- Detailed review and test of the 2024 GWM Cannon Alpha Hybrid (Shanhai Cannon) including engine, handling, ride, price and mode.
The new hybrid-powered GWM Cannon Alpha is attractively priced, large and powerful - on paper. But on the road, its hybrid engine and ride quality grow tiresome as they lack polish. The interior, however, is lovely and the value for money is there.
GWM needs to refine the power delivery and ride quality of this vehicle for it to be competitive with the best utes in the segment. It has the chance to get it right with an update.
Rivals to the GWM Cannon Alpha include the Ford Ranger and Toyota Hilux, although the Alpha is indeed larger than those vehicles.

GWM needs to refine the power delivery and ride quality of the Cannon Alpha for it to be competitive with the best utes in the segment. That is achievable - it has the chance to get it right with an update.
I’m sure it will, they have been good at listening for the Cannon and have made tweaks to refine it.
Blame the bureaucrats at ANCAP for the annoying safety systems. The manufacturers are just responding to their whims to achieve a 5 star rating.
just crash and blame the system.
Chinese business doesn’t sleep. If there is something that needs to be fixed to keep them competitive, they will be working on it as we speak. They can make big changes on months, not years like some other companies.
Fine by us, we’re simply providing the feedback we think GWM needs to get this product right
I’ve got an amarok 580 and would trade that in for one of these, turn off the safety features and spend )2k-$3k for high end suspension upgrade fit some off road tyres and wheels and it’s still under price of the rest
I think the Alpha does a good job of highlighting the inherent relative value of the L/X/Vanta.
Good review. Thank you.
One thing I find funny about all reviewers is that if you wind the clock back a few years they were wanting everything on a screen and when vehicles had buttons they called it outdated and now all these reviewers want buttons back now 🤣🤣🤣
No, we always wanted hard buttons.
Why do reviewers bang on about the features demanded by ANCAP? Why do they ignore the fact that most of those features can be turn down or off?
Plus they bang on about the ride forgetting that its a ute designed to carry a load. So what is it? Comfort or load?
Because the smoothness, tuning, controls for, and implementation of the features are largely up to the manufacturer - not ANCAP. We understand cars have to have various systems, but when they’re tuned well they don’t cause frustration. Some manufacturers are far more capable than others at this. Further, as to load, we expect a balance - utes are sometimes unladen and sometimes laden.
@@chasingcars remember ride is very subjective. It will depend on the purchases intended use. It would be far easier to simply point out that unladen the ride is harsher than would like it to be. Same with features. A blanket statement will always trip you up.
Nice review with all of those features at that price with all that power will def be going out to test drive one.
I was inpressed also with the 7 year warranty with unlimited ks.
I own a cannon X. Forget about a software update. It never happened for the cannon. The turbo lag / transmission lag from a standstill was never fixed. The lane keep was never calibrated and the CarPlay still
locks up. I think if the sales figures are low on this Ute it is because GWM got what was coming to them due to not delivering what was owed to early adopters.
Chinese cars are products of over production capacity. After sales service and refinements are not in their calculations. I wouldn't choose one only for more fancy sofa and larger display screens, which are actually very cheap for a factory in China.
I’ve had all my software updates for the cannon ent haven’t you ? Turbo lag is as lasts issue with turbo engines , I hardly notice any but you can run in sports mode or use a throttle controller
Never had issue with lka never turned it off in 18 mths
U use wireless dongle for CarPlay and never have an issue
Great review as always! Thou, I have to point out that similiar to all the other reviews, this top-spec Alpha hybrid is priced AT, not FROM, $64,990. 'From' implies further costs to be added.
It literally says on GWM’s website “Cannon Alpha Ultra Hybrid, From $64,990 driveaway”
Maybe take it up with GWM directly if you have a problem with it.
It’s from ,as the metallic paint costs more
There is only extra for paint other than smite , it is driveway price
Is this full time 4WD or part time? Can you drive 4WD on sealed roads? Getting mixed I go from different reviews
You mention front seats are electric and heated. They are also cooling as per the rears.
They are also massaging
More Zak content please 👏🏼
Interesting, to say the least, for what I have learned here clearly tells me to steer away from the 6-cylinder Hybrid relative to the 2.4 l turbo diesel. There is one more thing: It's NOT a plug-in
Doesn't it have voice control where u don't need buttons for a lot of the features?
I'm yet to see any manufacturer get the driver assist/safety systems working perfectly, that is not just a GWM problem. But unfortunately, they are needed for a 5 star rating.
In terms of suspension, they went leafs in the back because it's a ute... A suspension upgrade can fix it relatively easy and it'll still be cheaper than most other utes.
I drove a Tank 500 and didn't see any issues with power (or lack of), in fact, I thought quite the opposite... I'd be interested to see how this compares when I get to drive it.
On Red Nose Day, just paint the badge.
Cassonova bowens NVES will still tax the shit out of it even though it’s a hybrid.
This pick up would have been better if they made it more utilitarian to suit the needs of a contractor or plumber. They can use the extra interior space for tools and storage while still having a decent tray length. Too bad these companies are catering to soccer moms and mall crawlers who will most likely never put anything in the tray.
They have the V6 in China. Dunno why it isn't coming to Aus..

Main reason why I will not give my hard earned money to GWM
You didn’t mention the same original hybrid system is in the tank 300 HEV 😊 also…
He did say it's same engine as the tank 500 though witch is more relatable to the ute.
@@clintonmorris1945 ok if you say so. I own a HEV ultra 300 and the first original engine specs are all the same 255kw and 648nm and 9 gear gearbox carried to the rest of the HEV range, read all the specs and service schedules and prices are identical. Its cosmetics shapes dimensions in others tank 500 slightly longer. Ute much more. drivetrains identical etc. 12.5 driver console looks the same except 14 inch in others. Software menus look the same with some differences . Tank 300 is 2.3 tonnes the 500 and ute around 2.6 tonnes. i get 9 to 12L litres per 100 klms the latter city cycle. add another 2 more litres to the rest they are all very heavy vehicles and HEV system for all these is for pulling Power in sports and 4L modes etc.😊
@@miliobaltas how do you like the drive of the hybrid? Have you had any issues at all?
@@clintonmorris1945 gr8 no issues
Regards to the rear seat leg room you must be a big guy cause I’m 5 10 and have lots of knee room in the back with my drivers seat in position
I thought that too I’m 6’3” and I’ve got tonnes of knee room , looks like they pushed the drivers seat way back
For 64k i think i would rather spend less money & get the 2.4 T urbo diesel , which is probably a better option.
Had a few great wall utes not something I would buy, parts are always a problem as is usually the build quality and resale, Toyota a better buy and resale will always make the difference in price Cheers
First couple of river crossings should sort the hybrid crap out.
Even the chinese brands are pushing 60k+ for a ute now, crazy, also 9(claimed) litres per 100ks is horrible for a hybrid, especially considering the 6-7l per 100 in most of the competitions hybrids
GWM claims that this powertrain is designed for better perforamce instead of fuel efficiency
Needs a bigger badge.
Canon alpha interior but BYD shark everything else.
Tray? thats a tub mate.
180KW/380nm 2L .. on only 91 octane? ... hmmm.. Yeah lets see how that actually goes on our fuel. It'll either knock its outputs back with timing and rich mixture (explaining the shit fuel consumption) under load, or it'll die an early death.
255kw/648nm 2L 91 octane. idk what you're on about..
Pointless offering a hybrid that returns 12L per 100km
GWM have stated the hybrid is for extra power not economy
It's for extra power, was never Intended for economy
hybrid =/= effeciency. GWM have stated a thousand times it's for power and performance.
Pretty poor fuel figures, My 5Cyl Ranger full of tools gets under 10.0l / 100
It's a pick up
A decent review, but that aside since when did we become so focused on all the gizmos & gadgets on the inside! please less focus on the techono stuff & some more focus on what the vehicle is actually designed for it is a ute after all. who really cares about a 14 inch screen if the stupid thing has a crappy transmission calibration. we are getting far to bogged down with stuff that is not that important. for this and any other new car entering into the market. Basics 101 it needs to be a dam good car first! Forget the glossy stuff, it needs to drive, handle well enough & be able to take a decent payload.
Since many buyers decided they like the toys as well, which is what informs manufacturer focus groups, which is what decides standard spec… but none of that is a substitute for driving dynamics, which is why this channel always goes hard on ride, handling, performance, etc. this review is no different.
@@chasingcars You are better than most other channels. However my personal opinion is that the basic premise must be emphasised over what sort of tech you get. If the basics are not up to scratch then who cares if it has leather seats & wizz bang screens. The toys are distraction people should focus on the actual vehicle not the gizmos.
Because if it's gonna cost a lot it should come with a lot. Which is why the LC79 is a POS it should cost 20K brand new at most. Pricetags set expectations. The hilux comes in a stock standard 2x4 with no gizmos and that still costs the same a base model cannon..
Millennials and Gen Zers are the main reason for the extra tech added to the vehicles for eg a family friend wanted to buy her own car and she's 24 years old , guess what are the top features she wanted ???
1. Biggest screen
2. Biggest sound system
3. Cruise control
4. Pano sunroof
5. Brightest lights
6. Different options for interior colours 😂😂😂.
