistic approach to my painting and I am marked down for playing safe and not experimenting with a loose or abstract style, but I am being true to what drives me as a person in my art. Your insights into the exhibiting and working with galleries was truly helpful and I always admire your truth and transparency with sharing your knowledge - Cesar, I did buy your portrait painting DVD and it is easily the best investment in my art to date, where else could a learner gain so much wisdom from a master craftsman at such a low price? I will continue to follow both your channels and keep up the content, it truly is inspirational.

Loved your podcast and so glad you brought up the art school “mold” in how artists should be and think in order to be considered intellectual and worthy as an artist. It’s so true! I'm finding an incredible amount of inspiration in your work, your youtube videos... and now this, a massive convergence of philosophy, spiritualism, nuts&bolts advice, insights & highlights...All I can say is: Thank you! I only hope I have enough years left in me to let me try the things you've inspired within myself. Sincerely, again, thank you.

Thank you so much for this podcast. It came just at the right time for me. I am just about to take a serious leap and finally create my own art. Although I have been an animator for 30 years, I lacked the courage to strike out on my own. Seeing this podcast and seeing two very talented artists talk and be so real and down to earth gives me confidence that I will find my place. Thank you both for being real.

I feel as if I just came alive...woke up! I am not alone. In my small world, it is challenging to find and speak with those who are not afraid to go deeper in their thought life, artistic/creative life and not live on just the surface! Life is sooo rich! I enjoyed, tremendously, watching and listening to this conversation! Thank you so much to both of you!

What an exciting way to kickoff your new podcast! So glad you connected with Cesar Santos. Thoroughly enjoyed listening to two of my favorite artists discuss the ins and outs of being a creative professional. I'm learning so much from the content both of you put up on CZcams. Both you and Cesar seem so open and approachable. I think I told you before, Andrew, that I hope this is just the beginning of a long friendship and many collaborative opportunities for the two of you!
I, too, am looking forward to hearing future interviews with other artists in upcoming podcast episodes (hope Stan Proko is on your list, too). Your enthusiasm is apparent and it's inspiring! Thank you so much for sharing your life and your art with us!!!

Hi Andrew, thanks for a very inspiring show, I am a retired beginner and thinking of putting out my artwork on my youtube channel, I am autistic with aspergers and can sing dance draw and paint, and I design and knit all my own knitwear. So I am very creative, but I struggle with the business and commercial aspects of turning my hobbies into a business. Your podcasts with your guests has encouraged me to go ahead and create content and just do it rather than waiting till I can draw or paint much better. thanks Lady Rosie.

Hi. I am very grateful to see you both talking about your passion, sharing experience and ideas and a very great advice to apply for future artists. I'm from Philippines, and these two great men are always been my virtual mentor and not to mention that its free tho. And I'm so happy and was amazed of this chance to see you in this episode. The world needs art. Art is love, a medicine every soul; and energy that we must not resist to accept. Art is living; art is you. It's us.
Lots of love to the two of my favorite artists on youtube. 😘😘
