2021 GWM Cannon/Poer review: Tailgate step + longer than a Ranger & HiLux! Great Wall

  • The Great Wall Motors Cannon/Poer is longer than a Ford Ranger and a Toyota HiLux. It's huge! Plus, it has a folding step built into the tailgate. When it came to utes, made-in-China was never really a good thing, but the 2021 Great Wall Motors Cannon (also known as the Poer) aims to change that. But, as you all know, I don't listen to marketing spin. So join Paul Maric in a detailed review of the 2021 GWM Cannon-L. Includes some light off-roading.

Had my base model a few weeks now......got the tub sprayed by a third party after getting the free 1k accessories pack in the deal.
The quality of the tub spray from Rhino Linings is a far superior product it’s approx 3-5mm thick over the whole tub compared to the 1mm tub spray you get as standard in the L or X....from the factory.
Super impressed in it & the whole vehicle...

I have Purchased the CannonX from GWM and love it, alot of the things you mentioned lacking was because your Review is the Cannon L version, the Cannon X comes with Reach for the Steering wheel and 60/40 Split Rear seat way better dash and Better Interior and a wireless phone charger. I Suggest to anyone to get the CannonX spec..its worth the extra to spend..

I have a cannon guys. Now I’m finding everyone reviewing utes ate confusing turbo lag with pedal delay... once you fit a pedal chip that sharpens up the response on the pedal there is no delay. It’s built in delay from factory to stop wheel spin in wet weather. People think 400nm torque is nothing but it’s a lot and the power is very accessible in the rev range.

Nope it won’t. If you purchase through Ultimate9 in Melbourne they will cover any damages if it was to ever occur. However the pedal module doesn’t change anything that the car can’t safely do. It basically allows you to access the available power from the engine just quicker taking out the programmed delay in the accelerator. It’s brilliant. Just some food for thought. LDV allow them as a dealer accessory and other brands like mitsu Nissan Isuzu Toyota etc. it’s harmless but has gains

Hilux and Ranger now with a top spec going past the 70k mark it’s just insane for a dual cab Ute with a small bed and a plastic interior and sub standard tech , they are luxury car prices for a Ute that you cannot get the same load length of the standard Ute,s of the 80”s and a back seat no bigger than a small car !

Paul, Great review as always and informative.
Even though it is considerably cheaper, the jury is still out on dependability and reliability.
The only ute I will put my money on today is the Triton. Best value for money, proven dependability and reliability and if and when it breaks it is the easiest and cheaper ute to repair by a mile.

Hi m8 great channel I bought a 2014 v200 dual cab 4*4 and apart from a couple of silly things like the plastic radiator hose and a abs sensor cable a set of shocks it’s been fine, yes it’s under powered if you need to tow a horse flout or huge caravan but it’s geared tall, so if you get the revs up before you take off it’s actually good ( drive it on boost ) same said for most small turbo diesels, but I have m8s with bt50 s rangers blah blah and they’ve done gearboxes, diffs, some an engine, I’ve had none of that, I do my oil change at 10,000 not 15,000 as recommended but overall for what I need it’s been awesome . Yes some of the stuff is cheap but you bought a cheap ute what do people want you can’t have champagne on a beer budget, there’s unfortunately no Aussie brands to buy so unless you have to keep up with the Jones’s or you can offered twice the price for a bit more power they’re good value. Yes I would love to have a hilux, ranger , amarok but fuk paying 70 to 80 grand , mines been fine for me and ill drive it till it stops 👍

I remember back in the day when people use to criticise Japanese made vehicles such as Toyota’s, Mitsubishi which is a multi national company, Isuzu and the list goes on. Iv owned and driven fords, Rovers, Toyota’s , Austin’s, BMWs all second hand cars. I had a 2020 steed manual for couple months, then traded up to 2021 GMW cannon which I get a lot of pleasure driving. In three weeks iv clocked up 2569 ks with ease and comfort. Plenty of room with good all round viewing. It has the get up and go when the going-gets-tough and meets the challenges Iv put it through. Im not green behind the ears when it comes to knowing a good vehicle. My first driving lessons were a 1955 ford truck my dad owned back in the day and driven many other classics. Now I have a brand spanking new Ute which I gets lotsa pleasure in driving. I feel safe traveling with the grand children on board.

As long as you dont lose that in depreciation when you sell it. Hopefully the warranty helps with this issue but the current owners are very much guinea pigs in many ways. Early adopters in a car with an unknown crash test rating and reliablity that if not very good could tank the price. Current hiluxes and troopies are appreciating in price at the moment.
All said not a bad ute though. Nice to drive and lots of good features and nice interior. Just a real shame about that gutless engine and relatively poor economy considering its low power. It should have come with 150kw and 500 NM or more at least to future proof it against the new generation of rangers that will be here soon.

0-100 on the speedometer in 11.4 isn't bad at all! The predecessor (that I own and love, and is not the Steed 5, but the Steed 6) is way slower, the main problem being the extremely long gearing. I've always said, that vehicle with the BMW M57 would be a match made in heaven. This one would also likely be a dream come true with that 6IL 160 kW.
Oh, and I always hear the ride is "busy" on the rough, but my Steed 6 is honestly exceptionally comfy on the heavy corrugations. I don't know what the comparison is. It's not going to be like a premium SUV, but I have no bumpy issues.

In china, gwm can sell around 2 MILLION cars each year, they have strong dealership network all around china, and very cheap maintenance cost, like minor service cost around aud50-60 and swap engine cost around aud800-1000 including labor. Here in australia yearly sale only around 2000, gwm cannot do anything more. However, if just look at this car, I can tell you it has really really good reputation in china, same as previous steed. In contrast, MG and LDV are really shit brand in china, although they belongs to saic.

      city/country/off road & towing (van)...great machine yes.
But this new kid on the block ticks plenty of boxes ....& feels very Ranger like.

It has a great ZF 8 speed auto that’s well matched to the 120kw 400nm engine.
Constant 4wd - disc brakes all round - deep tub - rear seat legroom huge - none of which my Ranger had by the way.
