You might have heard stories about the old Great Wall utes, but this one is a very different proposition - it's the all-new 2021 GWM Ute, which is also known as the Pao, Poer and P Series, depending on the market. And you might also know it by the Great Wall Cannon name, and that's not because of that cannonball-sized grille emblem.
No matter what you call this new dual-cab pick-up truck, you need to know this: it is unlike any Great Wall ute that has come before it, and it's now, you guessed it, actually pretty great considering the price of this 4WD ute range.
On price it's up against the likes of the LDV T60, but it certainly has the technology and refinement to compete with the likes of the Toyota HiLux, Mitsubishi Triton and Ford Ranger.

Have been looking for a ute for a while and have driven all the major brands. Need 1000kg+ payload so that FBT doesn't come into play so that scrubs most of the mid to higher spec utes except for Mazda/Isuzu and Ssangyong XLV. Triton GLS 920kg and Ranger 3.2 XLT Auto 940kg are out of the mix as are the higher spec models. So I drove Cannon-L and Cannon-X. The Cannon doesnt have quite as much 'go' as Triton and Ranger but runs an 8 Speed BorgWarner transmission that works just fine. With 1050kg payload, constant 4wd, rear diff lock and tech that's way above anything else in the market the big question is 'risk' on the new model. Well it comes with 7year warranty and 5yr roadside assist so I've bitten the bullet and ordered an 'X'. Simply can't argue with the value proposition and ROI for a working vehicle that should play well too. Everyone say's "but what about the resale?". Well when a comparable (almost) spec Ranger costs mid-high $60s, the $20K saved and invested more than offsets the resale difference and contributes a big chunk to a trade to the the update model in a few years time. I see the GWM Cannon being to GWM what the iLoad has been to Hyundai, and I think it'll set the cat amongst the pigeons.

Just drove the Cannon L on the weekend. It drives very well. Gearbox is spot on. Plenty of pick up. Very quiet inside. There is turbo lag and in reverse i noticed quite a bit of surging when I was trying to park. I couldn’t get the throttle placement right to smoothly reverse park. Mind you, I’m coming from a 09 Hilux SR5 I’ve had for 5 years. Jumped back in it after the Cannon and it was like returning to the dark ages. Loud, tractor like and rough. I am concerned about GWM build quality but with a 7yr warranty should I be? I also had 5yr fixed price servicing confirmed by the dealer in Brisbane. Going to take it for another albeit longer drive

I’m still very happy with my Cannon Ute..... I haven’t done a lot of kilometres in it so far, but it’s purring along just beautifully.
The DPF burn is something you have to get used to and be aware of.
I’ve had to only do one manual DPF burn but if you follow instructions it’s not that daunting & it is all over in approx 20 min...
It’s also done 2 automatic DPF burns as well .... but I was driving at the time and there is no change to the vehicle.
I have added some accessories that I got direct from China that works out so much cheaper...
1 - I-9 throttle controller for $55 delivered I didn’t want to spend $200 on one locally if it didn’t help & yes it definitely improves the throttle response immensely.
I had to wind it back as I was getting too much wheelspin .
There still is some marginal turbo lag with it but you have to live with that.
    2 - Mud-flaps x 4 $48 delivered.....big saving
3 - Aluminium roller Tonneau cover/manual.... just finished installing it & it has came up a treat works perfectly..
When you lock it with the key it also locks the rear tailgate (bonus) cost all up $830 delivered to my door under half price of some locally.
Installation is very straight forward you just need a second person for the lifting into the back of the Ute part... wait time by Sea-freight was only 5 five weeks.....very impressed with it.
4 - Full darkest legal window tint all round (medium grade) it only cost $350.
Next I plan to add to my vehicle (white) is some black aftermarket signage/striping decals to break it up a bit.... they are also very in expensive from overseas.

Agree with the turbo lag comments but in the GWM Facebook group they say putting it in sport mode gets rid of the lag. After driving the Cannon I got into a new Triton and it felt like stepping back in time 15 years and was soooooo much smaller inside. I think it also beats the LDV T60 by miles. Would I buy one? I'd wait a year or so and follow the FB groups to see what issues arise. I did that with the T60 and I'm glad I did because they have rust and over heating issues etc.

The bits that you noticed you'd very quickly happily live with. The Chinese are pretty clever rather than pay for development GWM went shopping. The common rail fuel system is from Delphi. IHI turbo. ZF transmission and the drive line & diff lock are from Borg Warner. Hard to knock any of that. Of course a few die hard bogans will laugh no matter what. China is coming of age, remember Hyundai & Kia's were absolute shite when they first hit the market now they're leading the way in a lot of respects. Pros and cons, yes the other utes have their attractions but not everyone can afford a Ranger.

I notice a lot of Toyota bakkie owners is moving over to this GWM bakkie because of the price, tech and flexibility it gives. Also the safety factor and ease of mind with warranty and service that is unlimited miles......this is a winner for me.
